Comparison of free breathing and respiratory triggered diffusion-weighted imaging sequences for liver imaging

BACKGROUND

Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) has become a useful tool in the detection, characterization, and evaluation of response to treatment of many cancers, including malignant liver lesions. DWI offers higher image contrast between lesions and normal liver tissue than other sequences. DWI images acquired at two or more b-values can be used to derive an apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC). DWI in the body has several technical challenges. This include ghosting artifacts, mis-registration and susceptibility artifacts. New DWI sequences have been developed to overcome some of these challenges. Our goal is to evaluate 3 new DWI sequences for liver imaging.

AIM

To qualitatively and quantitatively compare 3 DWI sequences for liver imaging: free-breathing (FB), simultaneous multislice (SMS), and prospective acquisition correction (PACE).

METHODS

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) was performed in 20 patients in this prospective study. The MR study included 3 separate DWI sequences: FB-DWI, SMS-DWI, and PACE-DWI. The image quality, mean ADC, standard deviations (SD) of ADC, and ADC histogram were compared. Wilcoxon signed-rank tests were used to compare qualitative image quality. A linear mixed model was used to compare the mean ADC and the SDs of the ADC values. All tests were 2-sided and P values of < 0.05 were considered statistically significant.

RESULTS

There were 56 lesions (50 malignant) evaluated in this study. The mean qualitative image quality score of PACE-DWI was 4.48. This was significantly better than that of SMS-DWI (4.22) and FB-DWI (3.15) (P < 0.05). Quantitatively, the mean ADC values from the 3 different sequences did not significantly differ for each liver lesion. FB-DWI had a markedly higher variation in the SD of the ADC values than did SMS-DWI and PACE-DWI. We found statistically significant differences in the SDs of the ADC values for FB-DWI vs PACE-DWI (P < 0.0001) and for FB-DWI vs SMS-DWI (P = 0.03). The SD of the ADC values was not statistically significant for PACE-DWI and SMS-DWI (P = 0.18). The quality of the PACE-DWI ADC histograms were considered better than the SMS-DWI and FB-DWI.

CONCLUSION

Compared to FB-DWI, both PACE-DWI and SMS-DWI provide better image quality and decreased quantitative variability in the measurement of ADC values of liver lesions.

Multi-slice passband bSSFP for human and rodent fMRI at ultra-high field

Balanced steady-state free precession (bSSFP) can be used as an alternative to gradient-echo (GE) EPI for BOLD functional MRI when image distortions and signal drop-outs are severe such as at ultra-high field. However, 3D-bSSFP acquisitions have distinct drawbacks on either human or animal MR systems. On clinical scanners, 3D imaging is suboptimal for localized fMRI applications. It can also display distortions when acceleration methods such as spiral read-outs are used, and, compared to multi-slice acquisitions, suffers from increased sensitivity to motion or physiological noise which further results in blurring. On pre-clinical systems, 3D acquisitions have low temporal resolution due to limited acceleration options, while single slice often results in insufficient coverage. The aim of the present study was to implement a multi-slice bSSFP acquisition with Cartesian read-out to obtain non-distorted BOLD fMRI activation maps in the human and rat brain at ultra-high field. We show that, when using a new pseudo-steady-state, the bSSFP signal characteristics are preserved. In the human brain at 7 T, we demonstrate that both task- and resting-state fMRI can be performed with multi-slice bSSFP, with a temporal SNR that matches that of 3D-bSSFP, resulting in - at least - equal performance. In the rat brain at 14 T, we show that the multi-slice bSSFP protocol has similar sensitivity to gradient-echo EPI for task fMRI, while benefitting from much reduced distortions and drop-outs. The advantages of passband bSSFP at 14 T in comparison with GE-EPI are expected to be even more marked for mouse brain.

Ultrafast multi-slice chemical exchange saturation transfer imaging scheme based on segmented spatiotemporal encoding

Chemical exchange saturation transfer (CEST) imaging is an important magnetic resonance molecular imaging technology. However, long acquisition time limits its clinical application, especially when multi-slice CEST imaging is needed. Though single-shot EPI can be used to accelerate CEST imaging, images are often distorted under inhomogeneous magnetic fields. In this work, we propose a new method called CEST-SeSPEN for ultrafast multi-slice CEST imaging based on segmented spatiotemporally encoded (SeSPEN) MRI. Experiments were performed on creatine phantom and hen egg. The results show that CEST-SeSPEN can provide good CEST contrast images. Its acquisition time is much shorter than other multi-slice CEST methods currently available. It may be used in challenging situation where high temporal resolution and robustness to field inhomogeneity are vital.

Comparison of the rebuilding effects of different computed tomography scanners and reconstructive settings for the five-line sign in normal interlobular fissures

Background

Based on the images generated from two multi-slice computed tomography (CT) scanners, we intended to compare the five-line sign of normal interlobular fissures produced on axial or oblique maximum intensity projection (MIP) reconstructions using different algorithms.

Methods

Two groups of 50 subjects underwent either 16-slice or 256-slice spiral unenhanced chest CT. None of them in either group displayed any abnormality. For each case, maximum intensity projection (MIP) data were used to calculate the axial or oblique projection using four algorithms: standard axial, standard oblique, high-resolution axial, and high-resolution oblique algorithm. The results were then used to reconstruct images of six locations of the lung. The clarity of the five-line sign of the reconstructed MIPs for the interlobular fissures was determined and graded as 1 (unclear), 2 (barely clear), or 3 (clear). Comparisons of the rate and the degree of clarity were performed using non-parametric tests.

Results

Data from both the 16-slice and 256-slice CT revealed that the standard oblique algorithm was the best among the four methods for presenting clear images of the five-line sign (p < 0.001), whereas the high-resolution axial algorithm was the worst. In addition, the two CT units exhibited no significant differences in the clarity of the five-line sign (p = 0.273).

Conclusions

The standard oblique algorithm was the best approach to reveal the five-line sign of normal lung fissures. Both 16-slice and 256-slice CT were effective for reconstructing the sign.

Benchmark test of accelerated multi-slice simulation by GPGPU

A fast multi-slice image simulation by parallelized computation using a graphics processing unit (GPU) has been developed.　The image simulation contains multiple sets of computing steps, such as Fourier transform and pixel-to-pixel operation. The efficiency of GPU varies depending on the type of calculation. In the effective case of utilizing GPU, the calculation speed is conducted hundreds of times faster than a central processing unit (CPU). The benchmark test of parallelized multi-slice was performed, and the results of contents, such as TEM imaging, STEM imaging and CBD calculation are reported. Some features of the simulation software are also introduced.
