Infraspecific Variation in Silene Seed Tubercles

The seeds of many species in the order Caryophyllales exhibit surface protuberances called tubercles. While tubercle shape and distribution have often been proposed as taxonomic criteria, paradoxically, their description has primarily relied on adjectives, with quantitative data on tubercle width, height, and other measurements lacking in the literature. Recently, a quantitative analysis of seed surface tubercles based on tubercle width, height, and curvature values (maximum and average curvature, and maximum to average curvature ratio) was proposed and applied to individual populations of a total of 31 species, with 12 belonging to Silene subg. Behenantha and 19 to S. subg. Silene. Tubercles were classified into two categories: echinate and rugose. Echinate tubercles exhibited higher values of height and curvature, and lower width, and were more prevalent in species of S. subg. Behenantha, while the rugose type was more abundant in S. subg. Silene. This work explored infraspecific differences in tubercle size and shape. For this, measurements of tubercle width, height and curvature were applied to 31 populations of eight species of Silene. Significant differences between populations were observed for most of the species examined. A particular tubercle type, previously described as umbonate or mammillate, was identified in S. nocturna seeds, characterized by high curvature values.

Controlled Release of Felodipine from 3D-Printed Tablets with Constant Surface Area: Influence of Surface Geometry

In this study, 3D-printed tablets with a constant surface area were designed and fabricated using polylactic acid (PLA) in the outer compartment and polyvinyl alcohol and felodipine (FDP) in the inner compartment. The influences of different surface geometries of the inner compartment, namely, round, hexagon, square, and triangle, on drug release from 3D-printed tablets were also studied. The morphology and porosity of the inner compartment were determined using scanning electron microscopy and synchrotron radiation X-ray tomographic microscopy, respectively. Additionally, drug content and drug release were also evaluated. The results revealed that the round-shaped geometry seemed to have the greatest total surface area of the inner compartment, followed by square-shaped, hexagon-shaped, and triangle-shaped geometries. FDP-loaded 3D-printed tablets with triangle and hexagon surface geometries had the slowest drug release (about 80% within 24 h). In the round-shaped and square-shaped 3D-printed tablets, complete drug release was observed within 12 h. Furthermore, the drug release from triangle-shaped 3D-printed tablets with double the volume of the inner compartment was faster than that of a smaller volume. This was due to the fact that a larger tablet volume increased the surface area contacting the medium, resulting in a faster drug release. The findings indicated that the surface geometry of 3D-printed tablets with a constant surface area affected drug release. This study suggests that 3D printing technology may be used to develop oral solid dosage forms suitable for customized therapeutic treatments.

Nano X-ray Tomography Application for Quantitative Surface Layer Geometry Analysis after Laser Beam Modification

Analysis of the geometrical structure of the surface of materials is an issue already widely recognised and included in international standards. The authors present the possibilities of extending the analysis of the coatings' geometrical structure through X-ray nanotomography imaging, three-dimensional image processing, and stereological methods. Analysis of the state of the art reveals that there are no scientific rapports (indexed by Scopus) on the application X-ray nanotomography for analysis of the geometry of a coating. The presented study shows that this imaging technique can be applied and provide additional information on the quality of the layer. The comparative tests were carried out on samples with a cermet coating before and after laser treatment, including standard tests of the surface geometry and the analysis of three-dimensional images obtained from nanotomography. A set of parameters describing the compactness and thickness distribution of the applied coating is proposed, which facilitates the qualitative assessment of the application process and improvements through the additional processing of technological layers. The obtained results show that although the average thickness values before and after laser treatment did not differ significantly, their distribution on the sample surface was different, as presented in the visualisation. The determined stereological parameter N_V (number of objects per unit volume) allowed for the assessment of the layer compactness, and as the analyses showed, this value decreased by more than two times after laser treatment. The analysis of the degree of sample coverage by the cermet layer showed that it increased from 70% to 95% after laser treatment, which confirms the treatment's positive effect on the layer's quality. This research shows that three-dimensional analysis significantly enriches the information about the geometry of the surface layer, providing data which other research techniques are unable to acquire.

Elucidation of the reduced oil uptake of frying batters made from wheat and brown rice flour blends in terms of rheology and surface roughness

BACKGROUND

Negative impressions toward fried foods are prevalent due to their high oil absorption and caloric values. A great deal of effort has been thus made to reduce the oil uptake of fried foods. In this study, the effect of wheat and brown rice flour blends on the oil uptake of frying batters was elucidated in terms of rheology and surface roughness.

RESULTS

The blends with higher proportions of brown rice flour had higher values of pasting parameters and also exhibited a more elastic nature. When a food matrix was deep-fat-fried with frying batters made from wheat and brown rice flour blends, the oil uptake was significantly reduced by 28% compared to wheat flour batter. Based on imaging analysis, the surface properties of the fried crusts were quantitatively measured, demonstrating that the degree of surface roughness distinctly became lower with increasing levels of brown rice flour. Furthermore, the surface roughness parameters (R_a and R_q ) had a strong relationship with the reduced oil uptake. Also, a high proportion of brown rice flour in the blends produced fried samples with a firmer and crispy texture.

CONCLUSIONS

A reduced oil uptake of batter-coated fried foods was distinctly observed with increasing levels of brown rice flour in the blends and well correlated with the degree of surface roughness (R²  > 0.85). © 2021 Society of Chemical Industry.

DFT and TD-DFT Investigation of a Charge Transfer Surface Resonance Raman Model of N3 Dye Bound to a Small TiO2 Nanoparticle

Raman spectroscopy is an important method for studying the configuration of Ru bipyridyl dyes on TiO₂. We studied the [Ru(II)(4,4′-COOH-2,2′-bpy)2(NCS)2)] dye (N3) adsorbed on a (TiO₂)5 nanoparticle using Density Functional Theory, DFT, to optimize the geometry of the complex and to simulate normal Raman scattering, NRS, for the isolated N3 and the N3–(TiO₂)5 complex. Two configurations of N3 are found on the surface both anchored with a carboxylate bridging bidentate linkage but one with the two NCS ligands directed away from the surface and one with one NSC tilted away and the other NCS interacting with the surface. Both configurations also had another –COOH group hydrogen bonded to a Ti-O dangling bond. These configurations can be distinguished from each other by Raman bands at 2104 and 2165 cm⁻¹. The former configuration has more intense Normal Raman Scattering, NRS, on TiO₂ surfaces and was studied with Time-Dependent Density Functional Theory, TD-DFT, frequency-dependent Raman simulations. Pre-resonance Raman spectra were simulated for a Metal to Ligand Charge Transfer, MLCT, excited state and for a long-distance CT transition from N3 directly to (TiO₂)5. Enhancement factors for the MLCT and long-distance CT processes are around 1 × 103 and 2 × 102, respectively. A Herzberg–Teller intensity borrowing mechanism is implicated in the latter and provides a possible mechanism for the photo-injection of electrons to titania surfaces.

The joint role of geometry and illumination on material recognition

Observing and recognizing materials is a fundamental part of our daily life. Under typical viewing conditions, we are capable of effortlessly identifying the objects that surround us and recognizing the materials they are made of. Nevertheless, understanding the underlying perceptual processes that take place to accurately discern the visual properties of an object is a long-standing problem. In this work, we perform a comprehensive and systematic analysis of how the interplay of geometry, illumination, and their spatial frequencies affects human performance on material recognition tasks. We carry out large-scale behavioral experiments where participants are asked to recognize different reference materials among a pool of candidate samples. In the different experiments, we carefully sample the information in the frequency domain of the stimuli. From our analysis, we find significant first-order interactions between the geometry and the illumination, of both the reference and the candidates. In addition, we observe that simple image statistics and higher-order image histograms do not correlate with human performance. Therefore, we perform a high-level comparison of highly nonlinear statistics by training a deep neural network on material recognition tasks. Our results show that such models can accurately classify materials, which suggests that they are capable of defining a meaningful representation of material appearance from labeled proximal image data. Last, we find preliminary evidence that these highly nonlinear models and humans may use similar high-level factors for material recognition tasks.

Femtosecond Laser Micro-/Nano-Texturing of Stainless Steels for Surface Property Control

Surface geometry has had an influence on the surface property, in addition to the intrinsic surface energy, of materials. Many physical surface modification methods had been proposed to control the solid surface geometry for modification of surface properties. Recently, short-pulse lasers were utilized to perform nano-texturing onto metallic and polymer substrates for the improvement of surface properties. Most of the papers reported that the hydrophilic metallic surface was modified to have a higher contact angle than 120–150°. Little studies explained the relationship between surface geometry and surface properties. In the present study, the laser micro-/nano-texturing was developed to describe this surface-geometric effect on the static contact angles for pure water. Micropatterns with multi spatial frequencies are designed and synthesized into a microtexture. This tailored microtexture was utilized to prepare for computer aided machining (CAM) data to control the femtosecond laser beams. The nano-length ripples by laser induced periodic surface structuring (LIPSS) supposed onto this microtexture to form the micro-/nano-texture on the AISI304 substrate surface. Computational geometry was employed to describe this geometric profile. The fractal dimension became nearly constant by 2.26 and insensitive to increase of static contact angle (θ) for θ > 150°. Under this defined self-similarity, the micro-/nano-textured surface state was controlled to be super-hydrophobic by increasing the ratio of the highest spatial frequency in microtextures to the lowest one. This controllability of surface property on the stainless steels was supported by tailoring the wavelength and pitch of microtextures. Exposure testing was also used to evaluate the engineering durability of this micro-/nano-textured surface. Little change of the measured fractal dimension during the testing proved that this physically modified AISI304 surface had sufficient stability for its long-term usage in air.

Analysis of Surface Geometry Changes after Hybrid Milling and Burnishing by Ceramic Ball

The production of modern machines requires parts with much greater geometric accuracy and surface geometry (SG) precision than several years ago. These requirements are met by so-called hybrid technologies that must simultaneously be inexpensive to implement. The integration of treatment procedures (usually in one operation) is geared towards achieving a synergistic effect. Combining different treatments from various technologies produces synergy, i.e., benefits greater than the optimization of each individual process done separately. This paper presents experimental results and numerical experiment data on surface plastic deformation. The hybrid technology used in the study was a combination of milling and finishing with plastic burnishing using a ceramic ball. These processes were integrated on a multi-axis CNC machining center. The plastic deformations of real surfaces were determined in simulations. The paper also discusses the structure of the model and how to use it to conduct a finite element method (FEM) computer simulation. The aim of the study was to determine how to use the potential developed model of hybrid treatment to predict the surface performance expressed by the amplitude, volume, and functional parameters of the surface geometry, with the EN-ISO 25178-2 profile.

Comparison of Computed Tomography Articular Surface Geometry of Male Versus Female Thumb Carpometacarpal Joints

BACKGROUND

Given the predilection of first carpometacarpal (CMC) joint osteoarthritis in women compared with men, we aim to determine the differences in first CMC joint surface geometry and congruence between young healthy males and females.

METHODS

Wrist computed tomographic scan data of 11 men and 11 women aged 20 to 35 years were imported into 3-dimensional software programs. The first metacarpal and the trapezium were aligned in a standardized position according to landmarks at key points on Gaussian and maximum curvature maps. Measurements of joint congruence and surface geometry were analyzed, including joint space volume, distance between the bones at the articular surface edges, area of the joint space, and radii of curvature in the radial-ulnar and volar-dorsal planes.

RESULTS

The mean thumb CMC articular space volume was 104.02 ± 30.96 mm³ for females and 138.63 ± 50.36 mm³ for males. The mean first metacarpal articular surface area was 144.9 ± 10.9 mm² for females and 175.4 ± 25.3 mm² for males. After normalizing for size, the mean thumb CMC articular space volume was 119.4 ± 24.6 mm³ for females and 117.86 ± 28.5 mm³ for males. There was also no significant difference for the articular space volume, articular surface distances, articular space, and mean radii of curvatures.

CONCLUSIONS

This study found that there are sex differences in the first CMC joint articular volume without normalizing for size; however, there are no sex differences in first CMC joint articular volume, curvature characteristics, or joint congruence of young, healthy patients after normalizing for joint size.
