Microwave Therapy for Frostbite Management: A Case Series

Microwave body tightening and contouring is a common and efficient cosmetic medical procedure. The current study presents preliminary data about microwave treatment for body contouring where an innovative and unexpected benefit on frostbites was shown. This is a case series on two patients with frostbite treated with microwave therapy. The participants received the treatment for five sessions at 20-day intervals, including the beginning of the study. In addition to being satisfied with the treatment of their skin imperfections, the patients noticed a remarkable and progressive improvement in frostbite on their limbs. Both patients experienced a significant improvement in skin sensation and appearance and no side effects were observed. Our findings confirmed the safety and efficacy of microwave therapy in treating cellulite and skin laxity but rather a positively effect and a significant improvement in the treatment of frostbite as a secondary intention.

Can the use of photobiomodulation for localized fat reduction induce changes in lipid profile? A critical integrative review

The objective of this study is to clarify whether PBM for measures reduction can cause significant changes in the lipid profile. This is an integrative review and only original articles, both in vivo and clinical trials, that were published between 2010 and 2022 were selected. The article references were also analyzed to identify additional studies. A total of 15 articles were critically analyzed. The wavelength used ranged from 532 nm (green) to 956 nm (near infrared), and many authors failed to describe dosimetric parameters properly, as well as other important characteristics for the reproducibility of those found. Although it is not fully clear about the PBM interference level on the lipid profile, in general, there was no significant difference in lipid parameters when PBM was used alone, and when associated with techniques that promote beta-oxidation, there was an improvement in these biochemical variables. PBM use for localized fat reduction do not affect lipid serum levels. Clinical trials using standardized parameters are crucial to obtain more reliable results.

High-power therapeutic ultrasound for treatment of abdominal localized adiposity-double-blind randomized clinical trial

This study aimed to evaluate the effects of high-power therapeutic ultrasound in the treatment of abdominal localized adiposity in an isolated manner, with the use of neutral gel comparing ultrasonic application with 5% lipolytic active caffeine gel (phonophoresis). A total of 90 healthy women aged between 18 and 40 years were randomized and divided into two groups. The volunteers underwent anamnesis evaluation, perimetry, bioimpedance, ultrasound examination, and blood tests (complete lipidogram, creatinine, and vitamin D) before and after the end of the 10-session ultrasound protocol (3 MHz, 2 W/cm², and 30w). Comparisons between groups and pre-post evaluation were performed by a two-way repeated-measures analysis of variance. Values of p < 0.05 indicated statistical significance. The results demonstrated a significant reduction in both groups, for the perimetry (p < 0.001) and measurements of adipose tissue thickness (p < 0.001). The examinations exhibited a significant alteration only of the complete lipidogram, but without significance (p > 0.05). When comparing the groups, no statistically significant difference was identified in any of the analyzed parameters. The high-power ultrasonic therapy is efficient in reducing localized adiposity, regardless of whether it is applied with neutral gel or 5% caffeine gel.

Low-level laser therapy and vibration therapy for the treatment of localized adiposity and fibrous cellulite

Introduction

In recent years, there has been an upsurge in the application of low-level laser therapy in various medical diseases. Additionally, vibration therapy is a new and effective measure to prevent muscular atrophy and osteoporosis, along with some general health-related beneficial effects of exercise on skeletal muscles such as improvement of endothelial function and an increased enzyme capacity of energy metabolism. The aim of this study was to evaluate the application of a 635 nm and 0.040 W exit power per multiple diode laser in combination with vibration therapy for the application of non-invasive reduction of circumference in patients with localized adiposity and cellulite.

Methods

The study enrolled men and women (N = 33) aged 18–64 years with localized adiposity or fibrous cellulite. The evaluation parameters were: photographic evaluation, perimetric evaluation, blood tests, ecographic evaluation, histological evaluation, and subjective and objective tests.

Results

The results produced were statistically analyzed and resulted in a significant reduction of fat thickness when compared to the measurement prior to the treatment (P < 0.0001). Moreover, subjective and objective tests, as well as ecographic and histological evaluations, confirmed the reduction of fat thickness.

Conclusion

In this study we have demonstrated the safety and efficacy of the combination between low-level laser therapy and vibration therapy for the resolution of localized adiposity and fibrous cellulite.
