Nematode-Suppressive Potential of Digestates to Meloidogyne incognita and Heterodera schachtii

Management of plant-parasitic nematodes uses host plant resistance, crop rotation, cultural methods, and nematicide applications. Host plant resistance is tedious to develop, and crop rotation and cultural methods are challenging to use. Environmental and human health concerns render sole reliance on chemical nematode suppression nonsustainable. Previously, digestate from anaerobically fermented maize silage suppressed Heterodera schachtii in Beta vulgaris crops. Here, seven digestates were investigated for nematode suppressive potential: liquid dairy manure digestate (LDMD), liquid dairy manure digestate with ammonia removed (LDMDA-), food waste digestate (FWD), liquid food waste digestate with ammonia removed (LFWDA-), liquid food waste digestate (LFWD), food waste hydrolysate from the Renewable Energy Anaerobic Digester (HREAD), and food waste hydrolysate from the South Area Transfer Station in Sacramento (HSATS). In a red radish (Raphanus sativus) bioassay with H. schachtii, digestates were amended at rates of 0.02, 0.11, 0.57, and 2.86 ml per 100 cm3 of soil. At a rate of 2.86 ml, all amendments except LDMDA- and LFWDA- significantly reduced juvenile root penetration compared with the infested control. In a greenhouse watermelon (Citrullus lanatus) bioassay with Meloidogyne incognita, amendments FWD, LFWD, HREAD, and HSATS as well as LDMD (less effectively) at 2.86 and 5.76 ml per 100 cm3 of soil significantly reduced egg masses per root system compared with the nontreated, nematode-infested control. In a microplot experiment with M. incognita and red radish, in the treatment amended with LFWD at 2.37 ml per 100 cm3 of soil, marketable yields were improved by approximately 50% over the nontreated control and were comparable with those in the treatment with the nematicide Reklemel. In a second microplot experiment with M. incognita and watermelon, treatments that contained LFWD at rates of 3.55 ml per 100 cm3 of soil had transient numerical effects of initial nematode suppression that were not maintained throughout the 3-month growth period. The results of these studies demonstrated that digestates FWD and LFWD consistently expressed some nematode-suppressive capacity.

Impact of Wheat on Soybean Cyst Nematode Population Density in Double-Cropping Soybean Production

Double-cropping is defined as producing more than one crop on the same parcel of land in a single growing season. It is reported to have many benefits when incorporated in cropping systems, including improving soil health. In some double-cropping systems, soybean is planted following winter wheat. The soybean cyst nematode (SCN) (Heterodera glycines Ichinohe) is a major soybean pathogen, and several reports suggest suppressive effects of wheat on SCN populations. Field trials were conducted from 2017 to 2018 to investigate the effect of wheat on SCN populations in double-cropping soybean. Nine fields with three levels of initial SCN populations (low, moderate, and high) were selected in Illinois. Wheat was planted in strips alternating with strips-maintained weed-free and under fallow over winter and early spring. Soybean was planted in all strips after wheat harvest. SCN egg densities were acquired at four time points: wheat establishment, post-wheat/pre-soybean, mid-soybean (R1 growth stage or beginning of flowering), and post-soybean harvest. Wheat strips reduced SCN egg densities compared with fallow strips at the R1 stage (-31.8%) and after soybean harvest (-32.7%). Double-cropping soybean with wheat has the potential to suppress SCN field populations and is a system with the potential to provide additional farm income. This study is meant to be a first step toward a better understanding of the mechanisms that govern the suppression of SCN by wheat.

Impacts of Sustained Use of Dairy Manure Slurry and Fertilizers on Populations of Pratylenchus penetrans under Tall Fescue

Various manures and composts have been reported to reduce population densities of plant-parasitic nematodes. Dairy manure slurry is often used as a primary source of nitrogen for forage crops. This study was conducted to determine the effects of dairy manure on population densities of Pratylenchus penetrans parasitizing tall fescue. Beginning in 1994, dairy manure and inorganic fertilizer were applied after each harvest (2 to 4 times/year) at rates of 50 and 100 kg NH-N/ha; control plots were not treated. Nematode populations in soil and roots were determined at 19 sample dates during the fourth (1997), fifth (1998), and sixth (1999) years of manure and fertilizer applications. The sustained use of dairy manure and fertilizer increased population densities of P. penetrans. Our results contrast with many previous studies demonstrating that application of manures decreases population densities of plant-parasitic nematodes. Frequent applications of moderate amounts of manure to a perennial grass crop may have prevented the development of nematode-toxic levels of ammonia or other toxic substances such as nitrous acid or volatile fatty acids. Two years with no additional manure applications were required for P. penetrans population densities to return to levels similar to fertilized or untreated soil.
