Siamese-Based Architecture for Cross-Lingual Plagiarism Detection in English-Hindi Language Pairs

The cross-lingual plagiarism detection (CLPD) is a challenging problem in natural language processing. Cross-lingual plagiarism is when a text is translated from any other language and used as it is without proper acknowledgment. Most of the existing methods provide good results for monolingual plagiarism detection, whereas the performances of existing methods for the CLPD are very limited. The reason for this is that it is difficult to represent the text from two different languages in a common semantic space. In this article, a novel Siamese architecture-based model is proposed to detect the cross-lingual plagiarism in English-Hindi language pairs. The proposed model combines the convolutional neural network (CNN) and bidirectional long short-term memory (Bi-LSTM) network to learn the semantic similarity among the cross-lingual sentences for the English-Hindi language pairs. In the proposed model, the CNN model learns the local context of words, whereas the Bi-LSTM model learns the global context of sentences in forward and backward directions. The performances of the proposed models are evaluated on the benchmark data set, that is, Microsoft paraphrase corpus, which is converted in the English-Hindi language pairs. The proposed model outperforms other models giving 67%, 72%, and 67% weighted average precision, recall, and F1-measure scores. The experimental results show the effectiveness of the proposed models over the baseline models because the proposed model is very efficient in representing the cross-lingual text very efficiently.

MapCell: Learning a Comparative Cell Type Distance Metric With Siamese Neural Nets With Applications Toward Cell-Type Identification Across Experimental Datasets

Large collections of annotated single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) experiments are being generated across different organs, conditions and organisms on different platforms. The diversity, volume and complexity of this aggregated data requires new analysis techniques to extract actionable knowledge. Fundamental to most analysis are key abilities such as: identification of similar cells across different experiments and transferring annotations from an annotated dataset to an unannotated one. There have been many strategies explored in achieving these goals, and they focuses primarily on aligning and re-clustering datasets of interest. In this work, we are interested in exploring the applicability of deep metric learning methods as a form of distance function to capture similarity between cells and facilitate the transfer of cell type annotation for similar cells across different experiments. Toward this aim, we developed MapCell, a few-shot training approach using Siamese Neural Networks (SNNs) to learn a generalizable distance metric that can differentiate between single cell types. Requiring only a small training set, we demonstrated that SNN derived distance metric can perform accurate transfer of annotation across different scRNA-seq platforms, batches, species and also aid in flagging novel cell types.

Similarity-Based Virtual Screen Using Enhanced Siamese Multi-Layer Perceptron

Traditional drug development is a slow and costly process that leads to the production of new drugs. Virtual screening (VS) is a computational procedure that measures the similarity of molecules as one of its primary tasks. Many techniques for capturing the biological similarity between a test compound and a known target ligand have been established in ligand-based virtual screens (LBVSs). However, despite the good performances of the above methods compared to their predecessors, especially when dealing with molecules that have structurally homogenous active elements, they are not satisfied when dealing with molecules that are structurally heterogeneous. The main aim of this study is to improve the performance of similarity searching, especially with molecules that are structurally heterogeneous. The Siamese network will be used due to its capability to deal with complicated data samples in many fields. The Siamese multi-layer perceptron architecture will be enhanced by using two similarity distance layers with one fused layer, then multiple layers will be added after the fusion layer, and then the nodes of the model that contribute less or nothing during inference according to their signal-to-noise ratio values will be pruned. Several benchmark datasets will be used, which are: the MDL Drug Data Report (MDDR-DS1, MDDR-DS2, and MDDR-DS3), the Maximum Unbiased Validation (MUV), and the Directory of Useful Decoys (DUD). The results show the outperformance of the proposed method on standard Tanimoto coefficient (TAN) and other methods. Additionally, it is possible to reduce the number of nodes in the Siamese multilayer perceptron model while still keeping the effectiveness of recall on the same level.

Improved prediction of protein-protein interaction using a hybrid of functional-link Siamese neural network and gradient boosting machines

In this paper, for accurate prediction of protein-protein interaction (PPI), a novel hybrid classifier is developed by combining the functional-link Siamese neural network (FSNN) with the light gradient boosting machine (LGBM) classifier. The hybrid classifier (FSNN-LGBM) uses the fusion of features derived using pseudo amino acid composition and conjoint triad descriptors. The FSNN extracts the high-level abstraction features from the raw features and LGBM performs the PPI prediction task using these abstraction features. On performing 5-fold cross-validation experiments, the proposed hybrid classifier provides average accuracies of 98.70 and 98.38%, respectively, on the intraspecies PPI data sets of Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Helicobacter pylori. Similarly, the average accuracies for the interspecies PPI data sets of the Human-Bacillus and Human-Yersinia data sets are 98.52 and 97.40%, respectively. Compared with the existing methods, the hybrid classifier achieves higher prediction accuracy on the independent test sets and network data sets. The improved prediction performance obtained by the FSNN-LGBM makes it a flexible and effective PPI prediction model.
