Persistent cornual pregnancy mimicking uterine arteriovenous malformation: a case report

BACKGROUND

Uterine arteriovenous malformation(AVM) refers to the abnormal direct traffic between uterine arteries and veins, which can be characterized by the imaging examination, showing increased uterine vascularity and arteriovenous shunting. However, similar imaging manifestations can also be seen in a variety of conditions including retained production of conception, gestational trophoblastic disease, placental polyp, and vascular neoplasm.

CASE PRESENTATION

Here we present a case of a 42-year-old woman who was suspected of suffering uterine AVM indicated by Doppler sonography and magnetic resonance imaging but was finally diagnosed with a persistent ectopic pregnancy located on the right uterine corner by pathology after laparoscopy. She recovered well after surgery.

CONCLUSION

Uterine AVM is a rare and serious condition. In general, it presents special radiological manifestations. However, when complicated with other diseases it can also be distorting. Standardized diagnosis and management are important.

Mapping and Functional Analysis of QTL for Kernel Number per Row in Tropical and Temperate-Tropical Introgression Lines of Maize (Zea mays L.)

Kernel number per row (KNR) is an essential component of maize (Zea mays L.) grain yield (GY), and understanding its genetic mechanism is crucial to improve GY. In this study, two F₇ recombinant inbred line (RIL) populations were created using a temperate-tropical introgression line TML418 and a tropical inbred line CML312 as female parents and a backbone maize inbred line Ye107 as the common male parent. Bi-parental quantitative trait locus (QTL) mapping and genome-wide association analysis (GWAS) were then performed on 399 lines of the two maize RIL populations for KNR in two different environments using 4118 validated single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) markers. This study aimed to: (1) detect molecular markers and/or the genomic regions associated with KNR; (2) identify the candidate genes controlling KNR; and (3) analyze whether the candidate genes are useful in improving GY. The authors reported a total of 7 QTLs tightly linked to KNR through bi-parental QTL mapping and identified 21 SNPs significantly associated with KNR through GWAS. Among these, a highly confident locus qKNR7-1 was detected at two locations, Dehong and Baoshan, with both mapping approaches. At this locus, three novel candidate genes (Zm00001d022202, Zm00001d022168, Zm00001d022169) were identified to be associated with KNR. These candidate genes were primarily involved in the processes related to compound metabolism, biosynthesis, protein modification, degradation, and denaturation, all of which were related to the inflorescence development affecting KNR. These three candidate genes were not reported previously and are considered new candidate genes for KNR. The progeny of the hybrid Ye107 × TML418 exhibited strong heterosis for KNR, which the authors believe might be related to qKNR7-1. This study provides a theoretical foundation for future research on the genetic mechanism underlying KNR in maize and the use of heterotic patterns to develop high-yielding hybrids.

Defect Filling Method of Sensor Encapsulation Based on Micro-Nano Composite Structure with Parylene Coating

The demand for waterproofing of polymer (parylene) coating encapsulation has increased in a wide variety of applications, especially in the waterproof protection of electronic devices. However, parylene coatings often produce pinholes and cracks, which will reduce the waterproof effect as a protective barrier. This characteristic has a more significant influence on sensors and actuators with movable parts. Thus, a defect filling method of micro-nano composite structure is proposed to improve the waterproof ability of parylene coatings. The defect filling method is composed of a nano layer of Al2O3 molecules and a micro layer of parylene polymer. Based on the diffusion mechanism of water molecules in the polymer membrane, defects on the surface of polymer encapsulation will be filled and decomposed into smaller areas by Al2O3 nanoparticles to delay or hinder the penetration of water molecules. Accordingly, the dense Al2O3 nanoparticles are utilized to fill and repair the surface of the organic polymer by low-rate atomic layer deposition. This paper takes the pressure sensor as an example to carry out the corresponding research. Experimental results show that the proposed method is very effective and the encapsulated sensors work properly in a saline solution after a period of time equivalent to 153.9 days in body temperature, maintaining their accuracy and precision of 2 mmHg. Moreover, the sensors could improve accuracy by about 43% after the proposed encapsulation. Therefore, the water molecule anti-permeability encapsulation would have broad application prospects in micro/nano-device protection.

Employee-Organization Pro-environmental Values Fit and Pro-environmental Behavior: The Role of Supervisors' Personal Values

This study examines the relationship among the employees-organization pro-environmental values fit (E-O PEVs fit), supervisors' PEVs and employees' pro-environmental behaviors (PEB). Informed by the PEB, organizational values and employee-organization fit literature, we propose and test hypotheses that under egoistic, altruistic and biosphere-value orientations, E-O PEVs fit versus non-fit have significant effects on employees' private-sphere PEB and public-sphere PEB, identifying supervisors' PEVs as a moderator. An empirical investigation indicates that the effect of E-O PEVs fit on employees' private-sphere PEB and public-sphere PEB varies as the value orientation differs. More specifically, under the context of altruistic and biosphere-value orientations, if the organizational PEVs do not match the employees' PEVs, especially when the former exceeds the latter, employees' PEB will rise as the organizational PEVs increase. As for egoistic value orientation, when organizational PEVs exceed employees' PEVs, not only will public-sphere PEB stop decreasing and tend to stabilize, but also private-sphere PEB will rise to a slight degree. Furthermore, compared with altruistic and biospheric values dimensions, supervisors who promote egoistic PEVs will have a more significant effect on the relationship between global E-O PEVs fit and employees' PEB. Finally, we suggest that the goals of an organization and its supervisors need to be combined within the actual situation of Chinese corporations to truly implement corporate green practices by balancing the profit goal and the environmental goal.
