Accurate ab initio potential energy surface, rovibrational energy levels and resonance interactions of triplet ( X ~ 3 B1 ) methylene

In this work, we report rovibrational energy levels for four isotopologues of methylene (CH2 , CHD, CD2 , and 13 CH2 ) in their ground triplet electronic state (X ~ 3 B1 ) from variational calculation up to ~10,000 cm-1 and using a new accurate ab initio potential energy surface (PES). Triplet methylene exhibits a large-amplitude bending vibration and can reach a quasilinear configuration due to its low barrier (~2000 cm-1 ). To construct the ab initio PES, the Dunning's augmented correlation-consistent core-valence orbital basis sets were employed up to the sextuple-ζ quality [aug-cc-pCVXZ, X = T, Q, 5, and 6] combined with the single- and double-excitation unrestricted coupled cluster approach with a perturbative treatment of triple excitations [RHF-UCCSD(T)]. We have shown that the accuracy of the ab initio energies is further improved by including the corrections due to the scalar relativistic effects, DBOC and high-order electronic correlations. For the first time, all the available experimental rovibrational transitions were reproduced with errors less than 0.12 cm-1 , without any empirical corrections. Unlike more "traditional" nonlinear triatomic molecules, we have shown that even the energies of the ground vibrational state (000) with rather small rotational quantum numbers are strongly affected by the very pronounced rovibrational resonance interactions. Accordingly, the polyad structure of the vibrational levels of CH2 and CD2 was analyzed and discussed. The comparison between the energy levels obtained from the effective Watson A-reduced Hamiltonian, from the generating-function approach and from a variational calculation was given.

Revealing Internal Rotation and 14N Nuclear Quadrupole Coupling in the Atmospheric Pollutant 4-Methyl-2-nitrophenol: Interplay of Microwave Spectroscopy and Quantum Chemical Calculations

The structure and interactions of oxygenated aromatic molecules are of atmospheric interest due to their toxicity and as precursors of aerosols. Here, we present the analysis of 4-methyl-2-nitrophenol (4MNP) using chirped pulse and Fabry-Pérot Fourier transform microwave spectroscopy in combination with quantum chemical calculations. The rotational, centrifugal distortion, and ¹⁴N nuclear quadrupole coupling constants of the lowest-energy conformer of 4MNP were determined as well as the barrier to methyl internal rotation. The latter has a value of 106.4456(8) cm^-1, significantly larger than those from related molecules with only one hydroxyl or nitro substituent in the same para or meta positions, respectively, as 4MNP. Our results serve as a basis to understand the interactions of 4MNP with atmospheric molecules and the influence of the electronic environment on methyl internal rotation barrier heights.

Mapping the temperature-dependent and network site-specific onset of spectral diffusion at the surface of a water cluster cage

We explore the kinetic processes that sustain equilibrium in a microscopic, finite system. This is accomplished by monitoring the spontaneous, time-dependent frequency evolution (the frequency autocorrelation) of a single OH oscillator, embedded in a water cluster held in a temperature-controlled ion trap. The measurements are carried out by applying two-color, infrared-infrared photodissociation mass spectrometry to the D₃O⁺·(HDO)(D₂O)₁₉ isotopologue of the "magic number" protonated water cluster, H⁺·(H₂O)₂₁ The OH group can occupy any one of the five spectroscopically distinct sites in the distorted pentagonal dodecahedron cage structure. The OH frequency is observed to evolve over tens of milliseconds in the temperature range (90 to 120 K). Starting at 100 K, large "jumps" are observed between two OH frequencies separated by ∼300 cm^-1, indicating migration of the OH group from the bound OH site at 3,350 cm^-1 to the free position at 3,686 cm^-1 Increasing the temperature to 110 K leads to partial interconversion among many sites. All sites are observed to interconvert at 120 K such that the distribution of the unique OH group among them adopts the form one would expect for a canonical ensemble. The spectral dynamics displayed by the clusters thus offer an unprecedented view into the molecular-level processes that drive spectral diffusion in an extended network of water molecules.

Isotopic Dependence of the Hydrogen-Transfer-Triggered Methyl-Group Rotation in Deuterated 5-Methyltropolone

We present here the first experimental study of the microwave spectrum of deuterated 5-methyltropolone, a molecule which exhibits two large-amplitude motions: an intramolecular hydrogen transfer (deuterium transfer in the current case of deuterated 5-methyltropolone) and a methyl torsion. The main goal of this study was to get information on the isotopic dependence of the main tunneling parameters of 5-methyltropolone in the framework of the two dimensional tunneling formalism, which previously has shown some counterintuitive results for isotopic dependence of tunneling parameters in 2-methylmalonaldehyde. Measurements were carried out by Fourier-transform microwave spectroscopy in the 9 GHz to 26 GHz frequency range. Theoretical analysis was carried out using a tunneling-rotational Hamiltonian based on a G₁₂ ^m extended-group-theory formalism. Our global fit of 384 transitions to 17 molecular parameters gave a weighted root-mean-square deviation of 0.8. The current study on the isotopic dependence of the main tunneling parameters in 5-methyltropolone supports the assumption of possible "leakage" between tunneling parameters in the two-dimensional tunneling formalism in use.
