Modification of Living Diatom, Thalassiosira weissflogii, with a Calcium Precursor through a Calcium Uptake Mechanism: A Next Generation Biomaterial for Advanced Delivery Systems

The diatom's frustule, characterized by its rugged and porous exterior, exhibits a remarkable biomimetic morphology attributable to its highly ordered pores, extensive surface area, and unique architecture. Despite these advantages, the toxicity and nonbiodegradable nature of silica-based organisms pose a significant challenge when attempting to utilize these organisms as nanotopographically functionalized microparticles in the realm of biomedicine. In this study, we addressed this limitation by modulating the chemical composition of diatom microparticles by modulating the active silica metabolic uptake mechanism while maintaining their intricate three-dimensional architecture through calcium incorporation into living diatoms. Here, the diatom Thalassiosira weissflogii was chemically modified to replace its silica composition with a biodegradable calcium template, while simultaneously preserving the unique three-dimensional (3D) frustule structure with hierarchical patterns of pores and nanoscale architectural features, which was evident by the deposition of calcium as calcium carbonate. Calcium hydroxide is incorporated into the exoskeleton through the active mechanism of calcium uptake via a carbon-concentrating mechanism, without altering the microstructure. Our findings suggest that calcium-modified diatoms hold potential as a nature-inspired delivery system for immunotherapy through antibody-specific binding.

Piezoelectric Peptide Nanotube Substrate Sensors Activated through Sound Wave Energy

The use of sustainable and safe materials is increasingly in demand for the creation of photonic-based technology. Piezoelectric peptide nanotubes make up a class of safe and sustainable materials. We show that these materials can generate piezoelectric charge through the deformation of oriented molecular dipoles when the tube length is flexed through the application of sound energy. Through the combination of peptide nanotubes with plasmon active nanomaterials, harvesting of low-frequency acoustic sound waves was achieved. This effect was applied to boost surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal detection of analytes, including glucose. This work demonstrates the potential of utilizing sound to boost sensing by using piezoelectric materials.

Evidence of the Monopolar-Dipolar Crossover Regime: A Multiscale Study of Ferroelastic Domains by In Situ Microscopy Techniques

The elastic interaction between kinks (and antikinks) within domain walls plays a pivotal role in shaping the domain structure, and their dynamics. In bulk materials, kinks interact as elastic monopoles, dependent on the distance between walls (d-1) and typically characterized by a rigid and straight domain configuration. In this work the evolution of the domain structure is investigated, as the sample size decreases, by the means of in situ heating microscopy techniques on free-standing samples. As the sample size decreases, a significant transformation is observed: domain walls exhibit pronounced curvature, accompanied by an increase in both domain wall and junction density. This transformation is attributed to the pronounced influence of kinks, inducing sample warping, where "dipole-dipole" interactions are dominant (d-2). Moreover, a critical thickness range that delineates a crossover between the monopolar and dipolar regimens is experimentally identified and corroborated by atomic simulations. These findings are relevant for in situ TEM studies and for the development of novel devices based on free-standing ferroic thin films and nanomaterials.

Structure-dynamics correlations in composite PF127-PEG-based hydrogels; cohesive/hydrophobic interactions determine phase and rheology and identify the role of micelle concentration in controlling 3D extrusion printability

A library of composite polymer networks (CPNs) were formed by combining Pluronic F127, as the primary gelator, with a range of di-acrylate functionalised PEG polymers, which tune the rheological properties and provide UV crosslinkability. A coarse-grained sol-gel room temperature phase diagram was constructed for the CPN library, which identifies PEG-dependent disruption of micelles as leading to liquefication. Small angle X-ray scattering and rheological measurements provide detailed insight into; (i) micelle-micelle ordering; (ii) micelle-micelle disruption, and; (iii) acrylate-micelle disruption; with contributions that depend on composition, including weak PEG chain length and end group effects. The influence of composition on 3D extrusion printability through modulation of the cohesive/hydrophobic interactions was assessed. It was found that only micelle content provides consistent changes in printing fidelity, controlled largely by printing conditions (pressure and feed rate). Finally, the hydrogels were shown to be UV photo-crosslinkable, which further improves fidelity and structural integrity, and usefully reduces the mesh size. Our results provide a guide for design of 3D-printable CPN inks for future biomedical applications.

Reproducible Synthesis of Biocompatible Albumin Nanoparticles Designed for Intra-articular Administration of Celecoxib to Treat Osteoarthritis

Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most common form of arthritis, with intra-articular (IA) delivery of therapeutics being the current best option to treat pain and inflammation. However, IA delivery is challenging due to the rapid clearance of therapeutics from the joint and the need for repeated injections. Thus, there is a need for long-acting delivery systems that increase the drug retention time in joints with the capacity to penetrate OA cartilage. As pharmaceutical utility also demands that this is achieved using biocompatible materials that provide colloidal stability, our aim was to develop a nanoparticle (NP) delivery system loaded with the COX-2 inhibitor celecoxib that can meet these criteria. We devised a reproducible and economical method to synthesize the colloidally stable albumin NPs loaded with celecoxib without the use of any of the following conditions: high temperatures at which albumin denaturation occurs, polymer coatings, oils, Class 1/2 solvents, and chemical protein cross-linkers. The spherical NP suspensions were biocompatible, monodisperse with average diameters of 72 nm (ideal for OA cartilage penetration), and they were stable over 6 months at 4 °C. Moreover, the NPs loaded celecoxib at higher levels than those required for the therapeutic response in arthritic joints. For these reasons, they are the first of their kind. Labeled NPs were internalized by primary human articular chondrocytes cultured from the knee joints of OA patients. The NPs reduced the concentration of inflammatory mediator prostaglandin E2 released by the primaries, an indication of retained bioactivity following NP synthesis. Similar results were observed in lipopolysaccharide-stimulated human THP-1 monocytes. The IA administration of these NPs is expected to avoid side-effects associated with oral administration of celecoxib and to maintain a high local concentration in the knee joint over a sustained period. They are now ready for evaluation by IA administration in animal models of OA.

Magnetic Chitosan Bionanocomposite Films as A Versatile Platform for Biomedical Hyperthermia

Responsive magnetic nanomaterials offer significant advantages for innovative therapies, for instance in cancer treatments that exploit on-demand delivery on alternating magnetic field (AMF) stimulus. In this work, biocompatible magnetic bionanocomposite films are fabricated from chitosan by film casting with incorporation of magnetite nanoparticles (MNPs) produced by facile one pot synthesis. The influence of synthesis conditions and MNP concentration on the films heating efficiency and heat dissipation are evaluated, through spatio-temporally mapping of the surface temperature changes by video-thermography. The cast films have a thickness below 100 μm and upon exposure to AMF (663 kHz, 12.8 kA m-1 ) induce exceptionally strong heating, reaching a maximum temperature increase of 82°C within 270 s irradiation. Further, we demonstrate that the films can serve as substrates that supply heat for multiple hyperthermia scenarios, including: (i) non-contact automated heating of cell culture medium; (ii) heating of gelatine-based hydrogels of different shapes, and (iii) killing cancerous melanoma cells. Role of pH and Crosslinking Ions on Cell Viability and Metabolic Activity in Alginate-Gelatin 3D Prints

Alginate-gelatin hydrogels are extensively used in bioengineering. However, despite different formulations being used to grow different cell types in vitro, their pH and its effect, together with the crosslinking ions of these formulations, are still infrequently assessed. In this work, we study how these elements can affect hydrogel stability and printability and influence cell viability and metabolism on the resulting 3D prints. Our results show that both the buffer pH and crosslinking ion (Ca2+ or Ba2+) influence the swelling and degradation rates of prints. Moreover, buffer pH influenced the printability of hydrogel in the air but did not when printed directly in a fluid-phase CaCl2 or BaCl2 crosslinking bath. In addition, both U2OS and NIH/3T3 cells showed greater cell metabolic activity on one-layer prints crosslinked with Ca2+. In addition, Ba2+ increased the cell death of NIH/3T3 cells while having no effect on U2OS cell viability. The pH of the buffer also had an important impact on the cell behavior. U2OS cells showed a 2.25-fold cell metabolism increase on one-layer prints prepared at pH 8.0 in comparison to those prepared at pH 5.5, whereas NIH/3T3 cells showed greater metabolism on one-layer prints with pH 7.0. Finally, we observed a difference in the cell arrangement of U2OS cells growing on prints prepared from hydrogels with an acidic buffer in comparison to cells growing on those prepared using a neutral or basic buffer. These results show that both pH and the crosslinking ion influence hydrogel strength and cell behavior.

Electromechanical Coupling in Collagen Measured under Increasing Relative Humidity

The functional role of collagen piezoelectricity has been under debate since the discovery of piezoelectricity in bone in 1957. The possibility that piezoelectricity plays a role in bone remodeling has generated interest in the investigation of this effect in relevant physiological conditions; however, there are conflicting reports as to whether collagen is piezoelectric in a humid environment. In macroscale measurements, the piezoelectricity in hydrated tendon has been shown to be insignificant compared to dehydrated tendon, whereas, at the nanoscale, the piezoelectric effect has been observed in both dry and wet bone using piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM). In this work, the electromechanical properties of type I collagen from a rat tail tendon have been investigated at the nanoscale as a function of humidity using lateral PFM (LPFM) for the first time. The relative humidity (RH) was varied from 10% to 70%, allowing the piezoelectric behavior to be studied dry, humid, as well as in the hydrated range for collagen in physiological bone (12% moisture content, corresponding to 40-50% RH). The results show that collagen piezoresponse can be measured across the humidity range studied, suggesting that piezoelectricity remains a property of collagen at a biologically relevant humidity.

Cycle-dependent morphology and surface potential of germanium nanowire anode electrodes

Germanium nanowire (GeNW) electrodes have shown great promise as high-power, fast-charging alternatives to silicon-based electrodes, owing to their vastly improved Li ion diffusion, electron mobility and ionic conductivity. Formation of the solid electrolyte interphase (SEI) on the anode surface is critical to electrode performance and stability but is not completely understood for NW anodes. Here, a systematic study characterizing pristine and cycled GeNWs in charged and discharged states with SEI layer present and removed is performed using Kelvin probe force microscopy in air. Correlating changes in the morphology of the GeNW anodes with contact potential difference mapping at different cycles provides insight into SEI layer formation and growth, and the effect of the SEI on battery performance.

Controlled degradation of polycaprolactone-based micropillar arrays

Herein we demonstrate the fabrication of arrays of micropillars, achieved through the combination of direct laser writing and nanoimprint lithography. By combining two diacrylate monomers, polycaprolactone dimethacrylate (PCLDMA) and 1,6-hexanediol diacrylate (HDDA), two copolymer formulations that, owing to the varying ratios of the hydrolysable ester functionalities present in the polycaprolactone moiety, can be degraded in the presence of base in a controllable manner. As such, the degradation of the micropillars can be tuned over several days as a function of PCLDMA concentration within the copolymer formulations, and the topography greatly varied over a short space of time, as visualised using scanning electron microscopy and atomic force microscopy. Crosslinked neat HDDA was used as a control material, demonstrating that the presence of the PCL was responsible for the ability of the microstructures to degrade in the controlled manner. In addition, the mass loss of the crosslinked materials was minimal, demonstrating the degradation of microstructured surfaces without loss of bulk properties was possible. Moreover, the compatibility of these crosslinked materials with mammalian cells was explored. The influence of both indirect and direct contact of the materials with A549 cells was assessed by profiling indices reflective of cytotoxicity such as morphology, adhesion, metabolic activity, oxidative balance, and release of injury markers. No significant changes in the aforementioned profile were observed in the cells cultured under these conditions for up to 72 h, with the cell-material interaction suggesting these materials may have potential in microfabrication contexts towards biomedical application purposes.

Comparing the performance of single and multifrequency Kelvin probe force microscopy techniques in air and water

In this paper, we derive and present quantitative expressions governing the performance of single and multifrequency Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) techniques in both air and water. Metrics such as minimum detectable contact potential difference, minimum required AC bias, and signal-to-noise ratio are compared and contrasted both off resonance and utilizing the first two eigenmodes of the cantilever. These comparisons allow the reader to quickly and quantitatively identify the parameters for the best performance for a given KPFM-based experiment in a given environment. Furthermore, we apply these performance metrics in the identification of KPFM-based modes that are most suitable for operation in liquid environments where bias application can lead to unwanted electrochemical reactions. We conclude that open-loop multifrequency KPFM modes operated with the first harmonic of the electrostatic response on the first eigenmode offer the best performance in liquid environments whilst needing the smallest AC bias for operation.

Controlling Amyloid Fibril Properties Via Ionic Liquids: The Representative Case of Ethylammonium Nitrate and Tetramethylguanidinium Acetate on the Amyloidogenesis of Lysozyme

Protein aggregation into amyloid fibrils has been observed in several pathological conditions and exploited in nanotechnology. It is also key in several biochemical processes. In this work, we show that ionic liquids (ILs), a vast class of organic electrolytes, can finely tune amyloid properties, opening a new landscape in basic science and applications. The representative case of ethylammonium nitrate (EAN) and tetramethyl-guanidinium acetate (TMGA) ILs on lysozyme is considered. First, atomic force microscopy has shown that the addition of EAN and TMGA leads to thicker and thinner amyloid fibrils of greater and lower electric potential, respectively, with diameters finely tunable by IL concentration. Optical tweezers and neutron scattering have shed light on their mechanism of action. TMGA interacts with the protein hydration layer only, making the relaxation dynamics of these water molecules faster. EAN interacts directly with the protein instead, making it mechanically unstable and slowing down its relaxation dynamics.

Microfabrication of peptide self-assemblies: inspired by nature towards applications

Peptide self-assemblies show intriguing and tunable physicochemical properties, and thus have been attracting increasing interest over the last two decades. However, the micro/nano-scale dimensions of the self-assemblies severely restrict their extensive applications. Inspired by nature, to genuinely realize the practical utilization of the bio-organic super-architectures, it is beneficial to further organize the peptide self-assemblies to integrate the properties of the individual supermolecules and fabricate higher-level organizations for smart functional devices. Therefore, cumulative studies have been reported on peptide microfabrication giving rise to diverse properties. This review summarizes the recent development of the microfabrication of peptide self-assemblies, discussing each methodology along with the diverse properties and practical applications of the engineered peptide large-scale, highly-ordered organizations. Finally, the current limitations of the state-of-the-art microfabrication strategies are critically assessed and alternative solutions are suggested.

Structural Transition-Induced Raman Enhancement in Bioinspired Diphenylalanine Peptide Nanotubes

Semiconducting materials are increasingly proposed as alternatives to noble metal nanomaterials to enhance Raman scattering. We demonstrate that bioinspired semiconducting diphenylalanine peptide nanotubes annealed through a reported structural transition can support Raman detection of 10^-7 M concentrations for a range of molecules including mononucleotides. The enhancement is attributed to the introduction of electronic states below the conduction band that facilitate charge transfer to the analyte molecule. These results show that organic semiconductor-based materials can serve as platforms for enhanced Raman scattering for chemical sensing. As the sensor is metal-free, the enhancement is achieved without the introduction of electromagnetic surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy.

Graphene oxide modulates inter-particle interactions in 3D printable soft nanocomposite hydrogels restoring magnetic hyperthermia responses

Hydrogels loaded with magnetic iron oxide nanoparticles that can be patterned and which controllably induce hyperthermic responses on AC-field stimulation are of interest as functional components of next-generation biomaterials. Formation of nanocomposite hydrogels is known to eliminate any Brownian contribution to hyperthermic response (reducing stimulated heating) while the Néel contribution can also be suppressed by inter-particle dipolar interactions arising from aggregation induced before or during gelation. We describe the ability of graphene oxide (GO) flakes to restore the hyperthermic efficiency of soft printable hydrogels formed using Pluronics F127 and PEGylated magnetic nanoflowers. Here, by varying the amount of GO in mixed nanocomposite suspensions and gels, we demonstrate GO-content dependent recovery of hyperthemic response in gels. This is due to progressively reduced inter-nanoflower interactions mediated by GO, which largely restore the dispersed-state Néel contribution to heating. We suggest that preferential association of GO with the hydrophobic F127 blocks increases the preponderance of cohesive interactions between the hydrophilic blocks and the PEGylated nanoflowers, promoting dispersion of the latter. Finally we demonstrate extrusion-based 3D printing with excellent print fidelity of the magnetically-responsive nanocomposites, for which the inclusion of GO provides significant improvement in the spatially-localized open-coil heating response, rendering the prints viable components for future cell stimulation and delivery applications.

Maximizing Information: A Machine Learning Approach for Analysis of Complex Nanoscale Electromechanical Behavior in Defect-Rich PZT Films

Scanning Probe Microscopy (SPM) based techniques probe material properties over microscale regions with nanoscale resolution, ultimately resulting in investigation of mesoscale functionalities. Among SPM techniques, piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) is a highly effective tool in exploring polarization switching in ferroelectric materials. However, its signal is also sensitive to sample-dependent electrostatic and chemo-electromechanical changes. Literature reports have often concentrated on the evaluation of the Off-field piezoresponse, compared to On-field piezoresponse, based on the latter's increased sensitivity to non-ferroelectric contributions. Using machine learning approaches incorporating both Off- and On-field piezoresponse response as well as Off-field resonance frequency to maximize information, switching piezoresponse in a defect-rich Pb(Zr,Ti)O₃ thin film is investigated. As expected, one major contributor to the piezoresponse is mostly ferroelectric, coupled with electrostatic phenomena during On-field measurements. A second component is electrostatic in nature, while a third component is likely due to a superposition of multiple non-ferroelectric processes. The proposed approach will enable deeper understanding of switching phenomena in weakly ferroelectric samples and materials with large chemo-electromechanical response.

Electric Field Tunability of Photoluminescence from a Hybrid Peptide-Plasmonic Metal Microfabricated Chip

Enhancement of fluorescence through the application of plasmonic metal nanostructures has gained substantial research attention due to the widespread use of fluorescence-based measurements and devices. Using a microfabricated plasmonic silver nanoparticle-organic semiconductor platform, we show experimentally the enhancement of fluorescence intensity achieved through electro-optical synergy. Fluorophores located sufficiently near silver nanoparticles are combined with diphenylalanine nanotubes (FFNTs) and subjected to a DC electric field. It is proposed that the enhancement of the fluorescence signal arises from the application of the electric field along the length of the FFNTs, which stimulates the pairing of low-energy electrons in the FFNTs with the silver nanoparticles, enabling charge transport across the metal-semiconductor template that enhances the electromagnetic field of the plasmonic nanoparticles. Many-body perturbation theory calculations indicate that, furthermore, the charging of silver may enhance its plasmonic performance intrinsically at particular wavelengths, through band-structure effects. These studies demonstrate for the first time that field-activated plasmonic hybrid platforms can improve fluorescence-based detection beyond using plasmonic nanoparticles alone. In order to widen the use of this hybrid platform, we have applied it to enhance fluorescence from bovine serum albumin and Pseudomonas fluorescens. Significant enhancement in fluorescence intensity was observed from both. The results obtained can provide a reference to be used in the development of biochemical sensors based on surface-enhanced fluorescence.

Boosting Polarization Switching-Induced Current Injection by Mechanical Force in Ferroelectric Thin Films

When scaling the lateral size of a ferroelectric random access memory (FeRAM) device down to the nanometer range, the polarization switching-induced displacement current becomes small and challenging to detect, which greatly limits the storage density of FeRAM. Here, we report the observation of significantly enhanced injection currents, much larger than typical switching currents, induced by polarization switching in BiFeO₃ thin films via conductive atomic force microscopy. Interestingly, this injected current can be effectively modulated by applying mechanical force. As the loading force increases from ∼50 to ∼750 nN, the magnitude of the injected current increases and the critical voltage to trigger the current injection decreases. Notably, changing the loading force by an order of magnitude increases the peak current by 2-3 orders of magnitude. The mechanically boosted injected current could be useful for the development of high-density FeRAM devices. The mechanical modulation of the injected current may be attributed to the mechanical force-induced changes in the barrier height and interfacial layer width.

Replica Exchange Molecular Dynamics of Diphenylalanine Amyloid Peptides in Electric Fields

The self-assembling propensity of amyloid peptides such as diphenylalanine (FF) allows them to form ordered, nanoscale structures, with biocompatible properties important for biomedical applications. Moreover, piezoelectric properties allow FF molecules and their aggregates (e.g., FF nanotubes) to be aligned in a controlled way by the application of external electric fields. However, while the behavior of FF nanostructures emerges from the biophysical properties of the monomers, the detailed responses of individual peptides to both temperature and electric fields are not fully understood. Here, we study the temperature-dependent conformational dynamics of FF peptides solvated in explicit water molecules, an environment relevant to biomedical applications, by using an enhanced sampling method, replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD), in conjunction with applied electric fields. Our simulations highlight and overcome possible artifacts that may occur during the setup of REMD simulations of explicitly solvated peptides in the presence of external electric fields, a problem particularly important in the case of short peptides such as FF. The presence of the external fields could overstabilize certain conformational states in one or more REMD replicas, leading to distortions of the underlying potential energy distributions observed at each temperature. This can be overcome by correcting the REMD initial conditions to include the lower-energy conformations induced by the external field. We show that the converged REMD data can be analyzed using a Markovian description of conformational states and show that a rather complex, 3-state, temperature-dependent conformational dynamics in the absence of electric fields collapses to only one of these states in the presence of the electric fields. These details on the temperature- and electric-field-dependent thermodynamic and kinetic properties of small FF amyloid peptides can be useful in understanding and devising new methods to control their aggregation-prone biophysical properties and, possibly, the structural and biophysical properties of FF molecular nanostructures.

Spatiotemporally Resolved Heat Dissipation in 3D Patterned Magnetically Responsive Hydrogels

Multifunctional nanocomposites that exhibit well-defined physical properties and encode spatiotemporally controlled responses are emerging as components for advanced responsive systems, for example, in soft robotics or drug delivery. Here an example of such a system, based on simple magnetic hydrogels composed of iron oxide magnetic nanoflowers and Pluronic F127 that generates heat upon alternating magnetic field irradiation is described. Rules for heat-induction in bulk hydrogels and the heat-dependence on particle concentration, gel volume, and gel exposed surface area are established, and the dependence on external environmental conditions in "closed" as compared to "open" (cell culture) system, with controllable heat jumps, of ∆T 0-12°C, achieved within ≤10 min and maintained described. Furthermore the use of extrusion-based 3D printing for manipulating the spatial distribution of heat in well-defined printed features with spatial resolution <150 µm, sufficiently fine to be of relevance to tissue engineering, is presented. Finally, localized heat induction in printed magnetic hydrogels is demonstrated through spatiotemporally-controlled release of molecules (in this case the dye methylene blue). The study establishes hitherto unobserved control over combined spatial and temporal induction of heat, the applications of which in developing responsive scaffold remodeling and cargo release for applications in regenerative medicine are discussed.

Flexing Piezoelectric Diphenylalanine-Plasmonic Metal Nanocomposites to Increase SERS Signal Strength

Piezoelectric quasi-1D peptide nanotubes and plasmonic metal nanoparticles are combined to create a flexible and self-energized surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) substrate that strengthens SERS signal intensities by over an order of magnitude compared to an unflexed substrate. The platform is used to sense bovine serum albumin, lysozyme, glucose, and adenine. Finite-element electromagnetic modeling indicates that the signal enhancement results from piezoelectric-induced charge, which is mechanically activated via substrate bending. The results presented here open the possibility of using peptide nanotubes on conformal substrates for in situ SERS detection.

Sub-Toxic Concentrations of Ionic Liquids Enhance Cell Migration by Reducing the Elasticity of the Cellular Lipid Membrane

Cell migration is a universal and crucial mechanism for life. It is required in a series of physiological processes, in wound repair and immune response and is involved in several pathological conditions, including cancer and virus dissemination. Among the several biochemical and biophysical routes, changing cell membrane elasticity holds the promise to be a universal strategy to alter cell mobility. Due to their affinity with cell membranes, ionic liquids (ILs) may play an important role. This work focuses on the effect of subtoxic amounts of imidazolium-ILs on the migration of the model cancer cell line MDA-MB-231. Here we show that ILs are able to enhance cell mobility by reducing the elasticity of the cellular lipid membrane, and that both mobility and elasticity can be tuned by IL-concentration and IL-cation chain length. This biochemical-physical mechanism is potentially valid for all mammalian cells, and its impact in bionanomedicine and bionanotechnology is discussed.

Modulation of Jahn-Teller distortion and electromechanical response in a Mn3+spin crossover complex

Structural, magnetic and electromechanical changes resulting from spin crossover between the spin quintet and spin triplet forms of a mononuclear Mn3+complex embedded in six lattices with different charge balancing counterions are reported. Isostructural ClO4-and BF4-salts (1) and (2) each have two unique Mn3+sites which follow different thermal evolution pathways resulting in a crossover from the spin quintet form at room temperature to a 1:1 spin triplet:quintet ratio below 150 K. The PF6-(3) and NO3-(4) salts which each have one unique Mn3+site show a complete conversion from spin quintet to spin triplet over the same temperature range. A complete two step spin crossover is observed in the CF3SO3-lattice (5) with a 1:1 ratio of spin quintet and spin triplet forms at intermediate temperature, while the BPh4-lattice (6) stabilizes the spin triplet form over most of the temperature range with gradual and incomplete spin state switching above 250 K. An electromechanical piezoresponse was detected in NO3-complex4despite crystallization in a centrosymmetric space group. The role of deformations associated with stress-induced spin triplet-spin quintet switching in breaking the local symmetry are discussed and computational analysis is used to estimate the energy gap between the two spin states.

Additive printing of pure nanocrystalline nickel thin films using room environment electroplating

Given its high temperature stability, oxidation-, corrosion- and wear-resistance, and ferromagnetic properties, Nickel (Ni) is one of the most technologically important metals. This article reports that pure and nanocrystalline (Ni) films with excellent mechanical and magnetic properties can be additively printed at room environment without any high-temperature post-processing. The printing process is based on a nozzle-based electrochemical deposition from the classical Watt's bath. The printed Ni film showed a preferred (220) and (111) texture based on x-ray diffraction spectra. The printed Ni film had close to bulk electrical conductivity; its indentation elastic modulus and hardness was measured to be 203 ± 6.7 GPa and 6.27 ± 0.34 GPa, respectively. Magnetoresistance, magnetic hysteresis loop, and magnetic domain imaging showed promising results of the printed Ni for functional applications.

Electric Field-Induced Chemical Surface-Enhanced Raman Spectroscopy Enhancement from Aligned Peptide Nanotube-Graphene Oxide Templates for Universal Trace Detection of Biomolecules

Semiconductor-graphene oxide-based surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrates represent a new frontier in the field of surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS). However, the application of graphene oxide has had limited success because of the poor Raman enhancement factors that are achievable in comparison to noble metals. In this work, we report chemical SERS enhancement enabled by the application of an electric field (10-25 V/mm) to aligned semiconducting peptide nanotube-graphene oxide composite structures during Raman measurements. The technique enables nanomolar detection sensitivity of glucose and nucleobases with up to 10-fold signal enhancement compared to metal-based substrates, which, to our knowledge, is higher than that previously reported for semiconductor-based SERS substrates. The increased Raman scattering is assigned to enhanced charge-transfer resonance enabled by work function lowering of the peptide nanotubes. These results provide insight into how semiconductor organic peptide nanotubes interact with graphene oxide, which may facilitate chemical biosensing, electronic devices, and energy-harvesting applications.

Template-Assisted Synthesis of Luminescent Carbon Nanofibers from Beverage-Related Precursors by Microwave Heating

Luminescent carbon nanomaterials are important materials for sensing, imaging, and display technologies. This work describes the use of microwave heating for the template-assisted preparation of luminescent carbon nanofibers (CNFs) from the reaction of a range of beverage-related precursors with the nitrogen-rich polyethyleneimine. Highly luminescent robust carbon fibers that were 10 to 30 m in length and had a diameter of 200 nm were obtained under moderate conditions of temperature (250-260 °C) and a short reaction time (6 min). The high aspect ratio fibers showed wavelength-dependent emission that can be readily imaged using epifluorescence. The development of these multi-emissive one-dimensional (1D) carbon nanomaterials offers potential for a range of applications.

Decoupling Mesoscale Functional Response in PLZT across the Ferroelectric-Relaxor Phase Transition with Contact Kelvin Probe Force Microscopy and Machine Learning

Relaxor ferroelectrics exhibit a range of interesting material behavior, including high electromechanical response, polarization rotations, as well as temperature and electric field-driven phase transitions. The origin of this unusual functional behavior remains elusive due to limited knowledge on polarization dynamics at the nanoscale. Piezoresponse force microscopy and associated switching spectroscopy provide access to local electromechanical properties on the micro- and nanoscale, which can help to address some of these gaps in our knowledge. However, these techniques are inherently prone to artefacts caused by signal contributions emanating from electrostatic interactions between tip and sample. Understanding functional behavior of complex, disordered systems like relaxor materials with unknown electromechanical properties therefore requires a technique that allows distinguishing between electromechanical and electrostatic response. Here, contact Kelvin probe force microscopy (cKPFM) is used to gain insight into the evolution of local electromechanical and capacitive properties of a representative relaxor material lead lanthanum zirconate across the phase transition from a ferroelectric to relaxor state. The obtained multidimensional data set was processed using an unsupervised machine learning algorithm to detect variations in functional response across the probed area and temperature range. Further analysis showed the formation of two separate cKPFM response bands below 50 °C, providing evidence for polarization switching. At higher temperatures only one band is observed, indicating an electrostatic origin of the measured response. In addition, the junction potential difference, which was extracted from the cKPFM data, becomes independent of the temperature in the relaxor state. The combination of this multidimensional voltage spectroscopy technique and machine learning allows to identify the origin of the measured functional response and to decouple ferroelectric from electrostatic phenomena necessary to understand the functional behavior of complex, disordered systems like relaxor materials.

Quantitative comparison of closed-loop and dual harmonic Kelvin probe force microscopy techniques

Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) is a widely used technique to map surface potentials at the nanometer scale. In traditional KPFM, a feedback loop regulates the DC bias applied between a sharp conductive probe and a sample to nullify the electrostatic force (closed-loop operation). In comparison, open-loop techniques such as dual harmonic KPFM (DH-KPFM) are simpler to implement, are less sensitive to artefacts, offer the unique ability to probe voltage sensitive materials, and operate in liquid environments. Here, we directly compare the two techniques in terms of their bandwidth and sensitivity to instrumentation artefacts. Furthermore, we introduce a new correction for traditional KPFM termed "setpoint correction," which allows us to obtain agreement between open and closed-loop techniques within 1%. Quantitative validation of DH-KPFM may lead to a wider adoption of open-loop KPFM techniques by the scanning probe community.

Photoinduced Enhanced Raman from Lithium Niobate on Insulator Template

Photoinduced enhanced Raman spectroscopy from a lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI)-silver nanoparticle template is demonstrated both by irradiating the template with 254 nm ultraviolet (UV) light before adding an analyte and before placing the substrate in the Raman system (substrate irradiation) and by irradiating the sample in the Raman system after adding the molecule (sample irradiation). The photoinduced enhancement enables up to an ∼sevenfold increase of the surface-enhanced Raman scattering signal strength of an analyte following substrate irradiation, whereas an ∼threefold enhancement above the surface-enhanced signal is obtained for sample irradiation. The photoinduced enhancement relaxes over the course of ∼10 h for a substrate irradiation duration of 150 min before returning to initial signal levels. The increase in Raman scattering intensity following UV irradiation is attributed to photoinduced charge transfer from the LNOI template to the analyte. New Raman bands are observed following UV irradiation, the appearance of which is suggestive of a photocatalytic reaction and highlight the potential of LNOI as a photoactive surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy substrate.

Conformational analysis of replica exchange MD: Temperature-dependent Markov networks for FF amyloid peptides

Recent molecular modeling methods using Markovian descriptions of conformational states of biomolecular systems have led to powerful analysis frameworks that can accurately describe their complex dynamical behavior. In conjunction with enhanced sampling methods, such as replica exchange molecular dynamics (REMD), these frameworks allow the systematic and accurate extraction of transition probabilities between the corresponding states, in the case of Markov state models, and of statistically-optimized transition rates, in the case of the corresponding coarse master equations. However, applying automatically such methods to large molecular dynamics (MD) simulations, with explicit water molecules, remains limited both by the initial ability to identify good candidates for the underlying Markovian states and by the necessity to do so using good collective variables as reaction coordinates that allow the correct counting of inter-state transitions at various lag times. Here, we show that, in cases when representative molecular conformations can be identified for the corresponding Markovian states, and thus their corresponding collective evolution of atomic positions can be calculated along MD trajectories, one can use them to build a new type of simple collective variable, which can be particularly useful in both the correct state assignment and in the subsequent accurate counting of inter-state transition probabilities. In the case of the ubiquitously used root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) of atomic positions, we introduce the relative RMSD (RelRMSD) measure as a good reaction coordinate candidate. We apply this method to the analysis of REMD trajectories of amyloid-forming diphenylalanine (FF) peptides-a system with important nanotechnology and biomedical applications due to its self-assembling and piezoelectric properties-illustrating the use of RelRMSD in extracting its temperature-dependent intrinsic kinetics, without a priori assumptions on the functional form (e.g., Arrhenius or not) of the underlying conformational transition rates. The RelRMSD analysis enables as well a more objective assessment of the convergence of the REMD simulations. This type of collective variable may be generalized to other observables that could accurately capture conformational differences between the underlying Markov states (e.g., distance RMSD, the fraction of native contacts, etc.).

Nitrogen reactive ion etch processes for the selective removal of poly-(4-vinylpyridine) in block copolymer films

Self-assembling block copolymer (BCP) patterns are one of the main contenders for the fabrication of nanopattern templates in next generation lithography technology. Transforming these templates to hard mark materials is key for pattern transfer and in some cases, involves selectively removing one block from the nanopattern. For poly(styrene)-block-poly(4-vinylpyridine) (PS-b-P4VP), a high χ BCP system which could be potentially incorporated into semiconductor nanofabrication, this selective removal is predominantly done by a wet etch/activation process. Conversely, this process has numerous disadvantages including lack of control and high generation of waste leading to high cost. For these reasons, our motivation was to move away from the wet etch process and optimise a dry etch which would overcome the limitations associated with the activation process. The work presented herein shows the development of a selective plasma etch process for the removal of P4VP cores from PS-b-P4VP nanopatterned film. Results have shown that a nitrogen reactive ion etch plasma has a selectivity for P4VP of 2.2:1 and suggest that the position of the nitrogen in the aromatic ring of P4VP plays a key role in this selectivity. In situ plasma etching and x-ray photoelectron spectrometry measurements were made without breaking vacuum, confirming that the nitrogen plasma has selectivity for removal of P4VP over PS.

Surface Chemistry Controls Anomalous Ferroelectric Behavior in Lithium Niobate

Polarization switching in ferroelectric materials underpins a multitude of applications ranging from nonvolatile memories to data storage to ferroelectric lithography. While traditionally considered to be a functionality of the material only, basic theoretical considerations suggest that switching is expected to be intrinsically linked to changes in the electrochemical state of the surface. Hence, the properties and dynamics of the screening charges can affect or control the switching dynamics. Despite being recognized for over 50 years, analysis of these phenomena remained largely speculative. Here, we explore polarization switching on the prototypical LiNbO₃ surface using the combination of contact mode Kelvin probe force microscopy and chemical imaging by time-of-flight mass-spectrometry and demonstrate pronounced chemical differences between the domains. These studies provide a consistent explanation to the anomalous polarization and surface charge behavior observed in LiNbO₃ and point to new opportunities in chemical control of polarization dynamics in thin films and crystals via control of surface chemistry, complementing traditional routes via bulk doping, and substrate-induced strain and tilt systems.

Locally Controlled Cu-Ion Transport in Layered Ferroelectric CuInP2S6

Metal thiophosphates are attracting growing attention in the context of quasi-two-dimensional van der Waals functional materials. Alkali thiophosphates are investigated as ion conductors for solid electrolytes, and transition-metal thiophosphates are explored as a new class of ferroelectric materials. For the latter, a representative copper indium thiophosphate is ferrielectric at room temperature and, despite low polarization, exhibits giant negative electrostrictive coefficients. Here, we reveal that ionic conductivity in this material enables localized extraction of Cu ions from the lattice with a biased scanning probe microscopy tip, which is surprisingly reversible. The ionic conduction is tracked through local volume changes with a scanning probe microscopy tip providing a current-free probing technique, which can be explored for other thiophosphates of interest. Nearly 90 nm-tall crystallites can be formed and erased reversibly on the surface of this material as a result of ionic motion, the size of which can be sensitively controlled by both magnitude and frequency of the electric field, as well as the ambient temperature. These experimental results and density functional theory calculations point to a remarkable resilience of CuInP₂S₆ to large-scale ionic displacement and Cu vacancies, in part enabled by the metastability of Cu-deficient phases. Furthermore, we have found that the piezoelectric response of CuInP₂S₆ is enhanced by about 45% when a slight ionic modification is carried out with applied field. This new mode of modifying the lattice of CuInP₂S₆, and more generally ionically conducting thiophosphates, posits new prospects for their applications in van der Waals heterostructures, possibly in the context of catalytic or electronic functionalities.

Towards nanoscale electrical measurements in liquid by advanced KPFM techniques: a review

Fundamental mechanisms of energy storage, corrosion, sensing, and multiple biological functionalities are directly coupled to electrical processes and ionic dynamics at solid-liquid interfaces. In many cases, these processes are spatially inhomogeneous taking place at grain boundaries, step edges, point defects, ion channels, etc and possess complex time and voltage dependent dynamics. This necessitates time-resolved and real-space probing of these phenomena. In this review, we discuss the applications of force-sensitive voltage modulated scanning probe microscopy (SPM) for probing electrical phenomena at solid-liquid interfaces. We first describe the working principles behind electrostatic and Kelvin probe force microscopies (EFM & KPFM) at the gas-solid interface, review the state of the art in advanced KPFM methods and developments to (i) overcome limitations of classical KPFM, (ii) expand the information accessible from KPFM, and (iii) extend KPFM operation to liquid environments. We briefly discuss the theoretical framework of electrical double layer (EDL) forces and dynamics, the implications and breakdown of classical EDL models for highly charged interfaces or under high ion concentrations, and describe recent modifications of the classical EDL theory relevant for understanding nanoscale electrical measurements at the solid-liquid interface. We further review the latest achievements in mapping surface charge, dielectric constants, and electrodynamic and electrochemical processes in liquids. Finally, we outline the key challenges and opportunities that exist in the field of nanoscale electrical measurements in liquid as well as providing a roadmap for the future development of liquid KPFM.

Templated microwave synthesis of luminescent carbon nanofibers

Carbon based nanomaterials offer the potential to provide solutions to key technological challenges. This work describes the preparation of luminescent carbon nanofibers by template-assisted microwave pyrolysis of environmentally friendly precursors, citric acid and polyethyleneimine, in aqueous solution. SEM reveals a dense forest of vertically aligned cylindrical carbon nanofibers with an average diameter of ca. 200 nm, which are shown by TEM to be amorphous. Compositional analysis indicated the incorporation of amino and pyrrolic nitrogen, and carbon-oxygen moieties. These species contribute to UV light absorption with an absorption shoulder and tail towards visible wavelengths. UV excitation gave visible (blue) emission at ca. 450 nm with a quantum yield of ca. 5%; emission decay under pulsed excitation was predominantly mono-exponential with a lifetime of ca. 1 ns. The emission maximum is largely excitation wavelength independent suggesting the involvement of citrazinic acid-type functionalities in the fiber photophysics. Reversible pH-dependent excitation and emission behaviour was observed, with maximum emission at ca. pH 7. Nanofiber emission was also quenched in aqueous solutions of metal cations, in a concentration-dependent manner. Single nanofiber emission intensity was quite stable under continuous excitation permitting single fiber quenching-based metal ion detection whereby a significant (>90%) and prompt (sub-10 s) quenching was observed upon exposure to sub-millimolar Fe(iii) solutions. The introduction of these new 1D luminescent carbon nanofibers offers the potential for exciting developments across a range of applications.

Single-Molecule Nonresonant Wide-Field Surface-Enhanced Raman Scattering from Ferroelectrically Defined Au Nanoparticle Microarrays

Single-molecule detection by surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) is a powerful spectroscopic technique that is of interest for the sensor development field. An important aspect of optimizing the materials used in SERS-based sensors is the ability to have a high density of "hot spots" that enhance the SERS sensitivity to the single-molecule level. Photodeposition of gold (Au) nanoparticles through electric-field-directed self-assembly on a periodically proton-exchanged lithium niobate (PPELN) substrate provides conditions to form well-ordered microscale features consisting of closely packed Au nanoparticles. The resulting Au nanoparticle microstructure arrays (microarrays) are plasmon-active and support nonresonant single-molecule SERS at ultralow concentrations (<10-9-10-13 M) with excitation power densities <1 × 10-3 W cm-2 using wide-field imaging. The microarrays offer excellent SERS reproducibility, with an intensity variation of <7.5% across the substrate. As most biomarkers and molecules do not support resonance enhancement, this work demonstrates that PPELN is a suitable template for high-sensitivity, nonresonant sensing applications.

Photo-induced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy from a diphenylalanine peptide nanotube-metal nanoparticle template

UV irradiation of aligned diphenylalanine peptide nanotubes (FF-PNTs) decorated with plasmonic silver nanoparticles (Ag NPs) enables photo-induced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy. UV-induced charge transfer facilitates a chemical enhancement that provides up to a 10-fold increase in surface-enhanced Raman intensity and allows the detection of a wide range of small molecules and low Raman cross-section molecules at concentrations as low as 10-13 M. The aligned FF-PNT/Ag NP template further prevents photodegradation of the molecules under investigation. Our results demonstrate that FF-PNTs can be used as an alternative material to semiconductors such as titanium dioxide for photo-induced surface-enhanced Raman spectroscopy applications.
