Depth effects on bacterial community altitudinal patterns and assembly processes in the warm-temperate montane forests of China

Soil bacterial communities are essential for ecosystem function, yet their response along altitudinal gradients in different soil strata remains unclear. Understanding bacterial community co-occurrence networks and assembly patterns in mountain ecosystems is crucial for comprehending microbial ecosystem functions. We utilized Illumina MiSeq sequencing to study bacterial diversity and assembly patterns of surface and subsurface soils across a range of elevations (700 to 2100 m) on Dongling Mountain. Our results showed significant altitudinal distribution patterns concerning bacterial diversity and structure in the surface soil. The bacterial diversity exhibited a consistent decrease, while specific taxa demonstrated unique patterns along the altitudinal gradient. However, no altitudinal dependence was observed for bacterial diversity and community structure in the subsurface soil. Additionally, a shift in bacterial ecological groups is evident with changing soil depth. Copiotrophic taxa thrive in surface soils characterized by higher carbon and nutrient content, while oligotrophic taxa dominate in subsurface soils with more limited resources. Bacterial community characteristics exhibited strong correlations with soil organic carbon in both soil layers, followed by pH in the surface soil and soil moisture in the subsurface soil. With increasing depth, there is an observable increase in taxa-taxa interaction complexity and network structure within bacterial communities. The surface soil exhibits greater sensitivity to environmental perturbations, leading to increased modularity and an abundance of positive relationships in its community networks compared to the subsurface soil. Furthermore, the bacterial community at different depths was influenced by combining deterministic and stochastic processes, with stochasticity (homogenizing dispersal and undominated) decreasing and determinism (heterogeneous selection) increasing with soil depth.

PFAS release from the subsurface and capillary fringe during managed aquifer recharge

Managed aquifer recharge (MAR) is a sustainable way of harvesting groundwater in water-stressed urbanized areas, where reclaimed wastewater or stormwater is applied on a large basin to infiltrate water into the groundwater aquifer naturally. This process could rapidly fluctuate the water table and move the capillary fringe boundary, and the change in flow dynamic and associated geochemical changes could trigger the release of sequestered pollutants, including per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), also known as 'forever chemicals', from the subsurface and capillary fringe. Yet, the potential of PFAS release from the subsurface and capillary zone during recharge events when the water table rapidly fluctuates has not been evaluated. This study uses laboratory column experiments to simulate PFAS release from pre-contaminated subsurface and capillary fringe during groundwater table fluctuation. The results reveal that the groundwater level fluctuations during MAR increased the release of perfluorobutanesulfonic acid (PFBS) and perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS) from the capillary fringe, but the fraction released depended on PFAS type and their association with soil colloids. A higher proportion of PFOS in column effluent was found to be associated with particles, while a greater portion of released PFBS was in a free or dissolved state. The direction of water table fluctuation did not affect the release of PFAS in this study. A lack of change in the concentration of bromide, a conservative tracer, during flow interruption, indicates that diffusion of PFAS through reconnected pores during water table rise had an insignificant effect on PFAS release. Overall, this study provides insights into how PFAS can be released from the subsurface and capillary fringe during managed aquifer recharge when the groundwater level is expected to fluctuate quickly.

Characteristics of PCDD/Fs in soil and sediment samples collected from A-So former airbase in Central Vietnam

A-So airbase, located in A-Luoi Valley - Central Vietnam, is a former military base occupied by US Special Forces between 1963 and 1966. The storage of Agent Orange in A-So airbase during the Vietnam War now poses a high potential for PCDD/F contamination in soils and sediments. In order to evaluate the occurrence and characteristics of PCDD/Fs in A-So former airbase, which has been reserved for a long time and suffered almost no significant anthropogenic impacts, soil and sediment samples were collected from 40 sites of two adjacent zones A and B in an area of 160,000 m². Seventeen 2,3,7,8-substituted PCDD/Fs were analyzed using HRCG/HRMS (US EPA method 1613). Results indicate that concentrations of PCDD/Fs measured in zone A ranged from 95.0 to 4534 ng kg_dw^-1 (4.58 to 746 ng TEQ kg_dw^-1), while those in zone B were in the range of 80.8-4150 ng kg_dw^-1 (2.70-89.0 ng TEQ kg_dw^-1). The concentrations of PCDD/Fs observed in zone A are higher than those in zone B, suggesting that PCDD/Fs could be transported from zone A to zone B through surface soil erosion and runoff events. The main contributor to the total TEQ concentration was 2,3,7,8-TCDD, which was the indicator of Agent Orange contamination, accounting for 91 ± 9% and 72 ± 17% of the total TEQ concentrations measured in zones A and B, respectively. Comparison of PCDD/F concentrations in different soil layers reveals that the topsoil layer (at depth < 1 m) contributed 81-95% to the total PCDD/Fs in the study area, indicating that future remediation projects should focus on this topsoil layer. Since PCDD/F contamination in A-So airbase has not significantly improved for the last 20 years, remediation projects are urgently needed in order to mitigate the negative impacts of PCDD/F contamination on human health and wellbeing.
