Queens of hearts: Exploring the lived experiences of mothers caring for infants with complex congenital heart disease in Sri Lanka

This qualitative study explored the lived experiences of eight Sri Lankan mothers of infants with complex congenital heart disease (CCHD) using semi-structured interviews. Four themes were generated as: illness perception, communication with medical staff, challenges faced, and coping mechanisms. These provided insight into the multi-faceted nature of mothers' experiences, importance of medical-caregiver communications and their need for psychosocial services. The findings enhance the limited knowledge of South-Asian primary CCHD caregiver experiences and will help in improving psychosocial support services in Sri Lanka.

Alberta Family Integrated Care™ and Standard Care: A Qualitative Study of Mothers' Experiences of their Journeying to Home from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit

Globally, one in ten infants is born preterm. Most preterm infants require care in a level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), which are highly technological critical care environments that can be overwhelming for parents. Alberta Family Integrated Care (AB-FICare™) is an approach to care that provides strategies to integrate parents into their infant’s care team. This sub-study is the first to compare mothers’ experiences in the context of AB-FICare™ and standard care. Semi-structured interviews with mothers from AB-FICare™ (n = 14) and standard care (n = 12) NICUs were analyzed using interpretive description informed by grounded theory methods. We identified a major theme of Journeying to Home with six categories: Recovering from Birth, Adapting to the NICU, Caring for Baby, Coping with Daily Disruption, Seeing Progress, and Supporting Parenting. Mothers in the AB-FICare™ group identified an enhancement to standard care related to building reciprocal trust with healthcare providers that accelerated Journeying to Home.

Mutual trust in infant care: the nurses and mothers experiences

The relationship between healthcare providers and parents of infants in neonatal intensive care unit is based on trust and constitutes a core measure of family-centred care and health. The aim of the present qualitative study was to explore mothers and nurses experiences of trust in one another around the caregiving of the hospitalised infant in intensive neonatal care unit. Focused ethnographic research study conducted through observations and in-depth interviews with 20 mothers and 16 nurses in NICU of Tabriz (Iran) in 2017. Two main themes of 'gradual and fragile trust of mother-to-nurse' (subthemes: Primary trust-mistrust, mother's trust to responsible nurse, mother trust Increase with skilful nurse performance, and vulnerability to trust) and 'gradual and fragile trust of nurse-to-mother' (subthemes: Nurse's initial assessment of trust to mother's readiness to participate, Development of trust to mother, and vulnerability of nurse's trust to mother) were obtained. The present study revealed that mutual trust between the nurse and the mother in the care of the infant was a gradual and progressive process that was achieved over time. Complexities around the care of a hospitalised infant influenced how fragile or vulnerable the trust became between nurse and mother. Findings from this research can be used in supporting increased maternal participation in infant care and improvement of family-centred care in the neonatal intensive care unit.

Continuous and multiple waves of emotional responses: Mother's experience with a premature infant

BACKGROUND

In recent years, there has been a rise in the number of premature births. Mothers of these newborns experience a high degree of stress over time. Since a more comprehensive understanding of this phenomenon can help the healthcare teams in detecting the deficiencies and needs of such newborns' mothers for a better and more effective intervention, the present study was carried out to describe the mothers' experiences in the area of premature birth.

MATERIALS AND METHODS

The present study is a qualitative study with a content analysis approach. The data collection process included 15 semi-structured and in-depth interviews with the mothers delivering premature babies during 2012-2013 in the medical educational centers of north and northwest of Iran. A purposive sampling method was used. All the interviews were recorded, typed, and finally analyzed using a qualitative content analysis with a conventional method.

RESULTS

Data analysis led to the extraction of continuous and multiple waves of emotional responses in mothers with premature birth. This has been revealed in mothers by the different categories of affective reactions, symptoms of anxiety, and mood disturbances including decline in performance, individual shortcomings, and mental irritation.

CONCLUSIONS

Mothers' unpreparedness and unexpected childbirth make them encounter the multiple and continuous waves of emotional responses, which will consequently lead to decline in performance, individual shortcomings, and mental irritation among them. Therefore, in order to prevent the negative and long-term consequences of such reactions, it is recommended that more attention should be given to support these mothers as the main caregivers of such infants.

Breastfeeding twins: a qualitative study

The purpose of this qualitative research was to explore the needs and difficulties of mothers who had multiple babies at Sakarya County by focusing on their breastfeeding experience. Ten mothers who gave birth to multiple infants participated in the study voluntarily. The framework method of data analysis was applied systematically both within and across cases, with categories and themes identified by reading transcripts of interviews. Major themes generated from focus narrative interviews are described. These themes are: willingness of mothers to breastfeed and continue, management of breastfeeding, use of pacifier, daily life, instructions of healthcare personnel, and advices from practice of experienced mothers. This study showed that women were aware of the importance of mother's milk for their babies. They all, somehow, made intensive efforts to breastfeed their twins. Women who expect and/or have multiple babies need much more support and guidance, which may include advice for nutritional and daily care.
