Seasonal variation in health impacts associated with visibility in Beijing, China

Visibility has been continuously and stably observed for more than half a century, while particulate matter with an aerodynamic diameter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM_2.5) was not introduced to the national monitoring system in China until 2013. It is a scientific issue as to whether visibility can be used as an alternative to assess the health risks of air pollution in periods and areas without pollutant monitoring data. A generalized additive model (GAM) was adopted to estimate the impacts of seasonal changes in visibility on mortality in Beijing, China. Moreover, we estimated the contributions of particulate matter in the health effects of visibility by adjusting for dry extinction coefficient (β_dryext) and PM_2.5 in the model, respectively. We found that the acute health impacts of visibility varied by season, with the highest risks in winter. For respiratory mortality, the effect estimates per 1 km decrease in visibility were 0.40% (95% CI: 0.17-0.62%) in spring, 0.10% (95% CI: -0.14-0.34%) in summer, 0.27% (95% CI: 0.09-0.45%) in autumn, and 0.62% (95% CI: 0.38-0.85%) in winter. For cardiovascular mortality, the effect estimates per 1 km decrease in visibility were 0.20% (95% CI: 0.08-0.31%) in spring, 0.16% (95% CI: 0.04-0.27%) in summer, 0.25% (95% CI: 0.13-0.37%) in autumn, and 0.24% (95% CI: 0.13-0.35%) in winter. The seasonal pattern of health impacts related to visibility reflected the seasonal variations in the characteristics of air pollution emission sources and meteorological conditions that are unfavorable for pollutant dispersion. Particulate matter, particularly PM_2.5, made significant contributions to the health impacts of visibility. The results indicated that controlling pollutant emissions in winter would be of significant importance to improve air quality and mitigate the health hazard of air pollution in Beijing. Our study also provides further evidence on the feasibility of using visibility to assess the health impacts of particulate matter pollution.

Open path incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced measurements of NO3 radical and aerosol extinction in the North China Plain

We describe the observation of the NO₃ radical using an incoherent broadband cavity-enhanced absorption spectrometer in an open-path configuration (OP-IBBCEAS) in a polluted summer environment in continental China. The instrument was installed 17 m above the ground at the top of a residential complex near the CAREBeijing-NCP 2014 site in Wangdu, Hebei province, about 200 km southwest of Beijing over the period 28 to 30 June 2014. The separation between the transmitter and receiver components of the instrument was 335 cm and the effective pathlength in clean reference air was ~3.4 km. NO₃ was detected above the detection limit on all three nights when the instrument was operational. The maximum mixing ratio measured was ~175 pptv with a detection sensitivity of ~36 pptv for measurements with an average acquisition time of 10 min. While most extractive instruments try to avoid interferences arising from aerosol extinction, the open path configuration has advantages owing to its ability to detect trace gases even in the presence of aerosol loading. Moreover, concurrent retrieval of aerosol optical extinction is possible from analysis of the absorption magnitude of the oxygen B-band at 687 nm. The experimental setup, its calibration, data acquisition, and analysis procedure are discussed, and the results presented here demonstrate the sensitivity and specificity that can be achieved at high spatial and temporal resolution using the novel configuration of IBBCEAS in the open path.

The influence of terrestrial transport on visibility and aerosol properties over the coastal East China Sea

Air pollutants from East Asia continent can affect the physio-chemical and optical properties of marine aerosols under seasonal winds. We investigated the change of visibility and haze frequency from 1974 to 2017 over the coastal East China Sea (ECS), and reconstructed the light extinction coefficients according to the chemical compositions of PM_2.5 samples collected at Huaniao Island in the ECS. The annual average visibility significantly decreased from over 25 km in the early 1970s to <18 km in recent 4 years. The occurrence of daily maximum haze frequency was approximately 3-h later with respect to land sites, which could be explained by the diffusion of air pollutants from nearby cities (haze peak around rush hour) to the coastal ECS as well as the formation of secondary aerosols enhanced by photochemical reactions around noon at the condition of affluent gaseous precursors. Meanwhile, anthropogenic chloride transported from the land could increase the concentration of Cl^- in marine aerosol, which may weaken the Cl^- depletion phenomenon over coastal ECS and even induced considerable Cl^- enrichment during the severe haze event in Jan. 2013. The largest contributor to the light extinction was (NH₄)₂SO₄ followed by NH₄NO₃ and OM in almost all seasons. Especially in winter and spring, (NH₄)₂SO₄ accounted for 45% and 52% of total light extinction, respectively. The estimated b_ext was lower than the monitored values, suggesting that the contribution of some aerosol components (e.g. NH₄Cl and large mode components) might be underestimated. Further study on the combination of observation and estimation of specific aerosol contribution to the visibility impairment are needed.
