Abstract
An Artificial Intelligence system was developed and implemented for water, wastewater, and reuse plants to improve management of sensors, short and long-term maintenance plans, asset and investment management plans. It is based on an integrated approach to capture data from different computer systems and files. It adds a layer of intelligence to the data. It serves as a repository of key current and future operations and maintenance conditions that a plant needs have knowledge of. With this information, it can simulate the configuration of processes and assets for those conditions to improve or optimize operations, maintenance and asset management, using the IViewOps (Intelligent View of Operations) model. Based on the optimization through model runs, it is able to create output files that can feed data to other systems and inform the staff regarding optimal solutions to the conditions experienced or anticipated in the future.

Abstract
Synchronization of oestrus in mares remains a challenge to practitioners using Assisted Reproductive Technologies. The research objective was to compare adverse reactions and reproductive parameters in mares treated with different sources of progestins for oestrus synchronization. Mixed breeds of mares with a mean age of 3 years (range 2–20) were used. Groups were: 1) altrenogest 0.044 mg kg–1 BW PO daily for 10 days (D) (Regumate, Merck, White House Station, NJ, USA) (n = 30), 2) Long-acting progesterone (LAP4) (BET Pharmacy, Lexington, KY, USA) (n = 30) 10 cc IM once in the neck, and 3) Controlled intravaginal drug release (CIDR-B 1.9 g P4; Zoetis, Kirkland, QC, Canada) (n = 15) vaginal insert for 10 days. Mares were randomly assigned to treatment and evaluated using transrectal reproductive ultrasonography on Days 1 (treatment initiation), 5, 10, and daily during oestrus until ovulation (Ov). On Day 10, mares were given 250 µg of cloprostenol (PG) (Estrumate, Merck) IM, and when a follicle (F) >35 mm was detected 2500 IU hCG (Chorulon, Intervet, Millsboro, MD, USA) was administered IM. Adverse reactions were scored as follows: Regumate – any reaction at any time; LAP4 – the injection site was inspected and scored as: 0, no reaction; 1, mild slight raised area; 2, moderate reaction 5 cm; 3, severe reaction 6–10 cm; 4, very severe reaction >10 cm on Day 5 post-injection; CIDR categorical scores were: 0, no discharge; 1, mild vaginal discharge on CIDR at withdrawal; 2, moderate discharge on tail or vulva; 3, severe urine scald or visible discharge; 4, very severe thickened inflamed skin from urine scald or discharge. Chi-squared test at P < 0.05 was used to evaluate the overall frequency of reactions in mares, and the presence of intrauterine fluid. The time from cloprostenol (PG) to F 35, hCG to Ov, PG to Ov, and mm of intrauterine fluid on Days 1–3, was evaluated using the Shapiro–Wilk test and Kruskall–Wallis at P < 0.05. Results of the overall adverse reactions were: Group 1 0/30 (0%), Group 2 9/30 (30%), and Group 3 14/15 (93.3%). The Group 2 treatment resulted in category 0–4 reactions as follows (21/30, 1/30, 5/30, 2/30, 1/30) and for Group 3 category 0–4 (1/15, 13/15, 0/15, 1/15, 0/15), respectively. The overall frequency of adverse reactions was significantly different between groups (P = 0.0000) with Group 2 having the highest rate. Reproductive parameter results were median (quartiles) days from PG to F35 for groups 1–3 respectively: 4 (2.8–6), 5 (0–6), 3 (4–6), hours from hCG to OV: 42(42–42), 42 (42–72), 42 (43–54); and days from PG to OV: 8 (4.5–8), 8 (5–8), 6.6 (4.8–8). Fluid Day 1, Day 2, Day 3 had a median of 0 mm on all days, and on Day 3 mm of fluid was mild 0 (0–0.125) but different between groups (P = 0.0379). The detection of intrauterine fluid on Day 2 (P = 0.005) was different between groups. No follicle wave synchronization was achieved by progestin administration; hence, the main differences noted between groups were the frequency of adverse reactions, rather than the reproductive parameters studied. The cost of the treatment and the frequency of adverse reactions are important considerations when choosing an oestrus synchronization therapy for mares.

Abstract
Oxytocinase/insulin regulated aminopeptidase (IRAP) or leucyl-cystinyl aminopeptidase (LNPEP) is an enzyme that is involved in the regulation of hormones such as oxytocin, vasopressin, and angiotensin in both humans and sheep. Historically, very low levels of this aminopeptidase were reported in monthly samples obtained from cycling and pregnant mares using an enzymatic colourimetric method. The regulation of oxytocin in horses is of interest because of its central role in uterine clearance, luteal maintenance, parturition, passage of fetal membranes, maternal foal bonding, and milk let-down. A preliminary study was performed with the objective of re-examining the level of serum oxytocinase in nonpregnant control (n = 3 mares sampled every other day; EOD of the oestrous cycle), and n = 5 mares sampled Day 12 to 15; oxytocin-treated (n = 2 mares sampled Day 12 to 15), and early pregnant mares (n = 6 mares sampled EOD), using more sensitive ELISA methodology. Mares were examined daily in oestrus until ovulation (Day 0) and from Days 10 to 21, using transrectal ultrasonography of the reproductive tract. Palpable changes in uterine and cervical tone, ultrasound measurement of dominant follicles, oedema scores (0 to 4 with 4 being maximal oedema), and changes in luteal echotexture and size were recorded. Pregnant mares were bred using AI (>200 million motile and normal sperm) from a proven stallion while in oestrus until ovulation, beginning when the dominant follicle was >35 mm. Oxytocin-treated mares were administered 60 IU IM oxytocin SID from Day 7 to 14. Blood was collected to obtain serum. Changes in serum oxytocinase levels were measured using a commercially available ELISA kit for Horse LNPEP according to the manufacturer's instructions (MyBioSource, San Diego, CA, USA) and validated for use in our laboratory using serial dilutions of pooled serum with an intra-assay and inter-assay CV <15%. The lowest standard of the assay was 31.2 ng mL–1. Preliminary results of this pilot study demonstrated in control cycles median serum oxytocinase levels below the lowest standard (2.0 to 30.1 ng mL–1). Oxytocin-treated mares had median serum oxytocinase levels from 39 to 61 ng mL–1 on Days 12 to 15. Early pregnant mares had detectable levels from Day 8 to 21 (medians ranging from 40 to 89 ng mL–1). We concluded that serum oxytocinase levels were below the lowest standard in diestrus, and were low but detectable in oxytocin-treated mares. The highest oxytocinase levels were measured during early pregnancy. Further studies of serum oxytocinase in a larger population of mares, along with studies of tissue mRNA levels of oxytocinase, are required to better understand the regulation of oxytocin in horses.

Efficiency of superovulation and in vivo embryo production in eFSH-treated donor mares after estrus synchronization with progesterone and estradiol-17beta. Theriogenology 2009; 72:169-78. Abstract
Reliable methods of regulating estrus and stimulating superovulations in equine embryo transfer programs are desirable. Our objectives were to investigate the efficacy of a progesterone and estradiol-17beta (P&E) estrus synchronization regimen in mares with and without subsequent equine follicle-stimulating hormone (eFSH) treatment and to examine the effects of eFSH on folliculogenesis and embryo production. Cycling mares were treated with P&E daily for 10 d. On the final P&E treatment day, prostaglandin F(2alpha) was administered, and mares were randomly assigned to one of two treatment groups (n=20 mares/group). In both groups, mares were examined daily by transrectal ultrasonography. In the eFSH group, twice-daily eFSH treatments were initiated at follicle diameter 20 to 25 mm and ceased at follicle > or =35 mm; human chorionic gonadotrophin (hCG) was administered after 36 h. In the control group, eFSH treatments were not given, but hCG was administered at follicle > or =35 mm. Mares were inseminated with fresh semen, and embryo recovery attempts were performed 8 d postovulation. Synchrony of ovulations within each group appeared to be similar. Six mares in the eFSH group failed to ovulate. The eFSH treatment resulted in higher (P<0.05) numbers of preovulatory follicles and ovulations; however, embryo recovery rate did not increase (eFSH 1.0+/-0.4 vs. control 0.95+/-0.1 embryos/recovery attempt), and embryo per ovulation rate was significantly lower (36% vs. 73%). The eFSH-treated mares had significantly higher frequency of nonovulatory follicles (28% vs. 0) and higher periovulatory serum concentrations of estradiol-17beta. Based on our findings, combined P&E and eFSH regimens cannot be recommended for cycling donor mares.

Abstract
Historical, clinical and experimental data were collected from 9 horses homozygous for HYPP (H/H). All showed episodes of respiratory stertor, described as a rattling or honking sound, usually within the first week post partum. Five horses had one or more episodes of dysphagia, in 3 horses this was accompanied by drooling and in 3 by weight loss. In comparison, only one of 35 contemporaneous half siblings (of which approximately half would be expected to be of the H/N genotype and half N/N) was observed to have respiratory stertor prior to weaning and none had problems with dysphagia. One mature homozygous stallion was infertile secondary to urospermia. Six homozygous horses died or were subjected to euthanasia; 4 age less than a year, one age 20 months and one age 5 years. The remaining 3 cases were still alive at the end of the study. A comparison of homozygous and heterozygous horses using standardised potassium chloride challenge testing indicated that during attacks homozygotes showed significantly more frequent signs of drooling, prolapse of the third eyelid, respiratory stridor and weakness than heterozygous horses. Homozygotes also had significantly more total abnormalities (including myotonic discharges, high frequency repetitive discharges, and spontaneous activity) on electromyographic examination than heterozygotes. These data imply that HYPP is inherited as a codominant genetic defect, because the homozygotes showed more severe clinical signs of disease than heterozygotes. Homozygous foals would be expected to be produced in 25% of matings in which both parents are heterozygous. Owners and veterinarians should be aware of the risks of this mating.

Abstract
During the past 2 decades, commercial preparations of FSH have been extensively used to superovulate cattle. The problems that have been encountered in superovulation of cattle include high variability in the ovulation rate and subsequent yield of viable embryos. The lack of predictability in superovulatory trials has been attributed to difficulties in standardizing the potency of commercial FSH preparations. Traditionally, FSH potency has been tested in bioassays that utilize specific responses in whole animals or primary cell cultures. Whole animal bioassays lack sensitivity, while primary cell culture bioassays, which use fresh cells, have inherent variability within each preparation. An FSH bioassay that employed a stable chimeric cell line expressing the human FSH-R was used to provide an accurate measurement of FSH bioactivity. The hormonal potency of 2 commercial preparations of FSH used to superovulate cattle was determined using FSH immuno- and bioassays. Commercial FSH preparations differed in potency. One commercial product, prepared in 4 different years, showed no difference in the immunoactive levels of FSH. In the same product stored under identical conditions, FSH bioactivity varied from year to year. There was variability in FSH bioactivity both between and within commercial products. The lack of correlation between bioactivity and immunoactivity of commercial FSH preparations may explain, in part, the variability observed in superovulation of cattle.

Abstract
OBJECTIVE To compare the lifetime personality dysfunction of geriatric patients having late and early onset of major depression. DESIGN Group comparisons. SETTING Inpatient geriatric psychiatry unit and hospital-based geriatric psychiatry outpatient clinic. PATIENTS Volunteer sample of recovered elderly depressives with history of early onset of major depression (age < 60) (n = 16) and history of late onset of major depression (age > 60) (n = 14). MAJOR OUTCOME MEASURE: Personality Disorder Examination, containing diagnostic and dimensional scores for DSM-III-R personality disorders. RESULTS The two groups had similar demographic profiles and levels of depression after treatment. Early onset subjects had significantly higher mean dimensional scores in the avoidant, dependent, and not otherwise specified NOS personality disorders, and higher dimensional scores with a trend toward significance in 6 additional personality disorders. CONCLUSIONS Early onset geriatric depressives may have more lifetime personality dysfunction than late onset subjects. Greater personality dysfunction in early onset subjects may reflect postdepressive changes, predisposition, or a low grade depressive subtype.

Abstract
This article examines reasons for university involvement in protesting ROTC policies discriminatory toward lesbians and gay men. The formal exclusion of lesbians and gay men from the military permits not only the abuses in selective enforcement of the policy and considerable economic costs to maintain it, but also contributes to the perpetuation of the closet. Closeting is not a phenomenon chosen by lesbians and gay men for reasons of their own, and it rewards deceit, penalizes honesty, blames lesbians and gays for the mistrust of others, and effects a psychological division ("doubling") of individual identity and corrupts individual responsibility. For these reasons, university educators, as committed to the advance of truth, have an obligation to protest ROTC compliance with discriminatory policies.

Abstract
A 110 kDa Plasmodium knowlesi antigen, termed PK110, has been identified on the basis of messenger RNA abundance in late schizonts. Most Plasmodium genes previously cloned have been identified by immune sera, which have selected immunodominant antigens composed of repeating epitopes. Although PK110 was not selected by immune sera, it also contains amino acid repeats, indicating that this structure may be a common feature of malarial proteins. Determination of 296 codons in the PK110 gene revealed the presence of thirteen tandem repeats of twelve amino acids whose consensus sequence is E E T Q K T V E P E Q T. A termination codon interrupts the fourteenth repeat, indicating that these repeats are at the C-terminus of the protein. Indirect immunofluorescence experiments with sera raised against the lambda gt11 fusion protein indicate that PK110 is present in intra-erythrocytic late schizonts. Cloned PK110 is recognized by Gambian sera, and shares epitopes with Plasmodium ovale. PK110 does not cross react immunologically or by DNA hybridization with Plasmodium falciparum.

Abstract
DdeI, a Type II restriction-modification system from the gram-negative anaerobic bacterium Desulfovibrio desulfuricans, recognizes the sequence CTNAG. The system has been cloned into E. coli in two steps. First the methylase gene was cloned into pBR322 and a derivative expressing higher levels was constructed. Then the endonuclease gene was located by Southern blot analyses; BamHI fragments large enough to contain the gene were cloned into pACYC184, introduced into a host containing the methylase gene, and screened for endonuclease activity. Both genes are stably maintained in E. coli on separate but compatible plasmids. The DdeI methylase is shown to be a cytosine methylase. DdeI methylase clones decrease in viability as methylation activity increases in E. coli RR1 (our original cloning strain). Therefore the DdeI system has been cloned and maintained in ER1467, a new E. coli cloning strain engineered to accept cytosine methylases. Finally, it has been demonstrated that a very high level of methylation was necessary in the DdeI system for successful introduction of the active endonuclease gene into E. coli.

Abstract
Three third trimester fetuses were exposed to a subgroup 2, type 7 adenovirus (adeno 7) by intraamnionic infection. The virus caused preterm delivery of two clinically ill calves and one stillbirth. The two premature calves died 12 and 72 hours after birth. An elevated serum neutralizing antibody titer (1:256) to adenovirus 7 was found in one principal calf at birth. Adenovirus 7 was recovered from several tissues of the live calves and the spleen of the stillborn calf. Fetuses exposed by intraamniotnic injection with virus carrier only, were born healthy after normal gestational periods and no viruses were isolated from the tissues. Clinically ill calves were weak, severely depressed and unable to stand and nurse. Gross postmortem lesions were nonspecific and consisted of petechial and ecchymotic hemorrhages and edema of the gastrointestinal tract. Histopathological lesions included vasculitis, necrosis of the mucosa of the forestomach, mild gastroenteritis and acute, nonsuppurative focal necrosis of the liver, kidney and adrenal gland. Intranuclear inclusion bodies were seen in pericytes, macrophages, hepatocytes, epithelial cells of adrenal cortical sinusoids of the zona glomerulosa and zona fasciculata and renal tubular epithelium.
