A Fully Methylated Cyclic Ether Solvent Enables Graphite Anode Cycling at Low Temperatures

Graphite anode suffers from great capacity loss and larger cell polarization under low-temperature conditions in lithium-ion batteries (LIBs), which are mainly caused by the high energy barrier for the Li+ desolvation process and sluggish Li+ transfer rate across the solid electrolyte interface (SEI). Regulating an electrolyte with an anion-dominated solvation structure could synchronously stabilize the interface and boost the reaction kinetics of the graphite anode. Herein, a highly ionic conductive electrolyte consisting of a fully methylated cyclic ether solvent of 2,2,4,4,5,5-hexamethyl-1,3-dioxolane (HMD) and fluoroethylene carbonate (FEC) cosolvent was designed. The high electron-donating effect and steric hindrance of -(CH3)2 in HMD endow the HMD-based electrolyte with high ionic conductivity but lower coordination numbers with Li+, and an anion-dominated solvation structure was formed. Such configuration can accelerate the desolvation process and induce the forming of a LiF-rich SEI film on the anode, avoiding the solvent coembedding into graphite and enhancing the ion migration rate under low temperatures. The assembled Li||graphite cell with the tame electrolyte outperformed the conventional carbonates-based cell, showing 93.8% capacity retention after 227 cycles for the DF-based cell compared to 64.7% after 150 cycles. It also exhibited a prolonged cycle life for 200 rounds with 81% capacity retention under -20 °C. Therefore, this work offers a valuable thought for solvent design and provides approaches to electrolyte design for low-temperature LIBs.

Electrolyte Design for Lithium-Ion Batteries for Extreme Temperature Applications

With increasing energy storage demands across various applications, reliable batteries capable of performing in harsh environments, such as extreme temperatures, are crucial. However, current lithium-ion batteries (LIBs) exhibit limitations in both low and high-temperature performance, restricting their use in critical fields like defense, military, and aerospace. These challenges stem from the narrow operational temperature range and safety concerns of existing electrolyte systems. To enable LIBs to function effectively under extreme temperatures, the optimization and design of novel electrolytes are essential. Given the urgency for LIBs operating in extreme temperatures and the notable progress in this research field, a comprehensive and timely review is imperative. This article presents an overview of challenges associated with extreme temperature applications and strategies used to design electrolytes with enhanced performance. Additionally, the significance of understanding underlying electrolyte behavior mechanisms and the role of different electrolyte components in determining battery performance are emphasized. Last, future research directions and perspectives on electrolyte design for LIBs under extreme temperatures are discussed. Overall, this article offers valuable insights into the development of electrolytes for LIBs capable of reliable operation in extreme conditions.

Failure Mechanism, Electrolyte Design, and Electrolyte/Electrode Interface Regulation for Low-Temperature Zinc-Based Batteries

With more renewable energy developed to satisfy the human need in the energy crisis, electricity storage is critical in power utilization and storage. Due to its high safety, high nature reserve, and high energy density, the zinc-based battery is drawing increasing attention. Together with the expansion of human activities, the low-temperature battery is developed to satisfy the power demand in extreme environments, and as a critical component, electrolytes shall have a low freezing point and satisfying electrochemical properties in cold conditions. In this review, the development of low-temperature electrolytes for zinc-based batteries will be comprehensively introduced. First, the failure mechanism of zinc-based battery at low temperature will be illustrated. Second, five main types of low-temperature electrolytes will be introduced in detail. Finally, the regulation of electrolyte/electrode surface at low temperature will be discussed. This review aims to provide a guideline for low-temperature electrolyte design from the perspective of molecular behavior regulation.

Entropy-Driven Solvation toward Low-Temperature Sodium-Ion Batteries with Temperature-Adaptive Feature

Salt precipitation at temperatures far above the freezing point of solvents is primarily responsible for performance decay of rechargeable batteries at low temperature, yet is still challenged by a lack of in-depth understanding of the design principle and ultimate solutions. Here, this is resolved via tuning the entropy of solvation in a strong-solvation (SS) and weak-solvation (WS) solvent mixture, in which a solvation structure can spontaneously transform at low temperature to avoid salt precipitation, endowing the electrolyte with a temperature-adaptive feature. The results affirm that such temperature-adaptive electrolyte ensures encouraging low-temperature performance in a hard carbon||Na_2/3 Ni_1/4 Cu_1/12 Mn_2/3 O₂ full cell with 90.6% capacity retention over 400 cycles at -40 °C. The generality of the concept is further expanded to construct a series of SS-WS electrolytes as potential candidates for rechargeable low-temperature sodium-ion batteries. The work shed lights on the importance of entropy tuning and affords a rational viewpoint on designing low-temperature electrolytes.

Taming Solvent-Solute Interaction Accelerates Interfacial Kinetics in Low-Temperature Lithium-Metal Batteries

Lithium (Li)-metal batteries promise energy density beyond 400 Wh kg^-1 , while their practical operation at an extreme temperature below -30 °C suffers severe capacity deterioration. Such battery failure highly relates to the remarkably increased kinetic barrier of interfacial processes, including interfacial desolvation, ion transportation, and charge transfer. In this work, the interfacial kinetics in three prototypical electrolytes are quantitatively probed by three-electrode electrochemical techniques and molecular dynamics simulations. Desolvation as the limiting step of interfacial processes is validated to dominate the cell impedance and capacity at low temperature. 1,3-Dioxolane-based electrolyte with tamed solvent-solute interaction facilitates fast desolvation, enabling the practical Li|LiNi_0.5 Co_0.2 Mn_0.3 O₂ cells at -40 °C to retain 66% of room-temperature capacity and withstand remarkably fast charging rate (0.3 C). The barrier of desolvation dictated by solvent-solute interaction environments is quantitatively uncovered. Regulating the solvent-solute interaction by low-affinity solvents emerges as a promising solution to low-temperature batteries.

Optimization Strategies of Electrolytes for Low-temperature Aqueous Batteries

Aqueous rechargeable batteries (ARBs) are considered promising electrochemical energy storage systems for grid-scale applications due to their low cost, high safety, and environmental benignity. With the demand for a wide range of application scenarios, batteries are required to work in various harsh conditions, especially the cold weather. Nevertheless, electrolytes would freeze at extremely low temperatures, resulting in dramatically sluggish kinetics and severe performance degradation. Here, we discuss the behaviors of hydrogen bonds and basic principles of anti-freezing mechanisms in aqueous electrolytes. Then, we present a systematical review of the optimization strategies of electrolytes for low-temperature aqueous batteries. Finally, the challenges and promising routes for further development of aqueous low-temperature electrolytes are provided. This review can serve as a comprehensive reference to boost the further development and practical applications of advanced ARBs operated at low temperatures.
