Exploring the Effects of the Photochromic Response and Crystallization on the Local Structure of Noncrystalline Niobium Oxide

Niobium oxide (Nb2O5) is a versatile semiconductor material with photochromic properties. This study investigates the local structure of noncrystalline, short-range-ordered niobium oxide synthesized via a sol-gel method. X-ray atomic pair distribution function analysis unravels the structural arrangements within the noncrystalline materials at a local scale. In the following, in situ scattering and diffraction experiments elucidate the heat-induced structure transformation of the amorphous material into crystalline TT-Nb2O5 at 550 °C. In addition, the effect of photocatalytic conditions on the structure of the material was investigated by exposing the short-range-ordered and crystalline materials to ultraviolet light, resulting in a reversible color change from white to dark brown or blue. This photochromic response is due to the reversible elongation of the nearest Nb-O neighbors, as shown by local structure analysis based on in situ PDF analyses. Optical band gap calculations based on the ultraviolet-visible spectra collected for both the short-range-ordered and crystalline materials show that the band gap values reduced for the darkened materials return to their initial state after bleaching. Furthermore, electron energy loss spectroscopy reveals the reduction of Nb5+ to Nb4+ centers as a persistent effect. The study establishes a correlation between the band gap and the structure of niobium oxide, providing insights into the structure-performance relation at the atomic level.

In situ synchrotron X-ray total scattering measurements and analysis of colloidal CsPbX3 nanocrystals during flow synthesis

In situ X-ray scattering measurements of CsPbX3 (X = Cl, Br, I) nanocrystal formation and halide exchange at NSLS-II beamlines were performed in an automated flow reactor. Total scattering measurements were performed at the 28-ID-2 (XPD) beamline and small-angle X-ray scattering at the 16-ID (LiX) beamline. Nanocrystal structural parameters of interest, including size, size distribution and atomic structure, were extracted from modeling the total scattering data. The results highlight the potential of these beamlines and the measurement protocols described in this study for studying dynamic processes of colloidal nanocrystal synthesis in solution with timescales on the order of seconds.

Atomic pair distribution function at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory: application to the Pb1-xLaxZr0.40Ti0.60O3 ferroelectric system

This work reports the setting up of the X-ray diffraction and spectroscopy beamline at the Brazilian Synchrotron Light Laboratory for performing total scattering experiments to be analyzed by atomic pair distribution function (PDF) studies. The results of a PDF refinement for Al₂O₃ standard are presented and compared with data acquired at a beamline of the Advanced Photon Source, where it is common to perform this type of experiment. A preliminary characterization of the Pb_1-xLa_xZr_0.40Ti_0.60O₃ ferroelectric system, with x = 0.11, 0.12 and 0.15, is also shown.

Beamline P02.1 at PETRA III for high-resolution and high-energy powder diffraction

Powder X-ray diffraction techniques largely benefit from the superior beam quality provided by high-brilliance synchrotron light sources in terms of photon flux and angular resolution. The High Resolution Powder Diffraction Beamline P02.1 at the storage ring PETRA III (DESY, Hamburg, Germany) combines these strengths with the power of high-energy X-rays for materials research. The beamline is operated at a fixed photon energy of 60 keV (0.207 Å wavelength). A high-resolution monochromator generates the highly collimated X-ray beam of narrow energy bandwidth. Classic crystal structure determination in reciprocal space at standard and non-ambient conditions are an essential part of the scientific scope as well as total scattering analysis using the real space information of the pair distribution function. Both methods are complemented by in situ capabilities with time-resolution in the sub-second regime owing to the high beam intensity and the advanced detector technology for high-energy X-rays. P02.1's efficiency in solving chemical and crystallographic problems is illustrated by presenting key experiments that were carried out within these fields during the early stage of beamline operation.
