Rapid start-up and operational characteristics of partial denitrification coupled with anammox driven by innovative strategies

The Partial Denitrification-Anammox (PD/A) process established a low-consumption, efficient and sustainable pathway for complete nitrogen removal, which is of great interest to the industry. Rapid initiation and stable operation of the PD/A systems were the main issues limiting its engineering application in wastewater nitrogen removal. A PD/A system was initiated in a continuous stirred-tank reactors (CSTRs) in the presence of low concentration of organic matter, and the effects of organic matter types and COD/NO3--N ratios on the performance of the PD/A system, and microbial community characteristics were explored. The results showed that low concentrations of organic matter could promote the rapid initiation of the Anammox process and then the strategy of gradually replacing NO2--N with NO3--N could successfully initiate the PD/A system at 70 days. The type of organic matter had a significant effect on the initiation of the Anammox and the establishment of the PD/A system. Compared to glucose, sodium acetate was more favorable for rapid start-up and the synergy among microorganisms, and organic matter was lower, with an optimal COD/NO3--N ratio of 3.0. Microorganisms differed in their sensitivity to environmental factors. The relative abundance of Planctomycetota and Proteobacteria in R2 was 51 %, with the presence of three typical anammox bacteria, Candidatus_Brocadia, Candidatus_Kuenenia, and Candidatus_Jettenia in the system. This study provides a new strategy for the rapid initiation and stable operation of the PD/A process.

Thermophilic bacteria combined with alkyl polyglucose pretreated mariculture solid wastes using as denitrification carbon source for marine recirculating aquaculture wastewater treatment

In marine recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS), efficient nitrogen removal is challenging due to the high NO₃^--N concentration, low organic matters content, and high salinity. In this study, mariculture solid wastes (MSW) acidogenic liquid pretreated by thermophilic bacteria (TB) combined with alkyl polyglucose (APG) was first used as carbon source for denitrification to remove NO₃^--N. TB + APG pretreatment could accelerate the hydrolysis of MSW, and the highest volatile fatty acids (VFAs) yield (40.3%) was obtained with TB + 0.2 g/g VSS APG pretreatment. MSW acidogenic liquid pretreated by TB + 0.2 g/g VSS APG was a reliable carbon source for denitrification, and the optimum COD/NO₃^--N ratio (C/N) was 8 with no residue of NO_x^--N. VFAs were more effectively utilized by denitrifiers than carbohydrate and protein. The high denitrification potential (P_DN) and denitrification rate (V_DN) indicated the higher denitrification ability at C/N of 8 using MSW acidogenic liquid as carbon source. The outcomes of this work could provide useful information for promoting technological innovation in marine RAS wastewater treatment.

Denitrification of low C/N landfill leachate in lab-scale landfill simulation bioreactors

Old landfill leachate can be characterized by high ammonia nitrogen concentrations and limited biodegradable carbon availability. A promising and cost-effective option for ammonia nitrogen removal involves ex situ nitrification and in situ denitrification. This study aimed to investigate the denitrification capacity of old MSW in six landfill bioreactors with very low COD/NO₃^--N mass ratios that ranged between 0.12 and 3.99 g/g. In particular, this study is novel in that it tested COD/NO₃^--N mass ratios lower than previous studies. The experiment lasted 83 days. The results showed that denitrification occurred in all bioreactors and even at considerably low concentrations of biodegradable organic matter (BOD₅ ≤ 9 mg O₂/L). In all but one case, when nitrate removal stopped at 55% due to the absence of leachate recirculation, nitrate removal was higher than 95%. The average nitrate removal rates (ANRRs), calculated under significantly different conditions, ranged from 33 to 135 mg NO₃^--N/L/d. The initial COD concentration and COD/NO₃^--N ratio did not appear to affect the ANRRs, which were influenced by the initial nitrate concentration and leachate recirculation. The maximum ANRR (135 mg NO₃^--N/L/d) was measured with the highest initial nitrate concentration (4491 mg NO₃^--N/L) and the lowest COD/NO₃^--N mass ratio (0.12 g COD/g NO₃^--N). The lowest ANRR (33 mg NO₃^--N/L/d) was calculated for a bioreactor with no leachate recirculation. Sulphate production observed in some bioreactors may suggest that, together with the heterotrophic pathway, autotrophic denitrification contributed to the removal of nitrate, especially in bioreactors with low COD/NO₃^--N mass ratio.
