Menstrual pattern and anthropometric characteristics of women with primary and secondary infertility in comparison with age-matched controls

BACKGROUND

The incidence of infertility has increased significantly due to lifestyle changes and the presence of diverse environmental stress. Body mass index (BMI) and waist circumference (WC) are two common anthropometric measures of obesity. Factors such as differences in race, sex, and age influence BMI, and recent studies have reported limitations in the use of BMI to determine obesity. Body fat distribution has a more valid criterion for determining obesity than BMI. Our aim was to compare the menstrual pattern and anthropometric parameters of women with primary and secondary infertility with those of age-matched controls and to assess the correlation between the anthropometric variables and fertility types.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

A cross-sectional study was conducted in which the anthropometric measurements and menstrual history over the last 3 months of cases of primary and secondary infertility were compared with the age-matched control group.

RESULTS

Women with primary and secondary infertility tend to be overweight or obese. The menstrual pattern of women with infertility was not statistically different as compared to the control groups. There were significant differences in weight, BMI, hip circumference, WC, and neck circumference (NC) of women with primary infertility with those of age-matched controls. A statistically significant difference was noted in NC between the primary and secondary infertility groups.

CONCLUSION

The results obtained show that women with infertility tend to be overweight/obese. Due to the limited sample size, the relationship between menstrual pattern and anthropometric characteristics such as waist-to-hip ratio (WHR), waist-to-height ratio (WHtR), and frame size (FRS) and infertility could not be established.

HIV infection in adult Ugandans with new-onset type 2 diabetes: exploring its influence on the anthropometric and metabolic profile

OBJECTIVE

HIV infection increases the risk of type 2 diabetes and may influence its phenotypic profile. In this study, we aimed to compare the anthropometric and metabolic characteristics of HIV-infected and uninfected adult Ugandans with new-onset type 2 diabetes to evaluate the influence of HIV infection on specific surrogate markers of adiposity, insulin resistance, and pancreatic beta-cell function.

METHODS

We consecutively recruited 500 HIV-infected and uninfected adult Ugandans with new-onset type 2 diabetes (diagnosed in < 3 months) from seven tertiary hospitals over a 20-month period and compared their anthropometric and metabolic characteristics to identify any significant differences.

RESULTS

Of the 500 participants with new-onset type 2 diabetes, 59 (11.8%) had a self-reported history of HIV infection. Compared with HIV-uninfected participants with type 2 diabetes, participants with HIV infection and type 2 diabetes had a lower median (IQR) hip circumference (97.8 [91.0-106.0] cm vs. 104.0 [96.0-112.0], p = 0.002) and visceral fat level (8 [6-11] vs. 10 [7-12], p < 0.001) assessed using bioimpedance analysis. No statistically significant difference was noted with the markers of pancreatic beta-cell function (fasting, 30-minute, and 120-minute C-peptide concentrations, oral insulinogenic index, and homeostatic model assessment 2-beta cell function) and insulin resistance (homeostatic model assessment 2-insulin resistance) between both groups.

CONCLUSION

In our study population, HIV infection was not associated with increased adiposity, pancreatic beta-cell function, and insulin resistance. Large prospective studies are needed to investigate the effect of HIV on the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes in adult Ugandans.

Construction of an anthropometric discriminant model for identification of elite swimmers: an adaptive lasso approach

Background

Anthropometric characteristics are important factors that affect swimming performance. The aim of this study is to build a discriminant model using anthropometric factors to identify elite short-to-medium-distance freestyle swimmers through an adaptive Lasso approach.

Methods

The study recruited 254 swimmers (145 males and 109 females) who were divided them into elite (aged 17.9 ± 2.2 years, FINA points 793.8 ± 73.8) and non-elite (aged 17.1 ± 1.3 years, FINA points 560.6 ± 78.7) groups. Data for 73 variables were obtained, including basic information, anthropometric and derivative indicators. After filtering out highly correlated variables, 24 candidate variables were retained to be used in adaptive Lasso to select variables for prediction of elite swimmers. Deviance and area under the curve (AUC) were applied to assess the goodness of fit and prediction accuracy of the model, respectively.

Results

The adaptive Lasso selected 12 variables using the whole sample, with an AUC being 0.926 (95% CI [0.895-0.956]; P = 2.42 × 10^-29). In stratified analysis by gender, nine variables were selected for male swimmers with an AUC of 0.921 (95% CI [0.880-0.963]; P = 8.82 × 10^-17), and eight variables were for female swimmers with an AUC of 0.941 (95% CI [0.898-0.984]; P = 7.67 × 10^-15).

Conclusion

The adaptive Lasso showed satisfactory performance in selecting anthropometric characteristics to identify elite swimmers. Additional studies with longitudinal data or data from other ethnicities are needed to validate our findings.

Impact of body fat, body water content, and skeletal muscle mass index on peak salivary lactate levels after squat jump exercise in healthy non-athlete adult males

BACKGROUND

In the rehabilitation and sports science fields, comprehensive assessment of the response to exercise is important for accurately prescribing exercise programs. Lactate is an important energy substrate that is frequently measured in clinical practice because it provides information on aerobic capacity. Salivary lactate, which can be measured non-invasively, has recently been focused on as an alternative to blood lactate. This study aimed to determine the combined effects of body fat, body water content, and skeletal muscle mass index on peak salivary lactate levels.

METHODS

Thirty-seven non-athletic males performed a squat jump exercise. Their salivary lactate levels were measured before, immediately after, and every 5 min after the exercise using a simplified device. We also assessed body composition. A linear multiple regression analysis was performed with peak salivary lactate levels as the dependent variable and body fat ratio, body water content, and the skeletal muscle mass index as independent variables.

RESULTS

The participants' body fat ratio (positive effect; p = 0.001) and body water content (negative effect; p = 0.035) significantly affected peak salivary lactate levels. Skeletal muscle mass index tended to positively influence salivary lactate levels (p = 0.099), albeit not significantly. The adjusted R-squared value of the model was 0.312 (p = 0.001).

CONCLUSIONS

The combined effect of body fat, body water content, and skeletal muscle mass index on peak salivary lactate levels was 31.2%. Better nutritional guidance may be effective in promoting weight loss and increasing body water content to improve aerobic capacity in the rehabilitation setting.

Evaluation of Normal Renal Size and its Influencing Factors: A Cross-Sectional Study on the Adult Population of Mashhad

BACKGROUND

The normal range of kidney size is a controversial issue among different populations given to its impressibility by multiple factors, therefore, this study aimed to provide valid reference ranges for kidney dimensions in the adult population of Mashhad. Also, we assessed the association of kidney size characteristics with some personal predisposing factors.

METHODS

This cross-sectional study was conducted on 938 healthy individuals. Ultrasound measurement, physical examination, and laboratory analysis were performed. Demographic, dietary, and anthropometric data were obtained. The variables were categorized into 5 groups each, and data analysis were performed using the following statistical tests: Pearson correlation test, variance analysis, t-test, and chi-square test. A value of p<0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

Weight had the most association with kidney size followed to a lesser extent by height and age. Even after adjustment for other confounding variables, weight remained as an independent factor, while this effect was resolved for height and age. Also, all values for renal function, body bio-impedance, blood pressure components, and water intake were notably correlated with kidney size.

CONCLUSION

This study determined the normal kidney size in healthy adults. We also declared the normal range of kidney size is a dynamic concept and should be assessed for each individual separately according to their personal determinative factors.

Identification of hypertriglyceridemia based on bone density, body fat mass, and anthropometry in a Korean population

BACKGROUND

Hypertriglyceridemia is strongly associated with the risks of cardiovascular disease, coronary heart disease, and metabolic syndrome. The relationship between hypertriglyceridemia or high triglyceride levels and bone mineral density remains controversial. Furthermore, to date, no study has simultaneously examined the association among hypertriglyceridemia, bone area, bone mineral content, bone mineral density, body fat mass, and anthropometrics. The present study aimed to evaluate the association among hypertriglyceridemia, anthropometrics and various bone density and body fat composition variables to identify the best indicator of hypertriglyceridemia in a Korean population.

METHODS

The data were obtained from the fifth Korea National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. In total, 3918 subjects aged 20-80 years participated in this study. In the variable analysis of the waist circumference (WC), trunk fat mass (Trk-Ft), body mass index, etc., a binary logistic regression analysis was performed to examine the significance of the differences between the normal group and hypertriglyceridemia groups.

RESULTS

In both men and women, the WC showed the strongest association with hypertriglyceridemia in the crude analysis (odds ratio (OR) = 1.738 [confidence interval = 1.529-1.976] and OR = 2.075 [1.797-2.397]), but the Trk-Ft was the most strongly associated with the disease after adjusting for age and body mass index (adjusted OR = 1.565 [1.262-1.941] and adjusted OR = 1.730 [1.291-2.319]). In particular, the Pelvis area (Plv-A) was the most significant among the bone variables in women (adjusted OR = 0.641 [0.515-0.796]). In the predictive power analysis, the best indicator of hypertriglyceridemia was WC in women (the area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) = 0.718 [0.685-0.751]) and Trk-Ft in men (AUC = 0.672 [0.643-0.702]). The WC was also the most predictive among the anthropometric variables in men (AUC = 0.670 [0.641-0.700]). The strength of the association and predictive power was stronger in women than in men.

CONCLUSIONS

The WC in women and Trk-Ft in men exhibited the best predictive power for hypertriglyceridemia. Our findings support the use of basic information for the identification of hypertriglyceridemia or high triglyceride levels in initial health screening efforts.

Epidemiology of injuries in the Spanish national futsal male team: a five-season retrospective study

Background

Futsal started being played in 1930 and the number of futsal players has increased all over the world ever since. Nonetheless, despite the fact that Spain is one of the most relevant national teams worldwide, information on the incidence of injuries and their anthropometric characteristics is sparse in this country.

Aim

To analyse medical assistance provided to players in their prematch concentration camps with the Spanish national team over five seasons, from 2010–2011 to 2014–2015, and also to collect data regarding anthropometric characteristics.

Materials and methods

This is a retrospective and detailed study of injuries players suffered over these five seasons. All variables were registered on an Excel spreadsheet and later analysed statistically.

Results

411 injuries were studied in total. The dominant somatotype was mesomorph and the injured pivots were both the most endomorphic and the most mesomorphic. The most injured body structure was the hamstring muscles, occurring due to training and intrinsic mechanisms, where fatigue was the most frequent diagnosis. Only a few complementary examinations were carried out and prematch withdrawal was rare.

Discussion

The skinfold test total sum was lower than that of the Spanish 11-a-side players or than that in the lower category futsal Spanish players. In various research studies analysing exclusively injuries occurring in matches, the most frequent injury is ligament injury by extrinsic mechanism. The body mass index was not a useful parameter when assessing players’ appropriate weight. Most injuries occurred in training sessions, mostly by intrinsic mechanism; the highest percentage of traumatic injuries occurred in official matches.

Maternal anthropometric characteristics as determinants of birth weight in north-west Nigeria: prospective study

OBJECTIVE

This study was undertaken to determine the sensitivity and specificity of anthropometric measurements in predicting birth weight.

METHODS

This was a prospective study. Interviewer-administered questionnaires were used. Two hundred were used. The weight, height and BMI of the women were measured. Unclothed newborns were weighed immediately after delivery. The data obtained were analyzed using SPSS version 16.0 statistical software. The accuracy of maternal weight, height and body mass index in predicting birth weight was compared using chi-squared test and p < 0.05 was considered statistically significant.

RESULT

The mean maternal age was 28.2 ± 5.7 years. The mean parity was 3 ± 2. The mean gestational age at delivery was 38.5 ± 2 years. The mean actual birth weight was 3.27 ± 0.53 kg. The mean maternal weight was 72.03 ± 11 kg. Maternal weight showed a strong positive correlation with birth weight (r = 0.48) and this was statistically significant (p < 0.001). The mean maternal height was 1.64 ± 0.55 m. The mean maternal BMI was 27.9 ± 4.33. Maternal weight, height and BMI had sensitivities of 50%, 40% and 50% and specificities of 48%, 57.9% and 67.3%, respectively.

CONCLUSION

Maternal weight, height and BMI are not good predictors of birth weight and cannot be recommended for use as screening test in poor resource setting where ultrasound available.
