X-ray dose profiles using artificial neural networks

This paper introduces a novel computational method to simulate and predict radiation dose profiles in a water phantom irradiated by X-rays of 6 and 15 MV at different depths and field sizes using Artificial Neural Networks within the error margin required by the code of practice 398 of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA). Our method uses deep-learning Artificial Neural Networks as an alternative to the Monte Carlo methods usually used nowadays. It reproduces the radiation dose profiles for X-rays of 6 and 15 MV data reported in the British Journal of Radiology (Aird, 1996). Even more, our method reproduces data from other sources with acceptable errors. These simulations pave the way to enhance radiotherapy techniques in planning patient doses and calibrating ionizing radiation measurement instruments used in the fight against cancer.

Experimental determination of the effective point of measurement for cylindrical ionization chambers in megavoltage photon beams

Current dosimetry protocols specify an effective point of measurement (EPOM) shift of 0.6r for a cylindrical ionization chamber in photon beams. However, prior studies have reported that this shift was excessively large. The objective of this study was to experimentally evaluate the EPOM shifts in photon beams for cylindrical ionization chambers, which are widely used in clinical practice, and thus determine the appropriate EPOM shift. A microdiamond detector, which is a semiconductor detector with a small sensitive volume, was used as a reference detector, and the EPOM shifts of 11 types of cylindrical ionization chambers were evaluated at 6 MV and 10 MV. The depth shift from the percent depth dose (PDD) of the reference detector to that of the evaluated chamber was calculated using the least-squares method and was defined as the EPOM shift. The EPOM shift of the 10 MV condition was slightly larger than that of the 6 MV condition. However, because this trend was not observed for all chambers, the results of the two energies were averaged, and the EPOM shifts were determined to be 0.33r-0.43r (± 0.05) for 10 types of ionization chambers, and 0.03r (± 0.03) for the A1SL chamber. The shifts for all ionization chambers were smaller than 0.6r, indicating that the recommended EPOM shifts were overestimated and the absorbed dose was underestimated at the calibration depth. Hence, the appropriate EPOM shift of the 10 types of ionization chambers was 0.4r (the geometric center of the A1SL chamber), with a dose uncertainty of 0.05%.

DNA dosimeter measurements of beam profile using a novel simultaneous processing technique

A DNA dosimeter (DNAd) was previously developed that uses double-strand breaks (DSB) to measure dose. This dosimeter has been tested to measure dose in scenarios where transient-charged particle equilibrium (TCPE) has been established. The probability of double strand break (PDSB_o), which is the ratio of broken double-stranded DNA (dsDNA) to the initial unbroken dsDNA in the dosimeter, was used to quantify DSBs and related to dose. The goal of this work is to produce a new technique to process and analyze the DNAd and quantify DNA-DSBs. This technique included simultaneously processing multiple DNAds and also establishing a new form to the probability of double strand break (PDSB_n), which was then used to test the DNAd in a non-TCPE condition by taking beam penumbra measurements. The technique utilized a 384-well plate, and the measurements were made at the edge of a 10 × 10 cm field and compared to film measurements. During these penumbra measurements, while observing the positional differences in the higher gradient region at 4.1 and 4.55 cm from the center of the radiation field, the distance to agreement of PDSB_o to film were 0.38 cm and 0.26 cm while the distance to agreement of PDSB_n to film were 0.11 cm and 0.06 cm, respectively. Finally, the developed new separation technique reduced the time needed for the analysis of 25 samples from 200 min to 30 min.
