The Self-Narrative Role in the Diagnosis of Motivation to Achieve Personal Success

This study aims to investigate the efficacy of self-narrative as a tool for identifying personality traits conducive to motivation for success. The research employs several methodologies, including the "Readiness for Self-Development" test by V.L. Pavlov, the Achievement Motivation Diagnosis test, and the katathym imaginative psychotherapy motive "Mountain" as a form of self-narrative. Psycholinguistic analysis tools such as the verbosity coefficient, embolism coefficient, and correlation coefficient are utilized. Through empirical analysis of self-narratives, criteria for evaluating motivational potential are established. Quantitative and qualitative analyses of respondent narratives reveal distinct patterns. Coefficients derived from psycholinguistic analysis indicate a correlation between self-narratives and motivation for achievement. Respondents demonstrating motivation for success and readiness for self-development exhibit lower verbosity and embolism coefficients. Conversely, those with a tendency to avoid failure and low readiness for self-development tend to employ narratives rich in superficial language elements. The findings suggest that self-narrative analysis can effectively gauge an individual's motivational tendencies and readiness for personal development. This method holds promise as a tool for identifying and nurturing talent within organizations, particularly in the context of forming a vertical personnel reserve. By understanding the motivational drivers revealed through self-narratives, organizations can better tailor their approaches to talent management and development.

Unpacking the p-factor. Associations Between Maladaptive Personality Traits and General Psychopathology in Female and Male Adolescents

Adolescence is a period of rapid physical, psychological, and neural maturation that makes youth vulnerable to emerging psychopathology, highlighting the need for improved identification of psychopathology risk indicators. Recently, a higher-order latent psychopathology factor (p-factor) was identified that explains latent liability for psychopathology beyond internalizing and externalizing difficulties. However, recent proposals suggest reconceptualizing the p-factor model in terms of impairments in personality encompassing difficulties in both self-regulation (borderline features) and self-esteem (narcissistic features), but this remains untested. To address this, this study examined the p-factor structure and the contribution of borderline and narcissistic features using two cross-sectional data collections. In Study 1, 974 cisgender adolescents (63% assigned females at birth; age range: 13-19; Mage = 16.68, SD = 1.40) reported on internalizing and externalizing problems (YSR) to test via structural equation models (SEM) different theoretical models for adolescent psychopathology. In Study 2, 725 cisgender adolescents (64.5% assigned females at birth; age range: 13-19; Mage = 16.22, SD = 1.32) reported internalizing and externalizing problems (YSR), borderline personality features (BPFSC-11), and narcissistic personality traits (PNI), to explore, via SEM, the contribution of borderline and narcissistic traits to the p-factor and accounting for gender differences. Results confirmed the utility of a bi-factor model in adolescence. Furthermore, findings highlighted the contribution of borderline features and narcissistic vulnerability to general psychopathology. The study provides the first evidence supporting a p-factor model reconceptualized in terms of personality impairments encompassing difficulties in self-regulation and self-esteem in adolescents.

A system approach to the self: Interpretive phenomenological analysis

The study aims to determine the life experiences that affect the formation of permanent identity features that form the self during adolescence and to determine the importance of these identity features for adolescents. For this purpose, in-depth interviews were conducted with 8 participants, 4 of whom were women and 4 of whom were men, between the ages of 22-24, to understand the life experiences that affect their self-development during childhood and adolescence. Four of the participants are university students, and 4 of them are high school graduates. Interviews and analyses were carried out within the Interpretive phenomenological analysis principles framework. According to the results of the analysis obtained from the interviews, it was found that the most influential factor on self-development was family communication orientation in childhood, and the participants who grew up in families with a conversation orientation had more positive emotions during childhood, saw themselves as part of the family more, and established more successful friendships. On the other hand, participants from families with a conformity orientation had more negative feelings in childhood, had a lower sense of belonging to the family, and were found to be less successful in friendships.

An integrative perspective on the role of touch in the development of intersubjectivity

Touch concerns a fundamental component of sociality. In this review, we examine the hypothesis that somatomotor development constitutes a crucial psychophysiological element in the ontogeny of intersubjectivity. An interdisciplinary perspective is provided on how the communication channel of touch contributes to the sense of self and extends to the social self. During gestation, the transformation of random movements into organized sequences of actions with sensory consequences parallels the development of the brain's functional architecture. Brain subsystems shaped by the coordinated activity of somatomotor circuits to support these first body-environment interactions are the first brain functional arrangements to develop. We propose that tactile self-referring behaviour during gestation constitutes a prototypic mode of interpersonal exchange that supports the subsequent development of intersubjective exchange. The reviewed research suggests that touch constitutes a pivotal bodily experience that in early stages builds and later filters self-other interactions. This view is corroborated by the fact that aberrant social-affective touch experiences appear fundamentally associated with attachment anomalies, interpersonal trauma, and personality disorders. Given the centrality of touch for the development of intersubjectivity and for psychopathological conditions in the social domain, dedicated research is urged to elucidate the role of touch in the evolution of subjective self-other coding.

Existential Values and Insights in Western and Eastern Management: Approaches to Managerial Self-Development

Continual pressure on managers, their efficiency, and the need to search for novel solutions to problems can lead to psychologically demanding situations. In efforts to understand the main obstacles to work and to effectively manage work-related processes, and in the need to achieve personal development, new approaches that are based on existential philosophies emerge. The aim of this article is to highlight the ways in which existential approaches have been used or discussed in management and to show that existential themes and their applications in management can also be found in the Eastern tradition of thought. The paper presents six case vignettes from management practice that use Western and Eastern existential insights and offer recommendations for self-development of managers. The paper concludes that although it is difficult or impossible to create a unified framework of existential philosophy of management because of the diversity of existential approaches and because of the problematic nature of comparing Eastern and Western philosophies, it is possible to work towards gathering applicable insights and values.

The Self of Adolescents with Autism Spectrum Disorder or Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder: A Qualitative Study

Self-development is a central developmental issue in adolescence, there are few studies describing the experiences related to the self in adolescents with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). We conducted semi-structural interviews with 14 adolescents with ASD and three with ADHD to describe the self. As a result of inductive continuous comparison analysis, three concepts "Interest in self and self-realization", "Intentionality and self-transformation", "Unrealized/unnoticed self" were generated. It was suggested that the characteristic perceptions may tend to have difficulty realizing subjective selves.Otherwise, most adolescents realized various sense of self through interaction with others. Nurses should know adolescents' inner world and share their emotions related to their self-recognition in order to provide care that meets important youth developmental needs.

Evaluation of a portfolio-based course on self-development for pre-medical students in Korea

PURPOSE

We have developed and operated a portfolio-based course aimed at strengthening pre-medical students' capabilities for self-management and self-improvement. In order to determine the effectiveness of the course and to establish future operational strategies, we evaluated the course and the students' learning experience.

METHODS

The subjects of this study were 97 students of a pre-medical course "Self-development and portfolio I" in 2019. Their learning experience was evaluated through the professor's assessment of portfolios they had submitted, and the program was evaluated based on the responses of 68 students who completed a survey. The survey questionnaire included 32 items. Descriptive statistics were reported for quantitative data, including the mean and standard deviation. Opinions collected from the open-ended question were grouped into categories.

RESULTS

The evaluation of students' portfolios showed that only 6.2% of the students' portfolios were well-organized, with specific goals, strategies, processes, and self-reflections, while most lacked the basic components of a portfolio (46.4%) or contained insufficient content (47.4%). Students' responses to the survey showed that regular portfolio personality assessments (72.1%), team (64.7%), and individual (60.3%) activities were felt to be more appropriate as educational methods for this course, rather than lectures. Turning to the portfolio creation experience, the forms and components of the portfolios (68.2%) and the materials provided (62.2%) were felt to be appropriate. However, students felt that individual autonomy needed to be reflected more (66.7%) and that this course interfered with other studies (42.5%).

CONCLUSION

The findings of this study suggest that standardized samples, guidelines, and sufficient time for autonomous portfolio creation should be provided. In addition, education on portfolio utilization should be conducted in small groups in the future.

Humor doesn't retire: Improvisation as a health-promoting intervention for older adults

As our population ages and aging in place continues to remain a priority of older adults, identifying novel ways to promote the wellbeing of older adults and reduce isolation is of the utmost importance. The Second City is a Chicago-based comedy improvisation organization that provides training in improvisation. One of their training courses, Humor Doesn't Retire, specifically teaches adults 55 and over, on improvisation. This study sought to explore the experiences of older adults enrolled in Humor Doesn't Retire, and to characterize any benefits that older adult participants perceived following participation in the comedy improvisation course. Qualitative analysis was used to identify and describe common themes that emerged in a survey of open-ended questions regarding benefits of the improvisation course on outlook and mood as well as behavior changes. Results for perceived benefits showed main themes of increased positivity, an increased sense of comfort and ease with the unexpected, a sense of self-development and self-awareness, and a feeling of acceptance by their social group. Participants reported that these changes fed into their behaviors, and resulted in enhanced problem solving abilities, greater facility in social situations, and the tangible outcome of an expanded and closer-knit social circle. As the first study in our knowledge to examine the effect of improvisation comedy on healthy older adults, this exploratory analysis has suggested that improvisation comedy may be a mechanism by which to combat several geriatric syndromes, including depression, stress, and isolation - all of which are detrimental to older adults.
