Effects of nitrogen reduction combined with organic fertilizer on growth and nitrogen fate in banana at seedling stage

Nitrogen reduction combined with organic fertilizer is of considerable significance for the sustainable development of agriculture. A pot experiment using nitrogen reduction combined with organic fertilizer was conducted to explore the effects of different treatments on matter accumulation, physiological resistance, and fertilizer nitrogen fate in banana seedlings. Compared with conventional fertilization, a 20% reduction of nitrogen did not affect the dry weight, chlorophyll content, physiological resistance, and fertilizer utilization rate of banana seedlings, but significantly reduced the nitrogen leaching loss and increased the nitrogen soil residue. Compared with conventional fertilization, organic nitrogen substituting 20% or 30% of the nitrogen reduced by 20% significantly promoted dry matter accumulation and physiological resistance. Organic nitrogen substituting 30% of the 20% reduction of nitrogen increased the dry matter of the whole plant by 24.94%, the nitrogen uptake in the root by 30.87%, the chlorophyll content by 6.05%, the soluble sugar content by 16.88%, Peroxidase (POD) activity by 26.35%, Catalase (CAT) activity by 27.48%, and Super Oxide Dismutase (SOD) activity by 22.97%. Compared with conventional fertilization, all organic substitution treatments significantly reduced fertilizer nitrogen leaching loss, apparent loss, and increased nitrogen soil residue. Compared with the 20% reduction of nitrogen, organic nitrogen substituting 30% of the 20% reduction of nitrogen significantly increased nitrogen utilization by 16.34% and soil residue rate by 13.26%, and reduced nitrogen leaching loss by 35.46%. The results of the present study revealed that a 20% reduction of nitrogen fertilizer with a 30% organic substitution application promoted matter accumulation, enhanced the physiological resistance of banana seedlings, increased the utilization and residue of nitrogen fertilizer, and reduced nitrogen pollution.

Modeling and dynamics of physiological and behavioral resistance of Asian citrus psyllid

The Asian citrus psyllid (ACP) survival in the presence of contact insecticides may be through physiological adaptations or by behaviorally avoiding. Curiously, although the first alternative is the object of frequent attention, the second was often neglected, but both may lead to insecticide resistance. In this paper, we characterize the growth dynamics of ACP population using a novel impulsive differential equation model to account for the effect of physiological and behavioral resistance, and investigate the threshold conditions for the extinction of ACP population. Furthermore, we discuss the optimal switching methods for insecticides based on two different criteria. Our numerical result suggests that ignoring both resistances or behavioral resistance would underestimate the transmission risk of Huanglongbing, whereas only considering behavioral resistance leads to an overestimation.

Drifting away. Seawater survival and stochastic transport of the invasive Carpobrotus edulis

Coastal areas are vulnerable and fluctuating habitats that include highly valuable spaces for habitat and species conservation and, at the same time, they are among the most invaded ecosystems worldwide. Occupying large areas within Mediterranean-climate coastlines, the "ecosystem engineer" Carpobrotus edulis appears as a menace for coastal biodiversity and ecosystem services. By combining the observation, current distribution, glasshouse experiment, and dispersion modeling, we aim to achieve a better understanding of the successful invasion process and potential dispersion patterns of C. edulis. We analyzed the response of plant propagules (seeds and plant fragments) to seawater immersion during increasing periods of time (up to 144 h). After 2 months of growth, plant fragments showed a total survival rate (100%) indicating high tolerance to salinity. During this time, fragment length was increased (up to 60%) and root length was higher than control in all cases. Also, immersed fragments consistently accumulated more biomass than control fragments. After two months of growth, photosynthetic parameters (F_v'/F_m', Φ_NO, and Φ_II) remained stable compared to control fragments. Physiologically, osmolyte and pigment content did not evidence significant changes regardless of immersion time. Based on the capacity of propagules to survive seawater immersion, we modeled the potential transport of C. edulis by combining an oceanic model (ROMS-AGRIF) with a particle-tracking model. Results indicated that propagules may travel variable distances maintaining physiological viability. Our model suggested that short-scale circulation would be the dominant process, however, long-scale circulation of propagules may be successfully accomplished in <6 days. Furthermore, under optimal conditions (southerly winds dominance), propagules may even travel large distances (250 km alongshore). Modeling transport processes, in combination with the dynamics of introduction and expansion, will contribute to a better understanding of the invasive mechanisms of C. edulis and, consequently, to design preventive strategies to reduce the impact of plant invasion.
