Selective Separation of Zr(IV) from Simulated High-Level Liquid Waste by Mesoporous Silica

The efficient separation of Zr(IV) ions from strong acidic and radioactive solutions is a significant challenge, especially in the context of the aqueous reprocessing of nuclear fuels. The complexity of such solutions, which are often characterized by high acidity and the presence of radioactive elements, poses formidable challenges for separation processes. Herein, several mesoporous silicas (HMS, MCM-41, KIT-6, and SiO2-70 Å) with excellent acid and radiation resistance properties were employed as sorbents to remove Zr(IV) ions from simulated high-level liquid waste. The batch experiments were designed to investigate the influence of adsorption time, HNO3 concentration, initial Zr(IV) concentration, adsorbent dosage, and temperature on the adsorption behavior of Zr(IV). The results indicate that the adsorption equilibrium time of mesoporous silica materials was approximately 8 h, and all the adsorption processes followed the pseudo-second-order kinetics equation. The isotherms of Zr(IV) adsorption by KIT-6 exhibited good agreement with the Langmuir model, while the Freundlich model could be utilized to fit the adsorption on HMS, MCM-41, and SiO2-70 Å. The adsorption capacity of MCM-41 for Zr(IV) in 3 mol/L HNO3 was 54.91 mg/g, which is three times the adsorption capacity reported for commercial silica gel (17.91 mg/g). The thermodynamic parameters indicate that the adsorption processes for zirconium are endothermic reactions. Furthermore, the mesoporous silicas exhibited a pronounced selectivity in the adsorption of Zr(IV) within a simulated high-level liquid waste containing 10 co-existing cations (3 mol/L HNO3). This suggests that mesoporous silicas have great potential for Zr(IV) removal in actual radioactive liquids with high acidity during spent fuel reprocessing.

Separation of Minor Actinides from High-Level Liquid Waste Using Novel Silica-Based Butyl-BTP Adsorbents

To separate the long-lived minor actinides (MA = Am, Cm) from high-level liquid waste (HLLW), we have been studying an advanced separation process via selective adsorption that uses minimal amounts of organic solvent and compact equipment. The process consists of two separation columns packed with a CMPO (octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoyl-methyl phosphine oxide) adsorbent for elemental group separation and a soft-donor named the R-BTP (2,6-bis-(5,6-dialkyl-1,2,4-triazine-3-yl) pyridine) adsorbent for the isolation of MA from lanthanides (Ln). In this work, the effects of nitrate ion (NO₃^-) on the adsorption behavior of Am(III) and a typical fission product Ln(III) onto the isoBu-BTP/SiO₂-P adsorbent were studied experimentally. Then, the desorption properties of the adsorbed element were examined using different eluting agents. A hot test for the separation of MA from the fission product Ln in a genuine MA containing effluent from the irradiated MOX-fuel treatment process was carried out using a nBu-BTP/SiO₂-P packed column. It was found that the separation factor between Am(III) and Ln(III)-FP is over 100 in the measured 0.5-4 M NO₃^-. The adsorbed elements could be effectively eluted off using a complexing agent such as DTPA or pure water. Complete separation between MA and Ln was achieved in the column results, indicating that the proposed MA separation process is feasible in principle.

Adsorption Behaviors of Palladium Ion from Nitric Acid Solution by a Silica-based Hybrid Donor Adsorbent

The adsorption behaviors of a silica-based hybrid donor adsorbent (TAMIA-EH+1-dodecanol)/SiO2-P towards Pd(II) were investigated under the effect of the contact time, temperature etc. in simulated high-level liquid waste. The adsorption rates of Pd(II) and Re(VII) were fairly fast and could reach the equilibrium state in only 1 h compared with other co-existing metal ions. The adsorption kinetics of Pd(II) was found to fit well with the pseudo-first order model. Even though with increasing the concentration of HNO3 above 1 M, the adsorption performance of (TAMIA-EH+1-dodecanol)/SiO2-P decreased gradually; it still exhibited a better selectivity towards Pd(II) when [HNO3] > 0.5 M. The adsorption isotherms of Pd(II) and Re(VII) were well-described by the Langmuir isotherm model, while the Freundlich isotherm model was considered to be more suitable for the adsorption of Ru(III), Zr(IV) and Mo(VI). A high temperature of an aqueous solution was not good for the effective recovery of Pd(II). The calculated thermodynamic parameters revealed that the adsorption of Pd(II) was exothermic in nature.

Extraction Mechanism of Lanthanide Ions into Silica-based Microparticles Studied by Single Microparticle Manipulation and Microspectroscopy

Single porous silica microparticles coated with a styrene-divinylbenzene polymer (SDB) impregnated with octyl(phenyl)-N,N-diisobutylcarbamoylmethylphosphine oxide (CMPO) were injected into an aqueous 3 mol/L nitric acid solution containing trivalent lanthanide (Ln(III)), as a high-level liquid waste model. We used the microcapillary manipulation-injection technique; and the extraction rate of Ln(III), as an Ln(III)-CMPO complex, into the single microparticles was measured by luminescence microspectroscopy. The extraction rate significantly depended on the Ln(III), CMPO, or NO₃^- concentration, and was analyzed in terms of diffusion in the pores of the microparticles and the complex formation of Ln(III). The results indicated that the rate-determining step in Ln(III) extraction was diffusion in the pore solution of the microparticles.
