Fracture resistance of chairside CAD-CAM lithium disilicate occlusal veneer with various designs after mechanical aging. J Prosthodont 2024. Abstract
PURPOSE This study evaluated the fracture resistance of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD-CAM) lithium disilicate crown, onlay, and non-anatomical occlusal veneer (A-OV) with and without margin fabricated. MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty-four CAD-CAM lithium disilicate restorations were designed as (1) complete coverage crown (CCC); (2) A-OV with margin; (3) non-A-OV with margin (NA-OV-M); and (4) non-A-OV without margin (NA-OV-NM), 16 of each. Restorations were crystallized and adhesively luted to resin dies using resin cement. Specimens were then subjected to 400,000 cycles of chewing in a mastication simulator. A universal testing machine was used to apply a compressive load at a crosshead speed of 1 mm/min to the long axis of the tooth with a stainless-steel sphere until fracture occurred. One-way ANOVA followed by post hoc tests were used to assess the impact of preparation design on the fracture load of CAD-CAM lithium disilicate restorations. RESULTS The highest fracture load was recorded for CAD-CAM lithium disilicate indirect restorations for non-A-OVs preparation with margin (2549 ± 428 N) and onlay (2549 ± 293 N) and the lowest fracture load was recorded for CCCs (2389 ± 428 N); however, there was no significant (p = 0.640) between groups. CONCLUSIONS CAD-CAM lithium disilicate restorations fabricated for anatomical and non-A-OV preparation display a fracture resistance similar to CCCs. Conservative partial coverage restorations may be considered an acceptable approach for posterior teeth.

Abstract
To evaluate the degree of conversion (DC), surface hardness (SH), and flexural strength (FS) of resin-based core build-up materials. Core build-up materials used were: MultiCore Flow (MCF); Activa (ACT); Core-X Flow (CXF); and everX flow (EVX), and DC, SH and FS were measured. An increase of DC was identified for all materials post-cure, except for EVX. The DC change percentage ranged from 5%-33%, and EVX was displayed the greatest DC rate. All materials displayed an SH increase after 30 days and the greatest increase was observed in ACT. At 1 h, the SH of EVX and CXF was different from the other materials. At 30 days, MCF displayed the greatest SH. All materials displayed an increase in their FS after 30 days except for EVX, and ranging 3%-36% were noticed. Differences observed between materials, thus clinician should be acquainted mechanical properties of these materials to ensure the success of the restorations.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the effect of painless low-power Er:YAG laser irradiation of conventional and polymer-infiltrated ceramic network (PICN) type CAD-CAM resin-based composites (RBCs) on resin bonding. METHODS An Er:YAG laser system, phosphoric acid etchant, universal adhesive, RBC, and two types of CAD-CAM RBC block were used. Microtensile bond strength, fracture mode, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations of bonding interfaces and CAD-CAM surfaces, and surface roughness of ground and pretreated surfaces were investigated. As pretreatment methods, low-power Er:YAG laser irradiation and air-abrasion with alumina particles were used. RESULTS The effect of low-power Er:YAG laser irradiation of CAD-CAM RBCs on bonding to repair resin varied depending on the type of CAD-CAM RBCs. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The low-power Er:YAG laser irradiation of the conventional CAD-CAM RBCs was shown to be effective as a surface pretreatment for resin bonding, while the laser irradiation of PICN-type CAD-CAM RBCs was not effective.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The present case report describes the atraumatic extraction of a primary maxillary right canine followed by immediate implant placement with a customized zirconia abutment and monolithic ultra-translucent zirconia (5Y-PSZ) crown. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS A 31-year-old patient presented to the clinic with the primary concern of mobility and gingival inflammation around the maxillary right canine. After clinical evaluation, the tooth was found to be a primary retained tooth that presented grade 3 mobility and gingival inflammation. Atraumatic tooth extraction was performed, followed by immediate implant placement of a screw-retained provisional restoration with the use of a surgical guide. The soft tissue was contoured until ideal architecture was obtained. The final restoration included a customized zirconia and titanium abutment and a characterized implant-supported monolithic 5Y-PSZ crown. CONCLUSIONS Well-planned surgical and restorative procedures including atraumatic extraction, 3D implant planning for surgical guide fabrication, implant placement, and a customized zirconia abutment with a monolithic 5Y-PSZ crown can achieve high esthetic results in replacing a primary tooth in the esthetic zone.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this investigation was to compare the fracture resistance of chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramic occlusal veneers with and without margin and traditional full coverage premolar crowns. METHODS AND MATERIALS A total of 60 chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramic (Amber Mill, Hass Bio) restorations were designed and fabricated with a chairside CAD/CAM system (CEREC Dentsply Sirona). The restorations were divided into three groups (n=20): 1) occlusal veneer with 1.0-mm uniform occlusal thickness and with chamfer margin; 2) occlusal veneer with 1.0-mm uniform occlusal thickness and without margin; and 3) full coverage crown with uniform occlusal thickness and gingival margin. Occlusal veneers and crowns were cemented with dual cured resin luting cement (Multilink, Ivoclar Vivadent) to printed resin dies, load cycled (5 million load cycles at 1 Hz with 275 N force), and then loaded until fracture. Load at break (LB) and peak load (PL) until fracture were recorded. Scanning electron microscope images of the tested restorations on the abutments were obtained. RESULTS Fracture strengths were different depending on the design of the restoration. There was no significant difference in fracture strength between the two types of occlusal veneer (LB: 1132.45 N; PL: 1143.30 N for veneers with margin; LB: 1149.25 N; PL: 1219.05 N for veneers without margin). Full coverage crowns showed the lowest fracture resistance (LB: 936.26 N, PL: 976.42 N), which was significantly lower than both designs of occlusal veneer. CONCLUSIONS The fracture resistance of the CAD/CAM lithium disilicate-reinforced ceramic restorations was influenced by the design. Occlusal veneers with and without margin displayed higher fracture resistance than traditional crowns.

Abstract
BACKGROUND Zirconia is a widely used material in the dental industry due to its excellent mechanical and aesthetic properties. Recently, a new 3D printing process called suspension-enclosing projection stereolithography (SEPS) was introduced to fabricate zirconia dental restorations. However, the effect of the sintering time and temperature on the properties of zirconia produced via SEPS has not been fully investigated. METHODS Zirconia slurries were prepared with varying percentages of zirconia powders and 3D printing resins, and 5Y-TZP (5 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia) (n = 40) and 3Y-TZP (3 mol% yttria-stabilized zirconia) (n = 40) bar specimens were fabricated via SEPS manufacturing. The specimens were sintered at different temperatures and dwell times, and their flexural strength, density, and phase composition were measured. The viscosity of the slurries was also measured. Statistical analysis was performed using Welch's ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis tests to evaluate the impact of the sintering conditions. RESULTS Significant differences in flexural strength (p < 0.01) were observed between the 5Y-TZP samples, with those sintered at 1530 °C for 120 min showing an average strength of 268.34 ± 44.66 MPa, compared to 174.16 ± 42.29 MPa for those sintered at 1450 °C for 120 min. In terms of density, significant differences (p < 0.01) were noted for the 3Y-TZP specimens, with an average density of 6.66 ± 0.49 g/cm3 for samples sintered at 1530 °C for 120 min, versus 5.75 ± 0.55 g/cm3 for those sintered at 1530 °C for 10 min. X-ray diffraction confirmed the presence of a predominantly tetragonal phase in both materials. CONCLUSIONS Zirconia printed via SEPS manufacturing can be sintered at a higher temperature with shorter dwell times, thereby producing high density samples. Different sintering conditions can be used to fully sinter 3D-printed zirconia for potential dental applications.

Abstract
PURPOSE To compare the fracture resistance of five different groups of chairside CAD/CAM molar crowns fabricated from various lithium disilicate ceramic materials (LDC): one conventional precrystallized CAD/CAM LDC, two novel precrystallized LDCs, and one fully crystallized LDC tested both with and without optional sintering. MATERIALS AND METHODS A total of 60 chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate molar crowns (n = 12 per group) with 1.5-mm occlusal thickness and a 1.0-mm chamfer finish were designed and fabricated with a chairside CAD/CAM system (CEREC, Dentsply Sirona). The restorations were divided into five groups: (1) IPS e.max CAD; (2) Amber Mill; (3) Straumann n!ce; (4) Straumann n!ce with optional sintering; and (5) Supreme CAD. Restorations were cemented using conventional resin luting cement and primer system to 3D-printed resin dies. Bonded restorations were loaded for 100,000 cycles with 275-N force, and the load at break (LB) and peak load (PL) until fracture were measured. SEM images of fracture surfaces on the printed dies were obtained. RESULTS Fracture resistance was significantly different depending on the material. Supreme CAD showed the highest fracture resistance (LB: 1,557.2 N; PL: 1,785.8 N), followed by Amber Mill (LB: 1,393.0 N; PL: 1,604.2 N) and IPS e.max CAD (LB: 1,315.7 N; PL: 1,461.9 N). Straumann n!ce without (LB: 862.4 N; PL: 942.9 N) and with the optional sintering (LB: 490.4 N; PL: 541.0 N) showed significantly lower fracture resistance than the others. CONCLUSION The fracture resistance of chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate molar crowns varied depending on the material, and the novel materials did not perform as well as the conventional equivalents. Fully crystallized lithium disilicate ceramic block materials showed lower fracture resistance than precrystallized counterparts and should be used with caution in the clinic, especially with optional sintering.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This case report describes the clinical protocols for using injectable flowable resin-based composite veneers without tooth reduction as long-term prototype restorations, followed by conservative feldspathic veneer restorations. CLINICAL CONSIDERATION The patient's primary concern was to improve her smile. After clinical evaluation, injectable flowable resin composite veneers were recommended as long-term prototypes followed by conservative tooth preparation and ceramic veneers. Flowable composite veneers were created with a transparent silicone index fabricated from a diagnostic wax-up approved by the patient. No tooth reduction was required to place this type of composite veneer. Later, a printed reduction guide was used to provide conservative tooth preparation followed by the cementation of thin feldspathic porcelain veneers under full isolation with a rubber dam. CONCLUSIONS Injectable flowable resin-based composite veneers can successfully act as long-term esthetic prototypes before ceramic veneers. The outcome of these restorations is very predictable because the diagnostic wax-up anatomy is transferred to the mouth through the transparent silicone index, and they can be placed without tooth reduction. Conservative tooth preparation can be performed on the composite veneers so that minimal tooth structure is removed to maximize the bonding performance of ceramic veneers.

Abstract
Background and Objective: This study aimed to compare the surface finish of milled leucite-reinforced ceramics polished with ceramic and composite polishing systems based on the manufacturers' recommendations. Materials and Methods: Sixty subtractive computer-aided manufactured (s-CAM) leucite-reinforced glass-ceramic specimens (IPS-Empress-CAD) were assigned into six groups: no polishing, a ceramic polishing kit, and four composite kit groups. The roughness average (Ra) was evaluated in microns using a profilometer, and scanning electron micrographs were obtained for qualitative analysis. A Tukey HSD posthoc test (α = 0.05) was used to determine significant intergroup differences. Results: After surface evaluation of the ceramics, the Ra values of the polishing systems ranked OptraFine (0.41 ± 0.26) < Enhance (1.60 ± 0.54) < Shofu (2.14 ± 0.44) < Astropol (4.05 ± 0.72) < DiaComp (5.66 ± 0.62) < No Polishing (5.66 ± 0.74). Discussion: Composite polishing systems did not provide as smooth surfaces as the ceramic polishing kit for CAD-CAM leucite-reinforced ceramics. Thus, using ceramic polishing systems, polishing leucite ceramics is recommended, whereas composite polishing systems should not be considered as an alternative for use in minimally invasive dentistry.

Abstract
The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of over-the-counter (OTC) at-home whitening products with LED light on partially- and fully-crystalized CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramics. Two partially-crystalized CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramics, Amber Mill and IPS e.max CAD, and one fully-crystalized CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic, n!ce Straumann, were used. The specimens were divided based on treatment with OTC whitening products: no treatment provided, Colgate Optic, Crest 3D and Walgreens Deluxe. The surface roughness of the specimens was evaluated with an optical profilometer and scanning electron microscopy. The three LED whitening products significantly increased the surface roughness and changed surface morphology of Amber Mill and IPS e.max CAD but no differences for n!ce Straumann. OTC at-home whitening products with LED light can significantly increase the surface roughness of restorations fabricated with these partially-crystalized CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic restorations. However, these products do not increase the surface roughness of restorations fabricated with this fully-crystalized lithium disilicate ceramic.

Abstract
PURPOSE The purpose of this study was to compare student performance in removable partial denture (RPD) design during a pre-clinical RPD course with and without using a recently developed computer software named AiDental. Additionally, student perceptions associated with the use of this software were assessed. METHODS The AiDental software consists of a learning environment containing an RPD design system that automatically designs RPDs based on the user's input. The software also contains an RPD game component that compares the user's RPD Design to an automatically generated RPD ideal design. The study was conducted in two phases. In phase one, pre-clinical second-year dental students who participated in the study were randomly divided into two groups: The AiDental group with AiDental software access (n = 36), and the conventional group without software access (n = 37). Both groups received conventional RPD instruction and practice, however, the AiDental group had additional access to the AiDental software. After 2 weeks, both groups took a mock practical test, which was collected and graded by the principal investigator (PI). The PI was blinded from group assignment and no identifying information was used in the mock practical. In phase two, all students were granted access to the AiDental software for the remainder of the pre-clinical course duration. At the conclusion of the course, all students were given a survey to evaluate their perceptions of the AiDental software. Descriptive statistics were calculated and analyzed. Variables related to perceptions of both the AiDental designer and game were assessed using Spearman's rank correlation test, the chi-square test, Fisher's exact test, and the non-parametric Wilcoxon rank-sum test as appropriate. In addition, a thematic analysis of the responses to the optional comments section was conducted using the Braun and Clarke method. RESULTS Phase one results showed that subjects in the AiDental group were more likely than subjects in the conventional group to receive a final grade of A or B. Phase two results showed generally favorable student perceptions towards the software, and additionally, the results showed that age was significantly negatively correlated with ease of use of the software, improving decision-making, and critical thinking relative to RPD design choices. However, no correlation between age and using the software as a reference were noted. CONCLUSIONS The use of AiDental's automated feedback and gamification techniques in RPD education had a positive effect on student grades and it was well-liked by students. Thus, the results suggest that AiDental has the potential to be a useful adjunct to pre-clinical teaching.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This case report describes a minimally invasive approach with tooth whitening and partial ceramic veneers in the esthetic zone with a 5-year follow-up. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS The patient was initially concerned about the tooth color and previous direct resin composite restorations that chipped on the incisal edges of both maxillary central incisors. Tooth whitening and partial veneers for both central incisors were recommended after clinical evaluation. Two sessions of in-office tooth whitening, first with 35% hydrogen peroxide and later with 10% carbamide peroxide from first premolar to first premolar, were provided. Minimal tooth preparation that only removed the fractured composite restorations was performed followed by placement of feldspathic porcelain ultrathin partial ceramic veneers for both central incisors. We emphasize the benefits of minimal tooth preparation paired with partial ceramic veneers and the importance of masking discolored tooth structure with such thin veneers, including potential tooth whitening. CONCLUSIONS Overall, we demonstrate a well-planned and executed restorative procedure combining tooth whitening and ultrathin partial ceramic veneers to achieve desired results in the esthetic zone that remained successful for five years.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES This case report describes a combination treatment composed of tooth whitening, microabrasion, resin infiltration, and resin-based composite restoration to manage multifactorial stained enamel lesions on anterior teeth. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS The patient's primary concern was to improve the esthetics of their smile after about a decade of extensive orthodontic and orthognathic procedures. After clinical evaluation and history taking, the authors determined that the enamel defects were the result of carious and developmental factors. In-office tooth whitening took place in one visit, followed by micro abrasion and resin infiltration in another visit. Thirteen months later, a follow-up visit showed that the results were stable and that the patient was satisfied with the overall outcome. A small resin composite restoration was added at the follow up visit to repair a previous restoration and to reestablish the facial contours of the central incisor. CONCLUSIONS A combination treatment protocol composed of tooth whitening, microabrasion, and resin infiltration can improve patient satisfaction and avoid unnecessary invasive treatment.

Abstract
Dental implants have become a well-established treatment modality for the management of complete and partial edentulism. Recent advancements in dental implant systems and CAD/CAM technologies have revolutionized prosthodontic practice by allowing for the predictable, efficient, and faster management of complex dental scenarios. This clinical report describes the interdisciplinary management of a patient with Sjogren's syndrome and terminal dentition. The patient was rehabilitated using dental implants and zirconia-based prostheses in the maxillary and mandibular arches. These prostheses were fabricated using a combination of CAD/CAM and analog techniques. The successful outcomes for the patient demonstrate the importance of appropriate use of biomaterials and the implementation of interdisciplinary collaboration in treating complex dental cases.

Abstract
Minimally invasive dentistry is a considered process that requires the clinician to be prepared with the ideal sequence and the tools needed. This report describes a well-planned ultraconservative approach using only two ceramic laminate veneers for the maxillary central incisors to significantly improve the patient's overall smile. A 30-year-old female presented with the chief complaints of having diastemas between the central and lateral incisors as well as incisal wear. Diagnostic wax-up and mock-up were performed, and the patient approved the minimally invasive treatment with veneers only for central incisors. A reduction guide aided the conservative tooth preparations, and hand-crafted feldspathic veneers were bonded under total isolation with a rubber dam. The two final conservative veneers significantly improved the smile and fulfilled the patient's expectations. Following proper planning and sequencing, predictable outcomes were obtained and fulfilled the patient's esthetic demands. Minimally invasive restorative dentistry with only two single veneers can impact the entire smile frame. Overtreatment in the esthetic zone is unnecessary to meet a patient's esthetic expectations.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This case report describes the use of a combination of a polychromatic resin composite restoration and resin infiltration to achieve a satisfactory esthetic outcome that has lasted over five years. CLINICAL CONSIDERATIONS The patient's primary complaint was a desire to replace an existing stained resin composite on the facial and mesial surfaces of the maxillary left central incisor, and a white spot on the facial surface of the maxillary right central incisor. After clinical evaluation, the patient was offered either replacement of the restoration with a polychromatic restoration simulating a white spot, or a combined treatment with polychromatic composite and resin infiltration restorations, which was recommended. The patient selected the latter treatment. A putty matrix was fabricated, and a quick mock-up was done using various enamel and dentin shades of resin composite to determine proper material selection. The previous resin composite restoration was removed, and layers of new dentin, body, and enamel composite were placed. An interproximal matrix was used in order to provide ideal contour and contact. Finishing and polishing procedures were performed. The maxillary right central incisor was treated with resin infiltration in order to subdue the white spot on the facial surface. CONCLUSIONS Polychromatic resin composite and resin infiltration restorations to replace a stained restoration and mask a white spot can achieve desired results in the esthetic zone and maintain them for five years.

Abstract
SUMMARY
Objective: To investigate the efficacy of three specially designed polishing kits for provisional restorations made from three chairside computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) provisional resin blocks.
Method: Ninety-six chairside CAD/CAM provisional restorations were milled out of three chairside CAD/CAM provisional resin blocks: (1) ArtBloc Temp (Merz Dental); (2) Telio CAD (Ivoclar Vivadent); and (3) Vita CAD-Temp (VITA Zahnfabrik). The provisional restorations for each material were allocated into the following groups: (1) milled restorations (no polish); (2) polished with CADMaster CAD/CAM Adjustment & Polishing Kit (CM, Shofu); (3) polished with KUT Ultimate Bisacryl (Temporaries) Polishing Kit (KU, Dental Savings Club); and (4) polished with K0330 PMMA Adjusting, Finishing & Polishing (KP, Brasseler USA). Optical profilometry and atomic force microscopy (AFM) were used to assess the surface roughness (Ra) of each provisional restoration at the microscale and nanoscale, respectively, and obtain topographical images. In addition, the milled and polished restorations were visually evaluated by 16 dentists.
Results: There was a strong positive correlation with Ra values between optical profilometry and AFM. Only KP significantly improved the surface roughness of CAD/CAM provisional restorations compared to the milled equivalent, regardless of material type or measurement modality (ie, lateral length scale). Although surface topography imaging with AFM revealed some shallow scratches, even for KP polished specimens, all KP polished restorations were categorized as clinically acceptable for provisional restorations in visual inspections from dentists.
Conclusion: Specially designed polishing kits for provisional restorations did not all improve the surface roughness of chairside CAD/CAM provisional restorations, regardless of the measurement method. KP was more consistently effective in polishing milled chairside CAD/CAM provisional restorations than CM and KU.

Abstract
Background and Objectives: The report describes a technique using a diagnostic mock-up as a crown-lengthening surgical guide to improve the gingival architecture. Materials and Methods: The patient's primary concern was improving her smile due to her "gummy smile" and short clinical crowns. After clinical evaluation, surgical crown lengthening accompanied by maxillary central full-coverage single-unit prostheses and lateral incisor veneers was recommended. The diagnostic mock-up was placed in the patient's maxillary anterior region and used as a soft tissue reduction guide for the gingivectomy. Once the planned gingival architecture was achieved, a flap was reflected to proceed with ostectomy in order to obtain an appropriate alveolar bone crest level using the overlay. After six months, all-ceramic crowns and porcelain veneers were provided as permanent restorations. Results: A diagnostic mock-up fabricated with a putty guide directly from the diagnostic wax-up can be an adequate surgical guide for crown-lengthening procedures. The diagnostic wax-up was used to fabricate the diagnostic mock-up. These results suggested that it can be used as a crown-lengthening surgical guide to modify the gingival architecture. Several advantages of the overlay used in the aesthetic complex case include: (1) providing a preview of potential restorative outcomes, (2) allowing for the appropriate positioning of gingival margins and the desired alveolar bone crest level for the crown-lengthening procedure, and (3) serving as a provisional restoration after surgery. Conclusions: The use of a diagnostic mock-up, which was based on a diagnostic wax-up, as the surgical guide resulted in successful crown lengthening and provisional restorations. Thus, a diagnostic overlay can be a viable option as a surgical guide for crown lengthening.

Abstract
One technique for placing of resin-based composite for large posterior cavities is the use of short fiber-reinforced resin-based composite (SFRC) to replace dentin in a biomimetic approach. As endurance under mastication cycles is a significant consideration in the clinical success of resin-based composite posterior restorations, the use of SFRC as a base material may prevent restorative fracture due to the fibers' effectiveness in stopping cracks. This review article specifies the characteristics of SFRC and describes the major underlying mechanisms of short fiber reinforcement for resin-based composite. Insights are further taken from laboratory studies used to define the short fiber-related properties of resin-based composite and the performance of currently available materials, focusing on aspects that are relevant to the reinforcement of resin-based composite. Finally, future standpoints on the development of SFRCs with nano fibers and different resin monomers, and their role in digital dentistry, are discussed.

Abstract
This study uses fracture tests and fractographical analysis to compare computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) lithium disilicate molar crowns with the previous occlusal thickness recommendation of 1.5-mm, the new recommendation of 1.0-mm, and a less invasive thickness of 0.8-mm. After fatigue application, fracture tests and fractographic analysis were conducted. The fracture resistance of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate molar crowns was different depending on the occlusal thickness of the restoration, and decreased with lower the thickness. However, the fracture resistance of crowns of all three thicknesses exceeded the reported maximum bite force in the first molar region after the fatigue process, and can be considered acceptable for use in the clinic.

Abstract
To examine the effect of mold enclosure and chisel design on macro shear fatigue bond strengths of dental adhesive systems. The fatigue bond strength testing was conducted with two commercially available dental adhesive systems, (1) OptiBond eXTRa and (2) Scotchbond Universal, for bonding a resin composite (Filtek Supreme Ultra) to both enamel and dentin using a mold enclosure and a non‐mold enclosure with a knife‐edge and two sized notched‐edge chisel assemblies for loading. As a loading reference for the fatigue testing, macro shear bond strengths of the adhesive systems to enamel and dentin were conducted using a mold enclosure and a knife‐edge chisel assembly. The shear bond strengths with the mold enclosure using knife‐edge chisel assembly did not exhibit a significant difference between the adhesive systems for either enamel or dentin. The fatigue bond strengths of bonded specimens demonstrated significant differences when comparing the mold enclosure and non‐mold enclosure, but not between knife‐edge and notched‐edge chisel assemblies. The fatigue bond strengths of dental adhesive systems demonstrated significantly higher values when using mold‐enclosed bonded specimens than a non‐mold enclosure, regardless of type of chisel assembly.

Abstract
Complex implant therapy can include methods requiring several phases of treatment, and they are usually referred to as one-stage and two-stage approaches. The reasons for the staged approach include the extraction of non-restorable teeth. Such a treatment approach may offer a fixed provisional prosthesis during implant osseointegration that enables the patient to avoid removable prostheses. However, this case aims to demonstrate how to manage the soft tissue in the pontic region prior to immediate implant placement. A 45- years old female patient presented with non-restorable teeth from the maxillary right lateral incisor to the left lateral incisor were removed, followed by socket preservation and fixed provisional restoration from right maxillary canine to left canine. Soft tissue was contoured to achieve ovate shape by first with a tooth-supported provisional restoration from the maxillary left canine to the right canine and then by re-shaping with carbide and diamond burs; after the tissue obtained the desired architecture, implants were inserted on sites of the maxillary right lateral incisor and left central lateral incisor without immediate loading, but the same provisional fixed restoration maintained the previously contour tissue. Once implant osseointegration was achieved, screw-retained provisional restoration was placed, followed by the definitive fixed implant restoration. Because the soft tissue was previously contoured, the screw-retained implant provisional restorations maintained the tissue architecture. These initial contouring procedures provided a more predictable outcome for the final tissue contour after implants were inserted. The final re-shaping with the implant screw-retained provisional restorations was minimum, and prostheses followed the previously provided tissue architecture. Before the endosteal implants are inserted, soft-tissue contouring prior to implant placement may provide a more predictable outcome of the final tissue architecture for pontic and implant areas. The patient and clinician can evaluate the success and limitations of tissue contouring prior to implant placement. It may also shorten the time required for tissue contouring with provisional implant restorations.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the immediate shear bond strength of resin composite luting systems to tooth with or without saliva contamination in different curing modes. The Knoop hardness number of the resin composite luting agents was measured. Four combinations of resin composite luting systems were used. The shear bond strength to bovine teeth was measured with and without saliva contamination in different curing modes at different storage periods. The Knoop hardness number of the resin composite luting agents was also evaluated. Significantly lower enamel and dentin shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number values were observed in all resin composite luting systems at 5 min versus 24 h, regardless of the curing mode or saliva contamination. The influence of the curing mode of the resin composite luting systems on shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number was dependent on material. For the saliva contamination conditions, only G-CEM ONE EM did not show any significant difference in shear bond strength among the groups with and without saliva contamination, regardless of curing mode, storage period, or tooth substrate. All the resin composite luting systems showed lower shear bond strengths and Knoop hardness number values immediately after setting.

Abstract
The purpose of this study is to assess students' perception of digital waxing software for dental anatomy education. Dental students were introduced to digital waxing during a dental anatomy course, and were requested to finish a voluntary survey. Students strongly agreed (18.2%) or agreed (48.0%) with the statement "digital waxing contributed to my learning of dental anatomy", and strongly agreed (29.9%) and agreed (55.8%) with the statement "The digital waxing software helped develop my wax-up skills". The digital waxing software may be effective for dental anatomy education, but students do not believe digital waxing can be a replacement for conventional wax-up practice.

Abstract
Hypodontia is one of the most common developmental problems of human dentition. The treatment of missing maxillary central incisors is always a challenging task, often requiring a multidisciplinary approach. This case report describes such a multidisciplinary approach for a female patient with congenitally missing maxillary central incisors and class II division 1 occlusion. Significant horizontal overlap was present with class II division 1 occlusion in a patient with a history of cleft palate. Implant therapy was thereby not an option. Orthodontic treatment was provided to decrease the horizontal overlap and reposition the teeth. Esthetic crown lengthening was performed and monolithic lithium disilicate crowns were placed. Critical analysis of the treatment plan through cooperation among specialists is required to obtain the ideal result. Orthodontic treatment may be necessary to close or gain more space, followed by implant placement (if acceptable), and restorative treatment. It is important to create the treatment plan through a multidisciplinary approach involving orthodontists, surgeons, and restorative specialists before initiating treatment.

Abstract
Extreme residual ridge resorption is a challenging clinical situation for the fabrication of complete dental prostheses. Computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) complete dentures have been shown to have superior fit and material strength to conventionally fabricated dentures, but no clinical protocols have been described for cases of extreme residual ridge resorption. This report describes a workflow combining conventional and novel techniques for CAD/CAM complete dentures fabrication for atrophic alveolar ridges and demonstrates that a CAD/CAM workflow is an effective tool for solving this complex situation.

Abstract
PURPOSE The aim of this study was to investigate shade changes in fully- and pre-crystalized CAD-CAM lithium disilicate crowns after the required and additional firing processes. MATERIALS AND METHODS One hundred and five crowns of shade A1 with high translucency were milled out of CAD-CAM lithium disilicate blocks and categorized as follows (n = 15): (1) restorations fabricated from Straumann n!ce with no additional sintering process; (2) restorations fabricated from Straumann n!ce with one additional sintering process; (3) restorations fabricated from Straumann n!ce with two additional sintering processes; (4) restorations fabricated from Amber Mill with one sintering process; (5) restorations fabricated from Amber Mill with two sintering processes; (6) restorations fabricated from IPS e.max CAD with one sintering process; (7) restorations fabricated from IPS e.max CAD with two sintering processes. All restorations were evaluated with a color imaging spectrophotometer. RESULTS All restorations presented some color alteration from the original shade both after a single and after two firing processes. CONCLUSION The required and additional sintering processes for restorations fabricated with chairside CAD-CAM lithium disilicate blocks cause an alteration of the original shade selected. Shade A1 high translucency restorations tend to change to a more yellowish B1 shade after a sintering process.

Abstract
It has been well-documented that uncontaminated ground enamel provides the most predictable substrate for the bonding of ceramic veneers, and thus conservative tooth preparation with complete isolation using a rubber dam is key to the long-term success of the restorations presented with five years of follow-up. Rubber dam isolation provides several advantages to the clinician, such as preventing contamination of the working field by saliva, blood, and sulcular fluids, and improving direct visibility. However, it may be a challenge to the younger clinician to properly isolate teeth prior to bonding ceramic veneer. The present case report demonstrated the sequence and some clinical tips for a case in which the rubber dam is placed from a second premolar to the opposite second premolar and held with clamps, the rubber dam is gently invaginated into the sulcus, and clamps are selected and placed on each tooth to create an ideal situation for the adhesion of the ceramic veneer. This step-by-step sequence may help the younger clinician in understanding how to gently manage soft tissue in order to properly provide complete isolation with rubber dam for future bonding of ceramic veneers. Following these methods, the clinician can achieve complete isolation, invaginate the rubber dam in the sulcus without causing tissues to bleed, and reduce the time needed for bonding procedures.

MATERIALS AND METHODS Sixty flat samples (10 specimens/group) were fabricated from novel chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate ceramic blocks (Amber Mill, Hass Bio) with different thicknesses and with and without polishing as follows: (1) 1.0 mm thickness without polishing (1.0NoP); (2) 1.0 mm thickness with polishing (1.0Po); (3) 1.5 mm thickness without polishing (1.5NoP); (4) 1.5 mm thickness with polishing (1.5Po); (5) 2.0 mm thickness without polishing (2.0NoP); and (6) 2.0 mm thickness with polishing (2.0Po). Specimens were polished with a polishing system for lithium disilicate restorations following the manufacturer's recommendations. Light transmission was evaluated with a curing radiometer. Obtained data were subjected to two-way ANOVA followed by Tukey's post hoc tests (α = 0.05). SEM observations were conducted to evaluate surface microstructure. RESULTS The light intensity through the lithium disilicate blocks with and without polishing was 200.9 mW/cm2 (16.1%) and 194.4 mW/cm2 (15.6%) for 1.0 mm specimens, 119.3 mW/cm2 (9.5%) and 111.9 mW/cm2 (9.0%) for 1.5 mm specimens, and 102.3 mW/cm2 (8.2%) and 96.0 mW/cm2 (7.7%) for 2.0 mm specimens. SEM images showed a smoother surface with polishing compared to nonpolished specimens. CONCLUSION The thickness and polishing of the restorations were both significant influential factors in light transmission. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE The range of light transmission percentage through the novel chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate blocks was 7.7-16.1%, suggesting that light attenuation through the material may influence the polymerization reaction of resin luting cement in the bonding process.

Abstract
Objective Optimal tooth reduction is a key requirement for aesthetics, function, and the longevity of fixed restorations. Research has demonstrated that controlled and conservative tooth preparation is crucial for the long-term success of adhesive restorations. Different techniques of fabricating reduction guides have been previously reported in literature. The present technical note describes the fabrication technique and clinical application of a customized metal preparation reduction guide. Material and method Patient presented with tilted maxillary left central incisor. The flared-out part of the tooth was modified prior to veneer restoration preparation. Resin pattern reduction guide was fabricated on the diagnostic cast with a window on the tilted mesial portion of the tooth. After intraoral evaluation, resin pattern guide was casted. Metal reduction guide was place intraorally and reduction was provided on the exposed surface of the tooth. After the removal of the tilted portion, a harmonious arch form allowed the clinician to provide adequate evaluation and preparation for veneer restorations. Results The device demonstrated good practical value, allowing for selective and controlled reduction of tooth structure, and definitive protection of adjacent tooth surfaces from iatrogenic damage. The clinical outcome successfully addressed the patient's restorative and aesthetic needs, and the veneer was stable 2 years postoperatively. Conclusion Use of a metal guide assists clinicians to provide a more predictable reduction of a desired tooth surface, while decreasing the risk of compromising the other/adjacent tooth surfaces.

Abstract
OBJECTIVES The case report describes a minimally invasive, multidisciplinary approach to a single discolored anterior tooth, with internal bleaching using traditional Japanese paper (Washi), a gingivoplasty with a three-dimensional (3D) printed surgical guide, and ultrathin feldspathic porcelain veneers. Clinical consideration: The patient's primary concern was improving her smile. After clinical evaluation, internal tooth bleaching for the discolored tooth and gingivoplasty with restoration of the maxillary anterior six teeth and first premolars was recommended. The internal tooth whitening was accomplished with sodium perborate mixed with 30% hydrogen peroxide impregnated in Washi and sealed in the root canal with glass ionomer. Once the tooth bleaching was completed, the 3D printed surgical guide was placed in the patient's maxillary anterior region and used to guide soft tissue recontouring. After 6 months, ultrathin feldspathic porcelain veneers were placed. CONCLUSION Well-planned restorative procedures combining internal tooth bleaching using Washi, gingivoplasty performed with electrosurgery using a 3D printed surgical guide, and ultrathin feldspathic porcelain veneers can achieve the desired results in the esthetic zone and remain successful for 4 years.

Abstract
Introducing new technology in the dental school curriculum may face some uphill challenges navigating through university-level bureaucracy, financial ramifications, and influencing the mindset of certain faculty. A dental school that relies heavily on teaching traditional restorative procedures may particularly face many challenges to embrace new technology. The restorative department at a US dental school created a division of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) dentistry to introduce the concept of digital dentistry to dental students and faculty. This article describes methods that were adopted to improve acceptance and increase the productivity of chairside CAD/CAM restorations for both students and faculty at the dental school in US.

Abstract

However, from a professional viewpoint, the esthetic outcome using the custom zirconia abutment was superior to that using the prefabricated titanium abutment.

Abstract
PURPOSE To examine the effects of an ion-releasing filler-containing gel on the remineralization of dentin using optical coherence tomography (OCT). METHODS Dentin slabs of bovine teeth were sliced and shaped into a rectangular form. Specimens were treated with undersaturated 0.1 M lactic acid buffer solution (pH 4.75) for 10 minutes and then placed in artificial saliva (pH 7.0). This procedure was repeated three times a day for 28 days. The dentin remineralization effects of a fluoride/S-PRG filler-containing gel (PRG) and a 38% SDF solution (SDF) on dentin slabs of bovine teeth were compared. After treatment, the dentin slabs were immersed in a 0.1 M lactic acid buffer solution and then placed in artificial saliva. This procedure was repeated three times a day for 28 days. OCT imaging was conducted on the selected location of the dentin surface. The peak intensity and width at 1/e² were recorded in each of the six areas on the sample and averaged. Each group had a sample size of 10. Knoop hardness number (KHN) measurements and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) observations were also conducted. The data for each group were subjected to a one-way repeated-measures ANOVA and Tukey tests (α= 0.05). The samples were also observed using SEM. RESULTS The peak signal intensities of SDF and PRG decreased on day 7 and then slightly increased during the experimental period for the one-off application groups and then decreased for frequent-time application groups. Although the width at 1/e² in the untreated specimens decreased over the test period, SDF and PRG for the one-off application groups exhibited an increase in widths on day 7 followed by a slight decrease, whereas it increased for the frequent-time application groups. The average KHN of the dentin samples exhibited the same tendency as the width at 1/e². Closure of the dentin tubules and crystal precipitation were detected on the surface of both SDF and PRG groups. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE S-PRG filler-containing gel might have the ability to prevent dentin demineralization and could be useful for the prevention of hard-to-access lesions. This material achieved remineralization of the demineralized root dentin and had the same remineralization ability as SDF in vitro.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the dentin remineralization effect of the application of a functionalized tri-calcium phosphate (fTCP) dentifrice and a silver diamine fluoride (SDF) solution. MATERIAL AND METHODS The materials used were: a fluoride-containing dentifrice with fTCP (fTCP+), a fluoride-containing dentifrice without fTCP (fTCP-) and a 38% SDF solution. Following treatment, the dentin slabs were immersed in a 0.1-M lactic acid buffer solution and then placed in artificial saliva. This procedure was repeated three times daily for 28 days. The propagation time of longitudinal ultrasonic velocities (UV) and the Knoop hardness (KH) of the samples were measured. The samples were also observed using scanning electron microscopy. RESULTS The SDF and fTCP+ groups showed higher UV than the fTCP - group regardless of the application method. The F-SDF group at 28 days showed significantly higher UV (4121 ± 102 m/s) than the F-fTCP + group (3731 ± 65 m/s) (p < .05). The F-SDF group at 28 days showed significantly higher KH (47.4 ± 2.2) than the F-fTCP+ group (43.3 ± 1.0) and the F-fTCP - group (42.9 ± 2.1) (p < .05). Closure of the dentinal tubules and crystal precipitation was detected on the surface of the fTCP+ group to a greater extent than the fTCP - group. CONCLUSIONS The fTCP-containing dentifrice and SDF solution effectively enhanced bovine dentin remineralization.

Abstract
PURPOSE To investigate the changes in the dentin bond strengths of universal adhesives during the early phase and evaluate the effect of a double-layer adhesive application on the performance of the dentin bond. MATERIALS AND METHODS Three universal adhesives and a two-step self-etch adhesive were employed to ascertain the shear bond strengths (SBS) of specimens to bovine dentin with the use of the etch-and-rinse or self-etch mode. The specimens were further divided into two groups based on adhesive application in a single or a double layer. The bonded specimens were stored in distilled water at 37°C for 5 min or 1, 6, 12, or 24 h prior to SBS measurement and the adhesives' Knoop hardness number (KHN). RESULTS All the adhesives showed increased SBS with prolonged storage periods regardless of the adhesive layer (single or double) or etching mode. Most universal adhesives in the double adhesive layer groups showed significantly higher SBS than single adhesive layer groups for the same storage period. All the adhesives also showed increased KHN with increased storage period. CONCLUSION The SBS and KHN values of the adhesives increased with increasing storage duration over a 24-h period. Double adhesive layer application mediated increased dentin bond strength in the early phase.

Abstract
This study aimed to evaluate the filler contents (FCs), flexural properties, depth of cure (DOC), wear resistance, and handling properties of different low-viscosity bulk-fill resin composites (LVBRCs) and to determine the correlations between the tested parameters. Six LVBRCs, Beautifil-Bulk (BBF), Bulk Base Hard (BBH), Bulk Base Medium (BBM), Filtek Bulk-Fill Flowable Restorative (FBF), G-ænial Bulk Injectable (GBI), and SDR flow+ Bulk-Fill Flowable (SDR) were used. The DOC and flexural property tests were conducted according to the ISO 4049 specifications. The flexural strength, elastic modulus, and resilience were determined in 12 specimens that were obtained from each of the 6 materials. Sliding-impact-wear testing was conducted by evaluating the wear facets of the specimens using a noncontact profilometer and by confocal laser scanning microscopy. The handling properties of the LVBRC was assessed via extrusion force and thread formation measurements. The DOC for the majority of the LVBRCs was approximately 4 mm. Although the FCs and mechanical properties were material dependent, some LVBRCs exhibited excellent flexural properties and wear resistance. The LVBRCs demonstrated a wide range of extrusion force and thread formation. Regarding the correlations between the tested parameters, extremely strong negative and positive correlations were observed for the DOC versus extrusion force, flexural strength versus elastic modulus, maximum depth versus volume loss, and maximum depth versus thread formation. In addition, strong correlations between FCs and DOC, resilience, wear resistance, and extrusion force were observed.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The aim of this study was to determine the flexural properties and surface characteristics of a structural colored resin composite after different finishing and polishing methods, in comparison to those of conventional resin composites. METHODS AND MATERIALS A structural color resin composite, Omnichroma (OM, Tokuyama Corp, Chiyoda City, Tokyo, Japan), and two comparison resin composites, Filtek Supreme Ultra (FS, 3M, St Paul, MN, USA) and Tetric EvoCeram (TE, Ivoclar Vivadent, Schaan, Liechtenstein), were used. The flexural properties of the resin composites were determined in accordance with the ISO 4049 specifications. For surface properties, 70 polymerized specimens of each resin composite were prepared and divided into seven groups of 10. Surface roughness (Sa), gloss (GU), and surface free energy (SFE) were investigated after the following finishing and polishing methods. Three groups of specimens were finished with a superfine-grit diamond bur (SFD), and three with a tungsten carbide bur (TCB). After finishing, one of the two remaining groups was polished with a one-step silicone point (CMP), and the other with an aluminum oxide flexible disk (SSD). A group ground with SiC 320-grit was set as a baseline. RESULTS The average flexural strength ranged from 116.6 to 142.3 MPa in the following order with significant differences between each value: FS > TE > OM. The average E ranged from 6.8 to 13.2 GPa in the following order with significant differences between each value: FS > TE > OM. The average R ranged from 0.77 to 1.01 MJ/mm3 in the following order: OM > FS > TE. The Sa values of the OM groups polished with CMP and SSD were found to be significantly lower than those of the other resin composites, regardless of the finishing method. The GU values appeared to be dependent on the material and the finishing method used. The OM specimens polished with SSD showed significantly higher GU values than those polished with CMP. Most of the resin composites polished with SSD demonstrated significantly higher γS values compared to the other groups. Extremely strong negative correlations between Sa and GU in the combined data from the three resin composites and each resin composite and between Sa and γS in the OM specimens were observed; GU showed a strong positive correlation with γS in the same material. CONCLUSION These findings indicate that both flexural and surface properties are material dependent. Furthermore, the different finishing and polishing methods used in this study were observed to affect the Sa, GU, and SFE of the resin composites.

Abstract
To evaluate the flexural and bonding properties, marginal adaptation, and polymerization shrinkage in flowable composite restorations and their relationships, four new generation flowable composites, one conventional, and one bulk-fill flowable composite were used in this study. Flexural properties of the composites and shear bond strength to enamel and dentin for flowable restorations were measured immediately and 24 h after polymerization. Marginal adaptation, polymerization shrinkage, and stress were also investigated immediately after polymerization. The flexural properties, and bond strength of the flowable composites to enamel and dentin were much lower immediately after polymerization than at 24 h, regardless of the type of the composite. Polymerization shrinkage and stress varied depending on the material, and bulk-fill flowable composite showed much lower values than the others. The marginal adaptation and polymerization shrinkage of the composites appeared to have a much stronger correlation with a shear bond strength to dentin than to enamel. The weak mechanical properties and bond strengths of flowable composites in the early stage after polymerization must be taken into account when using them in the clinic. In addition, clinicians should be aware that polymerization shrinkage of flowable composites can still lead to the formation of gaps and failure of adaptation to the cavity regardless of the type of composite.

Abstract
PURPOSE To evaluate the influence of light irradiation on the clinical efficiency of an in-office whitening agent. METHODS The in-office whitening agent (Opalescence Boost 35%) was used in this study. Two whitening regimens were evaluated on maxillary anterior teeth: (1) with light irradiation; and (2) without light irradiation. The ΔE*, changes of L*, a*, b*, and the best shade match on the central incisor before, immediately after, and 6 months after whitening procedures were evaluated using a dental spectrophotometer. RESULTS The ΔE and shade had no significant differences with or without light irradiation. In addition, the ΔE, changes of L*, a*, b*, and shade did not change over 6 months after bleaching at a level detectable to the naked eye. The results suggested that the in-office whitening agent using 35% hydrogen peroxide without photocatalysts can improve tooth color with or without light irradiation for 6 months after whitening. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE In office whitening using 35% hydrogen peroxide without photocatalysts should be considered as a good treatment option for vital teeth whitening.

Abstract
AIM The clinical report describes how chairside intraoral scanning can be performed while a rubber dam is in place prior to fabrication of a computer-assisted design and computer-assisted manufacture (CAD/CAM) ceramic restoration. BACKGROUND Recently, combining a chairside CAD/CAM system with rubber dam isolation in place could be used in order to both speed up the restorative process and avoid any contamination to abutment surface, which are the positive effects to patients and clinicians. Unfortunately, manufacturers do not provide guidance on how to make use of chairside CAD/CAM restorations while rubber dam isolation is in place. CASE DESCRIPTION The chief complaint of necessitating a crown after endodontic therapy and the patient was digital restorative procedure in single visit. Intraoral scanning with rubber dam isolation in place was planned and successfully completed in order to fabricate a chairside CAD/CAM ceramic crown. The software was able to interpose the scan of the prepped tooth with rubber dam isolation into a scan made without the rubber dam from which the tooth had been erased. CONCLUSION Chairside CAD/CAM system can be used to scan, design, and fabricate crowns while rubber dam is kept intraorally. Initial scan without rubber dam is needed in order to interpose the second scan with rubber dam in place. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE Combining the advantages of intraoral scanning and rubber dam isolation in place for the fabrication of a chairside CAD/CAM ceramic crown in a single visit is feasible.

Abstract
PURPOSE To determine the fracture resistance of chairside computer-aided design and computer-assisted manufacturing (CAD/CAM) lithium disilicate full coverage crowns and two different designs of overlay restorations for premolars. MATERIALS AND METHODS CAD/CAM lithium disilicate (IPS e.max CAD for CEREC/HT A1 C14, Ivoclar Vivadent) restorations (15 specimens/group) with 1.5 mm occlusal thickness and 1.0 mm chamfer were designed and fabricated with a chairside CAD/CAM system (CEREC, Dentsply Sirona). The restorations were prepared in three different designs: (1) full coverage crowns, (2) overlays with the margin located 2 mm above the gingiva, and (3) overlays with the margin located 4 mm above the gingiva. Restorations were cemented using conventional resin luting cement (Multilink, Ivoclar Vivadent) with primer system (Monobond Plus, Ivoclar Vivadent) to resin printed dies, load cycled (2,000,000 load cycles at 1 Hz with 275 N force), and then finally loaded with a steel indenter until failure. Scanning electron microscopy observations of fractured surfaces were also conducted. Group results were analyzed with one-way analysis of variance, and the medians were evaluated independently with Kruskal-Wallis. RESULTS The fracture force of CAD/CAM lithium disilicate restorations was significantly different (p < 0.001) depending on the design of the restoration. Full coverage crowns showed significantly higher force to fracture (1018.8 N) than both types of overlays (p = 0.002 for overlay 2.0 mm and p < 0.001 for overlay 4.0 mm above gingiva). Among the two overlays, the restoration with the margin located 2 mm above the gingiva showed significantly higher fracture force (813.8 N) than the overlay with margin at 4 mm above the gingiva (436.1 N; p < 0.001). The fracture appearance of the crowns was much more complex than that of the overlay restorations. CONCLUSIONS Full coverage chairside CAD/CAM lithium disilicate premolar crown showed higher fracture resistance than overlay restorations. Abstract
OBJECTIVE This study investigated the handling and surface characteristics of universal resin composites and determined the interrelations among the composites' handling, mechanical, and physical properties. METHODS Five recently introduced universal resin composites were tested. Twelve specimens per material were used to measure the stiffness and stickiness (handling properties) of the resin composite pastes. Additionally, surface properties (Knoop hardness number [KHN], surface roughness [Sa], surface gloss [SG], water contact angle [CA], and surface free energy [SFE]) of cured resin composites were determined in 12 specimens per material immediately after preparation (baseline) and after subjection to thermal cycles (TCs). RESULTS Handling and surface properties of the resin composites were material dependent. All the resin composites showed significantly lower KHN in the post-TC subgroups than that in the baseline subgroups. However, the influence of TC on the other surface properties was dependent on the material used. Some resin composites did not indicate any significant differences in Sa, SG, or CA between the baseline and post-TC groups. SIGNIFICANCE Although the resin composites in the baseline groups presented with different handling and surface properties, the surface properties of most of the composites were significantly affected by TC. Extremely strong positive or negative correlations were observed between stiffness and stickiness, KHN and Sa, KHN and SG, Sa and SG, and CA and SFE. Most correlations between the handling and surface properties were weak. Therefore, the selection of resin composites in clinical situations should be based on comprehensive consideration of their properties.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of five different polishing systems on a computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network restoration with nanoscale assessment using atomic force microscopy (AFM) and visual assessment performed by dental school senior students and faculty members. METHOD Forty-eight full coverage crowns were milled out of polymer-infiltrated ceramic-network CAD/CAM blocks (Vita Enamic) for polishing with one company proprietary, two ceramic and two composite polishing systems. The prepared crowns were divided into six groups: (1) no polishing (control); (2) polishing with Vita Enamic Polishing Kit (VEna); (3) polishing with Shofu Porcelain Laminate Polishing Kit (SCer); (4) polishing with Brasseler Dialite Feather lite All- Ceramic Adjusting & Polishing System (BCer); (5) polishing with Shofu Composite Polishing Kit (SCom); and (6) polishing with Brasseler Composite Polishing Kit (BCom). The polished crown surface topography was observed, and surface roughness and area were measured with AFM. In addition, polished crowns were visually assessed by 15 senior dental students and 15 dental school faculty members. RESULTS All polishing treatments significantly reduced the surface roughness and area of the crown compared with the control. SCom and BCom showed significantly higher surface area than VEna, and the SCer and BCer groups were intermediate, showing no significant difference from either VEna or SCom and BCom. There were no significant differences in surface roughness between any of the systems. Dental students and faculty members classified the groups polished with VEna, SCer, and BCer groups as clinically acceptable, and they selected BCer group as the best polished restorations and the control group as the least polished restorations. CONCLUSIONS Ceramic and composite polishing systems produced similar polishing results as that observed using a company proprietary polishing system. However, effectiveness for polishing using a company proprietary and ceramic polishing system tends to be higher than composite polishing systems.

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to evaluate the bonding and wear properties of self-adhesive flowable restorative materials. Five self-adhesive flowable restorative materials were used. The study parameters were: (i) shear bond strengths; (ii) microleakage; (iii) occlusal wear; and (iv) qualitative evaluation of the bonding interface. The range of shear bond strengths of the materials was as follows: 7.4-12.2 MPa to ground enamel, 22.5-32.5 MPa to etched enamel, and 1.3-4.2 MPa to dentin. The microleakage scores of the materials did not show any statistically significant differences regardless of the presence or absence of etching. The wear facets on the materials showed 0.099-0.447 mm3 of volume loss and 148.6-365.3 µm maximum depth, with statistically significant differences between materials. Scanning electron microscopic images of the interfaces of the materials showed good adaptation regardless of substrate. The bonding and wear properties of self-adhesive flowable restorative materials were still limited and showed lower values than previously reported results for nanofilled composites with an adhesive system. Selective enamel etching can improve the bonding performance of these materials.

Abstract
Objective: The study aims to evaluate the emotional, behavioural, and social effects of single or multiple anterior tooth loss. It also compares the effectiveness of the removable and fixed prosthesis to address the impact of anterior tooth loss. Material and Methods: The study was carried out on 70 subjects who presented to the Department of Prosthetic Dental Sciences. A questionnaire was distributed and the data were statistically analyzed using SPSS version 18.0 and values less than 0.05 % were considered statistically significant. Results: The participant’s difficulty to accept loss of their anterior tooth, embarrassment and confidence were changed significantly after wearing the prosthesis (P< 0.05). Moreover, fixed partial denture had more effect than removal partial denture. It was claimed by 62.9% of the participants that they were not prepared for the effect of tooth loss and 47.1% of them thought that a prior explanation from the dentist would have helped them overcome their fear of losing their teeth. Conclusion: The maximum impact of anterior tooth loss was felt on confidence followed by embarrassment. The participants felt more comfortable after wearing their prosthesis. Fixed partial denture had more effect than removable partial denture.

Abstract
This study investigates the flexural properties, Knoop hardness number (KHN), and wear behavior of computer-aided design and computer-aided manufacturing (CAD/CAM) resin blocks and compares these values with those of conventional resin composites for direct restoration (RCDs). Four CAD/CAM resin blocks and two RCDs are compared. Ten specimens per material are used to obtain the flexural properties according to ISO 6872 specifications, and five specimens per material are used for KHN measurement. For sliding impact wear testing, twelve specimens are prepared. Confocal laser scanning microscopy (LSM) is used to determine maximum facet depth and volume loss. Polished material surfaces and worn surfaces after wear testing are observed using scanning electron microscopy and LSM. While measured flexural properties and KHN are found to be material-dependent, CAD/CAM resin blocks exhibit higher wear resistance than RCDs. CAD/CAM resin blocks polymerized at high-pressure and high-temperature are found to exhibit wear behaviors far superior to those of RCDs.

Abstract
This study aimed at determining the enamel bond durability of universal adhesives to intact enamel (IE) and ground enamel (GE) in different etching modes under thermal cycling (TC) and fatigue stresses. Two universal adhesives and a two-step self-etch adhesive were used. Enamel specimens were divided into four groups by treatment: (i) GE in etch-and-rinse, (ii) IE in etch-and-rinse, (iii) GE in self-etch, and (iv) IE in self-etch. Bonded specimens were subjected to TC, and then shear bond strengths (SBS) were conducted. SBS tests were also conducted after storage in 37°C water for 24 h (baseline). For shear fatigue strength (SFS) testing, bonded specimens were subjected to fatigue stress at a frequency of 10 Hz for 50,000 cycles. At baseline, all adhesives showed significantly higher SBS values with GE than IE in self-etch mode in contrast to in etch-and-rinse mode. After TC, the universal adhesives with IE showed lower SBS values than the baseline, regardless of the etching mode. Universal adhesives showed significantly lower SFS values with IE in etch-and-rinse, but not in self-etch mode. Phosphoric acid pre-etching or grinding of the aprismatic enamel may be helpful in establishing reliable initial and long-term bonds to enamel when using universal adhesives in self-etch mode.
