Classification of stages in cervical cancer MRI by customized CNN and transfer learning

Cervical cancer is the common cancer among women, where early-stage diagnoses of cervical cancer lead to recovery from the deadly cervical cancer. Correct cervical cancer staging is predominant to decide the treatment. Hence, cervical cancer staging is an important problem in designing automatic detection and diagnosing applications of the medical field. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) often plays a greater role in object identification and classification. The performance of CNN in medical image classification can already compete with radiologists. In this paper, we planned to build a deep Capsule Network (CapsNet) for medical image classification that can achieve high accuracy using cervical cancer Magnetic Resonance (MR) images. In this study, a customized deep CNN model is developed using CapsNet to automatically predict the cervical cancer from MR images. In CapsNet, each layer receives input from all preceding layers, which helps to classify the features. The hyper parameters are estimated and it controls the backpropagation gradient at the initial learning. To improve the CapsNet performance, residual blocks are included between dense layers. Training and testing are performed with around 12,771 T2-weighted MR images of the TCGA-CESC dataset publicly available for research work. The results show that the accuracy of Customized CNN using CapsNetis higher and behaves well in classifying the cervical cancer. Thus, it is evident that CNN models can be used in developing automatic image analysis tools in the medical field.

A lightweight capsule network architecture for detection of COVID-19 from lung CT scans

COVID-19, a novel coronavirus, has spread quickly and produced a worldwide respiratory ailment outbreak. There is a need for large-scale screening to prevent the spreading of the disease. When compared with the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) test, computed tomography (CT) is far more consistent, concrete, and precise in detecting COVID-19 patients through clinical diagnosis. An architecture based on deep learning has been proposed by integrating a capsule network with different variants of convolution neural networks. DenseNet, ResNet, VGGNet, and MobileNet are utilized with CapsNet to detect COVID-19 cases using lung computed tomography scans. It has found that all the four models are providing adequate accuracy, among which the VGGCapsNet, DenseCapsNet, and MobileCapsNet models have gained the highest accuracy of 99%. An Android-based app can be deployed using MobileCapsNet model to detect COVID-19 as it is a lightweight model and best suited for handheld devices like a mobile.

Prediction of Peptide Detectability Based on CapsNet and Convolutional Block Attention Module

According to proteomics technology, as impacted by the complexity of sampling in the experimental process, several problems remain with the reproducibility of mass spectrometry experiments, and the peptide identification and quantitative results continue to be random. Predicting the detectability exhibited by peptides can optimize the mentioned results to be more accurate, so such a prediction is of high research significance. This study builds a novel method to predict the detectability of peptides by complying with the capsule network (CapsNet) and the convolutional block attention module (CBAM). First, the residue conical coordinate (RCC), the amino acid composition (AAC), the dipeptide composition (DPC), and the sequence embedding code (SEC) are extracted as the peptide chain features. Subsequently, these features are divided into the biological feature and sequence feature, and separately inputted into the neural network of CapsNet. Moreover, the attention module CBAM is added to the network to assign weights to channels and spaces, as an attempt to enhance the feature learning and improve the network training effect. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed method, it is compared with some other popular methods. As revealed from the experimentally achieved results, the proposed method outperforms those methods in most performance assessments.

Melanoma Recognition by Fusing Convolutional Blocks and Dynamic Routing between Capsules

Simple Summary

The early treatment of skin cancer can effectively reduce mortality rates. Recently, automatic melanoma diagnosis from skin images has gained attention, which was mainly encouraged by the well-known challenge developed by the International Skin Imaging Collaboration project. The majority of contestant submitted Convolutional Neural Network based solutions. However, this type of model presents disadvantages. As a consequence, Dynamic Routing between Capsules has been proposed to overcome such limitations. The aim of our proposal was to assess the advantages of combining both architectures. An extensive experimental study showed the proposal significantly outperformed state-of-the-art models, achieving 166% higher predictive performance compared to ResNet in non-dermoscopic images. In addition, the pixels activated during prediction were shown, which allows to assess the rationale to give such a conclusion. Finally, more research should be conducted in order to demonstrate the potential of this neural network architecture in other areas.

Abstract

Skin cancer is one of the most common types of cancers in the world, with melanoma being the most lethal form. Automatic melanoma diagnosis from skin images has recently gained attention within the machine learning community, due to the complexity involved. In the past few years, convolutional neural network models have been commonly used to approach this issue. This type of model, however, presents disadvantages that sometimes hamper its application in real-world situations, e.g., the construction of transformation-invariant models and their inability to consider spatial hierarchies between entities within an image. Recently, Dynamic Routing between Capsules architecture (CapsNet) has been proposed to overcome such limitations. This work is aimed at proposing a new architecture which combines convolutional blocks with a customized CapsNet architecture, allowing for the extraction of richer abstract features. This architecture uses high-quality 299×299×3 skin lesion images, and a hyper-tuning of the main parameters is performed in order to ensure effective learning under limited training data. An extensive experimental study on eleven image datasets was conducted where the proposal significantly outperformed several state-of-the-art models. Finally, predictions made by the model were validated through the application of two modern model-agnostic interpretation tools.

Emotion Recognition from Multiband EEG Signals Using CapsNet

Emotion recognition based on multi-channel electroencephalograph (EEG) signals is becoming increasingly attractive. However, the conventional methods ignore the spatial characteristics of EEG signals, which also contain salient information related to emotion states. In this paper, a deep learning framework based on a multiband feature matrix (MFM) and a capsule network (CapsNet) is proposed. In the framework, the frequency domain, spatial characteristics, and frequency band characteristics of the multi-channel EEG signals are combined to construct the MFM. Then, the CapsNet model is introduced to recognize emotion states according to the input MFM. Experiments conducted on the dataset for emotion analysis using EEG, physiological, and video signals (DEAP) indicate that the proposed method outperforms most of the common models. The experimental results demonstrate that the three characteristics contained in the MFM were complementary and the capsule network was more suitable for mining and utilizing the three correlation characteristics.

Fluorescence microscopy image classification of 2D HeLa cells based on the CapsNet neural network

The development of computer technology now allows the quick and efficient automatic fluorescence microscopy generation of a large number of images of proteins in specific subcellular compartments using fluorescence microscopy. Digital image processing and pattern recognition technology can easily classify these images, identify the subcellular location of proteins, and subsequently carry out related work such as analysis and investigation of protein function. Here, based on a fluorescence microscopy 2D image dataset of HeLa cells, the CapsNet network model was used to classify ten types of images of proteins in different subcellular compartments. Capsules in the CapsNet network model were trained to capture the possibility of certain features and variants rather than to capture the characteristics of a specific variant. The capsule at the same level predicted the instantiation parameters of the higher level capsule through the transformation matrix, and the higher level capsule became active when multiple dynamic routing forecasts were consistent. Experiments show that using the CapsNet network model to classify 2D HeLa datasets can achieve higher accuracy. Graphical abstract ᅟ.
