Bioinspired Self-Standing, Self-Floating 3D Solar Evaporators Breaking the Trade-Off between Salt Cycle and Heat Localization for Continuous Seawater Desalination

Facing the global water shortage challenge, solar-driven desalination is considered a sustainable technology to obtain freshwater from seawater. However, the trade-off between the salt cycle and heat localization of existing solar evaporators (SE) hinders its further practical applications. Here, inspired by water hyacinth, a self-standing and self-floating 3D SE with adiabatic foam particles and aligned water channels is built through a continuous directional freeze-casting technique. With the help of the heat insulation effect of foam particles and the efficient water transport of aligned water channels, this new SE can cut off the heat transfer from the top photothermal area to the bulk water without affecting the water supply, breaking the long-standing trade-off between salt cycle and heat localization of traditional SEs. Additionally, its self-standing and self-floating features can reduce human maintenance. Its large exposure height can increase evaporation area and collect environmental energy, breaking the long-standing limitation of solar-to-vapor efficiency of conventional SEs. With the novel structure employed, an evaporation flux of 2.25 kg m^-2 h^-1 , and apparent solar-to-vapor efficiency of 136.7% are achieved under 1 sun illumination. This work demonstrates a new evaporator structure, and also provides a key insight into the structural design of next-generation salt-tolerant and high-efficiency SEs.

Enhanced Contactless Salt-Collecting Solar Desalination

Solar desalination is expected to solve the problem of global water shortage. Yet its stability is plagued by salt accumulation. Here, a paper-based thermal radiation-enabled evaporation system (TREES) is demonstrated to achieve sustainable and highly efficient salt-collecting desalination, featuring a dynamic evaporation front based on the accumulated salt layer where water serves as its own absorber via energy down-conversion. When processing 7 wt % brine, it continuously evaporates water at a high rate─2.25 L m-2 h-1 under 1 sun illumination─which is well beyond the input solar energy limit for over 366 h. It is revealed that such enhanced evaporation arises from the unique vertical evaporation wall of the paper-TREES, which captures the thermal energy from the heated bottom efficiently and gains extra energy from the warmer environment. These findings provide novel insights into the design of next-generation salt-harvesting solar evaporators and take a step further to advance their applications in green desalination.

3D Printing a Biomimetic Bridge-Arch Solar Evaporator for Eliminating Salt Accumulation with Desalination and Agricultural Applications

Solar-driven water evaporation has been considered a sustainable method to obtain clean water through desalination. However, its further application is limited by the complicated preparation strategy, poor salt rejection, and durability. Herein, inspired by superfast water transportation of the Nepenthes alata peristome surface and continuous bridge-arch design in architecture, a biomimetic 3D bridge-arch solar evaporator is proposed to induce Marangoni flow for long-term salt rejection. The formed double-layer 3D liquid film on the evaporator is composed of a confined water film for water supplementation and a free-flowing water film with ultrafast directional Marangoni convection for salt rejection, which functions cooperatively to endow the 3D evaporator with all-in-one function including superior solar-driven water evaporation (1.64 kg m^-2 h^-1 , 91% efficiency for pure water), efficient solar desalination, and long-term salt-rejecting property (continuous 200 h in 10 wt% saline water) without any post-cleaning treatment. The design principle of the 3D structures is provided for extending the application of Marangoni-driven salt rejection and the investigation of structure-design-induced liquid film control in the solar desalination field. Furthermore, excellent mechanical and chemical stability is proved, where a self-sustainable and solar-powered desalination-cultivation platform is developed, indicating promising application for agricultural cultivation.

Cellulose Nanomaterials in Interfacial Evaporators for Desalination: A "Natural" Choice

Herein, the recent advances in realizing highly efficient cellulose-based solar evaporators for alleviating the global water crisis are summarized. Fresh water scarcity is one of the most threatening issues for sustainable development. Solar steam generation, which harnesses the abundant sunlight, has been recognized as a sustainable approach to harvest fresh water. In contrast to synthetic polymeric materials that can pose serious negative environmental impacts, cellulose-based materials, owing to their biocompatibility, renewability, and sustainability, are highly attractive for realizing solar steam generators. The molecular and macromolecular features of cellulose and the physicochemical properties of extracted cellulose nanoparticles (cellulose nanocrystals and cellulose nanofibrils (CNF)) and natural cellulose materials (wood and bacterial nanocellulose (BNC)) that make them attractive as supporting substrate materials in solar steam generators are briefly discussed. Recent progress in designing highly efficient cellulose-based solar evaporators, including utilizing extracted cellulose nanoparticles via bottom-up assembly CNF, natural cellulose materials with intrinsic hierarchical structure (wood and BNC), and commercial planar cellulose substrates (air-laid paper, cellulose paper, and cotton fabric) is reviewed. The outstanding challenges that need to be addressed for these materials and devices to be utilized in the real-world and in overcoming global water crisis are also briefly highlighted.
