Abstract
OBJECTIVE Overactive bladder is a syndrome of urinary frequency and urgency, with or without urge incontinence, in the absence of local pathological factors. Since multiple causes are responsible for OAB, it requires proper diagnosis and comprehensive management. For decades, flavoxate is a globally used and accepted molecule by the urologists and the general physicians for the symptomatic treatment of OAB. In spite of its extensive use in OAB, a meta-analysis of the available publications for efficacy, safety and tolerability of flavoxate has not been conducted. This paper evaluates the strength of evidence of clinical effectiveness of safety and tolerability of flavoxate in the symptomatic treatment of OAB. METHODS Review articles, original studies and case reports on MEDLINE, the Cochrane Library, Google Scholar, Scirus, internal repository, etc. were searched using the keyword "flavoxate". For the primary outcome, the comparative data of flavoxate versus comparator was extracted for following parameters - overall efficacy and its side effect profile. Similarly as for secondary outcome, data were extracted for flavoxate per se for overall efficacy, frequency, urinary incontinence, mixed incontinence, nocturia, unpleasant urination, stranguria and its side effect profile and were analyzed using Comprehensive Meta-Analysis (CMA) software version 2.0. RESULTS In the current meta-analysis, 43 relevant published studies were considered which clearly demonstrated that flavoxate had improved clinical efficacy than placebo, emepronium, propantheline, and phenazopyridine. CONCLUSIONS Amongst all the interventions studied, flavoxate was effective and well-tolerated, with almost negligible side effects, making it worthy of consideration for the treatment of OAB.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This non-systematic review discusses the available evidence on the use of flavoxate in the treatment of overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS Medline was searched for inclusion of relevant studies. No limitations in time were considered. RESULTS Flavoxate hydrochloride is an antispasmodic agent which exerts an inhibition of the phosphodiesterases, a moderate calcium antagonistic activity, and a local anesthetic effect. Results from preclinical and clinical studies show that flavoxate significantly increases bladder volume capacity (BVC), with greater results if compared to other drugs such as emepronium bromide and propantheline. Moreover in clinical trials, both versus placebo or versus active comparators, flavoxate treatment was associated with a significant improvement in different low urinary tract symptoms, such as diurnal and night frequency, urgency and urinary incontinence, suprapubic pain, dysuria, hesitancy and burning. In addition flavoxate was associated with an overall more favourable safety profile than competitors. CONCLUSIONS Several researches and a number of years of clinical practice have proven the efficacy and tolerability of flavoxate administration in the treatment of OAB and associated symptoms. However, new studies are necessary to collect more evidence on the role of this molecule in the treatment of OAB and to further explore its use in other indications such as symptomatic treatment of lower urinary tract infections.

Abstract

While the condition's pathophysiology remains to be fully elucidated, pharmacotherapy is the main treatment option. Despite uncertainty as to drug treatment of choice, anticholinergics are increasingly being used in primary and secondary care settings. This review compares anticholinergic drugs with other types or classes of drugs for treating overactive bladder syndromes. OBJECTIVES To compare anticholinergic drugs with other types or classes of drugs for treating overactive bladder symptoms. SEARCH STRATEGY We searched the Cochrane Incontinence Group Specialised Trials Register (searched 20 December 2006) and the reference lists of relevant articles. No language or other limits were imposed. SELECTION CRITERIA All randomised and quasi-randomised controlled trials comparing anticholinergic drugs with other drugs for the treatment of overactive bladder symptoms. At least one arm of the study used an anticholinergic drug and at least one other arm used a non-anticholinergic drug. DATA COLLECTION AND ANALYSIS Two reviewers assessed the identified studies for eligibility and methodological quality and independently extracted data from the included studies. Data analysis was performed using RevMan software (version 4.2.8). MAIN RESULTS Twelve trials were included in the review. There were seven crossover trials and five parallel group studies. For the comparisons between anticholinergic drugs with tricyclic antidepressants, alpha adrenergic agonists, afferent nerve inhibitors, and calcium channel blocker a single trial was identified for each. Nine trials compared flavoxate with anticholinergics. There was no evidence of a difference in cure rates between anticholinergics and flavoxate. Adverse effects were more frequent in anticholinergic groups versus flavoxate groups (RR 2.28 95% CI 1.45 to 3.56). There was no strong evidence to favour either anticholinergic drugs or the comparators. AUTHORS' CONCLUSIONS Many of the drugs considered in trials in this review are no longer used in clinical practice (and this includes the most commonly tested - flavoxate). There is inadequate evidence as to determine whether any of the available drugs are better or worse than anticholinergic medications. Larger randomised controlled trials in clinical settings are required to further establish the role of these medications in the management of overactive bladder syndrome.

Abstract
A prospective study was done in pediatric out-patient department of a tertiary care hospital to evaluate the role of urodynamics in the management of primary enuresis in the 5-14-year-old children and to compare the effectiveness of multidimensional behavioral therapy with pharmacological therapy. Hundred and nineteen children between 5-14 years with primary enuresis were evaluated clinically and investigated. Three patients with obvious organic causes were then excluded. The remaining patients were given either behavioral or pharmacological treatment on the basis of urodynamic assessment. Urodynamic abnormalities were seen in 80/116 (68.9%) patients namely uninhibited bladder contraction 50/116 (43.1%), small bladder capacity 20/116 (17.2%), large bladder capacity 4/116 (3.4%), decreased bladder compliance 3/116 (2.5%) and detrusor sphincter dyssenergia 3/116 (2.5%). Combination of abnormal micturition history stating daytime urgency or frequency or dysfunctional voiding symptoms like squatting and/or abnormal voiding charts could predict abnormal results of urodynamics correctly with sensitivity of 81% and specificity of 86.2%. Ultrasound identified only 38/80 enuretics with urodynamic abnormalities although it was 100% specific. Additionally one patient who was identified as having a small bladder capacity on voiding chart was seen to have mild pelvicalyceal dilatation on ultrasound and subsequently on urodynamic assessment was found to have Detrusor sphincter dyssenergia (DSD). Behavioral therapy as compared to drug therapy produced more complete remission (17/18 vs. 14/18) and lesser relapse rate (2/17 vs. 5/14) in monosymptomatic enuretics with normal urodynamics. In patients with urodynamic abnormality, response rates with behavioral therapy, imipramine, oxybutynin and flavoxate were 73.9% (CI 56-91.8%), 89.4% (CI 75.7-100%), 94.2% (CI 84.7-100%) and 89.4% (CI 75.7-100%), respectively. Specific drug therapy as per the urodynamic abnormality was significantly more effective 49/57 [86% (CI 77-95%)] vs 17/23 [73.9% (CI 56.1-91.9%)] at P < 0.05 than behavioral therapy in patients with underlying abnormal urodynamics. Micturition history and voiding chart can be used as screening tool for enuretics. Behavioral therapy should be the first line treatment for mono symptomatic and drug therapy for polysymptomatic enuretics. Urodynamic testing may be reserved for polysymptomatic enuretics with abnormal ultrasound or those who fail to respond to first line treatment.

Abstract
BACKGROUND A 54-year-old woman presented with a 3-week history of fatigue and with jaundice that began 2 days before admission. She had been undergoing treatment with flavoxate for urinary incontinence (for 2 months before admission) and with tibolone for climacteric syndrome (for 6 months before admission). Laboratory tests revealed elevated concentrations of aminotransferases, bilirubin, gamma-glutamyltransferase and alkaline phosphatase. Liver biopsy revealed histological evidence of subacute, drug-induced liver damage. INVESTIGATIONS Physical examination, liver function tests, serology tests, autoantibody tests, genetic analysis of the TATA box of the UGT1A1 gene, ultrasonography and CT scan; MRI cholangiography; liver biopsy. DIAGNOSIS Drug-related hepatitis in a patient with Gilbert's syndrome. MANAGEMENT Flavoxate and tibolone were discontinued. Liver function test results improved progressively and normalized after almost 2 months.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES To investigate persistence and adherence of medication treatment in chronic overactive bladder/urinary incontinence (OAB/UI) patients, and to evaluate OAB/UI-related comorbidity events associated with persistence. METHODS Pharmaceutical outcomes research with a health-care provider perspective was conducted on a California Medicaid (Medi-Cal) chronic OAB/UI population. The primary end point was medication possession ratio (MPR), which was used to measure refill adherence. Secondary end points measuring persistence patterns included discontinuation of OAB drug therapy (medication-uncovered interval > 30 days) and time to discontinuation (period from the index date until the first discontinuation date). Significant factors on nonpersistence were found by using a Cox Proportional Hazards model. Factors contributing to nonadherence (MPR < 0.8) and the relationship between OAB/UI comorbidity events and persistence were examined by logistic regressions. RESULTS Of 2496 eligible patients, 36.9% had only one OAB/UI prescription. The mean MPR was 0.34 (SD 0.21) and the median was 0.3, indicating that on average only about one-third of period of time since medication initiation was covered by the therapy. Only 122 patients exhibited > 80% adherence during the 6-month follow-up-period. Significant predictors of higher persistence included: white ethnicity, previous hospitalization length, starting with tolterodine or oxybutynin extended-release, and previous use of topical drugs or antipsychotics. Nevertheless, previous depression or urinary tract infection (UTI) diagnosis, polypharmacy, significantly increased the odds of early discontinuation. Treatment discontinuation increased the risk of UTI diagnosis by 37% in the post-treatment period (P = 0.03; OR 1.37; 95% CI 1.03-1.84), but had no significant effect on other OAB/UI-related comorbidities. CONCLUSIONS For chronic OAB/UI patients identified in this study, both persistence and adherence with medication treatment were suboptimal. These results suggest that persistence and treatment discontinuation remains problematic for the OAB/UI population.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The National Institutes of Health (NIH) category IIIa chronic prostatitis syndromes (non bacterial chronic prostatitis) were common disorders but with few effective therapies. Alpha-blockers and bioflavonoids had recently been reported in randomized controlled trials to improve the symptom of these disorders in a significant proportion of men. The aim of this study was to confirm these findings in a prospective randomized, placebo-controlled trial. METHODS Forty-five men with category IIIa chronic non bacterial protatitis were randomized into three groups as follows: (1) placebo; (2) phenoxybenzamine-hydrochloride:10 mg two times a day for one month; (3) flavoxate HCI-neptumus: 200 mg three times a day for one month. The NIH chronic prostatitis symptom score was used to grade symptoms at the beginning and conclusion of the study. RESULTS All the patients in three groups completed the study except three dropout patients in placebo group because of sever symptoms. The three groups were similar in age, duration of symptoms and initial symptom score. Patients taking placebo had a mean improvement in NIH-CPSI from 21.85 to 19.55 (not significant), while the phenoxybenzamine-hydrochloride group had a mean improvement from 21.95 to 13.75 (P < 0.01), and those taking flavoxate HCI-neptumus had a mean improvement from 21.75 to 16.95 (P < 0.05). The decrease in NIH-CPSI was associated with significant improvement in patients' clinical manifestations. CONCLUSION Therapy with alpha-blockers was well tolerated with significant symptomatic improvement in most men having chronic non-bacterial chronic protatitis while the bioflavonoids group had no significant improvement. Mechanism of both medicines needs further study.

Abstract
A drug utilization observation study collected data on a total of 1800 patients given flavoxate (Spasuret 200) over 2 weeks for urge incontinence. Efficacy and tolerance parameters were determined. A subgroup of 618 patients without urinary tract infections or benign prostatic hyperplasia were treated with flavoxate only. The subgroup (n = 618) showed a reduction of dysuria (37%), nocturia (53%), and both daytime (61%) and nighttime urge (69%). Bladder volume at first urge sensation increased by 55.1+/-58.8 ml (36%), which was comparable to data from the entire group (1800 patients). In 89.2% of all patients the residual urine volume was stable or decreased. Undesirable side effects occurred in 1.8% of cases. Both groups showed better results with flavoxate four times daily (800 mg), compared to three times daily (600 mg). Flavoxate is effective and well tolerated and causes no additional problems due to residual urine or side effects.

Abstract
To investigate the effect of flavoxate (Urispadol) treatment on patients with symptomatic benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), with the main weight on the irritative symptoms, a randomized, double-blind, parallel-group, placebo-controlled and multicenter investigation was carried out. Seventy patients entered the study, 37 were allocated to flavoxate treatment on a daily dose of 1,200 mg (400 mg t.i.d.) for 12 weeks, and 33 patients were allocated to placebo treatment. In spite of a sufficient power, the study did not discriminate the two treatment groups in a statistically significant way (p > 0.05), when considering the main endpoints: the irritative symptom score and the global patient evaluation. Conservative treatment of micturition disorders accompanying BPH with flavoxate in doses of 1,200 mg/day cannot be recommended for clinical use.

Abstract
Detrusor instability occurs in approximately 10% of the adult population, producing troublesome symptoms. The pharmacotherapy currently available is usually only partially effective and cannot be adequately evaluated except under "blind" conditions because of the significant component attributable to placebo effects. The results of the present study revealed no advantage resulting from treatment with flavoxate, as assessed both subjectively and objectively. We suggest that this therapy does not appear to be beneficial in the medical management of detrusor instability.

Abstract
This article provides a review of the use of flavoxate hydrochloride in the treatment of urge incontinence. It outlines the pharmacology, mode of action, toxicology and pharmacokinetic studies which have been carried out, and then reviews the clinical studies, including those involving patients with benign prostatic hypertrophy. The effects of dosages of 600-1200 mg/day are compared, particularly regarding safety and tolerability factors. Finally, alternative therapies to flavoxate hydrochloride (alpha-adrenergic receptor blockers, oxybutinin chloride, terodiline hydrochloride, emepronium bromide and imipramine) are summarized. The article is written in the knowledge of recent evidence which indicates that flavoxate hydrochloride exhibits only weak anticholinergic activity on receptors involved in the control of the lower urinary tract.

Twenty-seven patients were treated for 4 weeks in a double-blind, randomized, parallel-group trial. Clinically, both schedules were equally successful. In urodynamic terms, however, particularly with respect to uninhibited detrusor contractions, 1200 mg/day was significantly superior to 600 mg/day. Tolerability was excellent for both regimens. The side-effect free treatment of urgency and urge incontinence is of paramount importance for a patient's quality of life.

Abstract
A double blind clinical trial was performed as a multicenter study to determine the usefulness of terodiline hydrochloride (HCl), an anticholinergic and calcium antagonistic agent, for urinary frequency or sense of residual urine in patients with psychogenic diseases, chronic prostatitis or chronic cystitis. Either 24 mg of terodiline HCl a day or 600 mg of flavoxate HCl a day was given for 4 weeks. One hundred and ninety-nine patients completed the test. The final global improvement rating was 70% in patients given terodiline HCl and 48% in patients given flavoxate HCl. The difference was statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Diurnal and nocturnal urinary frequency and urinary incontinence were less in patients given terodiline HCl than in patients given flavoxate HCl (p less than 0.01). No difference was noted between the two agents in relieving sense of residual urine. Compared with the control period, the average urinary frequency decreased 2.0 times a day in patients given terodiline HCl and 0.7 times in patients given flavoxate HCl. The difference was statistically significant (p less than 0.01). Adverse effects were observed in 12% of the patients given terodiline HCl and in 16% of the patients given flavoxate HCl. They included thirst, difficult urination, constipation, slight increase of serum GOT, GPT or alkaline phosphatase, and so forth. They disappeared with discontinued use of the agent. The global utility rating was 68% in patients given terodiline HCl and 45% in patients given flavoxate HCl, the difference being significant (p less than 0.01). These results indicate that terodiline HCl is useful for the treatment of urinary symptoms in patients with psychogenic diseases, chronic prostatitis or chronic cystitis.

Abstract
This preliminary communication reports on a non-randomized pilot type trial of 34 females with urgency after pelvic radiotherapy who were treated with flavoxate hydrochloride for 4 weeks. A dosage of 600 mg/day was given to 21 patients and 1200 mg/day to 13 patients. Clinically, both regimens achieved comparable results. Urodynamically (first desire volume, bladder capacity and pressure at capacity) treatment with 1200 mg/day was significantly superior to 600 mg/day. Both schedules were equally well tolerated by patients and no treatment interruption occurred. A randomized double-blind trial comparing 600 and 1200 mg/day flavoxate hydrochloride is currently underway the results of which will be reported in due course.

Abstract
Flavoxate is a smooth muscle relaxant widely used to treat urgency and urge incontinence. It has been used in an unblinded, uncontrolled clinical trial in 14 urology departments in universities and major hospitals in the People's Republic of China involving 361 patients with urgency/incontinence of various types. Patients were given 200 mg three times daily, orally, for 2 weeks, although 33 patients received a daily dosage of 1200 mg. Frequency, urgency, dysuria, nocturia and incontinence were assessed and scored clinically prior to and after treatment. Three departments also included urodynamic investigations, e.g. monitoring of the end-residual volume. Results from 336 evaluable patients indicate that 228 (67%) were completely cured of urgency/incontinence symptoms, 66 (20%) were improved and 42 (13%) patients were unchanged. Flavoxate was also effective in 77.4% of patients refractory to previous anti-cholinergic treatment. Treatment did not increase the end-residual volume and adverse events occurred only in four (1.3%) patients, two (0.6%) of which discontinued the therapy. The 1200 mg dose produced a complete cure in 82% of patients and improvement in the remaining 18%, with no side-effects. In conclusion, flavoxate is an effective and well tolerated treatment for urgency/incontinence of various causes.

Abstract
A controlled double-blind trial is reported of the parasympatholytic drug, flavoxate hydrochloride, and the new sympathomimetic drug, clenbuterol, in the treatment of 39 women with motor urge incontinence. The clinical results and the urodynamic findings of urethro-cystomanometry after therapy showed clenbuterol to be very effective with few side effects.

Abstract
A 4-week randomised, double-blind, cross-over study is described which compared the effects of a combination of emepronium bromide and flavoxate hydrochloride with placebo on incontinence and cystometrogram findings in 20 female patients aged 59 to 88 years. All patients initially had detrusor instability demonstrated on cystometrography: 14 patients completed the study; on placebo 10 still had unstable bladders and on active drugs seven were unstable. The number of wettings over a 48-h period before the study commenced and at the end each course of tablets showed no significant differences; also the patients' opinions about the effect on their incontinence indicated that the majority had the same opinion of each course. Active drugs significantly increased residual urine but did not significantly alter the values obtained for maximum cystometric capacity or effective cystometric capacity (the latter volume being maximum cystometric capacity minus the residual urine). No correlation was found, on either course of treatment, between the change to detrusor stability and the amount of improvement in incontinence. Some side effects are described. Despite evidence of a pharmacological effect on the bladder and patients' opinions tending to favour the active combination, nonetheless the main results of this small study do not suggest that the combination of emepronium bromide and flavoxate hydrochloride is an effective treatment of urinary incontinence associated with detrusor instability in elderly women.

Abstract
In a randomised double-blind cross-over trial of 19 females with motor urge incontinence but without bladder suspension defect, the effects of 14 days' treatment with emepronium bromide 200 mg qid, flavoxate chloride 200 mg qid or placebo qid were compared by means of micturition charts, the patients' drug preferences and evaluation of side effects. Placebo was the only drug giving rise to a statistically significant decrease in the frequency of voidings, incontinence and nocturia. Forty-seven per cent of the patients preferred placebo and side effects were less frequent during treatment with this medication. No differences could be demonstrated between the effects of emepronium bromide and flavoxate chloride. Perhaps detrusor instability is not always the main reason for the voiding dysfunction in these patients, in whom the effect of placebo was equal or superior to the effect of "active drugs" and superior to no treatment at all.

Abstract
Emepronium bromide and flavoxate have both and separately been used with success in the treatment of detrusor instability. In this study we have combined the two drugs emepronium bromide and flavoxate and compared the results with emepronium bromide. 20 consecutive patients with an uninhibited bladder, 12 men and 8 women, were randomly allocated to treatment with either emepronium bromide/flavoxate or emepronium bromide. In this trial we found that treatment with the combination is significantly better than treatment with emepronium bromide only.

Abstract
The effect of flavoxate, a smooth muscle relaxant, was investigated in 6 elderly patients with uninhibited detrusor contractions associated with urinary incontinence. Cystometry was done initially to confirm the diagnosis, immediately after an intravenous injection of 100 mg. flavoxate and after 200 mg. flavoxate orally 4 times daily for 7 days. No consistent drug effect could be detected cystometrically and incontinence was unchanged clinically.

Abstract
40 gynecological patients with motoric and sensoric urge incontinence were treated with the spasmolytic substance Flavoxat. Before treatment and after 4 weeks clinical and urodynamic evaluation were carried out. The results show that 65% of the patients improved under Flavoxat treatment. Incontinence was slightly improved in one third of the patients, in another third it was markedly improved or cured. An increased bladder capacity in the standing position and a decreased frequency of detrusor contractions was found in the urodynamic investigations. The residual urine remained constant.

Abstract
Bladder instability provokes frequency, urgency, urge incontinence and enuresis in a great percentage of patients of both sexes, who undergo urodynamic examination when other clinical elements are not in evidence. The presence of bladder contractions of variable entity, even capable of inducing emptying, during filling are accompanied by a strong desire to micturate. Our study includes daily recordings of rhythm and quantity of micturitions and leaks, evaluation of urethral pressure, transurethral cystometry and uroflowmetry. The urethral pressure profile was performed with the technique of Brown and Wickham by infusing at 2 ml/min with 10-Ch catheter, withdrawn at a speed of 15 cm/min. Transurethral cystometry was performed by a continuous infusion at moderate speed (50 ml/min) of an isotonic solution at room temperature in a recumbent patient with two catheters in the bladder. When the contractions of the detrusor appear, we evaluate the pharmacological response to the filling with a myolitic agent (flavoxate) first, and with synthetic anticholinergic (emepronium bromide) after, with the purpose of discriminating the myogenic or neurogenic nature of the alteration and to propose suitable therapy.

Abstract
A detailed study and analysis of several hundred cases of motor urge incontinence in the female is presented and summarized. This includes the incidence, the history referring to a questionnaire with a new urge and stress score, the symptomatology, possible etiological factors, the cystometric manifestation and the responsiveness to several treatment modalities and medications. A comparison of flavoxate, emepronium, propantheline and a placebo for the treatment of urinary incontinence due to bladder instability is made, the results are discussed and recommendations are made.

Abstract
Cystometric changes produced by 3 parenterally administered drugs, flavoxate hydrochloride, emepronium bromide and imipramine hydrochloride, have been evaluated in 15 female patients with detrusor instability. Each patient was given 2 of the 3 drugs and cystometric recordings were done 10 and 30 minutes after the administration of each drug. Emepronium bromide was found to be the only drug to cause a significant improvement in bladder capacity and reduction in detrusor pressure.

Abstract
The effect of Flavoxate on hyperactive detrusor contraction was studied in 37 patients, including 11 patients in whom the drug was administered intravenously during the urodynamic study. Beside the evaluation of frequency, nocturia and enuresis, the amplitude and the onset of uninhibited detrusor contraction (in correlation to bladder volume) was registered. The results showed subjective improvement in 61.3%. The complaints mentioned above improved in approximately 50%. The urodynamic data showed diminishing of the mean pressure during uninhibited detrusor contraction by almost 50% and the delay of the onset by 80% of bladder capacity. However, average bladder capacity increase was only 19%. It finally became obvious that the effect of Flavoxate was markedly worse in the neurogenic bladder group in comparison to the motoric urge patients.

Abstract
Today neuropharmacas are a helpful part in the conservative treatment of the neurogenic bladder disorders. They are, or course, no "wonder-drugs" and usually lead to an improvement only of the troubles, but rarely to complete cure. If monotherapy does not lead to the results wanted, one should combine drugs of the same of similar effects but with different pharmacologic targets. A real progress was reached through alpha-receptor-blockers, whose use has, especially in children with myelomeningocele, changed the therapeutic concept in favour of a largely conservative treatment. We already know a number of substances that in one way or other influence the muscles of the bladder and the bladder outlet. If only part of them will reach clinical usage, it can be assumed that the pharmacotherapy will become even more meaningful in the treatment of neurogenic bladder disorders.

Abstract
34 patients suffering from detrusor hyperreflexia due to multiple sclerosis entered the trial and 32 patients accomplished. The patients received each drug for a period of 14 days. The patients made records of relevant symptoms, urgency and urge incontinence and compared the treatment periods according to these symptoms. Registration of the number of micturitions was also made. Furthermore, the patients underwent cystometric studies. The following parameters were recorded and compared: residual urine, volume at the first bladder contraction, effective volume and amplitude of the first bladder contraction. The study showed that the patients preferred methantheline bromide. The entire cystometric pattern changed statistically significant with methantheline bromide, but only with concordance to the patients preferences in 60%. Decrease in number of micturitions and volume at the first bladder contraction were the only parameters showing accordance with the preferences. The drugs caused many various side effects. 12 treatment periods were discontinued due to side effects of meladrazine tartrate. The cystometric recordings seem to be of little use in evaluation of a drugs therapeutic effect, and it is difficult to find parameters which reflect the patients preference of the drugs.

Abstract
42 patients with 'unstable bladder' were treated with flavoxate hydrochloride. A previous treatment with parasympathicolytic drugs (propantheline bromide and/or emepronium bromide) was unsuccessful. The instability of the detrusor was proven by a urodynamical investigation. Flavoxate hydrochloride is a papaverine-like smooth muscle relaxant. The results and the complications of the treatment are discussed.
