A new hexactinellid-sponge-associated zoantharian (Porifera, Hexasterophora) from the northwestern Pacific Ocean

Symbiotic associations between zoantharians and sponges can be divided into two groups: those that associate with Demospongiae and those that associate with Hexactinellida. Parachurabanashinseimaruae Kise, gen. nov. et sp. nov., a new genus and a new species of Hexactinellida-associated zoantharian from Japanese waters, is described. It is characterized by a combination of the following: i) its host hexactinellid sponge, ii) very flat polyps, iii) cteniform endodermal marginal muscles, and iv) characteristic mutations in three mitochondrial regions (including a unique 26-bp deletion in 16S ribosomal DNA) and three nuclear regions. Parachurabanashinseimaruae Kise, gen. nov. et sp. nov. is the third genus in the family Parazoanthidae that is reported to be associated with Hexasterophora sponges. Although specimens have so far only been collected on Takuyo-Daigo Seamount off Minami-Torishima Island in Japan, unidentified zoantharians of similar description have been reported from the waters around Australia, indicating that the species might be widespread across the Pacific.

Lightweight lattice-based skeleton of the sponge Euplectella aspergillum: On the multifunctional design

The glass sponge, Euplectella aspergillum, possesses a lightweight, silica spicule-based, cylindrical lattice-like skeleton, representing an excellent model system for bioinspired lattices. Previous analysis suggested that the E. aspergillum's skeletal lattice exhibits improved buckling resistance and suppressed vortex shedding. How the sponge's skeletal lattice with diagonally-oriented reinforcing bundle of fused spicules and the ridge system behaves under different loading conditions and achieves dual mechanical and fluidic transport performance requires further investigation. Here, we first quantified the structural descriptors such as length and thickness of the bundles of fused spicules and hole opening diameter of the sponge skeletons with and without the soft tissue covered. Secondly, parametric modeling and simulations of the sponge lattice in comparison with other bioinspired designs under different loading conditions were implemented to obtain the structure-mechanical property relationship. Our results reveal that the double-diagonal reinforcements of the E. aspergillum's lattices show i) tendency to maximize the torsional rigidity in comparison to longitudinal and radial modulus and flexural rigidity, and ii) independency of mechanical properties on the diagonal spacing, leaving freedom to control the hole-opening position for the sponge's fluid transport. Furthermore, our coupled fluid-mechanical simulations suggest that the ridge system spiraling the cylindrical lattice simultaneously improves the radial stiffness and fluid permeability. Finally, we discuss the general mechanical strategies and design flexibility in the sponge's skeletal lattice. Our work provides understanding of the mechanical and functional trade-offs in E. aspergillum's skeletal lattice which may shed light on the design of lightweight tubular lattices.

Structural Analysis of the Minor Cerebrosides from a Glass Sponge Aulosaccus sp

The minor cerebrosides from a Far-Eastern glass sponge Aulosaccus sp. were analyzed as constituents of some multi-component RP-HPLC fractions. The structures of eighteen new and one known cerebrosides were elucidated on the basis of NMR spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, optical rotation data and chemical transformations. These β-D-glucopyranosyl-(1→1)-ceramides contain sphingoid bases N-acylated with straight-chain (2R)-2-hydroxy fatty acids, namely, (2S,3S,4R,11Z)-2-aminoeicos-11-ene-1,3,4-triol, acylated with 15E-22:1, 16Z-21:1, 15Z-21:1, 15Z-20:1, 15E-20:1, 19:0, 18:0 acids, (2S,3S,4R)-2-amino-13-methyltetradecane-1,3,4-triol--with 19Z-26:1, 16Z-23:1, 23:0, 22:0 acids, (2S,3S,4R)-2-amino-14-methylpentadecane-1,3,4-triol--with 16Z-23:1, 16E-23:1, 15Z-22:1, 22:0 acids, (2S,3S,4R)-2-amino-14-methylhexadecane-1,3,4-triol, linked to 16Z-23:1, 15Z-22:1 acids, (2S,3S,4R)-2-amino-9-methylhexadecane-1,3,4-triol--to 16Z-23:1 acid, and (2S,3S,4R)-2-aminohexadecane-1,3,4-triol, attached to 15Z-22:1 acid. The 13-methyl and 9-methyl-branched trihydroxy sphingoid base backbones (C15 and C17, respectively) have not been found previously in sphingolipids. The ceramide parts, containing other backbones, present new variants of N-acylation of the marine sphingoid bases with the 2-hydroxy fatty acids. The combination of the instrumental and chemical methods used in this study improved the efficiency of the structural analysis of such complex cerebroside mixtures that gave more detailed information on glycosphingolipid metabolism of the organism.
