Eruptive Syringoma in the Elderly: A Case Report

Syringomas are benign tumors of adnexal origin, and eruptive syringoma is an extremely rare subtype. In this paper, we present a case of a unusual occurrence of eruptive syringoma in 66-year old woman that includes clinical and pathohistological findings and the review of the clinical picture, diagnosis, and treatment options.

Vulvar syringoma causing pruritus and carcinophobia: treatment by argon laser

Syringomas are benign lesions most commonly appearing around the eyelids and in malar areas, but they have also been described on other body sites. Depending on the site they may cause either aesthetic disturbance (e.g. face, neck, arms) or pruritus (e.g. vulva). This is the first report of argon laser treatment of syringoma in a patient with multiple vulvar syringomas in association with pruritus vulvae and carcinophobia.

Syringoma: a clinicopathologic and immunohistologic study and results of treatment

The purpose of our study was to describe clinical and histopathological features of sixty one patients with histological diagnosis of syringoma over four year period in our dermatology clinic in Korea. Female:male ratio was 6.6:1 with onset of age during 2nd and 3rd decades in more than half of the patients in our study. The most frequently involved site was eyelids (43 cases, 70.5%) and the most common color of lesion was skin-color (30 cases, 49.2%). In 34 cases, characteristic tad-pole appearances (55.7%) were observed. Basal hyperpigmentation was observed more frequently in brown-colored lesion (p=0.005). Fibrosis was observed more frequently in erythematous lesion (p=0.033). Keratin cyst was observed less frequently in genital involved group (p=0.006). We also performed immunohistochemical stain for the presence of progesterone receptor (PR) and estrogen receptor (ER) in fifty six cases with negative results.

Eruptive syringoma

Eruptive syringoma is a rare eruption of small, flesh-colored papules that occurs in successive crops on the anterior body surfaces and arises in the peripubertal period. The lesions are benign, and treatment options are generally unsatisfactory. The case of a 27-year-old man with a 1-year history of eruptive syringoma is presented.

The Treatment of Eruptive Syringomas in an African American Patient with a Combination of Trichloroacetic Acid and CO2Laser Destruction

BACKGROUND

Eruptive syringomas are uncommon benign adnexal neoplasms. They are numerous and disseminated and often have a predilection for the neck, face, chest, and axillary fossae. Because they are persistent, usually numerous, and often on exposed sites, the lesions may be disfiguring and often pose significant cosmetic concerns for patients. Many treatment modalities such as dermabrasion, electrodesiccation with curettage, and scissors excision have been tried with some success, but more recently lasers have provided good to excellent results.

OBJECTIVE

To describe an approach to the treatment of eruptive syringomas in an African American patient with a combination of trichloroacetic acid (TCA) and CO2 laser resurfacing, providing acceptable cosmetic results without significant side effects.

METHODS

We describe an African American patient with eruptive syringomas of the face treated with a combination of TCA and CO2 laser resurfacing with good results.

RESULTS

While the syringomas were not completely ablated, the combination of TCA and CO2 laser resurfacing provided acceptable cosmetic results without significant side effects.

CONCLUSION

The TCA pretreatment probably removed some of the bulk of the surface of the lesions, thereby reducing the number of laser passes required to flatten the remainder of the lesions and thus lessening the potential for thermal damage at the treated sites and of surrounding normal skin.

[Treatment of peri-ocular skin lesions with the erbium:YAG laser]

INTRODUCTION

A great number of consmetically disturbing, cutaneous lesions are localized in the periocular region. While various approaches for treatment such as excision, electrocauterization or cryosurgery often show unsatisfactory results, the use of laser technology is of increasing interest.

MATERIAL AND METHODS

A total of 104 patients with different cutaneous periorbital lesions (wrinkles, xanthelasma, syringoma) were treated with a new erbium: YAG laser system (wavelength 2940 nm, pulse duration 0.350 ms and pulse energy 0.1-1.7 Joules), which works on the principle of vaporization.

RESULTS

The erbium: YAG laser allows athermic ablation of very thin skin layers without scarring and with minimal lateral thermal injury due an extremely short pulse duration. Periorbital lesions can be treated effectively by erbium: YAG laser, and good to excellent cosmetic results can be obtained.

CONCLUSIONS

The use of pulsed erbium: YAG laser is an effective and promising new method for treatment of different superficial periorbital cutaneous lesions.

Malignant chondroid syringoma

Malignant chondroid syringoma (MCS) is a rare tumor, of the sweat gland; only a few hundred such cases are reported in literature. A female presented with a subcutaneous swelling on the scalp with repeated recurrence and positive regional lymph nodes. Adequate planning for the treatment of this case was possible as preoperative diagnosis of MCS was documented by fine needle aspiration cytology (FNAC). The case was successfully managed with a multimodal approach, which included radical surgery and subsequent radiotherapy. The patient is symptom free after 25 months. The possibility of this type tumor should be entertained when multiple recurrences occur following adequate excision. FNAC has a definitive role in planning rational therapy.

Syringoma of the vulva. A case report

Syringoma of the vulva, especially as the multiple form, is a rare disorder. A review of the diagnoses in 4,500 patients from the Vulvar Clinic, Hospital de Clínicas José de San Martín, First Chair of Gynecology, Buenos Aires University, revealed only three cases, two of which were asymptomatic. The third patient, with multiple lesions and severe discomfort, is presented. With cryotherapy the lesions healed, and the patient was asymptomatic even during warm weather.
