Abstract
BACKGROUND Novel interfascial plane blocks like PEricapsular Nerve Group (PENG) and SupraInguinal Fascia Iliaca (SIFI) blocks are effective for management of hip fracture pain. We compared the difference in the distribution of the dye injected and nerves stained by the addition of the SIFI block to the PENG block. METHODS A total of 24 designated dye injections were performed in eight soft-embalmed cadavers. Under ultrasound guidance 20 ml green ink injected bilaterally in PENG block and 30 ml methylene blue dye was injected in the SIFI block on the right side. The cadavers were dissected 24 h later to assess the extent of dye spread. RESULTS Extensive spread of dyes was seen on both side of iliacus muscle on the right side, but blue dye was not visible medial to the psoas tendon. The subcostal and iliohypogastric nerves were stained green in the infra-inguinal region. On the left side (PENG alone), the anterior division of the obturator, femoral and saphenous nerve (7/8) and iliohypogastric nerves (3/8) were stained in the infrainguinal region. In the suprainguinal region, the femoral nerve (5/8), accessory obturator nerve (3/8), lateral femoral cutaneous (1/8) and nerve to rectus femoris (4/8) were stained. The main obturator nerve trunk was spared with both injections while its anterior branch and accessory obturator nerve were stained with the PENG injection. CONCLUSION The study findings indicate that combined PENG + SIFI injections lead to an extensive craniocaudal and longitudinal spread along the iliacus muscle. We perceive that the combination of these two injections will have a superior clinical outcome.

Abstract
Purpose To describe the first reported case of outer retinal damage following the use of Membrane Blue Dual for epiretinal membrane (ERM) surgery. Observations A 74-year-old female underwent pars plana vitrectomy and ERM peeling assisted with Membrane Blue Dual for an idiopathic ERM. Postoperatively, the patient reported a decline in visual acuity with a central scotoma. Fundus examination revealed a well-defined retinal whitening in the peeling area which evolved into pigmentary changes as confirmed by fundus autofluorescence. Optical coherence tomography (OCT) showed loss of outer retinal layers and irregular mottling of the retinal pigment epithelium. Fundus and OCT appearance remained unchanged after 4 months and the central scotoma also persisted. Conclusions and Importance ERM surgery assisted with Membrane Blue Dual can induce major changes in retinal pigment epithelium and outer retinal layers. This adverse event which probably results from combined light and dye toxicity should be considered by all surgeons even though its occurrence is rare.

Abstract
Background The pharmacological actions of Curcuma aromatica (wild turmeric) such as anti-inflammatory, antitumor, antifungal, antimicrobial and wound healing have been recognized since ages. However, its role as a natural histological stain has not been explored till date. Aim To evaluate the efficacy of natural substance-Kumkum prepared from the extract of C. aromatica and slaked lime in staining the biopsied oral tissues. Materials and Methods A cohort study that used 60 formalin fixed paraffin embedded soft and hard tissue specimens from institutional archives were subjected to sectioning and stained using Kumkum and hematoxylin and eosin (H and E). The slides were evaluated for their staining efficacy and results were statistically analyzed using Wilcoxon signed-rank test and Independent 't' test. Results The mean of the overall parameters assessed for staining efficacy did not show statistically significant difference between the study groups in normal and pathological specimens for tooth (P = 0.410 and 0.484), bone (P = 0.133 and 0.157) and soft tissues (P = 0.186 and 0.113), respectively. This suggests that Kumkum staining efficacy is equivalent to that of routine H and E for oral tissues. Structures such as dentinoenamel junction, dentinal tubules, incremental lines of cementum, reversal and resting lines, osteocytic canaliculi, mature and immature bone could be appreciated better in Kumkum stained slides, thereby rendering a special staining property to Kumkum stain. Conclusion To our knowledge, this study is the first of its kind to have used Kumkum stain obtained from C. aromatica for the differentiation of the components of tooth, bone and soft tissue structures in histostaining of oral tissues. The naturally prepared Kumkum stain possesses dual staining property both in routine and differential staining. This facilitates diagnosis of fibro-osseous lesions, bony, collagen and muscular pathologies. The natural stain also finds application in forensic odontology for age estimation.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Anaphylaxis is a constant perioperative concern due to the exposure to several agents capable of inducing hypersensitivity reactions. Patent blue V (PBV), also known as Sulfan Blue, a synthetic dye used in sentinel node research in breast surgery, is responsible for 0.6% of reported anaphylactic conditions. We present a case of a 49-year-old female patient who underwent left breast tumorectomy with sentinel lymph node staging using PBV and experienced an anaphylactic reaction. METHODS We conducted a literature search through PubMed for case reports, case series, reviews, and systematic reviews since 2005 with the keywords "anaphylaxis" and "patent blue". We then included articles found in these publications' reference sections. RESULTS We found 12 relevant publications regarding this topic. The main findings are summarized, with information regarding the clinical presentation, management, and investigation protocol. Hypotension is the most common clinical manifestation. The presentation is usually delayed when compared with anaphylaxis from other agents, and cutaneous manifestations are occasionally absent. Patients may have had previous exposure to the dye, used also as a food, clothes and drug colorant. CONCLUSION The diagnosis of anaphylaxis in patients under sedation or general anesthesia may be difficult due to particularities of the perioperative context. According to the published literature, the presentation of the reaction is similar in most cases and a heightened clinical sense is key to address the situation appropriately. Finding the agent responsible for the allergic reaction is of paramount importance to prevent future episodes.

Abstract
Image-guided localization materials are constantly evolving, providing options for the localization of small pulmonary nodules to guide minimally invasive thoracic surgery. Several preoperative methods have been developed to localize small pulmonary lesions prior to video-assisted thoracic surgery. These localization techniques can be categorized into 4 groups according to the materials used: localization with metallic materials (hook-wire, microcoil, or spiral coil), localization with dye (methylene blue or indigo carmine), localization with contrast agents (lipiodol, barium, or iodine contrast agents), and radiotracers (technetium-99m). However, the optimal localization method has not yet been established. In this review article, we discuss the various localization techniques and the advantages and disadvantages of localization techniques as well as the available safety and efficacy data on these techniques.

Abstract
Objective: To observe the clinical effect of corneal staining in patients with corneal leucoma. Methods: Restrospective case series study.Thirty eyes of 30 patients (17 males, 13 females) with corneal leucoma who underwent corneal interlamellar staining at Beijing Aier-Intech Eye Hospital from October 2014 to July 2018 were included. The mean age was 31.50±15.66 years. Postoperative follow-up was more than 1 year. All the patients underwent appearance examination, anterior segment examination with a slit lamp, B-scan examination and anterior segment OCT examination preoperatively and postoperatively. The effect of corneal staining, patient satisfaction and the incidence of complications were investigated. Results: The corneal epithelium of all the patients healed completely within 1-3 days after operation. The mean follow-up period was 30.68±18.02 months (range, 12.37-58.10 months). During the postoperative follow-up period, no staining permeation or inflammatory reaction in the anterior chamber occurred. The corneal color and appearance were well maintained in 18 patients (72.0%). Seven patients (28.0%) showed mild corneal color-fading. One patient was treated with enucleation and orbital hydroxyapatite implantation because of eye atrophy and corneal banding degeneration caused by the primary disease at 4 years after operation. The surgeon was satisfied with the improvement of the appearance of all cases; 22 patients (88.0%) were satisfied with the postoperative appearance. No significant complications were observed in all the cases. Conclusions: Corneal interlamellar staining is one of best choices for the treatment of corneal leucoma. It has advantages of quick postoperative recovery, long-standing color staining and good cosmetic effect. The operation is simple and easy to carry out and there is no obvious damage to eye tissues. Abstract
Objective: To investigate the feasibility and application value of toluidine bule-dextran-40 (TB-Dex-40) as the tracer for lymphatic system in head and neck region. Methods: Twenty healthy adult New Zealand white rabbits were equally divided into two groups: the experimental group (TB-Dex-40 group, n=10) and the control group (TB group, n=10). Rabbits in experimental group received submucosal injection of 1.0% (0.14 mOsm/L) TB-Dex-40, and the control group received injection of 1.0% (32.60 mOsm/L) TB.The staining time and fading time of lymphatic vessels and lymphnodes in the neck region were recorded, and the diffusion ranges of the two dyes in the tongue region were measured. Lymph nodespecimen were collected for pathological examination after 10 min, 1 hour and 4 weeks of staining. The experimental animals were sacrificed before and 4 weeks after the experiment. After death, organs of heart, lung, liver and kidney were examined pathologically. Results: TB-Dex-40 reached sentinel lymph node (SLN) and stained lymphatic vessels at an average of (21.67±0.19) s after injection, while in control group was(3.22±0.34) s (P<0.01). The time difference between the two dyes reaching sentinel lymph nodes was statistically significant.The durations from lymphatic staining to marked fading were (19.70±1.34) min in experimental group and (14.30±0.95) min in control group, respectively.The difference was statistically significant (P<0.01). SLN staining by TB-Dex-40 was still evident after 4 weeks, while TB staining has completely faded after 2 d.The average ranges of diffusionin tongue were (10.50±1.08) mm in experimental group and (20.00±1.05) mm in controlgroup, respectively. The difference was statistically significant (P<0.01).No abnormalities were found in blood test and pathological examination of main organs. Conclusions: TB-Dex-40 has high specificity forstaining lymphatic vessels and is a good tracer with potential clinical value.

Abstract
INTRODUCTION Bleached enamel surfaces may undergo changes and retain more dye, which is a reason to recommend the reduction/suspension of foods with dyes during dental bleaching. AIM Evaluate the effects of the action of natural and artificial dyes on the bleached enamel of extracted human teeth. MATERIALS AND METHODS Fifty human premolars were used, which were distributed in 5 groups (n = 10) according to the following staining solutions: GW (distilled water); GB (beet); Gca (caramel); GC (carmine); and GR (red 40). After the removal of the root and pulp section, the teeth were embedded in acrylic resin blocks, stored in artificial saliva, and kept at 37°C. At-home bleaching was performed using 16% carbamide peroxide (CP) for 3 hours daily for 3 weeks. After each daily session of bleaching, the specimens were exposed to the dye solution twice a day for 5 min; one of these exposures was performed immediately after bleaching. The color was recorded using a spectrophotometer according to the CIE Lab system (Δ E) for the following periods: baseline, during bleaching (after 1st, 2nd, and 3rd week) and post-bleaching (after 1 week and 1 month). The color was evaluated by two-way analysis of variance and Tukey's test (α=0.05). RESULTS There was effective dental bleaching for all groups: GW (18.5 ± 6.1), GB (19.9 ± 4.4), Gca (18.9 ± 6.1), GC (20.2 ± 4.6), and GR (19.3 ± 4.2), p <0.01. No color rebound was observed after 1 week and 1 month (p >0.05). CONCLUSION The exposure to beet, carmine, caramel, and red 40 dyes did not interfere with the effectiveness of dental bleaching using 16% CP. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Dyes consumption during bleaching did not affect the effectiveness of dental bleaching.

Abstract
Aim This study aimed to clarify whether dental plaque disclosing before professional prophylaxis would improve the visualization of dental plaque, therefore optimizing the procedure. Materials and methods The sample comprised both the smooth and occlusal surfaces of the teeth of 25 children from 18 to 36 months. A randomized crossover clinical trial was conducted with two groups: GI—with disclosing and GII—without disclosing (washout/1 month). The teeth were stained with 1% malachite green solution to assess the amount of dental plaque on smooth and occlusal surfaces. Results Dental plaque removal was more effective and statistically faster (391.27 seconds ±142.2) in GI. The plaque index and the prophylaxis duration were inversely related in GI. The child's behavior did not affect the plaque removal effectiveness, regardless of plaque disclosure (p > 0.05). Conclusion Dental plaque disclosing in young children is an effective and less time-consuming method that improves the quality of the professional dental prophylaxis. Clinical significance Biofilm control is important for the success of programs for prevention of early childhood caries (ECC) and considering the particularities inherent to the dental care of infants, it is necessary that periodic professional prophylaxis is effective in eliminating the oral biofilm, ideally reducing chair time. Although dental plaque disclosing has been traditionally performed on educational basis during oral hygiene instruction, this resource can be safely employed to help professional prophylaxis in infants. Abstract
The diagnosis of peritoneal endometriosis during laparoscopy may be difficult due to the polymorphic aspects of the lesions. Enhanced imaging using contrast agents has potential to provide a better identification of peritoneal endometriosis. The aim of this systematic review is to provide an overview of the literature on what is known about the intraoperative laparoscopic visual enhancement of peritoneal endometriosis using contrast agents. A systematic review was done of studies about enhanced imaging during laparoscopy for endometriosis using contrast agents. Clinical studies which contained a description of imaging with a contrast agent and also reported visual findings of endometriosis during laparoscopy, were included. Nine suitable studies were identified. Intraoperative visualization of endometriosis was analyzed with or without histologic confirmation. Four studies evaluated 5-aminolevulinic acid-induced fluorescence (5-ALA), 1 study evaluated indigo carmine, 2 studies evaluated methylene blue (MB), 1 study evaluated indocyanine green (ICG) and 1 study evaluated so-called bloody peritoneal fluid painting. All studies, with a combined total of 171 included patients, showed potential of enhanced visibility of endometriosis using contrast agents. A combined total of 7 complications, all related to the use of 5-ALA, were reported. We conclude that the use of contrast-based enhanced imaging during laparoscopy is promising and that it can provide a better visualization of peritoneal endometriosis. However, based on the limited data no technique of preference can yet be identified.

Abstract
Introduction: Lugol is helpful in identifying early second primary tumors (SPTs) during oroscopy and pharyngoscopy, but this technique has not been assessed during follow-up visits with these patients. Aim: The aim of this study is to describe the use of Lugol (a low-cost method) to diagnose SPTs in the oral cavity and oropharynx. Methods: Patients treated for squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck were randomly assigned to two groups. Group A was examined with routine oroscopy and pharyngoscopy without Lugol, and Group B was examined with routine oroscopy and pharyngoscopy without stain and with Lugol. A total of 211 patients were included during 4 years. Results: Six oral and oropharynx carcinomas were detected in Group A. Eighteen oral and oropharynx carcinomas were detected in Group B, twelve of which were not seen without chromoscopy but were detected with Lugol. Conclusion: Lugol increases the detection of malignant lesions compared to routine examination alone.
