Qualitative and Semi-Quantitative Assessment of Processing-Related Surface Contamination of One- and Two-Piece CAD/CAM Abutments before and after Ultrasonic Cleaning

Manufacturing processes of custom implant abutments may contaminate their surfaces with micro wear deposits and generic pollutants. Such particulate debris, if not removed, might be detrimental and provoke inflammatory reactions in peri-implant tissues. Although regulatory guidelines for adequate cleaning, disinfection, or sterilization exist, there does not appear to be a consistent application and data on the amount and extent of such contaminants is lacking. The aim of the present in vitro study was to evaluate the quality and quantity of processing-related surface contamination of computer-aided design/computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) abutments in the state of delivery and after ultrasonic cleaning. A total of 28 CAD/CAM monotype and hybrid abutments were cleaned and disinfected applying a three-stage ultrasonic protocol (Finevo protocol). Before and after cleaning, the chemical composition and the contamination of the abutments were assessed using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and computer-aided planimetric measurement (CAPM). In the delivery condition, monotype abutments showed a significantly higher amount of debris compared to hybrid abutments (4.86 ± 6.10% vs. 0.03 ± 0.03%, p < 0.001). The polishing process applied in the laboratory after bonding the hybrid abutment components reduces the surface roughness and thus contributes substantially to their purity. The extent of contamination caused by computer-aided manufacturing of custom abutments can be substantially minimized using a three-stage ultrasonic protocol.

Suggestions to Derive Maximum Stocking Densities for Layer Pullets

Simple Summary

The housing of farm animals, such as laying hens and broiler chickens, is regulated by the European Union (EU). However, for young laying hens which are not laying eggs yet, i.e., so-called pullets, no regulation for the number of birds per space is available. We exemplarily calculated maximum stocking densities for pullets based on their body size taking into account the European regulations for adult laying hens and broiler chickens. Our approach is mainly considering that a certain proportion of additional space should be provided to enable the birds to perform active behaviour.

Abstract

Stocking densities for domestic chickens (Gallus gallus domesticus) are regulated by the Council Directives of the European Union for both laying hens and broiler chickens. For layer pullets no regulation of stocking density has been established yet. Based on the existing Council Directives for laying hens (1999/74/EC), broiler chickens (2007/43/EC) and calculations of the floor space that is required for the respective chicken’s body, we exemplarily calculated maximum stocking densities for layer pullets. Based on the calculations we obtained absolute additional spaces for birds of different live body mass classes, i.e., useable floor space that the birds have additionally available to the space covered by their body. This allowed us to calculate the relative additional space per individual. We suggest the relative additional space to be a key parameter to derive requirements for a maximum stocking density in layer pullets. We analysed several scenarios for pullets under consideration of the Council Directives for laying hens and for broiler chickens, coming to the conclusion that layer pullets at the end of their rearing period should be provided ideally with a relative additional space of about 40–60%.

Prediction of anatomical lung volume using planimetric measurements on chest radiographs

BACKGROUND

The anatomical lung volume is conventionally measured by computed tomography (CT). However, chest radiographs could be considered as an alternative method with low cost and low radiation.

PURPOSE

To predict the anatomical lung volume using planimetric measurements of chest radiographs.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

In total, 119 participants (M:F ratio = 66:53; age, 53.7 ± 9.6 years) who underwent chest CT for lung cancer screening were enrolled. The lung volume on CT was measured as a reference for the anatomical lung volume. To eliminate the bias from the degree of inspiration, virtual chest radiographs (posterior-anterior view and lateral view) were generated from the CT images using the thick multiplanar technique, and the lung area (cm(2)) was measured in the right (P), left (Q), and lateral (R) lungs according to the planimetric method. A regression equation predicting the anatomical lung volume from the planimetric measurements was generated. The correlation between the measured and estimated lung volumes was evaluated. The percentage error rate (%) was calculated and the equation was validated internally and externally.

RESULTS

The equation predicting the anatomical lung volume (mL) was 9.6*S-1367, where the summed lung area (S) was defined as (P + Q + R). The measured and estimated lung volumes were highly correlated (R = 0.941, P < 0.001). The absolute error rate was 5.7 ± 4.9%. The root mean square error of the equation was 290.2. The root mean square errors on internal and external validation were 300.4 and 267.0.

CONCLUSION

The anatomical lung volume may be feasibly and accurately predicted from planimetric measurements of chest radiographs.
