A new, disjunct species of Bahiana (Euphorbiaceae, Acalyphoideae): Phytogeographic connections between the seasonally dry tropical forests of Peru and Brazil, and a review of spinescence in the family

Bahiana is expanded from 1 to 2 species with the description of B.occidentalis K. Wurdack, sp. nov. as a new endemic of the seasonally dry tropical forests (SDTFs) of Peru. The disjunct distribution of Bahiana with populations of B.occidentalis on opposite sides of the Andes in northwestern Peru (Tumbes, San Martín) and B.pyriformis in eastern Brazil (Bahia) adds to the phytogeographic links among the widely scattered New World SDTFs. Although B.occidentalis remains imperfectly known due to the lack of flowering collections, molecular phylogenetic results from four loci (plastid matK, rbcL, and trnL-F; and nuclear ITS) unite the two species as does gross vegetative morphology, notably their spinose stipules, and androecial structure. Spinescence in Euphorbiaceae was surveyed and found on vegetative organs in 25 genera, which mostly have modified sharp branch tips. Among New World taxa, spines that originate from stipule modifications only occur in Bahiana and Acidocroton, while the intrastipular spines of Philyra are of uncertain homologies.

Regulation of Microglia for the Treatment of Glioma

Microglia are the resident macrophages of the central nervous system (CNS). They are derived from the erythromyeloid progenitors in the embryonic yolk sac, and they are maintained postnatally by limited self-renewal and longevity. As the most abundant immune cells in the CNS, they play critical roles in homeostasis and various CNS pathologies, including tumor, stroke, and neurodegenerative disease. For instance, in gliomas, up to more than 30% of cells in the tumor microenvironment can be microglia and tumor-associated macrophages. These cells are typically coopted by tumor cells to create a pro-tumorigenic microenvironment. The transcriptional regulation of the development and function of microglia in health and disease is not well understood. Transcription factors are master regulators of cell fates and functions and activate target genes that execute a genetic program typically initiated by external stimuli. Several transcription factors, not necessarily specific to microglia, have been shown to play roles in the development, function, and activation state of microglia. In this review, we summarize our current understanding of the roles of transcription factors in the functions of microglia in normal CNS homeostasis and in gliomas. A thorough understanding of the transcription factors and their target genes that mediate and regulate the functions of microglia in gliomas may help identify new targets for immune therapies. These stroma-directed therapies may be combined with tumor cell-directed therapies for more effective treatment of these diseases.

Divergent responses of plant reproductive strategies to chronic anthropogenic disturbance and aridity in the Caatinga dry forest

Anthropogenic disturbance and climate change are major threats to biodiversity persistence and functioning of many tropical ecosystems. Although increases in the intensity of anthropogenic disturbance and climate change are associated with reduced taxonomic, phylogenetic and functional diversities of several organisms, little is known about how such pressures interfere with the distribution of plant reproductive traits in seasonally dry tropical forests. Here we test the hypothesis that individual and combined effects of increasing chronic anthropogenic disturbance and water deficit negatively affect the richness, abundance and diversity of specialized reproductive strategies of native woody plants in the Caatinga dry forest. This study was carried out at the Catimbau National Park, northeastern Brazil (62,294 ha). Chronic anthropogenic disturbance intensity was measured through different sources of disturbance (cattle/goat herbivory, wood extraction, and other people pressures). Water deficit data was obtained from hydrological maps and used as a proxy of aridity. We constructed generalized linear models and selected best-supported models for richness, abundance and functional diversity of reproductive traits. We documented that richness and abundance of plants with certain reproductive traits, regardless the specialization, can increase (in 18 out of the 49 trait categories analyzed; e.g. obligatory cross-pollination in response to increases in aridity and wood extraction), be impaired (in 20 categories; e.g. pollination by Sphingids/beetles with increase in aridity), or remain unchanged (in 21 categories; e.g. pollination by vertebrates with increases in chronic anthropogenic disturbance and aridity) with higher disturbance and aridity. There were combined effects of chronic anthropogenic disturbance and aridity on the richness of plants in nine traits (e.g. pollen flowers; dioecious and self-incompatible plants). Aridity affected 40% of the reproductive traits, while chronic anthropogenic disturbance affected 35.5%. The functional diversity of reproductive traits was affected only by disturbance. Changes in plant community structure promoted by chronic anthropogenic disturbance and aridity will likely threaten plant-animal interactions, thereby compromising the functioning of communities and the persistence of biodiversity in the Caatinga.
