Microbial chemolithotrophic oxidation of pyrite in a subsurface shale weathering environment: Geologic considerations and potential mechanisms

Oxidative weathering of pyrite plays an important role in the biogeochemical cycling of Fe and S in terrestrial environments. While the mechanism and occurrence of biologically accelerated pyrite oxidation under acidic conditions are well established, much less is known about microbially mediated pyrite oxidation at circumneutral pH. Recent work (Percak-Dennett et al., 2017, Geobiology, 15, 690) has demonstrated the ability of aerobic chemolithotrophic microorganisms to accelerate pyrite oxidation at circumneutral pH and proposed two mechanistic models by which this phenomenon might occur. Here, we assess the potential relevance of aerobic microbially catalyzed circumneutral pH pyrite oxidation in relation to subsurface shale weathering at Susquehanna Shale Hills Critical Zone Observatory (SSHCZO) in Pennsylvania, USA. Specimen pyrite mixed with native shale was incubated in groundwater for 3 months at the inferred depth of in situ pyrite oxidation. The colonized materials were used as an inoculum for pyrite-oxidizing enrichment cultures. Microbial activity accelerated the release of sulfate across all conditions. 16S rRNA gene sequencing and metagenomic analysis revealed the dominance of a putative chemolithoautotrophic sulfur-oxidizing bacterium from the genus Thiobacillus in the enrichment cultures. Previously proposed models for aerobic microbial pyrite oxidation were assessed in terms of physical constraints, enrichment culture geochemistry, and metagenomic analysis. Although we conclude that subsurface pyrite oxidation at SSCHZO is largely abiotic, this work nonetheless yields new insight into the potential pathways by which aerobic microorganisms may accelerate pyrite oxidation at circumneutral pH. We propose a new "direct sulfur oxidation" pathway, whereby sulfhydryl-bearing outer membrane proteins mediate oxidation of pyrite surfaces through a persulfide intermediate, analogous to previously proposed mechanisms for direct microbial oxidation of elemental sulfur. The action of this and other direct microbial pyrite oxidation pathways have major implications for controls on pyrite weathering rates in circumneutral pH sedimentary environments where pore throat sizes permit widespread access of microorganisms to pyrite surfaces.

Metagenomics of Antarctic Marine Sediment Reveals Potential for Diverse Chemolithoautotrophy

The microbial biogeochemical processes occurring in marine sediment in Antarctica remain underexplored due to limited access. Further, these polar habitats are unique, as they are being exposed to significant changes in their climate. To explore how microbes drive biogeochemistry in these sediments, we performed a shotgun metagenomic survey of marine surficial sediment (0 to 3 cm of the seafloor) collected from 13 locations in western Antarctica and assembled 16 high-quality metagenome assembled genomes for focused interrogation of the lifestyles of some abundant lineages. We observe an abundance of genes from pathways for the utilization of reduced carbon, sulfur, and nitrogen sources. Although organotrophy is pervasive, nitrification and sulfide oxidation are the dominant lithotrophic pathways and likely fuel carbon fixation via the reverse tricarboxylic acid and Calvin cycles. Oxygen-dependent terminal oxidases are common, and genes for reduction of oxidized nitrogen are sporadically present in our samples. Our results suggest that the underlying benthic communities are well primed for the utilization of settling organic matter, which is consistent with findings from highly productive surface water. Despite the genetic potential for nitrate reduction, the net catabolic pathway in our samples remains aerobic respiration, likely coupled to the oxidation of sulfur and nitrogen imported from the highly productive Antarctic water column above. IMPORTANCE The impacts of climate change in polar regions, like Antarctica, have the potential to alter numerous ecosystems and biogeochemical cycles. Increasing temperature and freshwater runoff from melting ice can have profound impacts on the cycling of organic and inorganic nutrients between the pelagic and benthic ecosystems. Within the benthos, sediment microbial communities play a critical role in carbon mineralization and the cycles of essential nutrients like nitrogen and sulfur. Metagenomic data collected from sediment samples from the continental shelf of western Antarctica help to examine this unique system and document the metagenomic potential for lithotrophic metabolisms and the cycles of both nitrogen and sulfur, which support not only benthic microbes but also life in the pelagic zone.

A Single Bacterium Capable of Oxidation and Reduction of Iron at Circumneutral pH

Fe(II)-oxidizing microorganisms and Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms, which drive the biogeochemical Fe cycle on the Earth's surface, are phylogenetically and ecologically diverse. However, no single organism capable of aerobic Fe(II) oxidation and anaerobic Fe(III) reduction at circumneutral pH have been reported so far. Here, we report a novel neutrophilic Fe(II)-oxidizing Rhodoferax bacterium, strain MIZ03, isolated from an iron-rich wetland in Japan. Our cultivation experiments demonstrate that MIZ03 represents a much more versatile metabolism for energy acquisition than previously recognized in the genus Rhodoferax. MIZ03 can grow chemolithoautotrophically at circumneutral pH by oxidation of Fe(II), H2, or thiosulfate as the sole electron donor under (micro)aerobic conditions (i.e., using O2 as the sole electron acceptor). In addition, it can reduce Fe(III) or nitrate under anaerobic conditions. Thus, this is the first report demonstrating the presence of a single bacterium capable of both Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction at circumneutral pH. The observed physiology was consistent with its 4.9-Mbp complete genome encoding key genes for iron oxidation/reduction (foxEY and mtrABC), for nitrate reduction (narGHI), for thiosulfate oxidation (soxABCDXYZ), and for carbon fixation via the Calvin cycle. Our metagenomic survey suggests that there are more Rhodoferax members capable of Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction. Such bifunctional Rhodoferax may have an ecological advantage in suboxic/anoxic environments at circumneutral pH by recycling of Fe as the electron donor and acceptor. IMPORTANCE The biogeochemical cycle of iron (Fe) via reactions of oxidation, reduction, precipitation, and dissolution is involved in the cycle of other ecologically relevant elements, such as C, N, P, S, As, Co, Ni, and Pb. The Fe cycle on the Earth's surface is driven by a variety of Fe(II)-oxidizing microorganisms and Fe(III)-reducing microorganisms. Here, we discovered a novel bacterium, Rhodoferax sp. strain MIZ03, capable of both Fe(II) oxidation and Fe(III) reduction at circumneutral pH, and we report its physiological characteristics and complete genome sequence. The unexpected capability of this bacterium provides novel insights into the Fe cycle in the environment. Moreover, this bacterium will help to better understand the molecular mechanisms of microbial Fe redox cycling as a model organism.

Life in hot acid: a genome-based reassessment of the archaeal order Sulfolobales

The order Sulfolobales was one of the first named Archaeal lineages, with globally distributed members from terrestrial thermal acid springs (pH < 4; T > 65°C). The Sulfolobales represent broad metabolic capabilities, ranging from lithotrophy, based on inorganic iron and sulfur biotransformations, to autotrophy, to chemoheterotrophy in less acidophilic species. Components of the 3-hydroxypropionate/4-hydroxybutyrate carbon fixation cycle, as well as sulfur oxidation, are nearly universally conserved, although dissimilatory sulfur reduction and disproportionation (Acidianus, Stygiolobus and Sulfurisphaera) and iron oxidation (Acidianus, Metallosphaera, Sulfurisphaera, Sulfuracidifex and Sulfodiicoccus) are limited to fewer lineages. Lithotrophic marker genes appear more often in highly acidophilic lineages. Despite the presence of facultative anaerobes and one confirmed obligate anaerobe, oxidase complexes (fox, sox, dox and a new putative cytochrome bd) are prevalent in many species (even facultative/obligate anaerobes), suggesting a key role for oxygen among the Sulfolobales. The presence of fox genes tracks with a putative antioxidant OsmC family peroxiredoxin, an indicator of oxidative stress derived from mixing reactive metals and oxygen. Extreme acidophily appears to track inversely with heterotrophy but directly with lithotrophy. Recent phylogenetic re-organization efforts are supported by the comparative genomics here, although several changes are proposed, including the expansion of the genus Saccharolobus.

The Weathering Microbiome of an Outcropping Granodiorite

Microorganisms have long been recognized for their capacity to catalyze the weathering of silicate minerals. While the vast majority of studies on microbially mediated silicate weathering focus on organotrophic metabolism linked to nutrient acquisition, it has been recently demonstrated that chemolithotrophic ferrous iron [Fe(II)] oxidizing bacteria (FeOB) are capable of coupling the oxidation of silicate mineral Fe(II) to metabolic energy generation and cellular growth. In natural systems, complex microbial consortia with diverse metabolic capabilities can exist and interact to influence the biogeochemical cycling of essential elements, including iron. Here we combine microbiological and metagenomic analyses to investigate the potential interactions among metabolically diverse microorganisms in the near surface weathering of an outcrop of the Rio Blanco Quartz Diorite (DIO) in the Luquillo Mountains of Puerto Rico. Laboratory based incubations utilizing ground DIO as metabolic energy source for chemolithotrophic FeOB confirmed the ability of FeOB to grow via the oxidation of silicate-bound Fe(II). Dramatically accelerated rates of Fe(II)-oxidation were associated with an enrichment in microorganisms with the genetic capacity for iron oxidizing extracellular electron transfer (EET) pathways. Microbially oxidized DIO displayed an enhanced susceptibility to the weathering activity of organotrophic microorganisms compared to unoxidized mineral suspensions. Our results suggest that chemolithotrophic and organotrophic microorganisms are likely to coexist and contribute synergistically to the overall weathering of the in situ bedrock outcrop.

A membrane-bound [NiFe]-hydrogenase large subunit precursor whose C-terminal extension is not essential for cofactor incorporation but guarantees optimal maturation

[NiFe]‐hydrogenases catalyze the reversible conversion of molecular hydrogen into protons end electrons. This reaction takes place at a NiFe(CN)₂(CO) cofactor located in the large subunit of the bipartite hydrogenase module. The corresponding apo‐protein carries usually a C‐terminal extension that is cleaved off by a specific endopeptidase as soon as the cofactor insertion has been accomplished by the maturation machinery. This process triggers complex formation with the small, electron‐transferring subunit of the hydrogenase module, revealing catalytically active enzyme. The role of the C‐terminal extension in cofactor insertion, however, remains elusive. We have addressed this problem by using genetic engineering to remove the entire C‐terminal extension from the apo‐form of the large subunit of the membrane‐bound [NiFe]‐hydrogenase (MBH) from Ralstonia eutropha. Unexpectedly, the MBH holoenzyme derived from this precleaved large subunit was targeted to the cytoplasmic membrane, conferred H₂‐dependent growth of the host strain, and the purified protein showed exactly the same catalytic activity as native MBH. The only difference was a reduced hydrogenase content in the cytoplasmic membrane. These results suggest that in the case of the R. eutropha MBH, the C‐terminal extension is dispensable for cofactor insertion and seems to function only as a maturation facilitator.

Microbial chemolithotrophy mediates oxidative weathering of granitic bedrock

The flux of solutes from the chemical weathering of the continental crust supplies a steady supply of essential nutrients necessary for the maintenance of Earth's biosphere. Promotion of weathering by microorganisms is a well-documented phenomenon and is most often attributed to heterotrophic microbial metabolism for the purposes of nutrient acquisition. Here, we demonstrate the role of chemolithotrophic ferrous iron [Fe(II)]-oxidizing bacteria in biogeochemical weathering of subsurface Fe(II)-silicate minerals at the Luquillo Critical Zone Observatory in Puerto Rico. Under chemolithotrophic growth conditions, mineral-derived Fe(II) in the Rio Blanco Quartz Diorite served as the primary energy source for microbial growth. An enrichment in homologs to gene clusters involved in extracellular electron transfer was associated with dramatically accelerated rates of mineral oxidation and adenosine triphosphate generation relative to sterile diorite suspensions. Transmission electron microscopy and energy-dispersive spectroscopy revealed the accumulation of nanoparticulate Fe-oxyhydroxides on mineral surfaces only under biotic conditions. Microbially oxidized quartz diorite showed greater susceptibility to proton-promoted dissolution, which has important implications for weathering reactions in situ. Collectively, our results suggest that chemolithotrophic Fe(II)-oxidizing bacteria are likely contributors in the transformation of rock to regolith.

Insights into the Fundamental Physiology of the Uncultured Fe-Oxidizing Bacterium Leptothrix ochracea

Leptothrix ochracea is known for producing large volumes of iron oxyhydroxide sheaths that alter wetland biogeochemistry. For over a century, these delicate structures have fascinated microbiologists and geoscientists. Because L. ochracea still resists long-term in vitro culture, the debate regarding its metabolic classification dates back to 1885. We developed a novel culturing technique for L. ochracea using in situ natural waters and coupled this with single-cell genomics and nanoscale secondary-ion mass spectrophotometry (nanoSIMS) to probe L. ochracea's physiology. In microslide cultures L. ochracea doubled every 5.7 h and had an absolute growth requirement for ferrous iron, the genomic capacity for iron oxidation, and a branched electron transport chain with cytochromes putatively involved in lithotrophic iron oxidation. Additionally, its genome encoded several electron transport chain proteins, including a molybdopterin alternative complex III (ACIII), a cytochrome bd oxidase reductase, and several terminal oxidase genes. L. ochracea contained two key autotrophic proteins in the Calvin-Benson-Bassham cycle, a form II ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase, and a phosphoribulose kinase. L. ochracea also assimilated bicarbonate, although calculations suggest that bicarbonate assimilation is a small fraction of its total carbon assimilation. Finally, L. ochracea's fundamental physiology is a hybrid of those of the chemolithotrophic Gallionella-type iron-oxidizing bacteria and the sheathed, heterotrophic filamentous metal-oxidizing bacteria of the Leptothrix-Sphaerotilus genera. This allows L. ochracea to inhabit a unique niche within the neutrophilic iron seeps.IMPORTANCE Leptothrix ochracea was one of three groups of organisms that Sergei Winogradsky used in the 1880s to develop his hypothesis on chemolithotrophy. L. ochracea continues to resist cultivation and appears to have an absolute requirement for organic-rich waters, suggesting that its true physiology remains unknown. Further, L. ochracea is an ecological engineer; a few L. ochracea cells can generate prodigious volumes of iron oxyhydroxides, changing the ecosystem's geochemistry and ecology. Therefore, to determine L. ochracea's basic physiology, we employed new single-cell techniques to demonstrate that L. ochracea oxidizes iron to generate energy and, despite having predicted genes for autotrophic growth, assimilates a fraction of the total CO₂ that autotrophs do. Although not a true chemolithoautotroph, L. ochracea's physiological strategy allows it to be flexible and to extensively colonize iron-rich wetlands.

Nitrate-Dependent Iron Oxidation: A Potential Mars Metabolism

This work considers the hypothetical viability of microbial nitrate-dependent Fe2+ oxidation (NDFO) for supporting simple life in the context of the early Mars environment. This draws on knowledge built up over several decades of remote and in situ observation, as well as recent discoveries that have shaped current understanding of early Mars. Our current understanding is that certain early martian environments fulfill several of the key requirements for microbes with NDFO metabolism. First, abundant Fe2+ has been identified on Mars and provides evidence of an accessible electron donor; evidence of anoxia suggests that abiotic Fe2+ oxidation by molecular oxygen would not have interfered and competed with microbial iron metabolism in these environments. Second, nitrate, which can be used by some iron oxidizing microorganisms as an electron acceptor, has also been confirmed in modern aeolian and ancient sediment deposits on Mars. In addition to redox substrates, reservoirs of both organic and inorganic carbon are available for biosynthesis, and geochemical evidence suggests that lacustrine systems during the hydrologically active Noachian period (4.1-3.7 Ga) match the circumneutral pH requirements of nitrate-dependent iron-oxidizing microorganisms. As well as potentially acting as a primary producer in early martian lakes and fluvial systems, the light-independent nature of NDFO suggests that such microbes could have persisted in sub-surface aquifers long after the desiccation of the surface, provided that adequate carbon and nitrates sources were prevalent. Traces of NDFO microorganisms may be preserved in the rock record by biomineralization and cellular encrustation in zones of high Fe2+ concentrations. These processes could produce morphological biosignatures, preserve distinctive Fe-isotope variation patterns, and enhance preservation of biological organic compounds. Such biosignatures could be detectable by future missions to Mars with appropriate instrumentation.

Imaging of Cellular Oxidoreductase Activity Suggests Mixotrophic Metabolisms in Thiomargarita spp

The largest known bacteria, Thiomargarita spp., have yet to be isolated in pure culture, but their large size allows for individual cells to be monitored in time course experiments or to be individually sorted for omics-based investigations. Here we investigated the metabolism of individual cells of Thiomargarita spp. by using a novel application of a tetrazolium-based dye that measures oxidoreductase activity. When coupled with microscopy, staining of the cells with a tetrazolium-formazan dye allows metabolic responses in Thiomargarita spp. to be to be tracked in the absence of observable cell division. Additionally, the metabolic activity of Thiomargarita sp. cells can be differentiated from the metabolism of other microbes in specimens that contain adherent bacteria. The results of our redox dye-based assay suggest that Thiomargarita is the most metabolically versatile under anoxic conditions, where it appears to express cellular oxidoreductase activity in response to the electron donors succinate, acetate, citrate, formate, thiosulfate, H₂, and H₂S. Under hypoxic conditions, formazan staining results suggest the metabolism of succinate and likely acetate, citrate, and H₂S. Cells incubated under oxic conditions showed the weakest formazan staining response, and then only to H₂S, citrate, and perhaps succinate. These results provide experimental validation of recent genomic studies of Candidatus Thiomargarita nelsonii that suggest metabolic plasticity and mixotrophic metabolism. The cellular oxidoreductase response of bacteria attached to the exterior of Thiomargarita also supports the possibility of trophic interactions between these largest of known bacteria and attached epibionts.

The metabolic potential of many microorganisms that cannot be grown in the laboratory is known only from genomic data. Genomes of Thiomargarita spp. suggest that these largest of known bacteria are mixotrophs, combining lithotrophic metabolism with organic carbon degradation. Our use of a redox-sensitive tetrazolium dye to query the metabolism of these bacteria provides an independent line of evidence that corroborates the apparent metabolic plasticity of Thiomargarita observed in recently produced genomes. Finding new cultivation-independent means of testing genomic results is critical to testing genome-derived hypotheses on the metabolic potentials of uncultivated microorganisms.

Chemolithotrophy in the continental deep subsurface: Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF), USA

The deep subsurface is an enormous repository of microbial life. However, the metabolic capabilities of these microorganisms and the degree to which they are dependent on surface processes are largely unknown. Due to the logistical difficulty of sampling and inherent heterogeneity, the microbial populations of the terrestrial subsurface are poorly characterized. In an effort to better understand the biogeochemistry of deep terrestrial habitats, we evaluate the energetic yield of chemolithotrophic metabolisms and microbial diversity in the Sanford Underground Research Facility (SURF) in the former Homestake Gold Mine, SD, USA. Geochemical data, energetic modeling, and DNA sequencing were combined with principle component analysis to describe this deep (down to 8100 ft below surface), terrestrial environment. SURF provides access into an iron-rich Paleoproterozoic metasedimentary deposit that contains deeply circulating groundwater. Geochemical analyses of subsurface fluids reveal enormous geochemical diversity ranging widely in salinity, oxidation state (ORP 330 to −328 mV), and concentrations of redox sensitive species (e.g., Fe²⁺ from near 0 to 6.2 mg/L and Σ S^2- from 7 to 2778μg/L). As a direct result of this compositional buffet, Gibbs energy calculations reveal an abundance of energy for microorganisms from the oxidation of sulfur, iron, nitrogen, methane, and manganese. Pyrotag DNA sequencing reveals diverse communities of chemolithoautotrophs, thermophiles, aerobic and anaerobic heterotrophs, and numerous uncultivated clades. Extrapolated across the mine footprint, these data suggest a complex spatial mosaic of subsurface primary productivity that is in good agreement with predicted energy yields. Notably, we report Gibbs energy normalized both per mole of reaction and per kg fluid (energy density) and find the later to be more consistent with observed physiologies and environmental conditions. Further application of this approach will significantly expand our understanding of the deep terrestrial biosphere.

Metabolic adaptation and trophic strategies of soil bacteria-C1- metabolism and sulfur chemolithotrophy in Starkeya novella

The highly diverse and metabolically versatile microbial communities found in soil environments are major contributors to the global carbon, nitrogen, and sulfur cycles. We have used a combination of genome -based pathway analysis with proteomics and gene expression studies to investigate metabolic adaptation in a representative of these bacteria, Starkeya novella, which was originally isolated from agricultural soil. This bacterium was the first facultative sulfur chemolithoautotroph that was isolated and it is also able to grow with methanol and on over 39 substrates as a heterotroph. However, using glucose, fructose, methanol, thiosulfate as well as combinations of the carbon compounds with thiosulfate as growth substrates we have demonstrated here that contrary to the previous classification, S. novella is not a facultative sulfur chemolitho- and methylotroph, as the enzyme systems required for these two growth modes are always expressed at high levels. This is typical for key metabolic pathways. In addition enzymes for various pathways of carbon dioxide fixation were always expressed at high levels, even during heterotrophic growth on glucose or fructose, which suggests a role for these pathways beyond the generation of reduced carbon units for cell growth, possibly in redox balancing of metabolism. Our results then indicate that S. novella, a representative of the Xanthobacteraceae family of methylotrophic soil and freshwater dwelling bacteria, employs a mixotrophic growth strategy under all conditions tested here. As a result the contribution of this bacterium to either carbon sequestration or the release of climate active substances could vary very quickly, which has direct implications for the modeling of such processes if mixotrophy proves to be the main growth strategy for large populations of soil bacteria.

Uranium extremophily is an adaptive, rather than intrinsic, feature for extremely thermoacidophilic Metallosphaera species

Thermoacidophilic archaea are found in heavy metal-rich environments, and, in some cases, these microorganisms are causative agents of metal mobilization through cellular processes related to their bioenergetics. Given the nature of their habitats, these microorganisms must deal with the potentially toxic effect of heavy metals. Here, we show that two thermoacidophilic Metallosphaera species with nearly identical (99.99%) genomes differed significantly in their sensitivity and reactivity to uranium (U). Metallosphaera prunae, isolated from a smoldering heap on a uranium mine in Thüringen, Germany, could be viewed as a "spontaneous mutant" of Metallosphaera sedula, an isolate from Pisciarelli Solfatara near Naples. Metallosphaera prunae tolerated triuranium octaoxide (U(3)O(8)) and soluble uranium [U(VI)] to a much greater extent than M. sedula. Within 15 min following exposure to "U(VI) shock," M. sedula, and not M. prunae, exhibited transcriptomic features associated with severe stress response. Furthermore, within 15 min post-U(VI) shock, M. prunae, and not M. sedula, showed evidence of substantial degradation of cellular RNA, suggesting that transcriptional and translational processes were aborted as a dynamic mechanism for resisting U toxicity; by 60 min post-U(VI) shock, RNA integrity in M. prunae recovered, and known modes for heavy metal resistance were activated. In addition, M. sedula rapidly oxidized solid U(3)O(8) to soluble U(VI) for bioenergetic purposes, a chemolithoautotrophic feature not previously reported. M. prunae, however, did not solubilize solid U(3)O(8) to any significant extent, thereby not exacerbating U(VI) toxicity. These results point to uranium extremophily as an adaptive, rather than intrinsic, feature for Metallosphaera species, driven by environmental factors.

Thermodynamics and kinetics of sulfide oxidation by oxygen: a look at inorganically controlled reactions and biologically mediated processes in the environment

The thermodynamics for the first electron transfer step for sulfide and oxygen indicates that the reaction is unfavorable as unstable superoxide and bisulfide radical ions would need to be produced. However, a two-electron transfer is favorable as stable S(0) and peroxide would be formed, but the partially filled orbitals in oxygen that accept electrons prevent rapid kinetics. Abiotic sulfide oxidation kinetics improve when reduced iron and/or manganese are oxidized by oxygen to form oxidized metals which in turn oxidize sulfide. Biological sulfur oxidation relies on enzymes that have evolved to overcome these kinetic constraints to affect rapid sulfide oxidation. Here we review the available thermodynamic and kinetic data for H(2)S and HS• as well as O(2), reactive oxygen species, nitrate, nitrite, and NO(x) species. We also present new kinetic data for abiotic sulfide oxidation with oxygen in trace metal clean solutions that constrain abiotic rates of sulfide oxidation in metal free solution and agree with the kinetic and thermodynamic calculations. Moreover, we present experimental data that give insight on rates of chemolithotrophic and photolithotrophic sulfide oxidation in the environment. We demonstrate that both anaerobic photolithotrophic and aerobic chemolithotrophic sulfide oxidation rates are three or more orders of magnitude higher than abiotic rates suggesting that in most environments biotic sulfide oxidation rates will far exceed abiotic rates due to the thermodynamic and kinetic constraints discussed in the first section of the paper. Such data reshape our thinking about the biotic and abiotic contributions to sulfide oxidation in the environment.
