Coupling Effect of Structural Lubrication and Thermal Excitation on Phononic Friction

This work investigates the coupling effect of structural lubrication and thermal excitation on phononic friction between black phosphorus (BP) layers. As the rotation angle increases from commensurate to incommensurate states, the friction gradually decreases at any temperature. However, the role of temperature in friction depends on commensurability. For a rotation angle less than 10°, increasing temperature leads to a decrease in friction due to thermal excitation. Conversely, when the rotation angle exceeds 10°, elevated temperature results in an increase in friction due to the effect of thermal collision. At a critical rotation angle of 10°, higher temperatures lead to reduced friction through thermal lubrication at low speeds, and at large speeds, the thermal excitation duration becomes so short that the role of thermal lubrication is weakened, and instead thermal collision dominates. Further research reveals that BP's ability to withstand different maximum speeds is also determined by commensurability. Finally, a method to measure the sliding period length of a rotated tip through an unrotated substrate potential energy topography is proposed and simply verified by using the phonon spectrum.

Ab initiocalculations of the phase diagrams of tin and lead under pressures up to a few TPa

The paper studies relative structural stability for various crystal phases of tin and lead from first principles with the full-potential all-electron full-potential all-electron linear muffin-tin orbital method to pressures of a few TPa both at zero temperature and atT> 0. Using data from our calculations we construct phase diagrams for the two metals in the region of very high compressions and obtain their melting curves. For tin at pressures <100 GPa and zero temperature, we did not find the region of stability of the body-centered orthorhombic (bco) phase, as it was earlier observed in experiments by Salamatet al[2013Phys. Rev.B88104104]. Our calculations suggest that one structural transition from the tetragonal to cubic phase, bct → bcc, occurs in perfect Sn crystal atT= 0 K in the pressure range of about 27-32 GPa. But any deviation from perfection may cause an orthorhombic distortion of its tetragonal phase. At pressures above 100 GPa, the bcc → hexagonal close-packed (hcp) transition exists in both metals, and the phase boundary has a domed shape and does not rise in temperature above 2 kK. This behavior of the phase boundary with the increasing temperature is caused by the softer phonon modes of the bcc structure and the smaller contribution of lattice vibrations to the free energy of the crystal compared to the hcp phase. At pressures above 2.5 TPa andT≲ 1 kK, lead can also undergo another structural transition, hcp → fcc, but atT> 1.5 kK there must exist the more energetically preferable bcc → fcc transition.

Manipulating Localized Vibrations of Interstitial Te for Ultra-High Thermoelectric Efficiency in p-Type Cu-In-Te Systems

Thermoelectric materials are of imperative need on account of the worldwide energy crisis. However, their efficiency is limited by the interplay of high electrical and lower thermal conductivities, that is, the figure of merit (ZT). Owing to their unique crystal structures, Cu-In-Te-based chalcogenides are suitable for both and thus have attracted much attention recently as potential thermoelectrics. Here we explore a newly developed Cu-In-Te derivative compound Cu_3.52In_4.16Te₈. With a proper adjustment of Cu₂Te doping, this material shows an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity (κ_L) (0.3 WK^-1m^-1) and, consequently, a figure of merit (ZT) as high as 1.65(±0.15) at 815 K: the highest value reported for p-type Cu-In-Te to date. The reduction in κ_L is directly related to the alteration of local symmetry around the interstitial Te, resulting in an effectively optimized phonon transport through localized "rattling" of the same. Although the Hall carrier concentration reduces upon Cu₂Te addition due to the unpinning of the Fermi level (E_Fermi) toward the conduction band minimum, the power factor remains stable. The knowledge depicted here not only demonstrates the potential of Cu_3.52In_4.16Te₈-based alloys as a promising TE, but also provides guidelines for developing further high-performance thermoelectric materials by enhancing the electronic conductivity.

Lattice Dynamics Study of Phonon Instability and Thermal Properties of Type-I Clathrate K₈Si46 under High Pressure

For a further understanding of the phase transitions mechanism in type-I silicon clathrates K₈Si₄₆, ab initio self-consistent electronic calculations combined with linear-response method have been performed to investigate the vibrational properties of alkali metal K atoms encapsulated type-I silicon-clathrate under pressure within the framework of density functional perturbation theory. Our lattice dynamics simulation results showed that the pressure induced phase transition of K₈Si₄₆ was believed to be driven by the phonon instability of the calthrate lattice. Analysis of the evolution of the partial phonon density of state with pressure, a legible dynamic picture for both guest K atoms and host lattice, was given. In addition, based on phonon calculations and combined with quasi-harmonic approximation, the specific heat of K₈Si₄₆ was derived, which agreed very well with experimental results. Also, other important thermal properties including the thermal expansion coefficients and Grüneisen parameters of K₈Si₄₆ under different temperature and pressure were also predicted.
