An Anisotropic Peridynamic Model for Simulating Crack Propagation in Isotropic and Anisotropic Rocks

In this work, we present a peridynamic-based simulation method for modeling quasi-static fracture propagation in isotropic and anisotropic rock within the framework of peridynamic least square minimization (PDLSM). The original isotropic elastic PDLSM is further extended to investigate fracture propagation in anisotropic materials in this study. The proposed AN-PDLSM model integrates an anisotropic model in fracture mechanics to analyze the failure process of anisotropic rocks. An important advancement in this research lies in the incorporation of the maximum energy release rate criterion (MERR) into the PDLSM framework for the first time. This enhancement enables accurately determining crack propagation and the associated crack angles. The proposed model utilizes the energy release rate calculated through the J-integral method to assess bond breakage, and it employs a mesh-independent, piecewise linear fracture model to describe crack propagation. The proposed method fully combines the merits of traditional fracture mechanics with the unique capabilities of peridynamics. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed model, a simulation of fracture evolution in isotropic plates subjected to semi-circular bending tests is presented and compared with experimental results. It is shown that the proposed model accurately replicates fracture trajectories in isotropic specimens. In the context of anisotropic rock, the effect of a weak coefficient on crack morphology is discussed in order to obtain a suitable value. Additionally, the impact of bedding angles on fracture paths through our proposed model is also explored, revealing excellent agreement with experimental results. The findings in this research demonstrate that the proposed AN-PDLSM model is exceptionally proficient at capturing the intricate, oscillating crack paths observed in anisotropic rock materials.

An Analytical Solution for Stress Transfer between a Broken Prestressing Wire and Mortar Coating in PCCP

A prestressed concrete cylinder pipe (PCCP) consists of a concrete core, a steel cylinder, prestressing wires, and a mortar coating. Most PCCP failures are related to the breakage of prestressing wires. It is thus expected that the load-bearing capacity of PCCP is significantly affected by the length of the prestress loss zone and the stress distribution in the broken wire. Based on a tri-linear bond-slip model, the length of prestress loss zone and the stress transfer mechanism between a broken wire and a mortar coating are analysed in this paper. During the breaking (unloading) process of a prestressing wire, the interfacial bondline exhibits the following three stages: elastic stage, elastic-softening stage, and elastic-softening-debonding stage. The closed-form solutions for the interfacial slip, the interfacial shear stress, and the axial stress in the broken wire are derived for each stage. The solutions are verified by the finite element predictions. A parametric study is presented to investigate the effects of the size of the prestressing wires, the prestressing level, the interfacial shear strength, and the residual interfacial shear strength on the interfacial stress transfer. For an example PCCP with an inner diameter of 4 m, the length of prestress loss zone increases from 500 mm to 3300 mm as the radius of prestressing wire increases from 1 mm to 7 mm. It increases from 2700 mm to 7700 mm when the interfacial shear strength reduces from 3.94 MPa to 0.62 MPa and reduces from 13,200 mm to 7300 mm as the residual interfacial shear stress factor increases from 0.1 to 0.9.

In-situ X-ray Differential Micro-tomography for Investigation of Water-weakening in Quasi-brittle Materials Subjected to Four-point Bending

Several methods, including X-ray radiography, have been developed for the investigation of the characteristics of water-saturated quasi-brittle materials. Here, the water content is one of the most important factors influencing their strength and fracture properties, in particular, as regards to porous building materials. However, the research concentrated on the three-dimensional fracture propagation characteristics is still significantly limited due to the problems encountered with the instrumentation requirements and the size effect. In this paper, we study the influence of the water content in a natural quasi-brittle material on its mechanical characteristics and fracture development during in-situ four-point bending by employing high-resolution X-ray differential micro-tomography. The cylindrical samples with a chevron notch were loaded using an in-house designed four-point bending loading device with the vertical orientation of the sample. The in-house designed modular micro-CT scanner was used for the visualisation of the specimen’s behaviour during the loading experiments. Several tomographic scans were performed throughout the force-displacement diagrams of the samples. The reconstructed 3D images were processed using an in-house developed differential tomography and digital volume correlation algorithms. The apparent reduction in the ultimate strength was observed due to the moisture content. The crack growth process in the water-saturated specimens was identified to be different in comparison with the dry specimens.
