Synthesis of porous hydroxysodalite from aluminosilicate rich clay soils: application towards fluoride and pathogen removal

This article discussed the potential application of hydrothermally synthesized porous hydroxysodalite material synthesized from aluminosilicate clay material as a multifunctional adsorbent for fluoride and pathogen removal from groundwater. The efficiency of the material towards fluoride removal was evaluated using batch experiments while the efficacy against the E. coli strain was evaluated using well-assay diffusion method. The material showed a maximum fluoride adsorption capacity of 6.01 mg/g at initial concentration range of 5 to 100 mg/L when 1 g/100 mL adsorbent dosage was used at initial pH of 6 ± 0.5 after agitation time of 10 min. The adsorption kinetics data fitted better to pseudo first order of reaction kinetics indicating the dominance of physiosorption adsorption mechanism while the adsorption isotherm data showed better fit to both Langmuir and Freundlich adsorption isotherm model confirming monolayer and multilayer adsorption. The material was successfully regenerated and reused for up to eight successive regeneration-reuse cycles. However, its efficiency was inhibited by the presence of Cl^- and CO₃^2-. The material also proven to have antimicrobial activity against E. coli strain. This study concluded that the porous hydroxysodalite material prepared in this study can be used as a multifunctional adsorbent for fluoride and pathogen removal from groundwater.

Management of solid waste after used motor oil recovery via production of zeolite A

The attempt of the current study is to find an eco-friendly method for managing the solid waste deposited in the landfill of used motor oil recovery factories through the fabrication of zeolite-based compounds. This toxic waste is originated from the application of natural bentonite, traditionally used as an effective adsorbent in the recovery process. The black waste was converted to zeolite structures through the fusion technique. Firstly, the collected powder was mixed with sodium hydroxide, and boehmite followed by the thermal treatment at different temperatures, 600-800 °C. Then, the obtained precursors were hydrothermally converted to zeolite A or hydroxysodalite. The effects of processing factors like alkalinity, boehmite, and sodium aluminate ratios (respect to solid waste mass), fusion temperature, and aging time on the structural characteristics, and cation exchange capacity (CEC) were studied in detail. In order to achieve a cation exchange capacity of about 190 mg g^-1, the alkali and boehmite ratios should be adjusted at 2.00 and 0.53, respectively. Based on the morphological observations, the fusion at 800 °C caused the formation of cubic particles with sharp edges. Besides, the hydrosodalite powder with the extended surface area, 77 m² g^-1, could be produced by fixing the boehmite, and sodium aluminate ratios at the levels of 0.13 and 0.40, respectively.

Synthesis of zeolites from residual diatomite using a microwave-assisted hydrothermal method

Population growth directly affects the industrial production sector, as well as the quantities of waste generated in this sector. Diatomite is a typical example of such industrial waste and is used for the filtration of various products. With the aim of increasing its value, the present study employs this residue, following its usage in beer filtration, as a silicon source for the synthesis of zeolites. Two synthetic routes are used, namely, hydrothermal treatment with and without a pre-treatment step in a conventional microwave for 3-24 h. The results of the compositional and morphological characterization show that the use of a few minutes of microwave radiation reduces the process of zeolite synthesis to 15 h compared to the synthesis without pre-treatment, as well as reducing the production costs. The efficiency of microwave radiation is assessed with regards to solubilizing the residue, the possibility of employing a device of conventional use and the possibility of putting to use the diatomite residue, turning it into a versatile material that can be applied in several areas and process, such as industrial catalysts, the adsorption of environmental pollutants (ions and molecules) and water treatment via ion-exchange resins.
