A text mining and network analysis of topics and trends in major nursing research journals

AIM

This study is set to determine the main topics of the nursing field and to show the changing perspectives over time by analysing the abstracts of several major nursing research journals using text mining methodology.

Text mining and network analysis.

METHODS

Text analysis combines automatic and manual operations to identify patterns in unstructured data. Detailed searches covering 1998-2021 were conducted in PubMed archives to collect articles from six nursing journals: Journal of Advanced Nursing, International Journal of Nursing Studies, Western Journal of Nursing Research, Nursing Research, Journal of Nursing Scholarship and Research in Nursing and Health. This study uses a four-phase text mining and network approach, gathering text data and cleaning, preprocessing, text analysis and advanced analyses. Analyses and data visualization were performed using Endnote, JMP, Microsoft Excel, Tableau and VOSviewer versions. From six journals, 17,581 references in PubMed were combined into one EndNote file. Due to missing abstract information, 2496 references were excluded from the study. The remaining references (n = 15,085) were used for the text mining analyses.

RESULTS

Eighteen subjects were determined into two main groups; research method topics and nursing research topics. The most striking topics are qualitative research, concept analysis, advanced practice in the downtrend, and literature search, statistical analysis, randomized control trials, quantitative research, nurse practice environment, risk assessment and nursing science. According to the network analysis results, nursing satisfaction and burnout and nursing practice environment are highly correlated and represent 10% of the total corpus. This study contributes in various ways to the field of nursing research enhanced by text mining. The study findings shed light on researchers becoming more aware of the latest research status, sub-fields and trends over the years, identifying gaps and planning future research agendas. Nursing-sensitive indicators for nursing care: A systematic review (1997-2017)

To provide a systematic review of the literature from 1997 to 2017 on nursing-sensitive indicators.

DESIGN

A qualitative design with a deductive approach was used.

DATA SOURCES

Original and Grey Literature references from Cochrane Library, Medline/PubMed, Embase, and CINAHL, Google Scholar Original and Grey Literature.

REVIEW METHODS

Quality assessment was performed using the NIH Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies.

RESULTS

A total of 3,633 articles were identified, and thirty-nine studies met the inclusion criteria. The quantitative assessment of investigated relationships in these studies suggests that nursing staffing, mortality, and nosocomial infections were the most frequently reported nursing-sensitive indicators.

CONCLUSION

This review provides a comprehensive list of nursing-sensitive indicators, their frequency of use, and the associations between these indicators and various outcome variables. Stakeholders of nursing research may use the findings to streamline the indicator development efforts and standardization of nursing-sensitive indicators.

This review provides evidence-based results that health organizations can benefit from nursing care quality.

Colour Doppler assessment of blood flow in eyes with central retinal vein occlusion

PURPOSE

To assess the blood flow changes in eyes with central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO) and compare these values with values of fellow eyes and eyes of normal subjects.

METHODS

25 eyes of 25 consecutive newly diagnosed patients with CRVO comprised the study group. Their fellow eyes and those of 25 healthy subjects were the control group. All patients underwent a complete ophthalmological examination. Eyes with CRVO were classified into two groups as non-ischaemic and ischaemic by fundus fluorescein angiography. Colour Doppler imaging was performed with a Toshiba Sonolayer SSH-140A and 7.5-MHz linear array probe. Maximum systolic velocity (V(max)), end-diastolic velocity (V(min)) and resistive index (R(i)) values were noted for each of the central retinal artery (CRA), central retinal vein (CRV) and ophthalmic artery (OA). These parameters were compared with those of the fellow eyes and both eyes of the control group.

RESULTS

Mean ages were 63.55 and 61.45 years in the CRVO and control groups, respectively. Age and sex distributions were statistically identical in both groups. When we compared the eyes with CRVO to the control group, no statistically significant difference existed between the two groups with regard to the V(min) and R(i )values of the CRA and CRV. However, V(max ) values of the CRA and CRV were significantly lower in CRVO eyes when compared to the control group. The CRVO group and control group had similar V(max), V(min ) and R(i) values for the OA. Only the V(max) was significantly lower in the CRV in eyes with CRVO when compared to the unaffected fellow eyes. No statistically significant difference could be detected between any of the parameters of CRA, CRV and OA of the ischaemic and non-ischaemic CRVO groups.

CONCLUSIONS

More data on broader series need to be obtained in order to decide on the practical use of colour Doppler imaging in the differentiation of ischaemic eyes from non-ischaemic eyes in CRVO.

Factors predicting future time orientation for romantic relationships with the opposite sex

The author examines the possible connection of predictors of future time orientation to romantic relationships with the opposite sex using the Future Time Orientation in Romantic Relationships Scale (FTORR; B. Oner, 2000b). The variables suggested as correlates with FTORR scores in B. Oner's (2000a) study were subjected to regression analysis. The results indicated that relationship satisfaction and an eagerness to break up negative relationships were negatively related to FTORR scores, whereas being a woman, experiencing jealousy, and the degree of selectivity in choosing a dating partner were positively related to FTORR scores. Caution and relationship commitment both predicted FTORR scores through the mediating effect of relationship satisfaction. The author discusses the implications of the findings.

Innovation and adaptation in a Turkish sample: a preliminary study

The aim of this study was to examine the representations of adaptation and innovation among adults in Turkey. Semi-structured interviews were carried out with a sample of 20 Turkish adults (10 men, 10 women) from various occupations. The participants' ages ranged from 21 to 58 years. Results of content analysis showed that the representation of innovation varied with the type of context. Innovation was not preferred within the family and interpersonal relationship contexts, whereas it was relatively more readily welcomed within the contexts of work, science, and technology. This finding may indicate that the concept of innovation that is assimilated in traditional Turkish culture has limits. Contents of the interviews were also analyzed with respect to M. J. Kirton's (1976) subscales of originality, efficiency, and rule-group conformity. The participants favored efficient innovators, whereas they thought that the risk of failure was high in cases of inefficient innovation. The reasons for and indications of the representations of innovativeness among Turkish people are discussed in relation to their social structure and cultural expectations.

Relationship satisfaction and dating experience: factors affecting future time orientation in relationships with the opposite sex

This study was conducted to examine the effects of relationship satisfaction and dating experience on future time orientation in relationships with the opposite sex. Data from a sample of 226 undergraduate students from Middle East Technical University indicated that individuals who were highly satisfied in their relationships with the opposite sex tended to seek temporary relationships more and tended to be less future focused in their relationships than those who were less satisfied. Results also indicated that present dating experience did not show any significant effect on future time orientation; however, previous dating experience did show an effect in the interaction with relationship satisfaction and different factors of future time orientation. Implications of these results are discussed.

Preferences and expectations of innovator-ritualist types in relation to sex of university students in a Turkish sample

The aim of this study was whether there is a prevailing representation of Innovators versus Ritualists which differs in both expected frequency and preference of the types for the two sexes. 213 Turkish undergraduate students were given Ritualist and Innovator vignettes in a random order and asked to state the expected frequency of the vignettes if each described a male or female. In addition to this, they stated their preferences for each sex in vignettes. Analysis showed that women are expected more frequently to be Ritualist than men, and men are expected to be more frequently Innovators than women. Moreover, regardless of sex, people prefer Innovators to Ritualists, while they state that they expect to encounter Ritualists more frequently than Innovators in Turkish society. Research implications and suggestions for study are discussed.

Future time orientation and relationships with the opposite sex

This study is an examination of future time orientation (FTO) and relationship satisfaction. Undergraduate students (N = 244) from Middle East Technical University were given a general FTO scale developed by T. Gjesme (1979) and a scale developed by this study's researcher to measure FTO in terms of romantic relationships. Participants were asked to rate their relationship satisfaction on a 9-point Likert-type scale. Although a general FTO was adaptive in terms of romantic relationships, a high concern for future commitment to a romantic relationship had a negative effect on reported relationship satisfaction. Research implications and suggestions for future studies are discussed.

A study on the carotid artery intima-media thickness and its association with lipid peroxidation

High resolution B-mode ultrasonography of the carotid arteries has been used to investigate the signs of early atherosclerotic vessel wall disease by measuring the intima-media thickness (IMT). We examined the association between IMT and lipid peroxidation and found IMT to be increased in a group of patients with respect to controls (1.430+/-0.341 mm versus 0.703+/-0.201 mm, P < 0.001). Plasma and erythrocyte malondialdehyde (MDA) levels were also significantly higher (P<0.001) and the erythrocyte reduced glutathione (GSH) levels were significantly lower (P <0.001) in the patients with respect to the controls. In the groups of patients there was no significant correlation between the mean IMT and the plasma and erythrocyte MDA levels or the erythrocyte GSH levels. In conclusion determination of lipid peroxides would be especially important and advisable in patients with increased carotid IMT. Type II diabetes and hypertension were also associated with increased IMT.

Case report: a surgical and prosthetic approach to combination syndrome presenting in a patient with craniofacial dysostosis (Crouzon syndrome)

A case of combined local surgical and prosthetic treatment in a patient with craniofacial dysostosis (Crouzon Syndrome) is described. The patient had atrophy and anterior fibrous replacement of the edentulous maxilla opposing natural mandibular anterior teeth and a lower removable partial denture. Initial prosthetic treatment alone was unsuccessful. The surgical management comprised augmentation of the maxilla with resorbable hydroxyapatite, in conjunction with a guided tissue regeneration technique and vestibuloplasty. This enabled conventional prosthetic management postoperatively to achieve an acceptable functional and aesthetic result.

Solitary plexiform neurofibroma of the oral cavity A case report

A solitary plexiform neurofibroma localized on the vestibular side of the right mandible in a 37-year-old woman is described. The tumor was excised, and there was no recurrence after 2 years.
