Abstract
Preoperative serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) has been reported to be associated with adverse outcomes following thoracic surgery. However, its association with outcomes in noncardiac surgery as a whole has not been investigated. We conducted a retrospective cohort study at West China Hospital, Sichuan University, from 2018 to 2020, including patients undergoing noncardiac surgery. Multivariable logistic regression and propensity score weighting were employed to assess the link between LDH levels and postoperative outcomes. Preoperative LDH was incorporated into four commonly used clinical models, and its discriminative ability, reclassification, and calibration were evaluated in comparison to models without LDH. Among 130,879 patients, higher preoperative LDH levels (cut-off: 220 U/L) were linked to increased in-hospital mortality (4.382% vs. 0.702%; OR 1.856, 95% CI 1.620-2.127, P < 0.001), myocardial injury after noncardiac surgery (MINS) (3.012% vs. 0.537%; OR 1.911, 95% CI 1.643-2.223, P < 0.001), and ICU admission (15.010% vs. 6.414%; OR 1.765, 95% CI 1.642-1.896, P < 0.001). The inverse probability of treatment-weighted estimation supported these results. Additionally, LDH contributed significantly to four surgical prognostic models, enhancing their predictive capability. Our study revealed a significant association between preoperative LDH and in-hospital mortality, MINS, and ICU admission following noncardiac surgery. Moreover, LDH provided supplementary predictive information, extending the utility of commonly used surgical prognostic scores.

Abstract
PURPOSE Readmission is one of the measures of quality of care and potential costs. This study aimed to determine whether lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) is associated with an increased risk of 30-day readmission in gastric cancer. METHODS We performed a retrospective study of patients who underwent radical gastrectomy for gastric cancer at our institution between July 2014 and May 2018. Balanced cohorts were created by propensity score matching (PSM) with a 1:1 ratio to generate the elevated LDH (ELDH) group (n = 151) and the low LDH group (Control) (n = 302). To determine the incidence, causes, and risk factors of 30-day readmission, subgroup analyzes were performed and used to develop an efficient prediction model. RESULTS A total of 788 patients met the criteria to be included in the study. The cutoff value for serum LDH was 215.5. After PSM, a total of 302 patients were matched in pairs (ELDH group, n = 151, Control group, n = 151). ELDH levels had a higher risk of readmission (p = 0.005, Odds ratio 3.768, 95% confidence interval 1.493-9.510). The pre-match 30-day readmission rate was 7.2 percent, and common causes of post-match readmission included infection-related symptoms, gastrointestinal symptoms, and gastrointestinal bleeding. CONCLUSIONS Patients with preoperative ELDH levels, postoperative complications, and high preoperative American Society of Anesthesiologists Scores had a higher risk of readmission 30 days after surgery.

Abstract
PURPOSE This research aimed to evaluate the prognostic significance of baseline prognostic nutritional index (PNI) and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) for the outcome of individuals diagnosed with non-metastatic nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC). METHODS A retrospective analysis was conducted on data from 810 patients with non-metastatic NPC who underwent intensity-modulated radiation therapy (IMRT) with or without chemotherapy. The best cut-offs for PNI and LDH were identified by X-tile software to be 48.5 and 150, respectively. To find the independent prognostic factors for survival outcomes, univariate and multivariate regression analyses were conducted, and AUCs were used to compare their prognostic values. RESULTS Multivariate analysis revealed that patients with PNI > 48.5 had better overall survival (OS) (HR: 0.502, P < 0.001), progression-free survival (PFS) (HR: 0.618, P < 0.001), and distant metastasis-free survival (DMFS) (HR: 0.637, P = 0.005). Higher LDH was associated with poorer OS (HR: 1.798, P < 0.001), PFS (HR: 1.671, P < 0.001), and DMFS (HR: 1.756, P < 0.001). The combination of low PNI and high LDH in non-metastatic NPC patients was correlated with poor OS (P < 0.001), PFS (P < 0.001), and DMFS (P < 0.001). The combination of PNI and LDH had the highest AUCs for predicting OS, PFS, and DMFS. CONCLUSIONS PNI and LDH might become valuable predictors of the prognosis of non-metastatic NPC patients undergoing IMRT with or without chemotherapy. Prognostic accuracy can be enhanced by combining PNI and LDH.

Abstract
Background Patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and underlying cardiovascular comorbidities have poor prognoses. Our aim was to identify the impact of serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), which is associated with mortality in acute respiratory distress syndrome, on the prognoses of patients with COVID-19 and underlying cardiovascular comorbidities. Methods Among 1518 patients hospitalized with COVID-19 enrolled in the CLAVIS-COVID (Clinical Outcomes of COVID-19 Infection in Hospitalized Patients with Cardiovascular Diseases and/or Risk Factors study), 515 patients with cardiovascular comorbidities were analyzed. Patients were divided into tertiles based on LDH levels at admission [tertile 1 (T1), <235 U/L; tertile 2 (T2), 235–355 U/L; and tertile 3 (T3); ≥356 U/L]. We investigated the impact of LDH levels on the in-hospital mortality. Results The mean age was 70.4 ± 30.0 years, and 65.3% were male. There were significantly more in-hospital deaths in T3 than in T1 and T2 [n = 50 (29.2%) vs. n = 15 (8.7%), and n = 24 (14.0%), respectively; p < 0.001]. Multivariable analysis adjusted for age, comorbidities, vital signs, and laboratory data including D-dimer and high-sensitivity troponin showed T3 was associated with an increased risk of in-hospital mortality (adjusted hazard ratio, 3.04; 95% confidence interval, 1.50–6.13; p = 0.002). Conclusions High serum LDH levels at the time of admission are associated with an increased risk of in-hospital death in patients with COVID-19 and known cardiovascular disease and may aid in triage of these patients.

Abstract
Solid organ cancers infrequently metastasize to bone marrow (BM). BM involvement by cancer in adults leads to poor prognosis and it becomes difficult to provide appropriate treatment. We aimed to study the clinical, pathological and radiological characteristics of adult patients with BM involvement at our institute. Eleven adult patients diagnosed with BM involvement associated with solid organ cancer were included in the study. Clinical, laboratory, radiological and treatment details were analysed. Carcinoma of the breast accounted for majority of the cases. Most of the patients had poor performance status (PS) at diagnosis. Serum lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) was found to be elevated in all cases. Serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP) was elevated in all except 1 case. Median overall survival (OS) was 91 days. BM involvement from solid organ cancer in adults predicts a poor outcome. Serum LDH and serum ALP can serve as a marker of BM involvement.

Abstract
Lactate dehydrogenase B (LDHB) expression and the level of serum LDH were involved in tumor progression. Correlations between these parameters and their prognostic significance were not assessed in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). We evaluated LDHB expression by immunohistochemical method and serum LDH in 243 NSCLC patients treated with surgical resection [136 adenocarcinomas (ADCs), 89 squamous cell carcinomas (SqCCs) and 18 other type carcinomas]. Correlation between LDHB expression and serum LDH was assessed, and the prognostic significance was determined. LDHB expression was identified in 52% of SqCC and 55% of ADC tissue samples. LDHB-positive SqCC patients had a higher recurrence-free survival (RFS) rate than LDHB-negative patients (p=0.017). LDHB-positive and LDHB-negative patients showed similar RFS rates in ADCs (p=0.519). Multivariate analysis showed that LDHB expression was an independent risk factor in lung SqCCs (hazard ratio=0.393, p=0.028). A positive correlation was found between LDHB expression and serum LDH level (p=0.02). High LDHB expression is significantly associated with the level of serum LDH and better clinical outcomes in lung SqCC.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of the study was to find out the role of Serum lactate dehydrogenase in prediction of adverse outcomes of PE & E i.e., severity of disease and occurrence of complications. MATERIALS AND METHODS This study was conducted in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, MGM Medical College, Indore. A total of 200 women were studied; they were divided into control (n = 100), severe pre-eclampsia (n = 32), eclampsia (n = 68). Demographic and hematological parameters were studied including LDH levels. RESULTS The incidence of severe pre-eclampsia-1.2 % & Eclampsia 2.7 %, PE & E patients were significantly younger, with low gravidity and parity. They had significantly increased systolic and diastolic pressure, liver enzymes, uric acid, urine albumin, and LDH levels. Serum urea and creatinine were normal in majority of cases. The symptoms and complications of PE along with perinatal mortality were increased significantly in patients with LDH >800 IU/l compared with those who had lower levels. Complications like Retinopathy, ARF, Abruptio, DIC, CVA, MODS, Shock were also associated with high level of serum LDH >800 IU/L. Low birth weight of babies was also associated with high level of serum LDH levels in PE & E patients. The incidence of poor perinatal outcome was higher in PE & E patients with high serum LDH level (>600 IU/L). CONCLUSION LDH is the earliest marker seen in blood during hypoxia and oxidative stress. It is a useful biochemical marker that reflects the severity of and the occurrence of complications of PE & E; these are preventable if identified at an earlier stage and adequately managed at a higher center. Test is easily available, so screening of all cases of PE & E with LDH levels must be made mandatory.
