A nanocellulose-based flexible multilayer sensor with high sensitivity to humidity and strain response for detecting human motion and respiration

Biomass-based flexible sensors with excellent mechanical and sensing properties have attracted significant attention. In this study, based on the excellent dispersibility and degradability of nanocellulose crystals, we designed a polyvinyl alcohol/nanocellulose crystals/phytic acid (PCP) composite film with good flexibility and high sensitivity to humidity. A layer of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) and nanocellulose crystals (CNC) was further sandwiched between two PCP layers as a flexible multifunctional sensor (PCPW) to detect human movement and respiration. Phytic acid contains abundant phosphate groups that enhance proton conduction, allowing the PCPW composite film to change its electrical resistance in a sensitive and repeatable manner when the relative humidity was varied between 35 %-93 %. Meanwhile, CNC derived from sisal fibers enhanced the PCPW sensor's conductivity (3.3 S/m) and mechanical properties (elongation at break: 99 %) by improving the dispersion and connectivity of MWCNT. The PCPW sensor displayed a high sensitivity to strain (gauge factor: 49.5) and could monitor both facial expressions (smiling and winking) and the bending of joints. The sensor also generated stable electrical responses during breathing and blowing due to the change in humidity. Therefore, this biodegradable and multifunctional sensor has good application prospects.

Cellulose polymers with β-amino ester pendant group: design, synthesis, molecular docking and application in adsorption of toxic metals from wastewater

BACKGROUND

Cellulose polymers with multidentate chelating functionalities that have high efficiency for toxic metal ions present in water were designed, synthesized, and analyzed. The synthesis was carried out by reacting microcrystalline cellulose extracted from the solid waste of the olive industry with tert-Butyl acetoacetate (Cell-AA), produced cellulose with β-ketoester functionality was then reacted with aniline and the amino acid glycine to produce Cell-β-AN and Cell-β-GL, respectively.

RESULTS

The adsorption efficiency of the three polymers toward Pb(II) and various toxic metal ions present in sewage was evaluated as a function of adsorbent dose, time, temperature, pH value, and initial ion concentration to determine optimum adsorption conditions. The three polymers showed excellent efficiency toward about 20 metal ions present in a sewage sample collected from the sewer. The adsorption process follows the Langmuir adsorption isotherm model with a second-order of adsorption rate, the calculated qe values (2.675, 15.252, 20.856 mg/g) were close to the experimental qe values (2.133, 13.91, 18.786 mg/g) for the three polymers Cell-AA, Cell-β-AG and Cell-β-AN, respectively. Molecular Dynamic (MD) and Monte Carlo (MC) simulations were performed on the three polymers complexed with Pb(II).

CONCLUSION

The waste material of the olive industry was used as a precursor for making the target cellulose polymers with β-Amino Ester Pendant Group. The polymer was characterized by SEM, proton NMR, TGA, and FT-IR spectroscopy. The efficacy of adsorption was quantitative for metal ions present in a real sample of wastewater and the efficiency didn't drop even after 7 cycles of use. The results indicate the existence of strong complexation. The thermodynamic study results showed a spontaneous bonding between of Pb(II) and the polymers pendant groups expressed by the negative value of the Gibbs free energy.

Preparation and characterization of spherical cellulose nanocrystals with high purity by the composite enzymolysis of pulp fibers

The spherical cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) with high purity were prepared, the processes included composite enzymolysis of pulp fibers and the purification of product. The impurities in the crude product CNCs were analyzed with FTIR, coomassie brilliant blue-G250 and ionic chromatography. The pure CNCs were characterized with SEM, XRD, DLS and TGA. The results indicated that the crude CNCs was flocculated and washed twice with a dilute acid solution (pH = 2) to get pure spherical CNCs, the purity was approximate 99.99%. The obtained pure spherical CNCs had a narrow particle size distribution with diameter 15-40 nm. FTIR and XRD analyses proved that the crystal phase of the spherical CNCs did not change, but the crystallinity decreased slightly compared with pulp fibers. The thermal degradation showed that the spherical CNCs had better thermal stability than one from other methods, and the temperature of maximum weight loss rate (T_max) was 329.2 °C.
