Bio-Templated Chiral Zeolitic Imidazolate Framework-8 for Enantioselective Chemoresistive Sensing

Chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) have gained rising attention as ordered nanoporous materials for enantiomer separations, chiral catalysis, and sensing.  Among those, chiral MOFs are generally obtained through complex synthetic routes by using a limited choice of reactive chiral organic precursors as the primary linkers or auxiliary ligands.  Here, we report a template-controlled synthesis of chiral MOFs from achiral precursors grown on chiral nematic cellulose-derived nanostructured bio-templates. We demonstrate that chiral MOFs, specifically, zeolitic imidazolate framework-8 (ZIF-8), can be grown from regular precursors within nanoporous organized chiral nematic nanocelluloses via directed assembly on twisted bundles of cellulose nanocrystals. The template-grown chiral ZIF-8 possesses tetragonal crystal structure with chiral space group of P41, which is different from traditional cubic crystal structure of I-43m for freely grown conventional ZIF-8. The uniaxially compressed dimensions of the unit cell of templated ZIF-8 and crystalline dimensions are signatures of this structure. We observe that the templated chiral ZIF-8 can facilitate the enantiotropic sensing.  It shows enantioselective recognition and chiral sensing abilities with a low limit of detection of 39 µM and the corresponding limit of chiral detection of 300 µM for representative chiral amino acid, D- and L- alanine.

One-pot synthesis of a novel chiral Zr-based metal-organic framework for capillary electrochromatographic enantioseparation

A novel chiral stationary phase (CSP) of Zr-based metal-organic framework, l-Cys-PCN-224, was prepared by one-pot method and applied for the enantioseparation by capillary electrochromatography. The CSP was characterized by X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, Fourier-transform infrared spectra, nitrogen adsorption/desorption, circular dichroism spectrum, zeta-potential, and so on. The results revealed that the CSP had good crystallinity, high specific surface area (2580 m² /g), and good thermal stability. Meanwhile, the cross-section of l-Cys-PCN-224-bonded open-tubular (OT) column was observed by a scanning electron microscope, which proved the successful bonding of l-Cys-PCN-224 particles to the inner wall. Relative standard deviations of the column efficiencies were 3.87%-9.14%, and not obviously changed after 200 runs, which indicated that l-Cys-PCN-224-bonded OT column had the better stability and reproducibility. Excellent chiral separation performance was verified with nine kinds of natural amino acids including acidic, neutral, and basic as the analytes. All amino acids studied achieved good separation with the resolution of 1.38-13.9 and selector factor of 1.11-3.71. These results demonstrated that the CSP had an excellent potential in the chiral separation field.

Structural Elucidation of the Mechanism of Molecular Recognition in Chiral Crystalline Sponges

To gain insight into chiral recognition in porous materials we have prepared a family of fourth generation chiral metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) that have rigid frameworks and adaptable (flexible) pores. The previously reported parent material, [Co2 (S-mandelate)2 (4,4'-bipyridine)3 ](NO3 )2 , CMOM-1S, is a modular MOF; five new variants in which counterions (BF4- , CMOM-2S) or mandelate ligands are substituted (2-Cl, CMOM-11R; 3-Cl, CMOM-21R; 4-Cl, CMOM-31R; 4-CH3 , CMOM-41R) and the existing CF3 SO3- variant CMOM-3S are studied herein. Fine-tuning of pore size, shape, and chemistry afforded a series of distinct host-guest binding sites with variable chiral separation properties with respect to three structural isomers of phenylpropanol. Structural analysis of the resulting crystalline sponge phases revealed that host-guest interactions, guest-guest interactions, and pore adaptability collectively determine chiral discrimination.
