Catalytic Multilayers for Efficient Solar Water Oxidation through Catalyst Loading and Surface-State Passivation of BiVO4 Photoanodes

We studied the kinetics of photoelectrochemical (PEC) water oxidation using a model photoanode BiVO₄ modified with various water oxidation catalysts (WOCs) by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. In particular, we prepared BiVO₄ photoanodes with catalytic multilayers (CMs), where cationic polyelectrolytes and anionic polyoxometalate (POM) WOCs were assembled in a desired amount at a nanoscale precision, and compared their performance with those with well-known WOCs such as cobalt phosphate (CoPi) and NiOOH. Our comparative kinetics analysis suggested that the deposition of the CMs improved the kinetics of both the photogenerated charge carrier separation/transport in bulk BiVO₄ due to passivation of surface recombination centers and water oxidation at the electrode/electrolyte interface due to deposition of efficient molecular WOCs. On the contrary, the conventional WOCs were mostly effective in the former and less effective in the latter, which is consistent with previous reports. These findings explain why the CMs exhibit an outstanding performance. We also found that separated charge carriers can be efficiently transported to POM WOCs via a hopping mechanism due to the delicate architecture of the CMs, which is reminiscent of natural photosynthetic systems. We believe that this study can not only broaden our understanding on the underlying mechanism of PEC water oxidation but also provide insights for the design and fabrication of novel electrochemical and PEC devices, including efficient water oxidation photoanodes.

Cooperative Catalytic Effect of ZrO2 and α-Fe2 O3 Nanoparticles on BiVO4 Photoanodes for Enhanced Photoelectrochemical Water Splitting

Photoelectrochemical water splitting with metal oxide semiconductors offers a cost-competitive alternative for the generation of solar fuels. Most of the materials studied so far suffer from poor charge-transfer kinetics at the semiconductor/liquid interface, making compulsory the use of catalytic layers to overcome the large overpotentials required for the water oxidation reaction. Herein, we report a very soft electrolytic synthesis deposition method, which allows remarkably enhanced water oxidation kinetics of BiVO₄ photoanodes by the sequential addition of Zr and Fe precursors. Upon a heat treatment cycle, these precursors are converted into monoclinic ZrO₂ and α-Fe₂ O₃ nanoparticles, which mainly act as catalysts, leading to a five-fold increase of the water oxidation photocurrent of BiVO₄ . This method provides a versatile platform that is easy to apply to different semiconductor materials, fully reproducible, and facile to scale-up on large area conductive substrates with attractive implications for technological deployment.

Improved Photoelectrocatalytic Performance for Water Oxidation by Earth-Abundant Cobalt Molecular Porphyrin Complex-Integrated BiVO4 Photoanode

An earth-abundant, low-cost cobalt porphyrin complex (CoTCPP) is designed as a molecular catalyst to work on three-dimensional BiVO4 film electrode for water oxidation for the first time. Under illumination of a 100 mW cm(-2) Xe lamp, the CoTCPP-functionalized BiVO4 photoanode exhibits a 2-fold enhancement in photocurrent density at 1.23 V vs RHE and nearly a 450 mV cathodic shift at 0.5 mA cm(-2) photocurrent density relative to bare BiVO4 in 0.1 M Na2SO4 (pH = 6.8). Simultaneously, stoichiometric oxygen and hydrogen are generated with a faradic efficiency of 80% over 4 h. The activity and stability of the BiVO4 photoanode are dramatically increased by molecular CoTCPP, giving rise to higher performance than previously reported noble metal ruthenium complex-modified BiVO4 photoanode. By using hydrogen peroxide as the hole scavenger, we demonstrate that molecular CoTCPP catalyst greatly suppresses the hole-electron recombination on the surface of BiVO4 semiconductor, which offers a promising route toward high efficiency, low cost, practical solar fuel generation device.
