Photocatalytic Activity of Ag Nanoparticles Deposited on Thermoexfoliated g-C3N4

The limited access to fresh water and the increased presence of emergent pollutants (EPs) in wastewater has increased the interest in developing strategies for wastewater remediation, including photocatalysis. Graphitic carbon nitride (g-C3N4) is a 2D non-metal material with outstanding properties, such as a 2.7 eV bandgap and physicochemical stability, making it a promising photocatalyst. This work reports the process of obtaining high-surface-area (SA) g-C3N4 using the thermal-exfoliation process and the posterior effect of Ag-nanoparticle loading over the exfoliated g-C3N4 surface. The photocatalytic activity of samples was evaluated through methylene blue (MB) degradation under visible-light radiation and correlated to its physical properties obtained by XRD, TEM, BET, and UV-Vis analyses. Moreover, 74% MB degradation was achieved by exfoliated g-C3N4 compared to its bulk counterpart (55%) in 180 min. Moreover, better photocatalytic performances (94% MB remotion) were registered at low Ag loading, with 5 wt.% as the optimal value. Such an improvement is attributed to the synergetic effect produced by a higher SA and the role of Ag nanoparticles in preventing charge-recombination processes. Based on the results, this work provides a simple and efficient methodology to obtain Ag/g-C3N4 photocatalysts with enhanced photocatalytic performance that is adequate for water remediation under sunlight conditions.

Ag-modified g-C3N4 with enhanced activity for the photocatalytic reduction of hexavalent chromium in the presence of EDTA under ultraviolet irradiation

The photocatalytic reduction of Cr6+ to Cr3+ in an aqueous solution, using 3 wt% Ag/g-C3N4 in the presence of ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA), has been investigated here. The photocatalytic reduction of Cr6+ with pure g-C3N4 was very low. The addition of Ag and EDTA can significantly improve the photocatalytic reduction of Cr6+ using g-C3N4. In the presence of EDTA, the efficiency with Ag/g-C3N4 was better than those with Au/g-C3N4 and Cu/g-C3N4. With EDTA, the reduction rate constant increased from 0.0005 for pure g-C3N4 to 0.12 min-1 for 3 wt% Ag/g-C3N4. By increasing the concentration of EDTA from 0 to 500 mg L-1, the reduction efficiency of Cr6+ increased extremely, and the rate constant raised from 0.008 to 0.12 min-1. The optimal EDTA concentration was 500 mg L-1 for the photocatalyst Ag/g-C3N4. The Ag-EDTA complex may be reduced to metallic silver by the conduction band electrons of g-C3N4. The electron-hole recombination was significantly suppressed by the electron trapping of Ag. EDTA may act in by the formation of Cr3+-complex and the separation of Cr3+ from the g-C3N4 surface and by the valence band hole scavenger of g-C3N4. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), scanning electron microscope (SEM), transmission electron microscope (TEM), X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), UV-Vis diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS) and photoluminescence spectra (PL) were used to characterize g-C3N4 and Ag/g-C3N4 nanoparticles. A possible mechanism for photocatalytic Cr6+ reduction has also been demonstrated.

Ag Loading Enhanced Photocatalytic Activity of g-C3N4 Porous Nanosheets for Decomposition of Organic Pollutants

The g-C3N4 porous nanosheets with different loading amount of Ag nanoparticles (NPs) are successfully prepared by a simple liquid-phase reduction method. These Ag/g-C3N4 composites have an improved photocatalytic performance for decomposing organic pollutants compared with that of pure g-C3N4 nanosheets. Many measurements have been used for characterizing the samples, such as XRD, FTIR, UV-Vis DRS, PL, XPS, EDS, SEM, and TEM. In Ag/g-C3N4, the Ag NPs are uniformly coated on the g-C3N4 surface, the diameter is mainly in the range of 8~18 nanometers. Loading of Ag NPs expand the response to the visible light for g-C3N4 and increasing the producing rate of photogenerated e--h+ pairs. The loading of silver NPs obviously enhances the photocatalytic activity of C3N4 nanosheets toward the Rhodamine B (RhB) decomposition under the simulated sunlight irradiation. With different loading amounts of Ag NPs, Ag/g-C3N4 (3 wt% of Ag) showed the highest photocatalytic activity for RhB decomposition among these as-prepared samples, which is 10 times of the rate of pure C3N4. Based on the experimental results, a possible photocatalytic mechanism for Ag/g-C3N4 is proposed.
