Assessing the effect of piezoelectric ultrasonic scaler tip wear on root surface roughness under influence of various working parameters: A profilometric and atomic force microscopic study

Background

Assessing the effect of scaler tip wear on the root surface roughness using piezoelectric ultrasonic scaling device under influence of various working parameters, i.e. power setting, lateral force, and instrumentation time.

Materials and Methods

An experimental study was conducted using 160 single-rooted tooth samples divided into two groups of new (n = 80) and worn tips (n = 80). Samples were prepared to examine the root surface roughness after being instrumented by new and worn piezoelectric ultrasonic tips (8 new/8 worn) at different parameters. The erosion ratio (ER) of the new/worn tip was examined under an atomic force microscope and roughness over root surface was measured by a contact surface profilometer. One-way analysis of variance test, post hoc Tukey's test, and independent t-test were used for intragroup, pair-wise multiple comparisons and intergroup comparison of average roughness (Ra) value.

Results

A statistically significant difference was found between the ER of new and worn scaler tips (P < 0.001). Intragroup comparison between subgroups 1 and 8 showed a higher Ra value in both the groups (P < 0.005). There was a significantly higher Ra value of worn tips compared to new tips (P < 0.05). Significantly higher mean Ra value was shown when lateral force changed from 50 g to 100 g (P < 0.005).

Conclusions

Increasing value of power setting, lateral force, and instrumentation time caused more surface roughness in worn-out scaler tips compared to new scaler tips. Lateral force and instrumentation time proved to be a major factor influencing surface roughness.

Lateral Force and EMG Activity in Wide- and Narrow-Grip Bench Press in Various Conditions

The purpose of this study was to investigate the lateral force and contribution of shoulder horizontal adductor and elbow extensor muscles activity during wide- and narrow-grip bench press (BP) in various conditions, such as resistance-trained/non-trained, concentric/eccentric, and muscle fatigue/non-fatigue. We measured the lateral force on the bar and the electromyographic (EMG) muscle activity of pectoralis major (PM) and triceps brachii (TB) during 10 RM BP with wide grip (81 cm) and narrow grip (40 cm) in seven resistance-trained men and seven non-trained men. The all-reps average of the lateral-to-vertical force ratio both in resistance-trained and non-trained subjects was about 30% outward for the wide grip and about 10% inward for the narrow grip. The EMG contribution ratio PM/TB shows no significant differences between narrow and wide grip in all evaluated conditions except in non-trained subjects' muscle fatigue eccentric phase. Both resistance-trained and non-trained subjects did not push the bar straight upward, and the EMG PM/TB was almost unchanged by hand width. The direction adjustment of the force on the bar that achieves almost the same muscle activity degree of the shoulder and elbow joints might be optimal BP kinetics.

Lateral force removal of fungal spores to demonstrate how surface properties affect fungal spore retention

Microbial biofouling on polymer surfaces can lead to their biodeterioration. This may result in deterioration of the surface, leading to cracking and fracturing. Fungal spores from Aspergillus niger 1957, Aspergillus niger 1988 and Aureobasidium pullulans were tested to determine their strength of attachment on three surfaces, p(γ-MPS-co-MMA), p(γ-MPS-co-LMA) and spin-coated poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMAsc), using lateral force measurements. The results demonstrate that A. niger 1957 and A. niger 1988 spores were most easily removed from the p(γ-MPS-co-MMA) surface, which was the surface with the highest R_a value. The A. niger 1957 and A. pullulans spores were most difficult to remove from the PMMAsc surface, which was the hardest surface. A. niger 1988 spores were the most difficult to remove from p(γ-MPS-co-LMA), the most hydrophobic surface. The results with A. pullulans were difficult to elucidate since the spores bound to all three surfaces and were removed with similar rates of force. The lateral force results demonstrate that spore attachment to a surface is a multi-factorial process, and independent surface and microbial factors influence spore binding. Thus, each environmental scenario needs to be considered on an individual basis, since a solution to one biofouling issue will probably not translate across to other systems. Lateral forces exerted through ball or bar attachments in relation to the inclination of mini-implant underneath overdentures: in vitro study

OBJECTIVE

Lateral force to mini-implants should be avoided because mini-implants are weak mechanically because of its small diameter. Overdentures retained by mini-implants are usually formed using ball attachments. However, bar attachments can offer the advantage of splinting the mini-implants. This study examined the effect of attachments in withstanding these lateral forces in tilted mini-implants of overdentures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

Strain gauges were attached to the mini-implants (2.5 × 18 mm) embedded in an acrylic resin block. Two mini-implants were inserted vertically (Control) or with one mini-implant inclined at 10° or 20° (10-inclined and 20-inclined, respectively). The female portions of the attachments were secured to the denture base. A prefabricated ball attachment and CAD/CAM-fabricated bar attachment were compared. A vertical load of 49 N was applied to the occlusal surface at a distance 10 mm away from the center of two mini-implants. The lateral force borne by the mini-implants was measured via the attached strain gauge. Mann-Whitney U-test and an analysis of Bonferroni correction were used to compare differences between the two attachments and among the three models (P < 0.05).

RESULTS

The lateral force exerted to the inclined mini-implant was significantly greater than that borne by a vertical mini-implant for both attachment types. The lateral force on the 20° inclined mini-implants with bar attachments was smaller than that on mini-implants with ball attachments.

CONCLUSION

Inclined mini-implants are subjected to greater stresses than vertical ones, and a bar attachment can reduce the lateral forces borne by the mini-implant when one mini-implant inclined at 20°.

Direct measurement of lateral force using dual cantilevers

We have constructed an experimental system to measure a piconewton lateral force using dual cantilevers which cross with each other. The resolution of the lateral force is estimated to be 3.3 p ± 0.2 pN, which is comparable to forces due to thermal fluctuation. This experimental apparatus works so easily that it will enable us to determine forces during nano-manipulation and nano-tribological measurements.
