Abstract
Thermoplastic composites are continuously replacing thermosetting composites in lightweight structures. However, the accomplished work on the fatigue behavior of thermoplastics is quite limited. In the present work, we propose a numerical modeling approach for simulating fatigue delamination growth and predicting the residual tensile strength of quasi-isotropic TC 1225 LM PAEK thermoplastic coupons. The approach was supported and validated by tension and fatigue (non-interrupted and interrupted) tests. Fatigue delamination growth was simulated using a mixed-mode fatigue crack growth model, which was based on the cohesive zone modeling method. Quasi-static tension analyses on pristine and fatigued coupons were performed using a progressive damage model. These analyses were implemented using a set of Hashin-type strain-based failure criteria and a damage mechanics-based material property degradation module. Utilizing the fatigue model, we accurately foretold the expansion of delamination concerning the cycle count across all interfaces. The results agree well with C-scan images taken on fatigued coupons during interruptions of fatigue tests. An unequal and unsymmetric delamination growth was predicted due to the quasi-isotropic layup. Moreover, the combined models capture the decrease in the residual tensile strength of the coupons. During the quasi-static tension analysis of the fatigued coupons, we observed that the primary driving failure mechanisms were the rapid spread of existing delamination and the consequential severe matrix cracking.

Abstract
Examining crack propagation at the interface of bimaterial components under various conditions is essential for improving the reliability of semiconductor designs. However, the fracture behavior of bimaterial interfaces has been relatively underexplored in the literature, particularly in terms of numerical predictions. Numerical simulations offer vital insights into the evolution of interfacial damage and stress distribution in wafers, showcasing their dependence on material properties. The lack of knowledge about specific interfaces poses a significant obstacle to the development of new products and necessitates active remediation for further progress. The objective of this paper is twofold: firstly, to experimentally investigate the behavior of bimaterial interfaces commonly found in semiconductors under quasi-static loading conditions, and secondly, to determine their respective interfacial cohesive properties using an inverse cohesive zone modeling approach. For this purpose, double cantilever beam specimens were manufactured that allow Mode I static fracture analysis of the interfaces. A compliance-based method was used to obtain the crack size during the tests and the Mode I energy release rate (GIc). Experimental results were utilized to simulate the behavior of different interfaces under specific test conditions in Abaqus. The simulation aimed to extract the interfacial cohesive contact properties of the studied bimaterial interfaces. These properties enable designers to predict the strength of the interfaces, particularly under Mode I loading conditions. To this extent, the cohesive zone modeling (CZM) assisted in defining the behavior of the damage propagation through the bimaterial interfaces. As a result, for the silicon-epoxy molding compound (EMC) interface, the results for maximum strength and GIc are, respectively, 26 MPa and 0.05 N/mm. The second interface tested consisted of polyimide and silicon oxide between the silicon and EMC layers, and the results obtained are 21.5 MPa for the maximum tensile strength and 0.02 N/mm for GIc. This study's findings aid in predicting and mitigating failure modes in the studied chip packaging. The insights offer directions for future research, focusing on enhancing material properties and exploring the impact of manufacturing parameters and temperature conditions on delamination in multilayer semiconductors.

Abstract
With the increasing demand for lightweight and high-performance materials in the automotive and aerospace industries, full-thermoplastic hybrid composites have emerged as a pivotal solution, offering enhanced mechanical properties and design flexibility. This work aims to numerically model the fracture strength in full-thermoplastic hybrid composites made by forming and overmolding organosheets. The mode I fracture was investigated by modeling the behavior of T-joint specimens under a tensile test following the cohesive zone modeling (CZM) approach. The sample was designed to replicate the connection between the laminate and the overmolded part. Double cantilever beam (DCB) specimens were manufactured with organosheets and tested to mode I opening to determine the interlaminar fracture toughness. The fracture toughness out of the mode I test with DCB specimens was used to define the CZM parameters that describe the traction-separation law. Later, due to the particular geometry of the T-join specimens that under tensile load work close to pure mode I, the cohesive parameters were determined by inverse analysis, i.e., calibrating the theoretical models to match experimental results. The fracture resistance T-joint specimens appeared dependent on the fiber-bridging phenomenon during the delamination. In particular, the presence of fiber-bridging visible from the experimental results has been replicated by virtual analyses, and it is observed that it leads to a higher energy value before the interface's complete breakage. Moreover, a correspondence between the mode I fracture toughness of the DCB specimen and T-joint specimens was observed.

Abstract
Thermoplastic tapes are commonly processed by the rapid and efficient stamp forming process. During this forming process, the individual unidirectional tapes of the composite stack move relative to each other and relative to the surface of the tool while being in contact with the corresponding counterpart. As a result, the material exhibits a certain resistance against this movement, which is generally dependent on velocity, normal pressure, and temperature. Therefore, this work investigates the ply/tool and ply/ply slippage of unidirectional, carbon fiber reinforced polycarbonate tapes and provides an alternative implementation of the experimentally observed slippage using cohesive zone modeling. The backbone of the modeling approach is an experimental data set obtained from pull-through experiments. In comparison to common slippage or friction theories, the force plateau of thermoplastic UD tapes at elevated temperatures is observed after an initial force peak has been overcome. For both configurations, ply/tool and ply/ply, a reduction of the initial force peak was observed for increasing temperature. Furthermore, the resulting plateau force value is at least 36% higher in the ply/ply configuration compared to the ply/tool configuration at 200 °C. The derived cohesive zone model allows for accurate modeling of the initial force peak and the plateau.

Abstract
Biological soft interfaces often exhibit complex microscale interlocking geometries to ensure sturdy and flexible connections. If needed, the interlocking can rapidly be released on demand leading to an abrupt decrease of interfacial adhesion. Here, inspired by lizard tail autotomy where such apparently tunable interfacial fracture behavior can be observed, we hypothesized an interlocking mechanism between the tail and body based on the muscle-actuated mushroom-shaped microinterlocks along the fracture planes. To mimic the fracture behavior of the lizard tail, we developed a soft bilayer patch that consisted of a dense array of soft hemispherical microstructures in the upper layer acting as mechanical interlocks with the counter body part. The bottom control layer contained a microchannel that allowed to deflect the upper layer when applying the negative pressure, thus mimicking muscle contraction. In the microinterlocked condition, the biomimetic tail demonstrated a 2.7-fold and a three-fold increase in adhesion strength and toughness, respectively, compared to the pneumatically released microinterlocks. Furthermore, as per the computational analysis, the subsurface microchannel in the control layer enabled augmented adhesion by rendering the interface more compliant as a dissipative matrix, decreasing contact opening and strain energy dissipation by 50%. The contrasting features between the microinterlocked and released cases demonstrated a highly tunable adhesion of our biomimetic soft patch. The potential applications of our study are expected in soft robotics and prosthetics.

Abstract
Various types of internal defects occur during manufacturing and handling of composite materials. It is practically impossible to manufacture composite structures without defects, making it crucial to understand the effect of defects on their failure behavior to maintain structural safety. In this work, the effect of pre-defects on the failure behavior of plain weave textile composites was studied. Unit cell configurations with symmetric, in-phase, and shifted fiber tow arrangements were considered. Inter-laced warp and fill tows and matrix pockets of plain weave unit cells were modeled in three-dimensional finite elements, and cohesive elements were inserted between all bulk elements to account for the fracture modes of the fiber and matrix direction failure of warp and fill tows, matrix pocket failure, and interface failure. Unit cell models containing pre-defects of voids, tow-matrix pocket separation, warp-fill tow separation, and cracks in the warp and fill tows were analyzed, and their effects on progressive failure behavior were investigated in terms of the interaction between fiber tow arrangements and defects. Results indicated that initial failure occurred in matrix-direction failure mode in fill tows, whereas fiber tow-matrix pocket separation was the major failure mode under uniaxial tensile load. Furthermore, failure behavior was found to be highly dependent on the fiber tow arrangement pattern and the location of pre-defects.

Abstract
Compact-tension (CT) specimens made of low alloy 30CrMo steels were hydrogen-charged, and then subjected to the fracture toughness test. The experimental results revealed that the higher crack propagation and the lower crack growth resistance (CTOD-R curve) are significantly noticeable with increasing hydrogen embrittlement (HE) indexes. Moreover, the transition in the microstructural fracture mechanism from ductile (microvoid coalescence (MVC)) without hydrogen to a mixed quasi-cleavage (QC) fracture and QC + intergranular (IG) fracture with hydrogen was observed. The hydrogen-enhanced decohesion (HEDE) mechanism was characterized as the dominant HE mechanism. According to the experimental testing, the coupled problem of stress field and hydrogen diffusion field with cohesive zone stress analysis was employed to simulate hydrogen-assisted brittle fracture behavior by using ABAQUS software. The trapezoidal traction-separation law (TSL) was adopted, and the initial TSL parameters from the best fit to the load-displacement and J-integral experimental curves without hydrogen were calibrated for the critical separation of 0.0393 mm and the cohesive strength of 2100 MPa. The HEDE was implemented through hydrogen influence in the TSL, and to estimate the initial hydrogen concentration based on matching numerical and experimental load-line displacement curves with hydrogen. The simulation results show that the general trend of the computational CTOD-R curves corresponding to initial hydrogen concentration is almost the same as that obtained from the experimental data but in full agreement, the computational CTOD values being slightly higher. Comparative analysis of numerical and experimental results shows that the coupled model can provide design and prediction to calculate hydrogen-assisted fracture behavior prior to extensive laboratory testing, provided that the material properties and properly calibrated TSL parameters are known.

Abstract
Structural adhesives play an important role in aerospace manufacturing, since they provide fewer points of stress concentration compared to faster joints. The importance of adhesives in aerospace is increasing significantly because composites are being adopted to reduce weight and manufacturing costs. Furthermore, adhesive joints are also studied to determine the crashworthiness of airframe structure, where the main task for the adhesive is not to dissipate the impact energy, but to keep joint integrity so that the impact energy can be consumed by plastic work. Starting from an extensive campaign of experimental tests, a finite element model and a methodology are implemented to develop an accurate adhesive model in a single lap shear configuration. A single lap joint finite element model is built by MSC Apex, defining two specimens of composite material connected to each other by means of an adhesive; by the Digimat multi-scale modeling solution, the composite material is treated; and finally, by MSC’s Marc, the adhesive material is characterized as a cohesive applying the Cohesive Zone Modeling theory. The objective was to determine an appropriate methodology to predict interlaminar crack growth in composite laminates, defining the mixed mode traction separation law variability in function of the cohesive energy (Gc), the ratio between the shear strength τ and the tensile strength σ (β1), and the critical opening displacement υc.

Abstract
It is necessary to consider the influence of moisture damage on the interlaminar fracture toughness for composite structures that are used for outdoor applications. However, the studies on the progressive variation of the fracture toughness as a function of moisture content M (%) is rather limited. In this regard, this study focuses on the characterization of mode II delamination of carbon/epoxy composites conditioned at 70 °C/85% relative humidity (RH). End-notched flexure test is conducted for specimens aged at various moisture absorption levels. Experimental results reveal that mode II fracture toughness degrades with the moisture content, with a maximum of 23% decrement. A residual property model is used to predict the variation of the fracture toughness with the moisture content. Through numerical simulations, it is found that the approaches used to estimate the lamina and cohesive properties are suitable to obtain reliable simulation results. In addition, the damage initiation is noticed during the early loading stage; however, the complete damage is only observed when the numerical peak load is achieved. Results from the present research could serve as guidelines to predict the residual properties and simulate the mode II delamination behavior under moisture attack.
