Novel sodium percarbonate-MnO2 effervescent tablets for efficient and moderate membrane cleaning

Membrane flux recovery efficiency and durability are two key factors closely associated with the practical application for membrane cleaning process. However, conventional chemical membrane cleaning method by soaking the whole membrane module in highly concentrated chemical reagents has prominent drawbacks including the low mass transfer efficiency of reagents, long period of washing time, and the potential threat to membrane structure. Herein, for the first time, we report a facile approach to fabricate the sodium percarbonate-MnO₂ effervescent tablets which show bubbling reaction to release oxygen and free radicals when being dispersed in water for membrane cleaning. Due to the synergistic effect of MnO₂ and sodium percarbonate, the tablets are highly effective to clean the membrane fouled by humic acid within 5 min, with the terminal membrane flux being recovered from 0.50 to 0.95, and the irreversible fouling resistance being reduced by more than 90%, which is prominently more efficient than the conventional chemical cleaning methods. Moreover, even by consecutive membrane fouling and cleaning for 6 times, the membrane flux and filtration efficiency of the membrane could still be kept almost constant, and the moderateness of this membrane cleaning method was also verified by the systematic microscopic analysis. For mechanism study, results of Electron Spin Resonance (ESR) and quenching experiments indicated that the high-efficiency and robust durability of sodium percarbonate-MnO₂ (SPC-MnO₂) system for membrane cleaning was mainly attributed to the abundantly generated hydroxyl radicals and secondary free radicals (i.e. carbonate radicals). Conclusively, compared with the conventional membrane cleaning method with liquid cleaning reagents, the novel SPC-MnO₂ system with remarkable advantages in terms of convenience and membrane cleaning performance demonstrated high potential for the wide application in practice.

Design and characterization of an in vivo injectable hydrogel with effervescently generated porosity for regenerative medicine applications

Injectable hydrogels that polymerize directly in vivo hold significant promises in clinical settings to support the repair of damaged or failing tissues. Existing systems that allow cellular and tissue ingrowth after injection are limited because of deficient porosity and lack of oxygen and nutrient diffusion inside the hydrogels. Here is reported for the first time an in vivo injectable hydrogel in which the porosity does not pre-exist but is formed concomitantly with its in situ injection by a controlled effervescent reaction. The hydrogel tailorable crosslinking, through the reaction of polyethylene glycol with lysine dendrimers, allows the mixing and injection of precursor solutions from a dual-chamber syringe while entrapping effervescently generated CO₂ bubbles to form highly interconnected porous networks. The resulting structures allow preserving modular mechanical properties (from 12.7 ± 0.9 to 29.9 ± 1.7 kPa) while being cytocompatible and conducive to swift cellular attachment, proliferation, in-depth infiltration and extracellular matrix deposition. Most importantly, the subcutaneously injected porous hydrogels are biocompatible, undergo tissue remodeling and support extensive neovascularisation, which is of significant advantage for the clinical repair of damaged tissues. Thus, the porosity and injectability of the described effervescent hydrogels, together with their biocompatibility and versatility of mechanical properties, open broad perspectives for various regenerative medicine or material applications, since effervescence could be combined with a variety of other systems of swift crosslinking. STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE: A major challenge in hydrogel design is the synthesis of injectable formulations allowing easy handling and dispensing in the site of interest. However, the lack of adequate porosity inside hydrogels prevent cellular entry and, therefore, vascularization and tissue ingrowth, limiting the regenerative potential of a vast majority of injectable hydrogels. We describe here the development of an acellular hydrogel that can be injected directly in situ while allowing the simultaneous formation of porosity. Such hydrogel would facilitate handling through injection while providing a porous structure supporting vascularization and tissue ingrowth.

Digital image colorimetry detection of carbaryl in food samples based on liquid phase microextraction coupled with a microfluidic thread-based analytical device

This research used a digital image colorimetry (DIC) method to detect carbaryl in food samples using effervescence-assisted liquid phase microextraction based on solidification of switchable hydrophilicity solvent combined with a microfluidic thread-based analytical device (EA-LPME-SSHS-μTAD). 1-naphthol, the hydrolysate of carbaryl, was extracted into octanoic acid by the adjustment of pH values of the sample solution and separated through solidification in an ice bath. Then 1-naphthol contained in the extracted solution was coupled with 4-methoxybenzenediazonlum tetrafluoroborate (MBDF) fixed on the μTAD to produce tangerine compounds. The inherent colour variation was captured by a smartphone and processed to calculate the intensity (I). Under the optimal conditions, the limit of quantification was within 0.020-0.027 mg kg^-1. The recovery was varied in the range from 92.3% to 105.9% with a relative standard deviation (RSD) below 5%. The developed method provides an alternative strategy to extract and detect pesticides for food samples.

Experimental Effervescence and Freezing Point Depression Measurements of Nitrogen in Liquid Methane-Ethane Mixtures

NASA is designing an unmanned submarine to explore the depths of the hydrocarbon-rich seas on Saturn's moon Titan. Data from Cassini indicates that the Titan north polar environment sustains stable seas of variable concentrations of ethane, methane, and nitrogen, with a surface temperature near 93 K. The submarine must operate autonomously, study atmosphere/sea exchange, interact with the seabed, hover at the surface or any depth within the sea, and be capable of tolerating variable hydrocarbon compositions. Currently, the main thermal design concern is the effect of effervescence on submarine operation, which affects the ballast system, science instruments, and propellers. Twelve effervescence measurements on various liquid methane-ethane compositions with dissolved gaseous nitrogen are thus presented from 1.5 bar to 4.5 bar at temperatures from 92 K to 96 K to simulate the conditions of the seas. After conducting effervescence measurements, two freezing point depression measurements were conducted. The freezing liquid line was depressed more than 15 K below the triple point temperatures of pure ethane (90.4 K) and pure methane (90.7 K). Experimental effervescence measurements will be used to compare directly with effervescence modeling to determine if changes are required in the design of the thermal management system as well as the propellers.

Monitoring gas-phase CO2 in the headspace of champagne glasses through combined diode laser spectrometry and micro-gas chromatography analysis

During Champagne or sparkling wine tasting, gas-phase CO₂ and volatile organic compounds invade the headspace above glasses, thus progressively modifying the chemical space perceived by the consumer. Gas-phase CO₂ in excess can even cause a very unpleasant tingling sensation perturbing both ortho- and retronasal olfactory perception. Monitoring as accurately as possible the level of gas-phase CO₂ above glasses is therefore a challenge of importance aimed at better understanding the close relationship between the release of CO₂ and a collection of various tasting parameters. Here, the concentration of CO₂ found in the headspace of champagne glasses served under multivariate conditions was accurately monitored, all along the 10 min following pouring, through a new combined approach by a CO₂-Diode Laser Sensor and micro-gas chromatography. Our results show the strong impact of various tasting conditions (volume dispensed, intensity of effervescence, and glass shape) on the release of gas-phase CO₂ above the champagne surface.

Explaining effervescence: Investigating the relationship between shared social identity and positive experience in crowds

We investigated the intensely positive emotional experiences arising from participation in a large-scale collective event. We predicted such experiences arise when those attending a collective event are (1) able to enact their valued collective identity and (2) experience close relations with other participants. In turn, we predicted both of these to be more likely when participants perceived crowd members to share a common collective identity. We investigated these predictions in a survey of pilgrims (N = 416) attending a month-long Hindu pilgrimage festival in north India. We found participants' perceptions of a shared identity amongst crowd members had an indirect effect on their positive experience at the event through (1) increasing participants' sense that they were able to enact their collective identity and (2) increasing the sense of intimacy with other crowd members. We discuss the implications of these data for how crowd emotion should be conceptualised.

Formulation and optimization of orodispersible tablets of flutamide

The present study aimed to formulate orodispersible tablets of flutamide (FTM) to increase its bioavailability. Orodispersible tablets were prepared by direct compression technique using three different approaches namely; super-disintegration, effervescence and sublimation. Different combined approaches were proposed and evaluated to optimize tablet characteristics. Sodium starch glycolate (SSG) was used as the superdisintegrant. The prepared powder mixtures were subjected to both pre and post compression evaluation parameters including; IR spectroscopy, micromeritics properties, tablet hardness, friability, wetting time, disintegration time and in-vitro drug release. IR studies indicated that there was no interaction between the drug and the excipients used except Ludipress. The results of micromeritics studies revealed that all formulations were of acceptable to good flowability. Tablet hardness and friability indicated good mechanical strength. Wetting and dispersion times decreased from 46 to 38 s by increasing the SSG concentration from 3.33 to 6.66% w/w in tablets prepared by superdisintegration method. The F8 formulation which was prepared by combined approaches of effervescence and superdisintegrant addition gave promising results for tablet disintegration and wetting times but failed to give faster dissolution rate. The incorporation of 1:5 solid dispersion of FTM: PEG 6000 instead of the pure drug in the same formulation increased the drug release rate from 73.12 to 96.99% after 15 min. This increase in the dissolution rate may be due to the amorphization of the drug during the solid dispersion preparation. The presence of the amorphous form of the drug was shown in the IR spectra.
