Abstract
Background Although immunoglobulin E (IgE) increases significantly in tears and serum during seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC), it is unclear whether tear total IgE can reflect the severity and prognosis of SAC more accurately than serum total IgE. We aimed to investigate the usefulness of measuring the total IgE in tears to evaluate the severity and determine the treatment of SAC. Methods This prospective, nonrandomized study involved 55 patients with SAC and 10 age‐ and sex‐matched healthy controls. Serum and tears were collected before and after treatment to analyze the total IgE. SAC patients received the same topical anti‐allergy treatment and were followed‐up every 2 weeks for 1 month. The relationship of tear and serum total IgE concentrations with pollen concentrations and symptom severity before and after treatment was assessed. Results The total IgE concentration in tears was higher in SAC patients than in healthy participants with significant correlations between tear and serum total IgE concentrations. The total IgE concentration in tears, but not in serum, correlated with the pollen concentration and severity of ocular symptoms and reactions in SAC. Treatment‐associated improvements in symptoms and reactions in SAC correlated with decreased concentrations of the tear total IgE. Patients with disease recurrence following treatment demonstrated significantly higher tear total IgE concentrations than patients with no recurrence. Conclusion The total tear IgE level can indicate the severity and predict the prognosis of SAC more accurately than the serum total IgE.

Abstract
Aims To investigate consequences of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) on the ocular anterior and posterior segment parameters. Materials and Methods Forty healthy participants (mean age: 25.90 ± 5.7 years, 20 females, 20 males) and 40 patients with SAC (mean age: 26.20 ± 5.7 years, 20 females, 20 males) were included in this prospective study. The anterior segment parameters including central corneal thickness (CCT) and anterior chamber depth (ACD) were measured by Scheimpflug imaging system. Axial length (AL) was measured by optical biometry. The posterior segment parameters, including retinal nerve fiber layer (RNFL), subfoveal choroidal thickness, and central macular thickness were measured by optical coherence tomography. Results Similar values of the ACD, AL, RNFL as well as central macular thickness between healthy participants and patients with SAC were revealed. Despite the CCT being thinner in SAC, there was no statistically significant difference between the two groups. On the other hand, SAC was found to be associated with an increase in subfoveal choroidal thickness, the condition of which may be attributed to the inflammatory nature of the disease. Conclusion The present study has managed to demonstrate non-significant alterations in the ocular anterior and posterior segment parameters of patients with SAC. Yet, the increase in subfoveal choroidal thickness may be linked to the accompanying inflammation of both the conjunctiva and other ocular tissues, particularly the choroidal layer.

Abstract
Purpose: To study the tolerability and efficacy of two formulations of topical ketotifen ophthalmic solutions for the treatment of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC).Methods: 81 active SAC patients were treated with either ketotifen 0.025% or 0.05% eye drops for 3 weeks. Allergic signs and symptoms were evaluated at baseline (V0), after 7 (V1) and 21 days (V2). Drugs tolerability and ratings of global efficacy were recorded.Results: Both concentrations of ketotifen were highly effective. The total signs and symptoms scores (TSSS) were significantly better reduced by ketotifen 0.025% compared to 0.05% at both V1 and V2 (p < 0.001). Ketotifen 0.025% was better tolerated than 0.05% at the first instillation and at days 2, 4, and 6 (p < 0.0001), and had a better responder rate (p < 0.001) according to the patient's and investigator's assessments.Conclusions: Ketotifen 0.025% was more effective and better tolerated than 0.05% in SAC.

Abstract
AIM To analyze the possible risk factors in the development of seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) through an evaluation of skin allergy tests and data obtained from questionnaires. METHODS The study included a total of 75 SAC patients and 71 control subjects without SAC diagnosis who were admitted to the Abant Izzet Baysal University Medical Faculty Ophthalmology Clinic between March 2016 and December 2016. Skin prick tests were performed for all participants. Serum levels of total IgE and 25-OH vitamin D were also measured. In the tear, total IgE levels were measured. Moreover, possible risk factors for the onset of SAC (smoking, paracetamol exposure, vitamin D supplementation and environmental factors etc.) were examined for all patients by both prenatal and postnatal aspects. RESULTS The patients with SAC were found to have a history of maternal paracetamol exposure during the prenatal period. Likewise, in the same patient group, the duration of postnatal vitamin D supplementation was shorter (P<0.001). However, no significant correlation was found between SAC and maternal antibiotic exposure, maternal smoking, the mode of delivery and birth weight, as well as presence of pets. Moreover, patients with SAC were more likely to have asthma, allergic rhinitis and oral allergy syndrome. We have also found that SAC patients' mothers and siblings were more likely to have allergic conjunctivitis. Likewise, their fathers were more likely to have allergic rhinitis. CONCLUSION Prenatal maternal paracetamol exposure and shorter duration of vitamin D supplementation in the postnatal period may play a role in development of SAC. Therefore prevention of unnecessary gestational paracetamol intake and vitamin D supplementation during infancy could potentially reduce the onset and development of SAC.

Abstract
Purpose To evaluate the efficacy and safety of 0.05% epinastine and 0.1% olopatadine eye drop preparations as seasonal and preseasonal treatments in patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC). Subjects and methods This was a prospective, randomized, case-control study involving two institutions. The subjects were patients diagnosed with SAC at two institutions between February and March in 2014. To examine the clinical effects of seasonal treatment, 0.05% epinastine and 0.1% olopatadine were administered, and their effects were investigated every 2 weeks (Stage 1). To evaluate the clinical effects of preseasonal therapy, in January 2015, the same eye drop preparations as adopted in Stage 1 were administered to patients who had participated in Stage 1 and provided consent to participate in this study, and their effects were investigated every month (Stage 2). Results In Stage 1, the 0.05% epinastine group consisted of 43 patients, and the 0.1% olopatadine group consisted of 42 patients. There were significant improvements in the total symptom and objective finding scores at each time point after administration in comparison with those before its baseline, but there were no significant differences between the two groups. In Stage 2, the 0.05% epinastine group consisted of 15 patients, and the 0.1% olopatadine group consisted of 14 patients. The rate of change in the total symptom score in comparison with that at the baseline of preseasonal treatment was significantly higher in the 0.1% olopatadine group 1 month after the start of treatment, suggesting symptom deterioration (P=0.025). There was no significant difference in the rate of change in the total objective finding score between the two groups. Conclusion Seasonal treatment with 0.05% epinastine or 0.1% olopatadine was equally effective for patients with allergic conjunctivitis. However, for preseasonal therapy, 0.05% epinastine was more effective than 0.1% olopatadine.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To evaluate oxidative stress parameters and serum magnesium (Mg) levels in patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC) during the pollen season. METHODS This observational cross-sectional study involved 35 patients with SAC without any other ocular and systemic diseases, and 38 consecutive, age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Serum malondialdehyde (MDA), adjusted ischemia modified albumin (IMA), and Mg levels were quantified, and the results were compared between the groups. RESULTS No significant differences were found between the groups with respect to age (p = 0.416) and sex (p = 0.362). Serum MDA and adjusted IMA levels of the subjects with SAC (69.54 ± 7.71 μM and 0.74 ± 0.39 ABSU) were significantly higher than the control group (64.61 ± 5.89 μM and 0.57 ± 0.19 ABSU) (p = 0.002 and p = 0.025, respectively). There was no significant difference for serum Mg levels between the groups (p = 0.177). CONCLUSION We demonstrated higher levels of oxidative stress parameters in patients with SAC compared to the control group, which imply a possible role of oxidative stress in the pathogenesis of SAC.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum total immunoglobulin E (IgE) levels in patients with seasonal allergic conjunctivitis (SAC). METHODS This observational case-control study involved 49 patients with SAC without any other ocular and systemic diseases, and 44 consecutive, age- and sex-matched healthy subjects. Plasma 25-hydroxyvitamin D and serum total IgE levels of all subjects were quantified with electrochemiluminescence technique. Results were compared between the groups, and p values of <0.05 were considered as statistically significant. RESULTS No significant differences were found between the groups with respect to age (p = 0.41) and sex (p = 0.98). Plasma vitamin D levels of the subjects with SAC (median 8.03 ng/ml, range 3.00-17.97 ng/ml) were significantly lower than the control group (median 10.52 ng/ml, range 3.30-25.92 ng/ml) (p = 0.007). Serum total IgE levels of patients with SAC (median 48.65 IU/ml, range 1.77-812.00 IU/ml) were significantly higher when compared to the control group (median 32.49 IU/ml, range 0.14-104.60 IU/ml) (p = 0.003). CONCLUSIONS We found lower plasma vitamin D levels and higher serum total IgE levels in patients with SAC.
