Composition, processing, and properties of biphasic zirconia bioceramics: relationship to competing strength and optical properties

A study is made of relationships between composition, processing, structure and properties of biphasic zirconia bioceramics. The focus is on zirconia compositions with different yttria dopant contents used in modern dental restorations, namely 3 - 5 mol% yttria stabilized zirconia (3YSZ, 4YSZ, and 5YSZ). Crystallographies and densities are surveyed, sintering conditions examined, and microstructures characterized. Strength and optical tests are conducted on each YSZ, and dependencies on sintering temperature, cubic content and grain size analyzed. Strength correlates with the amount of tetragonal zirconia (t-ZrO2) crystals with large lattice distortions (tetragonality). YSZ translucency correlates with content of cubic zirconia (c-ZrO2) and t-ZrO2 with low levels of tetragonality. Consistent with literature reporting, the materials rank in decreasing order 3YSZ, 4YSZ to 5YSZ for strength but increasing order for translucency. However, for a given composition, the data suggest that the strengths of densely sintered 3YSZ and 4YSZ actually increase with translucency, although that of 5YSZ remains undiminished. These trends are in apparent contradiction to prevailing experience, and offer potential future processing routes to optimization of clinical materials.

Transformation of Thermal Expansion from Large Volume Contraction to Nonlinear Strong Negative Thermal Expansion in PbTiO3-Bi(Co1-xFex)O3 Perovskites

Controlling negative thermal expansion (NTE) is an important topic in the study of NTE materials. Generally, a large magnitude of NTE with a wide NTE operation temperature window is preferable for applications of NTE materials, as a stronger NTE can be used to tailor the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE) of materials with positive thermal expansion by forming composites more efficiently. However, controlling the NTE in single-phase materials is still a significant challenge. In present study, we proposed a promising method to control the thermal expansion from large volume contraction in a limited temperature widow (x = 0, ΔV = -4.8%, 675-700 °C) to a nonlinear strong NTE over a wider temperature range (x = 0.8, α̅V = -6.12 × 10-5/°C, RT to 600 °C) by means of adjusting the proportion of cations with different ferroelectric activities in 0.5PbTiO3-0.5Bi(Co1-xFex)O3 ferroelectrics. The obtained NTE was stronger than many of the currently available NTE materials, and the operation window of NTE was also in an extended temperature range. The unusual transformation is well explained by the spontaneous volume ferroelectrostriction effect, which was evidenced by joint experimental and theoretical studies. The present work not only may pave the way for controllable large NTE in PbTiO3-based ferroelectrics but also could be extended to magnetic NTE materials, whose NTE is coupled with magnetism.

Phase determination in dual phase steels via HREBSD-based tetragonality mapping

Electron Backscatter Diffraction (EBSD) is a widely used approach for characterising the microstructure of various materials. However, it is difficult to accurately distinguish similar (body centred cubic and body centred tetragonal, with small tetragonality) phases in steels using standard EBSD software. One method to tackle the problem of phase distinction is to measure the tetragonality of the phases, which can be done using simulated patterns and cross-correlation techniques to detect distortion away from a perfectly cubic crystal lattice. However, small errors in the determination of microscope geometry (the so-called pattern or projection centre) can cause significant errors in tetragonality measurement and lead to erroneous results. This paper utilises a new approach for accurate pattern centre determination via a strain minimisation routine across a large number of grains in dual phase steels. Tetragonality maps are then produced and used to identify phase and estimate local carbon content. The technique is implemented using both kinetically simulated and dynamically simulated patterns to determine their relative accuracy. Tetragonality maps, and subsequent phase maps, based on dynamically simulated patterns in a point-by-point and grain average comparison are found to consistently produce more precise and accurate results, with close to 90% accuracy for grain phase identification, when compared with an image-quality identification method. The error in tetragonality measurements appears to be of the order of 1%, thus producing a commensurate ∼0.2% error in carbon content estimation. Such an error makes the technique unsuitable for estimation of total carbon content of most commercial steels, which often have carbon levels below 0.1%. However, even in the DP steel for this study (0.1 wt.% carbon) it can be used to map carbon in regions with higher accumulation (such as in martensite with nonhomogeneous carbon content). A Glance at Processing-Microstructure-Property Relationships for Magnetoelectric Particulate PZT-CFO Composites

In this work, we investigated the processing-microstructure-property relationships for magnetoelectric (ME) particulate composites consisting of hard ferromagnetic CoFe₂O₄ (CFO) particles dispersed in a Nb-doped PbZr_xTi_1-xO₃ (PZT) soft ferroelectric matrix. Several preparation steps, namely PZT powder calcination, PZT-CFO mixture milling and composite sintering were tailored and a range of microstructures was obtained. These included open and closed porosities up to full densification, PZT matrices with decreasing grain size across the submicron range down to the nanoscale and well dispersed CFO particles with bimodal size distributions consisting of submicron and micron sized components with varying weights. All samples could be poled under a fixed DC electric field of 4 kV/mm and the dielectric, piezoelectric and elastic coefficients were obtained and are discussed in relation to the microstructure. Remarkably, materials with nanostructured PZT matrices and open porosity showed piezoelectric charge coefficients comparable with fully dense composites with coarsened microstructure and larger voltage coefficients. Besides, the piezoelectric response of dense materials increased with the size of the CFO particles. This suggests a role of the conductive magnetic inclusions in promoting poling. Magnetoelectric coefficients were obtained and are discussed in relation to densification, piezoelectric matrix microstructure and particle size of the magnetic component. The largest magnetoelectric coefficient α₃₃ of 1.37 mV cm^-1 Oe^-1 was obtained for submicron sized CFO particles, when closed porosity was reached, even if PZT grain size remained in the nanoscale.
