Sc@B28-, Ti@B28, V@B28+, and V@B292-: Spherically Aromatic Endohedral Seashell-like Metallo-Borospherenes

Transition-metal-doped boron nanoclusters exhibit unique structures and bonding in chemistry. Using the experimentally observed seashell-like borospherenes C₂ B₂₈^-/0 and C_s B₂₉^- as ligands and based on extensive first-principles theory calculations, we predict herein a series of novel transition-metal-centered endohedral seashell-like metallo-borospherenes C₂ Sc@B₂₈^- (1), C₂ Ti@B₂₈ (2), C₂ V@B₂₈⁺ (3), and C_s V@B₂₉^2- (4) which, as the global minima of the complex systems, turn out to be the boron analogues of dibenzenechromium D_6h Cr(C₆H₆)₂ with two B₁₂ ligands on the top and bottom interconnected by four or five corner boron atoms on the waist and one transition-metal "pearl" sandwiched at the center in between. Detailed molecular orbital, adaptive natural density partitioning (AdNDP), and iso-chemical shielding surface (ICSS) analyses indicate that, similar to Cr(C₆H₆)₂, these endohedral seashell-like complexes follow the 18-electron rule in bonding patterns (1S²1P⁶1D¹⁰), rendering spherical aromaticity and extra stability to the systems.

Spherical Aromaticity of Tetrahedral Pnictogens through Off-Nucleus Isotropic Magnetic Shielding

This work revealed the spherical aromaticity of some inorganic E₄ cages and their protonated E₄ H⁺ ions (E=N, P, As, Sb, and Bi). For this purpose, we employed several evaluations like (0D-1D) nucleus independent chemical shift (NICS), multidimensional (2D-3D) off-nucleus isotropic shielding σ_iso (r), and natural bond orbital (NBO) analysis. The magnetic calculations involved gauge-including atomic orbitals (GIAO) with two density functionals B3LYP and WB97XD, and basis sets of Jorge-ATZP, 6-311+G(d,p), and Lanl2DZp. The Jorge-ATZP basis set showed the best consistency. Our findings disclosed non-classical aromatic characters in the above molecules, which decreased from N to Bi cages. Also, the results showed more aromaticity in E₄ than E₄ H⁺ . The NBO analysis attributed the aromaticity in the above molecules to the residual density of the overlapping σ-bonding orbitals. So, the aromaticity in these molecules is unlike the classical aromaticity that is associated with electron delocalization. Scanning 1D σ_iso (r) variation along E-E bonds indicated a lowering in the shielding trend from N to Bi cages. The 3D results showed a similar decrease in the relative volumetric diffusion of the magnetic activity, whereas the volumetric ratio of V_1ppm /V_2ppm is almost constant for all the E₄ cages.

Effect of Alkali Metal Atoms Doping on Structural and Nonlinear Optical Properties of the Gold-Germanium Bimetallic Clusters

A new series of alkali-based complexes, AM@Ge_nAu (AM = Li, Na, and K), have been theoretically designed and investigated by means of the density functional theory calculations. The geometric structures and electronic properties of the species are systematically analyzed. The adsorption of alkali metals maintains the structural framework of the gold-germanium bimetallic clusters, and the alkali metals prefer energetically to be attached on clusters’ surfaces or edges. The high chemical stability of Li@Ge₁₂Au is revealed by the spherical aromaticity, the hybridization between the Ge atoms and Au-4d states, and delocalized multi-center bonds, as well as large binding energies. The static first hyperpolarizability (β_tot) is related to the cluster size and geometric structure, and the AM@Ge_nAu (AM = Na and K) clusters exhibit the much larger β_tot values up to 13050 a.u., which are considerable to establish their strong nonlinear optical (NLO) behaviors. We hope that this study will promote further application of alkali metals-adsorbed germanium-based semiconductor materials, serving for the design of remarkable and tunable NLO materials.
