Abstract
PURPOSE New emphasis on the assessment of health professions educators' teaching competence has led to greater use of the Objective Structured Teaching Encounter (OSTE). The purpose of this study is to review and further describe the current uses and learning outcomes of the OSTE in health professions education. MATERIALS AND METHODS PubMed, MEDLINE, and CINAHL (March 2010 to February 2022) were searched for English-language studies describing the use of an OSTE for any educational purpose within health professions education. RESULTS Of the 29 articles that met inclusion criteria, over half of the studies (17 of 29, 58.6%) were published during or after 2017. Seven studies described OSTE use outside of the traditional medical education context. These new contexts included basic sciences, dental, pharmacy, and Health Professions Education program graduates. Eleven articles described novel OSTE content, which included leadership skills, emotional intelligence, medical ethics, inter-professional conduct, and a procedural OSTE. There is increasing evidence supporting the use of OSTEs for the assessment of clinical educators' teaching skills. CONCLUSIONS The OSTE is a valuable tool for the improvement and assessment of teaching within a variety of health professions education contexts. Further study is required to determine the impact of OSTEs on teaching behaviors in real-life contexts.

Abstract
Background We designed this open-pilot study to investigate the efficacy and feasibility of incorporating the Interpersonal Effectiveness skills from Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT-IE) into a 3-h clinical communication workshop for registered nurses. Method A convenience sample of registered nurses were invited. The Professional Fulfillment Index, Perceived Stress Scale, Empathy Index, the Interpersonal Reactivity Index, and measures regarding quality of life, anxiety, depression, and insomnia were completed. A subgroup of participants received the Objective Structured Teaching Examinations (OSTE). Pre- and post-workshop assessments were conducted to identify the most empathetic or validated responses from case scenarios and to assess the self-rated levels of confidence regarding the capability to select the best answer. The satisfaction of the participants with respect to the workshop content, process, and the lecturer were also collected. Paired t-test was used for statistical analysis. Results Among the 164 participants of the clinical communication workshop, 72 consented and their pre- and post-results were analyzed. Post-workshop assessment revealed significant improvement in professional fulfillment (p = 0.014), interpersonal coping ability (p = 0.038), and decrease in dysfunctional coping style (p < 0.001). The overall satisfaction score of participants was 4.68 (5-point Likert scale). In the subgroup that underwent pre- and post-workshop OSTE (n = 28), there was a significant improvement in total scores, pass rates, ratings from observational supervisors, simulated students, and simulated patients after the workshop (p < 0.001). Conclusion Our results demonstrated the effectiveness, acceptance, and feasibility of incorporating the DBT-IE skills into a clinical medical communication workshop through a teaching style comprising of rigorous interactions and hands-on practices.

Abstract
Extracellular vesicles are small membrane-bound structures that are released by cells and play important roles in intercellular communication garnering significant attention in scientific society recently due to their potential as diagnostic and therapeutic tools. However, separating EVs from large-volume samples remains a challenge due to their small size and low concentration. In this manuscript, we presented a novel method for separating polystyrene beads as control and extracellular vesicles from large sample volumes using bifurcated asymmetric field flow fractionation in PDMS-free microfluidic devices. Separation characteristics were evaluated using the control system of polystyrene bead mix, which offers up to 3.7X enrichment of EV-sized beads. Furthermore, in the EV-sample from bioreactor culture media, we observed a notable population distribution shift of extracellular vesicles. Herein presented novel PDMS-free microfluidic device fabrication protocol resulted in devices with reduced EV-loss compared to size-exclusion columns. This method represented an improvement over the current state of the art in terms of EV separation from large sample volumes through the use of novel field flow fractionation design.

Abstract
Microneedles have been used in various applications in biomedical engineering, including drug delivery, biosensing, and vaccine delivery. In this study, we develop a novel protocol to fabricate silk fibroin/off-stoichiometry thiol-ene (OSTE) hybrid microneedle array patches. Silk fibroin, as a natural biomaterial, has been proven to be suitable as a drug carrier. Firstly, drug (we use insulin in this experiment) dissolved in silk fibroin solution is deposited on a microneedle mold and dried thoroughly. After that, silk fibroin needle tips are formed on the OSTE base by replica molding. We investigated the influence of the silk fibroin concentration on the length of silk needle tips and found that the silk concentration had a small influence on the tip length. We also tested the mechanical strength of the microneedles by inserting them into gelatin gel for dummy drug delivery tests. Such composite structures have the potential to increase the delivery efficiency by delivering the whole silk tip into the dermis.

Abstract
Plasma separation is of high interest for lateral flow tests using whole blood as sample liquids. Here, we built a passive microfluidic device for plasma separation with high performance. This device was made by blood filtration membrane and off-stoichiometry thiol-ene (OSTE) pillar forest. OSTE pillar forest was fabricated by double replica moldings of a laser-cut polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) mold, which has a uniform microstructure. This device utilized a filtration membrane to separate plasma from whole blood samples and used hydrophilic OSTE pillar forest as the capillary pump to propel the plasma. The device can be used to separate blood plasma with high purity for later use in lateral flow tests. The device can process 45 μL of whole blood in 72 s and achieves a plasma separation yield as high as 60.0%. The protein recovery rate of separated plasma is 85.5%, which is on par with state-of-the-art technologies. This device can be further developed into lateral flow tests for biomarker detection in whole blood.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Many programs designed to improve feedback to students focus on faculty's ability to provide a safe learning environment, and specific, actionable suggestions for improvement. Little attention has been paid to improving students' attitudes and skills in accepting and responding to feedback effectively. Effective "real-time" feedback in the clinical setting is dependent on both the skill of the teacher and the learner's ability to receive the feedback. Medical students entering their clinical clerkships are not formally trained in receiving feedback, despite the significant amount of feedback received during this time. METHODS We developed and implemented a one-hour workshop to teach medical students strategies for effectively receiving and responding to "real-time" (formative) feedback in the clinical environment. Subjective confidence and skill in receiving real-time feedback were assessed in pre- and post-workshop surveys. Objective performance of receiving feedback was evaluated before and after the workshop using a simulated feedback encounter designed to re-create common clinical and cognitive pitfalls for medical students, called an objective structured teaching exercise (OSTE). RESULTS After a single workshop, students self-reported increased confidence (mean 6.0 to 7.4 out of 10, P<0.01) and skill (mean 6.0 to 7.0 out of 10, P=0.10). Compared to pre-workshop OSTE scores, post-workshop OSTE scores objectively measuring skill in receiving feedback were also significantly higher (mean 28.8 to 34.5 out of 40, P=0.0131). CONCLUSION A one-hour workshop dedicated to strategies in receiving real-time feedback may improve effective feedback reception as well as self-perceived skill and confidence in receiving feedback. Providing strategies to trainees to improve their ability to effectively receive feedback may be a high-yield approach to both strengthen the power of feedback in the clinical environment and enrich the clinical experience of the medical student.

Abstract
In many biochip applications, it is advantageous to be able to immobilize biomolecules at specific locations on the surface of solid supports. In this protocol, we describe a photochemical surface patterning procedure based on thiol-ene/yne photochemistry which allows for the simple and rapid selective patterning of biomolecules on thiol-ene solid supports. We describe the preparation of solid supports which are required for the immobilization, including porous monoliths, as well as two different immobilization schemes based on biotin-streptavidin interactions and covalent linkage via free amino groups respectively.

Abstract
PROBLEM Faculty coaching is recognized as an essential element for effective use of portfolios in undergraduate medical education, yet best practices for training these coaches are uncertain. INTERVENTION New portfolio coaches participated in a multifaceted training program that included orienting modules, a 7.5-hr training workshop featuring analysis of reflective writing, an Observed Structured Teaching Exercise (OSTE), and subsequent longitudinal coaches' meetings for timely task training. Four desired coaching skills were emphasized in the initial training: creating a safe environment, explicitly using performance data, asking questions that elicit reflection, and guiding the student to develop future goals and plans. We collected and analyzed several outcomes: (a) coaches' self-assessment at key intervals, (b) open-ended written responses to three coaching vignettes, (c) video recordings of the OSTE, and (d) subsequent student evaluation of the coach. In an attempt to capture learning from the workshop, both the responses to written vignettes and the video-recorded encounters were coded for presence or absence of the four desired skills. CONTEXT Our portfolio and coaching program was instituted as part of a major undergraduate medical education reform. A new cohort of 25 coaches is enrolled with each matriculating student class, and each coach is assigned to work individually with 8-10 students, forming a coaching relationship that continues over 4 years. Coaches are compensated at 5% full-time equivalent. OUTCOME On coach self-assessment, the majority of coaches reported significant improvement in their perceived ability to assess a student's level of reflection, enhance reflection, use performance data, and guide a student to develop goals and plans. After two semesters, coach perception of improved abilities persisted. Students rated coaches as excellent (82%), reporting that coaches created safe environments (99%), promoted insight (92%), and aided in goal setting (97%). Written responses to vignettes before the OSTE found that several coaches omitted desired behaviors; however, posttraining responses showed no discernable pattern of learning. Coding of the OSTE, in contrast, documented that all coaches demonstrated all four of the desired skills. LESSONS LEARNED Although coaches reported learning related to key skills, learning was not apparent when responses to written vignettes were examined. In contrast, skills were demonstrated in the OSTE, perhaps due to the added structured tasks as well as anticipation of feedback. In conclusion, this portfolio coach training program achieved its desired aim of providing students with portfolio coaches who demonstrated the desired skills, as reported by both coaches and students.
