Development of Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 nanocomposite for dental protheses

Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 nanocomposite was synthesized by co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment methods. After the characterization of the MWCNT-SiO2 powder, specimens were obtained from the synthesized material Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 by uniaxial pressing for a second characterization and later comparison of its optical and mechanical properties with the conventional Y-TZP. The MWCNT-SiO2 was presented in bundles of carbon nanotubes coated by silica (mean length: 5.10 ± 1.34 μm /D90: 6.9 μm). The composite manufactured was opaque (contrast ratio: 0.9929 ± 0.0012) and had a white color with a slightly difference from the conventional Y-TZP (ΔE00: 4.4 ± 2.2) color. The mechanical properties of Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2: vickers hardness (10.14 ± 1.27 GPa; p = 0.25) and fracture toughness (4.98 ± 0.30 MPa m1/2; p = 0.39), showed no significant difference from the conventional Y-TZP (hardness: 8.87 ± 0.89; fracture toughness: 4.98 ± 0.30 MPa m1/2). However, for flexural strength (p = 0.003), a lower value was obtained for Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 (299.4 ± 30.5 MPa) when compared to the control Y-TZP (623.7 ± 108.8 MPa). The manufactured Y-TZP/MWCNT-SiO2 composite presented satisfactory optical properties, however the co-precipitation and hydrothermal treatment methods need to be optimized to avoid the formation of porosities and strong agglomerates, both from Y-TZP particles and MWCNT-SiO2 bundles, which lead to a significant decrease in the material flexural strength.

Bond durability when applying phosphate ester monomer-containing primers vs. self-adhesive resin cements to zirconia: Evaluation after different aging conditions

PURPOSE

This study aimed to evaluate bond durability when applying 2 phosphate ester monomer-containing self-adhesive resin cements alone, versus a combination of phosphate ester monomer-containing primer conditioning plus 2 conventional resin cements requiring primers, to zirconia after different artificial aging methods.

METHODS

We cemented air-abraded zirconia plates to composite resin cylinders with self-adhesive resin cements (MS; RU) alone or cemented them with traditional resin cements (ZRV; ZVN) after pre-conditioning with a zirconia primer. A shear bond strength (SBS) test were performed after subjecting them to 19 different aging conditions (n = 15) comprising 30,000× thermocycles, air storage at room temperature (RT), water storage at RT, or at 37 °C for 24 h, 1 week, 1, 3, 6, and 12 months. Zirconia powders mixed with zirconia primer or 2 self-adhesive resin cements were characterized by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy.

RESULTS

Groups MS and ZVN obtained the highest SBS after all of aging methods. SBS after 6 months of storage was similar to SBS after 24 h of storage, while both were higher than SBS after 1 year of storage. Water storage at 37 °C provided higher SBS than RT water storage did. We detected a Zr-O-P bond in both self-adhesive resin cement/zirconia powder mixtures.

CONCLUSIONS

Application of self-adhesive resin cements alone could be an alternative to pre-conditioning with a zirconia primer followed by the application of conventional resin cements. Formation of Zr-O-P bonds contributed to the bonding improvement of self-adhesive resin cements. Different aging conditions affected SBS values.

Improvement of mechanical properties of Y-TZP by thermal annealing with monoclinic zirconia nanoparticle coating

OBJECTIVE

To assess whether a thermal annealing with a monoclinic zirconia (mZrO₂) nanoparticle coating can improve the reliability of sandblasted yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystals (Y-TZP) and maintain its mechanical strength.

METHODS

Commercially available Y-TZP (Lava Frame, 3M Dental Products) disks were sintered and surface-treated as follows: AS (as sintered, with no treatment); SB (sandblasting); SB-TA (sandblasting followed by thermal annealing at 1000 °C); and SB-mZr-TA (sandblasting followed by thermal annealing at 1000 °C with the mZrO₂ nanoparticle coating). The mZrO₂ nanoparticles of 21 nm in size were prepared by a hydrothermal method, and coated onto Y-TZP sintered disks as a 5 g/L ethanol dispersion. Biaxial flexural strength (S) was measured using the piston-on-three-ball test, and reliability was evaluated by the Weibull modulus (m).

RESULTS

Biaxial flexural tests showed a significant increase in the strength of Group SB (S_SB = 1445 ± 191 MPa) compared with Group AS (S_AS = 1071 ± 112 MPa). The thermal annealing improved the reliabilities of the sandblasted Y-TZP (m_SB-TA = 20.14 and m_SB-mZr-TA = 21.33), as compared with Group SB (m_SB = 7.77). However, the conventional thermal annealing without the mZrO₂ coating caused a significant decrease in the strength of sandblasted Y-TZP (S_SB-TA = 1273 ± 65 MPa). Importantly, the mZrO₂ coating prevented the decrease in the strength caused by conventional thermal annealing (S_SB-mZr-TA = 1379 ± 65 MPa).

SIGNIFICANCE

The thermal annealing with the mZrO₂ nanoparticle coating can improve the reliability of sandblasted Y-TZP and maintain its mechanical strength, which would otherwise be decreased by the conventional annealing process.
