Digital literacy, technological literacy, and internet literacy as predictors of attitude toward applying computer-supported education

Even though there is an abundance of research on computer supported education (CSE), digital literacy (DL), technological literacy (TL), and internet literacy (IL), the correlation between them and their effect on each other have not been analyzed in the literature. However, no study has been conducted on the correlation between and effect of CSE, DL, TL, and IL and which additionally explains their relationship to each other. This study aims to analyze the effect levels among the latent variables of DL, TL, and IL, and the attitude toward applying CSE and these latent variables' ratios to each other. For this purpose, eight hypotheses were developed after reviewing the literature. A relational descriptive model is used to detect the presence and extent of covariance. The participants of this study were 510 prospective teachers. Exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis of the scales were performed. The hypotheses of the research were tested with the structural equation model. As a result, it was revealed that DL, TL, and IL together significantly affect and explain the attitude towards CSE. Different suggestions have been developed based on the results of the research.

Design-Oriented Thinking in STEM education: Exploring the Impact on Preschool Children's Twenty-First-Century Skills

Given early childhood is a critical period for acquiring the twenty-first-century skills, the present study aimed to examine the effect of design-oriented STEM activities on the twenty-first-century skills of preschool children in line with the experimental design. A mixed factorial analysis of variance (ANOVA) of 3 (time: pre-test, post-test and persistence) × 2 (experimental group and control group) was used to test the hypothesis. The Bayesian factor analysis for mixed data was performed to identify the effects of design-oriented STEM education on differences between groups as well as within the group. The study results indicated that design-oriented STEM activities permanently increased the total scores of the children in the experimental group as regards the twenty-first-century skills. It also appeared that design-oriented STEM activities permanently enhanced all sub-dimensions of life and career skills; learning and innovation skills; and information, media and technology skills. In the end, a number of recommendations were presented in accordance with the results of the study.

Technological literacy in nursing education: A scoping review

BACKGROUND

Nurses are the key professionals in the introduction, implementation, and use of technology in clinical practice. A lack of technical expertise and technological understanding poses a challenge to the quality of health services and possibly to the safety, dignity, and quality of life of patients. Therefore, possessing technological literacy upon completing nursing baccalaureate studies is essential. However, no previous scoping review has mapped the existing studies of technological literacy in nursing education.

OBJECTIVES

To map and assess the published studies on technological literacy in nursing education and to identify how educational institutions operationalize, teach, measure, and maintain students' technological literacy throughout their educational programs.

DESIGN

A scoping review was conducted using the methodological framework of Arksey and O'Malley. The reporting was guided by the PRISMA extension for Scoping Reviews.

METHODS

A comprehensive systematic search of the MEDLINE, EMBASE, PsycINFO, ERIC, and CINAHL was performed for studies published from January 2008 through March 2020. Two authors independently assessed eligibility and extracted data. The reference lists of the included studies were also examined.

RESULTS

The review included 28 papers from 27 studies. Three thematic groupings with their respective subgroups were identified among the included papers: 1) the acquisition (simulated electronic documentation, diversified learning methods, and evaluation learning focus), 2) the measurement (digital/computer literacy/competence, nursing informatics competence, technology acceptance, and students' interests and preferences in technology), and 3) the maintenance (follow-up evaluation) of technological knowledge and skills.

CONCLUSIONS

Pedagogical models designed to teach an entire process for the acquisition, measurement, and maintenance of technological literacy are lacking. Studies are needed that bring technological competencies to a higher level, including problem-solving and critical thinking. Educators' competencies should be enhanced. Educational institutions need to ensure the readiness of future nurses for a technology-enriched environment by providing the necessary knowledge in technological literacy.
