Knowledge and awareness of dental implants among Syrian refugees: a cross sectional study in Zaatari camp

Background

The popularity of implant dentistry is increasing dramatically, but the success of implant treatment depends on a patient’s knowledge and expectations.

Methods

This study aimed to assess dental implant knowledge among refugees as a treatment option (n = 565), using face-to-face interviews. The frequency distribution of the responses in general and according to age, gender and education was calculated.

Results

81.8% of the interviewees had missing teeth, however, only 26.2% replaced them. 16.6% of participants had never/hardly heard about implants. Females who never heard of implants were more than males (P < 0.001). 51.3% of participants described dental implants as a screw, and only 35.4% knew implants were placed in jawbones. 6.2% of respondents reported that implants required more care than a natural teeth, with 47.6% believing that diseases affect implant success. Friends were the main source of information (61.4%). Highly educated participants showed higher knowledge about implants.

Conclusions

The surveyed sample revealed limited knowledge about dental implants with high cost being a major obstacle, warranting more strategies to increase awareness and to make implants more affordable for this population.

[The attitude of patients in geriatric rehabilitation towards nursing homes]

Mit Erreichen des höheren Lebensalters nehmen unterstützende Wohnformen eine immer wichtigere Rolle ein. Eingeschränkte Selbstständigkeit kann dazu führen, dass ein Umzug in ein Pflegeheim unabdingbar ist. Die Einstellung zu Pflegeheimen ist von großer Bedeutung sowohl für die Vorbereitung auf diesen Fall als auch für die psychische Reaktion auf sein Eintreten, wurde allerdings bisher kaum näher beforscht.

Ziel der Arbeit (Fragestellung)

Das Ziel dieser Untersuchung ist herauszufinden, wie Pflegeheime von älteren Menschen je nach ihrem subjektiven Kontrollerleben, ihrem Informationsstand und ihren Erfahrungen bewertet werden.

Material und Methoden

Zu Einstellungen gegenüber Pflegeheimen wurden insgesamt 150 geriatrische Rehabilitationspatienten mit einer ersten Fragebogenversion (n = 64) oder einer revidierten Fassung (n = 86) befragt.

Ergebnisse

Mittels Polaritätsprofil konnte eine eher positive Einstellung zu Pflegeheimen beobachtet werden, jedoch wurden bei freiem Antwortformat überwiegend negative Assoziationen geäußert. Der Großteil der Probanden hat eine ängstliche Haltung zu einem Umzug in ein Pflegeheim. Stärkeres Kontrollerleben, ein besserer Informationsstand und positive Erfahrungen mit Pflegeheimen stehen mit einer positiven Haltung zum Umzug in ein Pflegeheim im Zusammenhang.

Diskussion

Mit Blick auf geäußerte Ängste, einen verbreitet geringen Informationsstand und die starke Abwehrhaltung einiger Befragter gilt es, die Betroffenen proaktiv zu informieren und stärker in die Entscheidungen für eine Wohnoption einzubinden. Neueste Entwicklungen zu aussagekräftigerer Qualitätsdarstellung der Pflegeheime können dabei unterstützen.

Physical activity among cancer survivors-what is their perception and experience?

PURPOSE

Physical activity (PA) plays an important role relating to cancer. The aim of this study was to investigate the attitude to and experience with the subject of PA in cancer in a large group of tumour patients.

METHODS

A standardised questionnaire was carried out and distributed to patients online and in printed form.

RESULTS

Nine hundred five patients answered the questionnaire. Most tumour patients (60%) received information about PA after their cancer therapy. The Internet was often rated to be inadequate as a source of information. One in two tumour patients were recommended PA by a therapist. During the acute phase, the majority (57% of the 776) did not receive a sport-therapeutic exercise programme. Two thirds (68%) of the 898 patients indicated regularly engaging in PA at least 3 or 5 days per week. In most cases (30% of the 787), 2 to 4 h per week were dedicated to PA. In addition to a desire to increase well-being, enjoyment played a large role. Weakness and lack of willpower are among the most common barriers. Most tumour patients confirmed that PA improved their body awareness (58%) or gave them the feeling that they could do something to better cope with the disease (61%) or feel better (68%).

CONCLUSION

On the one hand, the information requirements of tumour patients with respect to PA have not been adequately taken into account by practitioners. On the other hand, there are still subjective inhibitions on the part of the patients, which keep them from engaging in PA.
