Aerofloral studies and allergenicity of dominant pollen types in Taraba and Bauchi States of Northeastern Nigeria

Pollen and spores have been identified as major airborne bio-particles inducing respiratory disorders including allergic rhinitis and atopic dermatitis among hypersensitive individuals. The present study was conducted with a view to investigating monthly depositional rate of atmospheric palynomorphs to determine the influence of the immediate vegetation on airborne pollen distribution; allergenic activities of dominant atmospheric pollen types at selected study locations in Taraba and Bauchi States, Northeastern Nigeria. Bioaerosols were collected using Tauber-like pollen traps and subjected to standard palynological treatment procedures, microscopy and photomicrography. Plant enumeration within the surrounding vegetation revealed that some airborne pollen types were produced by local plants at the study locations. Spores of Nephrolepis sp., Pteris sp. and a trilete fern, as well as diatoms were also recovered. Crude protein contents of some dominant pollen types; Borreria verticillata (L.) G.F.W. Meyer and Panicum maximum Jacq. for Taraba State; Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit. and Terminalia catappa L. for Bauchi State, were quantified and extracted to sensitize Mus musculus mice for serology (ELISA) and haematology (differential and total white blood cell counts). Statistical significance was tested and recorded in the correlation between levels of serological and haematological parameters elicited by each test group; differences between levels of these parameters elicited by each test group and those of the control, as well as at varying sensitization periods. In the Leucaena leucocephala test group, swollen body and histopathological morbid features showing more extensive areas of inflammatory cells and alveoli filled with fluid in the lungs, were recorded in two dead M. musculus, respectively. The study revealed that all the tested pollen types are possible allergens at the study locations, establishing a complexity of interaction among allergy mediators at varied periods of mice sensitization and forming a paradigm of human immune response to the different pollen allergens.

A Paris System-Based Implant Approach to Hyperthermia Cancer Tumor with Gold Seeds and Ultrasound

A Paris system-based implant approach has been used to improve the bio-heat distribution from implanted gold rods in insonated tissues. Experiments with single-plane implants using parallel equidistant 1.018 ± 0.015 cm height and 0.136 ± 0.001 cm diameter 24-K gold rods) arranged in triangular and square shapes were performed in Mus musculus white mice (medial dorsal region). The mice were anesthetized and gold rods were implanted by means of a trocar needle and the implanted region was insonated with a 4-cm diameter transducer oscillating with a nominal frequency of 1 MHz and power of about 75 W. Intramuscular tissue temperature measurements were recorded using implantable needle type thermocouples affixed to a portable Fluke thermometer. Superficial tissue temperature profile was also measured with a FLIR infrared camera and thermographic analysis was performed using the ImageJ computer software. In both cases, the central implant planes have been assigned to that approximately bisects all the implanted rods. Measured with the needle type thermistor, for the triangular implant, the percentage deviation between the maximum and minimum temperature within the triangular plane was 5%. For a square shape, this percentage deviation was 6%. The thermographic analysis have shown a deviation of 3 and 5% for the triangular and square shapes, respectively. The Paris system-based implant approach for gold rods implanted in tissue and exposed to ultrasound may greatly improve the bio-heat propagation and sustain a constant temperature profile inside triangular and square patterns formed by gold rods implants. Additionally, the Paris system may minimize ablations areas and treatment length in hyperthermia if used in cancer tumor treatment with gold seeds and ultrasound.

Peromyscus leucopus mice: a potential animal model for haematological studies

Peromyscus leucopus mice share physical similarities with laboratory mice Mus musculus (MM) but have higher agility and longer lifespan. We compared domesticated P. leucopus linville (PLL) and M. musculus C57BL/6 (MMB6) mice for cellular composition of peripheral blood (PB), bone marrow (BM) and spleen. PLL mice had significantly fewer platelets and significantly more monocytes in the blood, and notably fewer megakaryocytes in the BM. Spleens of PLL mice were significantly smaller, with 50% fewer cells and reduced 'red pulp'. There was no obvious haematological change in PLL mice between 2-8 and 16-26 months of age, except for a significant increase in blood monocytes. Cellular reactive oxygen species (ROS) content showed no change with age but differed significantly between different cell types. Treating two to eight month-old PLL mice with antioxidant N-acetylcysteine in drinking water for three months did not affect cellular ROS content, but increased blood leucocytes especially the concentration of monocytes. The low platelets, low megakaryocytes, high monocytes and low splenic erythropoiesis in PLL mice resemble human measurements better than the values seen in MMB6.
